  I am trying to installing Ubuntu 12.10 on my Mac Mini (End 2009). This sounds like a often asked question and I all ready read lots of stuff about it, but now I am confused. While some people say, there are heavy problems by installing Ubuntu on a Mac Mini, such as components (like Sound card, graphic card, …) don't work very well, others say, that it should work perfectly fine. I figured out that installing UBNTU on a Mac isn't as easy (can't just downld the .iso and use unetboot, …) as it is on a PC. So, is it possible to install Ubuntu 12.10 on a Mac Mini 2009 (end), so everything works well?

• Broadcom BCM4331 not working on new Mac Mini 5,1

  I can't seem to get my wireless card working on my Mac Mini 5,1. Lspci returns: 03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4331 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 02) But running "additional drivers" doesn't detect anything. The nm-applet menu reads "device not ready--firmware missing." What can I do to get this to work? Note, this is with 12.04.1, so many of the previous discussions (for 11.10, etc) probably don't apply here.

• How to fix the Dell Mini 10v (1010) touchpad with Ubuntu 12.04.1

  I've just installed 12.04.1 from scratch on my Mini 10v, and the touchpad is behaving a bit oddly. It's got buttons integrated into the touchpad, and it looks as though a touch on a button is also being registered as a touch on the touchpad, causing all sorts of problems with clicking and dragging. Is there a fix for this? I seem to remember on very old versions of ubuntu having to disable the lower part of the touchpad, but I don't think it's been an issue for some time.

• No wireless and display issues on Dell Inspiron 1210 (Mini 12)

  I recently upgraded a friend's Dell Mini 12 (Inspiron 1210) from Ubuntu 8.10 to 10.04 netbook edition. After installing, and performing the available updates, I'm unable to detect any wireless networks (it knows it has a wireless card, but won't list any active networks). There also seems to be an issue with the display drivers: when scrolling, resizing, or drawing any windows there is a noticeable lag as I watch the screen redraw. As if there are no compatible display drivers installed. All these problems go away the moment I boot up a version of 8.10. But I'd like to keep 10.04 if possible. Are these common problems? Everything I've read suggest this is laptop should be compatible. Any suggestions? Thanks.

• Ubuntu on Mac mini and refit

  I have successfully installed Ubuntu pangolin 64 bit on a mac mini 2011 5,3 ( server version ). I have used the Ubuntu iso which I then converted to .dmg and dd'ed into an usb stick. I didn't want to keep OS X installed so I deleted the current partition and reformatted the drive as ext4 for / + a small swap partition. Everything seems to work nicely, but I have now a question since I read lots of reviews/howto when you people installed rEfit on Mac OS X. Did you use rEfit to be able to have a dual boot or there are other advantages by doing that ( apart that you will be able to download updated firmware for your hardware in the future via Mac OS ) like BIOS emulation and the like ?

• Getting the most out of a Mac mini as a media center

  Hello! I own an old Mac mini from 2006 (maybe early 2007). It's got an Intel Core Solo 32-bits CPU and 512 MB RAM. 160 GB HDD. The GPU is an integrated chip… Currently, my Mini is sitting under my LCD TV (720p). It's plugged in via a DVI to HDMI cable. It's currently running Leopard. And unfortunately, Snow Leopard can't be installed on a device with less than 1 GB of RAM… So, my Mac mini isn't exactly powerful. Also, it's slow and Mac OS X is not a pleasant experience on my Mini right now. It feels slow and heavy. I want to use my Mac mini as a media center/player. I want to be able to play video files in 720p (H.264, Matroska/MOV files). So basically, playing high-def videos is all I want to do with my Mini. What OS should I install? Stick to OS X? Optimize for video playback? Or should I install another OS — like Win XP, Ubuntu or any other Linux dist? Then, will my Mini be able to play 720p videos smoothly, even though the CPU and GPU aren't that powerful and with the limit of 512 MB of RAM? Appreciate all help. Thanks in advance!

According to the HP data of a more expensive variant, a AVerMedia A317 Mini PCI card installed is installed.   If you want to send an email to a contact or several contacts, you might want to keep some of the recipient email addresses private using the Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy) Field. Here’s how to do it in Outlook 2010. It’s not enabled by default, but adding it as a field for all future emails is a simple process. Launch Outlook and under the Home tab click on the New E-mail button. When the new mail window opens click on the Options tab and in the Show Fields column select Bcc. The Bcc field will appear and you can then put the contacts in there who you want to receive the mail secretly or don’t want to show a certain email address. • [MINI HOW-TO] Change the Default Color Scheme in Office 2010

  Like in Office 2007 the default color scheme for 2010 is blue. If you are not a fan of it, here we show you how to change it to silver or black. In this example we are using Microsoft Word, but it works the same way in Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint as well. Once you change the color scheme in one Office application, it will change it for all of the other apps in the suite. Change Color Scheme To change the color scheme click on the File tab to access Backstage View and click on Options. In Word Options the General section should open by default…use the dropdown menu next to Color Scheme to change it to Silver, Blue, or Black then click OK. Here is what Black looks like…who knows why Microsoft decided to leave the blue around the edges. This is the default Blue color scheme… And finally we take a look at the Silver color scheme in Excel… That is all there is to it! It would be nice if they would incorporate other color schemes to Office 2010, as some of you may not be happy with only three choices.   Do you need just one or a few special keyboard shortcuts for your favorite program(s)? A quick modification to program shortcuts will get you up and running without installing additional software. Creating New Keyboard Shortcuts Go to the start menu shortcut for the program, right-click on it, and select properties. When the properties window opens click in the shortcut key text area. All that you need to do is choose an appropriate letter for the program (i.e. O for Opera, E for Editra, etc.) and type it in the blank. You will not need to type any other keys or combination in…the “Ctrl + Alt +” will be automatically entered for you as soon as you type the letter in. Click OK to finish creating the new keyboard shortcut. Those new keyboard shortcuts will speed up access to your favorite software. Another example from our system using “I” for Iron Browser. Certainly much quicker than using the start menu. Conclusion If you only need one or just a few special keyboard shortcuts then this method provides a quick and simple solution.   One of the cool features of Windows Home Server is the ability to backup and monitor the computers on your network. If you no longer need a machine on to be monitored or backed up, here we show you how to remove it. Remove Computer from WHS The process if straight-forward and basic –Open Windows Home Server Console and click on Computers & Backup. Right-click on the computer that you no longer need and click Remove. You’ll be prompted to verify that you want to remove the machine and delete all of its backup data. Check the box I am sure I want to remove this computer then click the Remove button. That’s all there is to it! The computer and all of its backup data is removed. Remember that if you remove a computer, all of its backup data will be deleted as well. If you no longer have the computer, you probably don’t need the backed up data anyway, but you’ll want to be sure you no longer need it before removing it. Join us as we show you how to remove the Search Helper extension from your browser. An Unexpected Addition to Your Extensions You may be wondering what the new mysterious extension that showed up is for. Its’ purpose is to help the Bing Toolbar better integrate with your browser. Unless you have the Bing Toolbar installed you really do not need this cluttering your browser up. So how do you get rid of it? Removing the Extension In order to remove the extension you will need to navigate to the following location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack\Search Helper Once there delete the “firefoxextension folder”…that is all there is to it. If you want to remove the search helper add-on for Internet Explorer then delete the “SEPsearchhelperie.dll file” while you are here. Note: You may need to have administrator rights in order to delete the folder. No more Search Helper Extension! • [MINI HOW-TO] Repair Missing External Hard Drive Database Error in WHS

  If you’re using external hard drives with your Windows Home Server, they might get unplugged and create an error. Here we look at running the Repair Wizard to quickly fix the issue. If an external drive that is included in your drive pool becomes unplugged or loses power, you might see the following error under Home Network Health when opening the WHS Console. To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly and click Repair. The wizard launches and you’ll need to agree that you may lose data during the repair of the backup database. In this example it was a simple problem where an external drive became unplugged from the server…so you can close out of the wizard. If you look under Server Storage you can see the drive is missing…To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly. WHS will add the drive back into the pool and when finished you’ll see it listed as healthy and good to go. Using external drives that are part of your storage pool may not be the best way to have your home built WHS setup, but if you do, expect occasional errors such as this. • Wifi disabled on dell Inspiron Mini 10 (1018)

  My netbook cannot access the wifi network, and I cannot enable it. This is the second time this has happenned. The first time, it came back after a lot of restarts and BIOS factory resets. Ubuntu sometimes simply won't connect to any wifi networks, and other times it will say that the wireless is blocked by a hardware switch. I have tried pressing F2 and doing a BIOS reset, with no luck. sudo rfkill list all gives : 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes 1: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: yes

I seem to be able to connect and get great download / upload speeds through my PC, Xbox 360, iPhone and parents' laptop. However, my Mac Mini is very slow. OS X's Mail.app is downloading mail at 0.4kbps and then dropping to 0. Skype file transfers are doing the same. Browsing the net is a terrible experience. It is taking 30 seconds or more to download basic pages. All of my devices connect wirelessly to a Netgear router / modem. I have tried giving the Mac Mini a manual IP, and renew DHCP lease, as well as flush DNS in Terminal. I have also rebooted the router / modem twice, and the Mac Mini twice. Do you know what could be causing this? Thanks

• Mini DisplayPort -> DVI -> VGA ?

  I have a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter which I use to connect my MacBook to a screen that has DVI input. I also have a screen with VGA only input which I want to be able to use, so instead of buying yet another expensive Apple adapter (the Mini DisplayPort to VGA), I just got a cheap DVI to VGA, so I can do Mini DisplayPort - DVI - VGA. It doesn't seem to work though. The screen just says "no connection". Does anyone know if this is actually supposed to work (and my DVI - VGA is just broken), or is this simply not supported and I need to get the expensive Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA? Thanks!

  I recently haven't used my Mac Mini for about 5 days (however it was left on). Do you know what could be causing this? Thanks Update This is very weird. It is also very slow accessing localhost (setup through MAMP) and also slow to access the Netgear router config pages.

• mini-dinstall chmod 0600 changes file: Operation not permitted

  I'm getting "Operation not permitted" in the mini-dinstall.log everytime a new debian package has been uploaded on the custom debian repository using dput. The deb file is installed successfuly but the changes file remains in the incoming folder. I can not use a post-install script when the changes file can not be processed. How can I fix this problem?   Please - please, don't start down voting after reading the question title. Hey ! Please first of read out the question. I brought a whole new mac mini as I am an iPhone developer - I prefer to use it. But most of my family members are not used to with mac osx. They don't know how to operate os x. Managing files Opening documents Browser & many many other issues. It's not their age to learn more, people like us ( computer geek ) can easily get into new systems. I had many attempted efforts to teach them for all these above topics in windows. Summary, Of all these, I know how to use mac, but they don't know. They stair like I am making private & bad usage of mac. In short, I just want to install windows. So, that they can feel that mac mini is for all members not for just me. Original Question Dual Boot windows & os x on mac mini ? Is it possible ? How ? Does it void warranties of apple ?
