  • why does setting stderr=subprocess.STDOUT fix a subprocess.check_output call?

    - by ShankarG
I have a python script running on a small server that is called in three different ways - from within another python script, by cron, or by gammu-smsd (an SMS daemon with the wonderful mobile utility [gammu]). The script is for maintenance and contained the following kludge to measure used space on the system (presumably this is possible from within Python, but this was quick and dirty): reportdict['Used Space'] = subprocess.check_output(["df / | tail -1 | awk '{ print $5; }'"], shell=True)[0:-1] Oddly enough this line would only fail when the script was called by a shell script running from gammu-smsd. The line would fail with a CalledProcessError exception saying "returned exit status 2", even though the output attribute of the CalledProcessError object contained the correct output. The only command in the sequence of shell commands that would give such an error status would be awk, with status 2 indicating a fatal error. If the python script with this line was called by cron, by another python script, or from the command line, this line would work fine. I broke my head trying to fix the environment for the script, thinking this must be the problem. Finally though I put in stderr=subprocess.STDOUT, like so: reportdict['Used Space'] = subprocess.check_output(["df / | tail -1 | awk '{ print $5; }'"], stderr=subprocess.STDOUT, shell=True)[0:-1] This was a debug measure to help me figure out if some output was coming on stderr. But after this the script started working, even when called from gammu-smsd! Why might this be the case? I ask for future reference when using subprocess...

  • Benefits of "Don't Fragment" on TCP Packets?

    - by taspeotis
One of our customers is having trouble submitting data from our application (on their PC) to a server (different geographical location). When sending packets under 1100 bytes everything works fine, but above this we see TCP retransmitting the packet every few seconds and getting no response. The packets we are using for testing are about 1400 bytes (but less than 1472). I can send an ICMP ping to www.google.com that is 1472 bytes and get a response (so it's not their router/first few hops). I found that our application sets the DF flag for these packets, and I believe a router along the way to the server has an MTU less than/equal to 1100 and dropping the packet. This affects 1 client in 5000, but since everybody's routes will be different this is expected. The data is a SOAP envelope and we expect a SOAP response back. I can't justify WHY we do it, the code to do this was written by a previous developer. So... Are there are benefits OR justification to setting the DF flag on TCP packets for application data? I can think of reasons it is needed for network diagnostics applications but not in our situation (we want the data to get to the endpoint, fragmented or not). One of our sysadmins said that it might have something to do with us using SSL, but as far as I know SSL is like a stream and regardless of fragmentation, as long as the stream is rebuilt at the end, there's no problem. If there's no good justification I will be changing the behaviour of our application. Thanks in advance.

  • How to remove the first and last character from a file using batch script?

    - by infant programmer
This is my input file content which I am using to copy to the output file. #sdfs|dfasf|sdfs| sdfs|df!@$%%*&!sdffs| sasdfasfa|dfsdf|#sdfs| What I need to do is to omit the first character '#' and last character '|' in the output file. So the output will be, sdfs|dfasf|sdfs| sdfs|df!@$%%*&!sdffs| sasdfasfa|dfsdf|#sdfs Batch script is new to me, but I tried my best and tried these codes, :: drop first and last char @echo off > xyz.txt & setLocal EnableDelayedExpansion for /f "tokens=* delims=" %%a in (E:\abc1.txt) do ( set str=%%a set str=!str:~1! echo !str!>> xyz.txt ) and @echo off > xyz.txt setLocal EnableDelayedExpansion for /f "tokens=1,2 delims= " %%a in (E:\abc1.txt) do ( set /a N+=1 if !N! gtr 2 ( echo %%a >> xyz.txt ) else ( set str=%%a set str=!str:#=! echo !str! >> xyz.txt ) ) As you can see they are not able to produce the required output.

  • How to round a number to n decimal places in Java

    - by Alex Spurling
What I'd like is a method to convert a double to a string which rounds using the half-up method. I.e. if the decimal to be rounded is a 5, it always rounds up the previous number. This is the standard method of rounding most people expect in most situations. I also would like only significant digits to be displayed. That is there should not be any trailing zeroes. I know one method of doing this is to use the String.format method: String.format("%.5g%n", 0.912385); returns: 0.91239 which is great, however it always displays numbers with 5 decimal places even if they are not significant: String.format("%.5g%n", 0.912300); returns: 0.91230 Another method is to use the DecimalFormatter: DecimalFormat df = new DecimalFormat("#.#####"); df.format(0.912385); returns: 0.91238 However as you can see this uses half-even rounding. That is it will round down if the previous digit is even. What I'd like is this: 0.912385 -> 0.91239 0.912300 -> 0.9123 What is the best way to achieve this in Java?

  • kernel panic after LVM setup

    - by Manuel Sopena Ballesteros
I broke my webserver... My setup is: VMWare ESXi environemt CPanel installed CentOS release 6.5 (Final) 4 CPUs 2G RAM 2x VM disks 100G each LVM system This was my previous storage settings (the server was working fine at this time): # df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/vg_test01-lv_root 95G 1.4G 88G 2% / tmpfs 939M 0 939M 0% /dev/shm /dev/sdb1 99G 188M 94G 1% /tmp /dev/sda1 485M 54M 407M 12% /boot My web developer asked me to merge /tmp and / disks so this is what I did: Delete /dev/sdb1 partition using fdisk Create a new partition as LVM on /dev/sdb1 using fdisk Create a new physical volume -- pvcreate /dev/sdb1 Extend volume group -- vgextend /dev/sdb1 vg_test01 Extend logical volume -- lvextend -l +100%FREE /dev/vg_test01/lv_root Resize filesystem -- resize2fs /dev/vg_test01/lv_root This is the new configuration: # df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/vg_test01-lv_root 213G 105G 97G 52% / tmpfs 939M 0 939M 0% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 485M 54M 407M 12% /boot /usr/tmpDSK 4.0G 145M 3.6G 4% /tmp Since I have the new settings my web server is throwing kernel panics quite often (around every 2 days). The message says: INFO: task <taskName>:<pid> blocked for more than 120 seconds. The list of process affected that I can see from the console are: mysqld queueprocd httpd suphp vmtoolsd loop0 auditd The only way I can fix this is reseting (cold reboot) the VM. • Weird UPD packets on incoming FTP MLSD command

    - by FractalizeR
Hello. I am developing a firewall script for my server. So far it is working fine, except for FTP. Server is dedicated, CentOS based with static IP. There is no NAT between me and server. IPTables is a firewall. Here is a script I use to configure iptables: http://pastebin.com/f54a70fec I allow all RELATED and ESTABLISHED connections in it and load all conn_track modules. I supposed it to be sufficient in order FTP to work with iptables. The problem is that FTP is not working either in passive or active mode. FileZilla and TotalCommander just hangs on MLSD FTP command. In the server log at the exact moment of FTP connection some weird packets are dropped by firewall: Dec 20 15:37:09 server ntpd[12329]: synchronized to 81.200.8.213, stratum 5 Dec 20 15:37:14 server proftpd[30526]: gsmforum.ru (::ffff:95.24.7.25[::ffff:95.24.7.25]) - FTP session opened. • Puppet's automatically generated certificates failing

I am running a default configuration of Puppet on Debian Squeeze 6.0.4. The server's FQDN is master.example.com. The client's FQDN is client.example.com. I am able to contact the puppet master and send a CSR. I sign it using puppetca -sa but the client will still not connect. • Free space on Dedi' in CentOS

    - by Trance84
It will sound stupid but i need to figure out how much disk space i have in my dedicated server, it runs CentOS6...the last command i issued was this [root@ks34900 ~]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on rootfs 9.7G 6.4G 2.9G 69% / /dev/root 9.7G 6.4G 2.9G 69% / none 1000M 288K 1000M 1% /dev /dev/sda2 914G 200M 868G 1% /home But again, stupid as it may sound... i cant figure out how much space i have in "/" folder (root) And is it possible that "/usr" have a different space (partition)?

  • Tracking down rogue disk usage

    - by Amadan
I found several other questions regarding the theory behind my problem (e.g. this, this), but I don't know how to apply the answers to my machine. # du -hsx / 11000283 / # df -kT / Filesystem Type 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/csisv13-root ext4 516032952 361387456 128432532 74% / There is a big difference between 11G (du) and 345G (df). • How to strip logfile with grep to remove various dispensable information?

My logfile has the following format: Dec 26 13:11:48 192.168.1.1 kernel: ACCEPT IN=br0 OUT=vlan1 SRC=192.168.1.2 DST=74.125.43.147 LEN=44 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=63 ID=9312 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=11733 DPT=80 WINDOW=5840 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0 OPT (020405B4) Now i'm trying to remove some dispensable information to make the output better readable and well arranged and put it into a new file. The result should look like this and should only have the following information: Dec 26 13:11:48 192.168.1.2 74.125.43.147 TCP SPT=11733 DPT=80 How to do it?

  • Zabbix not getting data for one filesystem

    - by Dennis Williamson
I have Zabbix monitoring disk space for several volumes on several servers. It works fine on all of them except for one of the volumes on one of the servers which always reports as 0. However, when I run ./zabbix_get -s localhost -p 10050 -k 'vfs.fs.size[/home, free]' locally on the machine in question, it gives me the correct, non-zero size which matches the output of df. How can I go about troubleshooting and correcting this problem?

  • What will happen if on my DB server I'll run out of space?

    - by Noam
I'm seeing a hugh difference of free disk space between df -h and du -sxh / I've understood in my question Resolving unix server disk space not adding up that du -sxh / is a better estimation as to when I will run out of disk space. Having said that, assuming in my case the above sentence will prove to be wrong and I will run soon out of disk space, what will happen? I assume the MySQL will fail INSERT queries, but other than that, will I just need to delete some files or will it be a problematic situation?
