  • Designing A 2-Way SSL RESTful API

    - by Mithir
I am starting to develop a WCF API, which should serve some specific clients. We don't know which devices will be using the API so I thought that using a RESTful API will be the most flexible choice. All devices using the API would be authenticated using an SSL certificate (client side certificate), and our API will have a certificate as well ( so its a 2 Way SSL) I was reading this question over SO, and I saw the answers about authentication using Basic-HTTP or OAuth, but I was thinking that in my case these are not needed, I can already trust the client because it possesses the client-side certificate. Is this design ok? Am I missing anything? Maybe there's a better way of doing this?

  • WCF service and security

    - by Gaz83
Been building a WP7 app and now I need it to communicate to a WCF service I made to make changes to an SQL database. I am a little concerned about security as the user name and password for accessing the SQL database is in the App.Config. I have read in places that you can encrypt the user name and password in the config file. As the username and password is never exposed to the clients connected to the WCF service, would security in my situation be much of a problem? Just in case anyone suggests a method of security, I do not have SSL on my web server.

  • WCF Keep Alive: Whether to disable keepAliveEnabled

    - by Lijo
I have a WCF web service hosted in a load balanced environment. I do not need any WCF session related functionality in the service. QUESTION What are the scenarios in which performances will be best if keepAliveEnabled = false keepAliveEnabled = true Reference From Load Balancing By default, the BasicHttpBinding sends a connection HTTP header in messages with a Keep-Alive value, which enables clients to establish persistent connections to the services that support them. This configuration offers enhanced throughput because previously established connections can be reused to send subsequent messages to the same server. However, connection reuse may cause clients to become strongly associated to a specific server within the load-balanced farm, which reduces the effectiveness of round-robin load balancing. If this behavior is undesirable, HTTP Keep-Alive can be disabled on the server using the KeepAliveEnabled property with a CustomBinding or user-defined Binding.

  • WCF Restful services getting error 400 (bad request) when post xml data

    - by Wayne Lo
    I am trying to self host a WCF services and calling the services via javascript. It works when I pass the request data via Json but not xml (400 bad request). Please help. Contract: public interface iSelfHostServices { [OperationContract] [WebInvoke(Method = "POST", UriTemplate = INFOMATO.RestTemplate.hello_post2,RequestFormat = WebMessageFormat.Xml, ResponseFormat = WebMessageFormat.Xml, BodyStyle = WebMessageBodyStyle.Wrapped)] Stream hello_post2(string helloString); } Server side code: public Stream hello_post2(string helloString) { if (helloString == null) { WebOperationContext.Current.OutgoingResponse.StatusCode = System.Net.HttpStatusCode.BadRequest; return null; } WebOperationContext.Current.OutgoingResponse.StatusCode = System.Net.HttpStatusCode.OK; return new MemoryStream(Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(helloString)); } JavaScript: function testSelfHost_WCFService_post_Parameter() { var xmlString = "<helloString>'hello via Post'</helloString>"; Ajax_sendData("hello/post2", xmlString); } function Ajax_sendData(url, data) { var request = false; request = getHTTPObject(); if (request) { request.onreadystatechange = function() { parseResponse(request); }; request.open("post", url, true); request.setRequestHeader("Content-Type", "text/xml; charset=utf-8"); charset=utf-8"); request.send(data); return true; } } function getHTTPObject() { var xhr = false; if (window.XMLHttpRequest) { xhr = new XMLHttpRequest(); } else if (window.ActiveXObject) {...} }

  • Calling WCF service with parameter using jQuery

    - by Remi Despres-Smyth
I'm trying to call a WCF web service hosted by IIS using jQuery. I can call it fine without any parameters, and I can also call it fine with a GET request that includes my parameter, but as soon as I try to send in the request via POST, the call is failing. The web service is currently nothing but: [OperationContract, WebInvoke] public ValidationResultSummary TestValidateOn( object day) { return null; } I've set the parameter to object, to make sure the issue isn't something with type coercion. With a breakpoint in the web service, I know the call without parameters as well as the GET call with param succeeds; in the latter the expected value is sent up. Calling code looks like: $.ajax({ // type: "GET", // url: "../Shared/Services/DomainServices.svc/TestValidateOn?day='12/Jan/2010'", type: "POST", url: "../Shared/Services/DomainServices.svc/TestValidateOn", // data: "{ }", --This works if object type param, calls with null data: "{'day': " + selectedDate + "}", // This fails miserably // data: "{'day': '" + selectedDate + "'}", --This also fails miserably contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", dataType: "json", success: function(data) { displayResults(data.d); }, error: function(xmlHttpReq, status, errThrown) { displayError(xmlHttpReq, status, errThrown); } }); The POST call never reaches my breakpoint, and on the client, error 500 - "Internal Server Error" - is returned. Any help would be appreciated.

  • When to use SOAP over REST

So, how does REST based services differ from SOAP based services, and when should you use SOAP? Representational State Transfer (REST) implements the standard HTTP/HTTPS as an interface allowing clients to obtain access to resources based on requested URIs. An example of a URI may look like this http://mydomain.com/service/method?parameter=var1&parameter=var2. It is important to note that REST based services are stateless because http/https is natively stateless. One of the many benefits for implementing HTTP/HTTPS as an interface is can be found in caching. Caching can be done on a web service much like caching is done on requested web pages. Caching allows for reduced web server processing and increased response times because content is already processed and stored for immediate access. Typical actions performed by REST based services include generic CRUD (Create, Read, Update, and Delete) operations and operations that do not require state. Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) on the other hand uses a generic interface in order to transport messages. Unlike REST, SOAP can use HTTP/HTTPS, SMTP, JMS, or any other standard transport protocols. Furthermore, SOAP utilizes XML in the following ways: Define a message Defines how a message is to be processed Defines the encoding of a message Lays out procedure calls and responses As REST aligns more with a Resource View, SOAP aligns more with a Method View in that business logic is exposed as methods typically through SOAP web service because they can retain state. In addition, SOAP requests are not cached therefore every request will be processed by the server. As stated before Soap does retain state and this gives it a special advantage over REST for services that need to preform transactions where multiple calls to a service are need in order to complete a task. Additionally, SOAP is more ideal for enterprise level services that implement standard exchange formats in the form of contracts due to the fact that REST does not currently support this. A real world example of where SOAP is preferred over REST can be seen in the banking industry where money is transferred from one account to another. SOAP would allow a bank to perform a transaction on an account and if the transaction failed, SOAP would automatically retry the transaction ensuring that the request was completed. Unfortunately, with REST, failed service calls must be handled manually by the requesting application. References: Francia, S. (2010). SOAP vs. REST. • WCF web service Data Members defaulting to null

    - by James
    I am new to WCF and created a simple REST service to accept an order object (series of strings from XML file), insert that data into a database, and then return an order object that contains the results. To test the service I created a small web project and send over a stream created from an xml doc. The problem is that even though all of the items in the xml doc get placed into the stream, the service is nullifying some of them when it receives the data. For example lineItemId will have a value but shipment status will show null. I step through the xml creation and verify that all the values are being sent. However, if I clear the datamembers and change the names around, it can work. Any help would be appreciated. This is the interface code [ServiceContract] public interface IShipping { [OperationContract] [WebInvoke(Method = "POST", UriTemplate = "/Orders/UpdateOrderStatus/", BodyStyle=WebMessageBodyStyle.Bare)] ReturnOrder UpdateOrderStatus(Order order); } [DataContract] public class Order { [DataMember] public string lineItemId { get; set; } [DataMember] public string shipmentStatus { get; set; } [DataMember] public string trackingNumber { get; set; } [DataMember] public string shipmentDate { get; set; } [DataMember] public string delvryMethod { get; set; } [DataMember] public string shipmentCarrier { get; set; } } [DataContract] public class ReturnOrder { [DataMember(Name = "Result")] public string Result { get; set; } } This is what I'm using to send over an Order object: string lineId = txtLineItem.Text.Trim(); string status = txtDeliveryStatus.Text.Trim(); string TrackingNumber = "1x22-z4r32"; string theMethod = "Ground"; string carrier = "UPS"; string ShipmentDate = "04/27/2010"; XNamespace nsOrders = "http://tempuri.org/order"; XElement myDoc = new XElement(nsOrders + "Order", new XElement(nsOrders + "lineItemId", lineId), new XElement(nsOrders + "shipmentStatus", status), new XElement(nsOrders + "trackingNumber", TrackingNumber), new XElement(nsOrders + "delvryMethod", theMethod), new XElement(nsOrders + "shipmentCarrier", carrier), new XElement(nsOrders + "shipmentDate", ShipmentDate) ); HttpWebRequest request = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create("http://localhost:3587/Deposco.svc/wms/Orders/UpdateOrderStatus/"); request.Method = "POST"; request.ContentType = "application/xml"; try { request.ContentLength = myDoc.ToString().Length; StreamWriter sw = new StreamWriter(request.GetRequestStream()); sw.Write(myDoc); sw.Close(); using (HttpWebResponse response = (HttpWebResponse)request.GetResponse()) { StreamReader reader = new StreamReader(response.GetResponseStream()); string responseString = reader.ReadToEnd(); XDocument.Parse(responseString).Save(@"c:\DeposcoSvcWCF.xml"); } } catch (WebException wEx) { Stream errorStream = ((HttpWebResponse)wEx.Response).GetResponseStream(); string errorMsg = new StreamReader(errorStream).ReadToEnd(); }

  • BizTalk configuration broken following WCF hotfix installation

    - by Sir Crispalot
I usually post over on StackOverflow, but thought this was probably better suited to ServerFault. Please migrate if I'm wrong! I am developing a WCF service and a BizTalk application on my workstation at the moment. As part of the WCF service, I had to install hotfix 971493 from Microsoft which updates some core WCF assemblies. Following installation of that hotfix, I am now experiencing severe issues in my existing BizTalk application. When I attempt to configure the properties of an existing WCF-Custom receive location, I get this error: Error loading properties (System.IO.FileLoadException) The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) If I click OK (the same error repeats four times) I eventually see the WCF-Custom properties dialog. However if I click on the various tabs, I continue to receive errors: The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) (Microsoft.BizTalk.Adapter.Wcf.Admin) The WCF-Custom receive location was working yesterday, and I installed the hotfix this morning. I'm guessing these two are related, and that BizTalk somehow has a reference to the old WCF assemblies. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

  • WCF set bindings on service at runtime

    - by Dave
My app has to be installed on my client's webservers. Some clients want to use SSL and some do not. My app has a WCF service and I currently have to go into the web.config for each install and switch the security mode from to depending on the client's SSL situation. I am able to set the client bindings at runtime. However, I would like to know if there is a way to set the service bindings at runtime(on the server side).

  • WCF: Using Streaming and Username/Password authentication at the same time

    - by Kay
Hi, I have a WCF Service with the following requirements: a) The client requests a file from the server which is transferred as a Stream. Files may be 100MB or larger. I need streaming or chucking or whatever to make sure that IIS is not loading the whole package into memory before starting to send it. b) The client will transfer an ID to identify the file to be downloaded. The user should be authenticated by providing username/password. c) While the username/password part of the communication needs to be encrypted, encryption of the downloaded file is optional for our use case. My other services, where I am returning smaller files, I am using the following binding: <ws2007HttpBinding> <binding name="ws2007HttpExtern" maxReceivedMessageSize="65536000"> <security mode="Message"> <message clientCredentialType="UserName" /> </security> </binding> </ws2007HttpBinding> But, as I said, that is no good for streaming (Message encryption needs the complete message to encrypt and that is not the case when streaming). So, I asked Microsoft support and I got more or less the following proposal: <bindings> <basicHttpBinding> <binding name="basicStreaming" messageEncoding="Mtom" transferMode="StreamedResponse"> <security mode="Transport"> <transport clientCredentialType="Basic" /> </security> </binding> </bindings> <services> <service behaviorConfiguration="MyProject.WCFInterface.DownloadBehavior" name="MyProject.WCFInterface.DownloadFile"> <endpoint address="" binding="basicHttpBinding" bindingConfiguration="basicStreaming" contract="MyProject.WCFInterface.IDownloadFile" /> <endpoint address="mex" binding="mexHttpBinding" contract="IMetadataExchange" /> </service> </services> <behaviors> <serviceBehaviors> <behavior name="MyProject.WCFInterface.DownloadBehavior"> <serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="false" httpsGetEnabled="true" /> <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="true" /> </behavior> </serviceBehaviors> </behaviors> When I use this, I get the following error message: Could not find a base address that matches scheme https for the endpoint with binding BasicHttpBinding. Registered base address schemes are [http]. I am using the Web Development Server so far (for production IIS7). I have two questions. a) How would you configure WCF to achieve the goal? b) If the MS proposal is good: What I am doing wrong, the error message does not really help me. Thanks.

  • WCF chunking/streaming - make it transparent for client

    - by bybor
While developing WCF service i've faced problem of transferring large data as method params ( 4 Mb of raw size, not considering transfer/message overhead). The solution for this problem is to use chunking or streaming, but all the samples i've seen assume client is aware of used method and uses available block size for sending/receiving portions of data, and the problem (for me) is that it's not possible to call just one method, like SaveData(DataInformation info) but write wrapper method which will instead iterate smth like SaveDataChunk(byte[] buffer) Could it be somehow made transparent for client, just calling 'SaveData'?

  • How does LinqPad support WCF Data Services?

    - by user341127
LinqPad supports WCF Data Services. If you assign an URL, such as http://services.odata.org/Northwind/Northwind.svc/. It will list all available data objects and you can query them. I guess LinqPad generates all available data classes at run time by reflection.Emit. I am wondering who can show me to how to do so. Or maybe someone has done it before. Any feedback are appreciated. • Extending WCF Data Service to synthesize missing data on request

    - by Schneider
I have got a WCF Data Service based on a LINQ to SQL data provider. I am making a query "get me all the records between two dates". The problem is that I want to synthesize two extra records such that I always get records that fall on the start and end dates, plus all the ones in between which come from the database. Is there a way to "intercept" the request so I can synthesize these records and return them to the client? Thanks

  • WCF how to pass token for authentication?

    - by Kevin
I have a WCF service which would like to support basicHttpBinding and webHttpBinding. When the client successfully login, server will generate a token for client to pass to server on all the request make later. Question is how the client can pass the token to server? I don't want to add an extra parameter on every web method to hold the token.

  • Pattern for verifying authenticity of a request to WCF service

    - by fung
I have a client app that makes calls to a WCF service. This app is on a public computer that's easily accessible and anyone can easily copy the .EXE and .CONFIG of my app into another machine and start using it. Is there a pattern where I can check if the request is coming only from an app on a computer I installed it on and not on one it has been copied to? Thanks in advance.

  • Passing Certificate to Svcutil to generate proxy for OSB Service

    - by webwires
We are wanting to implement Two-Way SSL security from WCF to OSB Services. We have successfully deployed the certificates so that when you browse to the service with IE you get the appropriate prompt for certificate and then it takes you immediately to the WSDL. But, when you attempt to generate a proxy using svcutil as defined in steps 8 and 9 in this MSDN article. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc949005.aspx I get the error: A reply message was received for operation 'Get' with action 'http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/ws/2004/09/transfer/Get'. However, your client code requires action 'http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/ws/2004/09/transfer/GetResponse'. The OSB services are set to use Soap 1.2 and the svcutil.exe.config we use is identicle to the article except for the findValue and x509FindType. Instead we used the FindByThumbprint pointing to the "My" store name and "CurrentUser" store location. The cert is there and is the same cert we select from the IE prompt.

  • WCF Rest services for use with the repository pattern?

    - by mark smith
Hi there, I am considering moving my Service Layer and my data layer (repository pattern) to a WCF Rest service. So basically i would have my software installed locally (WPF client) which would call the Service Layer that exists via a Rest Service... The service layer would then call my data layer using a WCF Rest Service also OR maybe just call it via the DLL assembly I was hoping to understand what the performance would be like. Currently I have my datalayer and servicelayer installed locally via DLL Assemblies locally on the pc. Also i presume the WCF REST services won't support method overloading hance the same name but with a different signature?? I would really appreciate any feedback anyone can give. Thanks

  • How do I upload a file, process it and return a result file in a single request to a REST WCF service?

    - by sharptooth
I need to implement the following scenario in a REST service implemented in WCF: the user submits a binary file and a set of parameters the server consumes the file, does some clever work and generates a binary output file the user retrieves that binary result file and all that is done in a single operation from the client perspective. It's pretty easy in a non-REST service. How do I do that in a REST service? Where do I get started?
