• Problems with dynamic programming

  I've got difficulties with understanding dynamic programming, so I decided to solve some problems. I know basic dynamic algorithms like longest common subsequence, knapsack problem, but I know them because I read them, but I can't come up with something on my own :-( For example we have subsequence of natural numbers. Every number we can take with plus or minus. At the end we take absolute value of this sum. For every subsequence find the lowest possible result. in1: 10 3 5 4; out1: 2 in2: 4 11 5 5 5; out2: 0 in3: 10 50 60 65 90 100; out3: 5 explanation for 3rd: 5 = |10+50+60+65-90-100| what it worse my friend told me that it is simple knapsack problem, but I can't see any knapsack here. Is dynamic programming something difficult or only I have big problems with it?

• Dynamic SQL queries in code possible?

  Instead of hard coding sql queries like Select * from users where user_id =220202 can these be made dynamic like Select * from $users where $user_id = $input. Reason i ask is when changes are needed to table/column names i can just update it in one place and don't have to ask developers to go line by line to find all references to update. It is very time consuming. And I do not like the idea of exposing database stuff in the code. My major concern is load time. Like with dynamic pages, the database has to fetch the page content, same way if queries are dynamic first system has to lookup the references then execute the queries, so does it impact load times? I am using codeignitor PHP. If it it possible then the next question is where to store all the references? In the app, in a file, in the DB, and how?

  Hi all, I am creating dynamic label and textbox based on the number of values from the database for the selected item of the dropdownlist. Then the dynamic labels will have the names and the text box with the values. To retain the values of these controls im using Page_init event. So im using cache to hold the selectteditem from the dropdownlist. Problem: The process is going fine. But if i try to refresh the page no items are selected in the dropdown list but the cache is not getting clear so using this cache value dynamic control are creating. Geetha

• Returning objects with dynamic memory

  I'm having trouble figuring out a way to return an object (declared locally within the function) which has dynamic memory attached to it. The problem is the destructor, which runs and deletes the dynamic memory when the object goes out of scope, i.e. when I return it and want to use the data in the memory that has been deleted! I'm doing this for an overloaded addition operator. I'm trying to do something like: MyObj operator+( const MyObj& x, const MyObj& y ) { MyObj z; // code to add x and y and store in dynamic memory of z return z; } My destructor is simply: MyObj::~MyObj() { delete [] ptr; } Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

  Hello, I have a test suite to perform smoke tests. I have all my script stored in various classes but when I try and run the test suite I can't seem to get it working if it is in a class. I run this as a script and call in variables into the tests. I do not want to have to run the tests by os.system('python tests.py'). I was hoping to call the tests through the class I have like any other function. This need's to be called from a class as the script that I'm calling it from is Object Oriented. If anyone can get the code to be run using Call Tests I would appreciate it alot. Thanks for any help in advance.

The problem I seem to be having is when I retrieve and inspect the Fruits in a FruitBasket, I only retrieve the Fruit base class and can't get at the Fruit child class attributes. I think I understand what is happening--when the array is retrieved from the database, the only fields that are retrieved are the Fruit base class fields. But is there some way to get the child class attributes as well without multiple expensive database transactions?   Hi, I am using Eclipse 3.5 and I have created a project with some package structure along with the default package. I have one class in default package - Calculations.java and I want to make the use of that class in any of the package (for instance in com.company.calc). When I try to make the use of the class which is default package, its giving me compile error. Its not able to recognise the class in default package. Where is a problem? Calculations.java - source code public class Calculations{ native public int Calculate(int contextId); native public double GetProgress(int contextId); static { System.loadLibrary("Calc"); } } I can put my class in any other package. This class has some native method which is implemented in Delphi . If I put that class in any of the folder,I will have to make the change that DLL which I want to avoid(really - I can not).   Hi! I've problem regarding GUI with one Menu and one Order Class. I've created a variable to store how many items have been selected in the Menu Class. private int totalSelected; The var totalSelected is live updated. It can be changed anytime depending on actionPerformed() function.(Exp: totalSelected will add up all the selected items) In the Order Class, how can I access to the live update variable totalSelected in order to retrieve the live update value? When I invoke getTotalSelected() function inside the Menu Class, I will only obtain a 0 value. Thanks for your help ^^! • Designing a class in such a way that it doesn't become a "God object"

  I'm designing an application that will allow me to draw some functions on a graphic. Each function will be drawn from a set of points that I will pass to this graphic class. There are different kinds of points, all inheriting from a MyPoint class. For some kind of points it will be just printing them on the screen as they are, others can be ignored, others added, so there is some kind of logic associated to them that can get complex. How to actually draw the graphic is not the main issue here. What bothers me is how to make the code logic such that this GraphicMaker class doesn't become the so called God-Object. It would be easy to make something like this: class GraphicMaker { ArrayList<Point> points = new ArrayList<Point>(); public void AddPoint(Point point) { points.add(point); } public void DoDrawing() { foreach (Point point in points) { if (point is PointA) { //some logic here else if (point is PointXYZ) { //...etc } } } } How would you do something like this? I have a feeling the correct way would be to put the drawing logic on each Point object (so each child class from Point would know how to draw itself) but two problems arise: There will be kinds of points that need to know all the other points that exist in the GraphicObject class to know how to draw themselves. I can make a lot of the methods/properties from the Graphic class public, so that all the points have a reference to the Graphic class and can make all their logic as they want, but isn't that a big price to pay for not wanting to have a God class?

  Good afternoon people, I would like to know if (and if so how) it is possible to define a namespace as a constraint parameter in a generic class declaration. What I have is this: namespace MyProject.Models.Entities <-- Contains my classes to be persisted in db namespace MyProject.Tests.BaseTest <-- Obvious i think Now the decleration of my 'BaseTest' class looks like so; public class BaseTest<T> This BaseTest does little more (at the time of writing) than remove all entities that were added to the database during testing. So typically I will have a test class declared as: public class MyEntityRepositoryTest : BaseTest<MyEntity> What i would LIKE to do is something similar to the following: public class BaseTest<T> where T : <is of the MyProject.Models.Entities namespace> Now i am aware that it would be entirely possible to simply declare a 'BaseEntity' class from which all entities created within the MyProject.Models.Entities namespace will inherit from; public class BaseTest<T> where T : MyBaseEntity but...I dont actually need to, or want to. Plus I am using an ORM and mapping entities with inheritance, although possible, adds a layer of complexity that is not required. So, is it possible to constrain a generic class parameter to a namespace and not a specific type ? Thank you for your time.

  When I use the pimpl idiom, is it a good idea to put all the methods definitions inside the class definition? For example: // in A.h class A { class impl; boost::scoped_ptr<impl> pimpl; public: A(); int foo(); } // in A.cpp class A::impl { // method defined in class int foo() { return 42; } // as opposed to only declaring the method, and defining elsewhere: float bar(); }; A::A() : pimpl(new impl) { } int A::foo() { return pimpl->foo(); } As far as I know, the only problems with putting a method definition inside a class definition is that (1) the implementation is visible in files that include the class definition, and (2) the compiler may make the method inline. These are not problems in this case since the class is defined in a private file, and inlining has no effect since the methods are called in only one place. The advantage of putting the definition inside the class is that you don't have to repeat the method signature. So, is this OK? Are there any other issues to be aware of?

• Same random numbers from instantiated class

  I'm learning C# and created a class within my program that holds a random number generator: class RandomNumberGenerator { Random RNG = new Random(); // A bunch of methods that use random numbers are in here } Inside this class are a few methods that use the RNG. Data gets sent here from other parts of the program, gets processed, then gets returned. One of the methods does the following: // Method works something like this int Value1 = RNG.Next(x, y); int Value2 = RNG.Next(x, y); int Value3 = RNG.Next(x, y); The x, y values are to be sent here from another class. So, I have to create an instance of the RandomNumberGenerator within that class so I can call its methods and pass the x and y values to it. class DoStuff { RandomNumberGenerator Randomizer = new RandomNumberGenerator // Here I call a bunch of Randomizer methods that give me values I need } The problem in the above method is that I get the same numbers every time for all three values. I'm not sure if it's because they're so close together and Randomizer's seed value hasn't had time to change or if I'm doing something wrong when I create a new instance of the RandomNumberGenerator class. I've gone through a bunch of answers on here already and typically problems like this are due to people creating many new Random objects when they run methods (thus setting the seed for all of them to the same value), but the only new Random object I create is within the RandomNumberGenerator class. I then instantiate that once within the other class so I can pass it data and use its methods. Why is this happening and how would I fix this?

Within a form I have multiple fields with the class name .inputField if one of these fields is selected then the div associated with that element should be shown on focus and hidden on blur. However, when I implement the code below on selecting the second element the class is applied to both.   I'm using a Java class library that is in many ways incomplete: there are many classes that I feel ought to have additional member functions built in. However, I am unsure of the best practice of adding these member functions. Lets call the insufficient base class A. class A { public A(/*long arbitrary arguments*/) { //... } public A(/*long even more arbitrary arguments*/) { //... } public int func() { return 1; } } Ideally, I would like to add a function to A. However, I can't do that. My choice is between: class B extends A { //Implement ALL of A's constructors here public int reallyUsefulFunction() { return func()+1; } } and class AddedFuncs { public int reallyUsefulFunction(A a) { return a.func()+1; } } The way I see it, they both have advantages and disadvantages. The first choice gives a cleaner syntax than the second, and is more logical, but has problems: Let's say I have a third class, C, within the class library. class C { public A func() { return new A(/*...*/); } } As I see it, there is no easy way of doing this: C c; int useful = c.func().reallyUsefulFunction(); as the type returned by C.func() is an A, not a B, and you can't down-cast. So what is the best way of adding a member function to a read-only library class?

How can this be done in jQuery?

  I want to create a class that could hold any of a number of same type of classes. For example lets says I have a base class like follows: public class BaseClass { public string MyBaseString { get; set; } } And then I have a few derived classes like this: public class DerivedClass : BaseClass { public MyDerivedClassString { get; set; } } public class DerivedClass2 : BaseClass { public MyDerivedClass2String { get; set; } } Now I would like a class that accepts one of these implementations and does stuff with it. • Test disk recovery

  I had a 250GB hard disk having several NTFS partitions. The disk was a dynamic disk (created in windows). Now when I formatted windows (which was in another disk), the dynamic disk is shown as offline. I tried using the testdisk tool to recover the data and created a partial backup. Testdisk is able to list all partitions in the disk. All partitions are shown as type 'D' (Deleted). I want to change the 'D' to 'P' (Primary), 'L'(Logical), 'E' (Extended) appropriately and build a new partition table. If I can write the partition table to disk, the disk will be of 'basic' type and should be readable in all OS. What should be the appropriate partition types? I checked the files on the partitions and no OS was ound. So none of the partitions were bootable. Will randomly selecting P,L,E hurt the data in anyway?

  Being familiar with the software raid modes and dynamic disks from the server versions, I was wondering if there is a document or even just common crowd knowledge that indicated what software raid support was available for each version of Windows 7. Also - all the various raid levels supported for booting or just a data recovery mechanism (e.g. you can connect three RAID-5 dynamic disks to an already booted system). I would prefer to stay away from modified/copied DLL's from the server variants, as well - please note - this is Windows software RAID - not fake-raid from your BIOS or an add-on card.

• Excel 2007 Pivot Tables: Overlapping issue hampers my summary sheet

  I've created a Workbook that has 5 Pivot Tables (PT). I want to make a summary sheet that holds all these PT's, but when they expand the 'not allowed to overlap issue' causes me updating problems - they don't update/expand effectively. Therefore, can't be printed off easily. The sheet would basically help my users give their bosses a simple quick overview of the larger worksheet - this way they would be more inclined to fill it in (give a little too get a little philosophy). I had thought about using the Camera Tool, but I'm not sure how you could make it dynamic, or whether it can be dynamic with a PT? Any advice, links or step-by-steps are greatly appreciated.   I have a virtualbox disk I'd like to convert to a vmware disk. The disk is dynamic which makes it a lot more trickier. If I follow the instructions at http://xpapad.wordpress.com/2010/02/21/migrating-from-virtualbox-to-vmware-in-linux, the vdi-to-raw conversion will result in a 2 TB file. I don't even have that much disk space! The first step therefore seems to be a dynamic to static conversion of the virtualbox disk, right? How do I do that or is there perhaps a better way to convert to vmware? Help!

• Hardware needed for 2000 users? [closed]

  I have school assignment that is fairly well defined, requiring us to come up with a plan for an environment serving dynamic web applications to 2000 users, and should be able to scale up to six thousand. I have done plenty of research as far as load balancing, redundancy, UPSs, etc, but am having a hard time figuring out how much hardware is actually needed in the way of physical servers, ram, processing power, etc. The assignment states that the server will have a lot of dynamic code, email, and a database are required, all utilizing the appropriate microsoft service (MS SQL, Exchange, IIS). I already plan on splitting them out on to separate servers, but can't even fathom the hardware requirements of something that large scale. Could someone with experience weight in on this, or point me two some good articles?
