  • Is there a concise way to map a string to an enum in Objective-C?

    I have a string I want to parse and return an equivalent enum. I need to use the enum type elsewhere, and I think I like how I'm defining the class. The problem is that I don't know a good way to check the string against the enum values without being redundant about the order of the enums. typedef enum { ZZColorRed, ZZColorGreen, ZZColorBlue, } ZZColorType; - (ZZColorType)parseColor:(NSString *)inputString { // inputString will be @"red", @"green", or @"blue" (trust me) // how can I turn that into ZZColorRed, etc. without // redefining their order like this?   • How to strongly type properties in JavaScript that map to models in C# ?

    I'm not even sure if I worded the question right, but I'll try and explain as clearly as possible with an example: In the following example scenario: 1) Take a class such as this: public class foo { public string firstName {get;set;} public string lastName {get;set} } 2) Serialize that into JSON, pass it over the wire to the Browser. 3) Browser de-serializes this and turns the JSON into a JavaScript object so that you can then access the properties like this: var foo = deSerialize("*******the JSON from above**************"); alert(foo.firstName); alert(foo.lastName); What if now a new developer comes along working on this project decides that firstName is no longer a suitable property name. Lets say they use ReSharper to rename this property, since ReSharper does a pretty good job at finding (almost) all the references to the property and renaming them appropriately. However ReSharper will not be able to rename the references within the JavaScript code (#3) since it has no way of knowing that these also really mean the same thing. Which means the programmer is left with the responsibility of manually finding these references and renaming those too. The risk is that if this is forgotten, no one will know about this error until someone tests that part of the code, or worse, slip through to the customer. Back to the actual question: I have been trying to think of a solution to this to some how strongly type these property names when used in javascript, so that a tool like ReSharper can successfully rename ALL usages of the property? Here is what I have been thinking for example (This would obviously not work unless i make some kind of static properties) var foo = deSerialize("*******the JSON from above**************"); alert(foo.<%=foo.firstName.GetPropertyName()%>) alert(foo.<%=foo.lastName.GetPropertyName()%>) But that is obviously not practical.     I am developing a C# VS 2008 website, trying to add a Master file. I created a virtual directory in IIS housing the "Master" folder, containing the Master files. Now how do I reference these files from my website in VS? One problem is I do not know where I need to publish this Master folder to. Other problem is I do not know how to reference this Master file in my aspx Page directive. FYI, this master folder is physically located outside of c:\inetpub\ in a totally separate file location. Is this a problem?

    I am working on a project in which I have around 100000 addreses in major cities in India(it is a table in a database). I want to know if it is possible to obtain the distances to to nearest landmarks (Mall, Hospital, and Airport etc.). Ideally I want these distances to be mergeed to the parent table.     I have a class named SuperclassA, and an class named ClassA. ClassA inherits from SuperclassA. SuperclassA has got an property called something, so a very generic not-much-saying name. In ClassA, I want to have an property which maps to that something of SuperclassA. How could I do that? I want to make absolutely sure that any access to myBetterProperty results in accessing what's behind something. Assigning an value to myBetterProperty should result in assigning one to something, and vice versa. How to? Pointers set up in init? How would that look like? *self.myBetterProperty = &something; ? I'm not sure about that...

Is what I'm trying to achieve possible with SQLAlchemy? Is there a better way to structure the database to get the same behaviour of "dynamic columns"?

    We have 2 site that is linked by an IPSEC VPN to remote Cisco ASAs: Site 1 1.5Mb T1 Connection Cisco(1) 2841 Site 2 1.5Mb T1 Connection Cisco 2841 In addition: Site 1 has a 2nd WAN 3Mb bonded T1 Connection Cisco 5510 that connects to same LAN as Cisco(1) 2841. Basically, Remote Access (VPN) users connecting through Cisco ASA 5510 needs access to a service at the end of Site 2. This is due to the way the service is sold - Cisco 2841 routers are not under our management and it is setup to allow connection from local LAN VLAN 1 IP address 10.20.0.0/24. My idea is to have all traffic from Remote Users through Cisco ASA destined for Site 2 to go via the VPN between Site 1 and Site 2. The end result being all traffic that hits Site 2 has come via Site 1. I'm struggling to find a great deal of information on how this is setup. So, firstly, can anyone confirm that what I'm trying to achieve is possible? Secondly, can anyone help me to correct the configuration bellow or point me in the direction of an example of such a configuration?   • AJAX jQuery click results in function event being fired twice

    It is very common in Rails for an objects_controller controller to have RESTful edit and destroy actions like so: def edit @object = Object.find(params[:id]) end def destroy @object = Object.find(params[:id]) @object.destroy redirect_to :back end With an associated view that provides edit and destroy links like so: <%= link_to "Edit the Object", edit_object_path(object) %> <%= link_to "Delete", object, :confirm => 'Are you sure?', :method => :delete %> And it is easy to blow this up. If I open two browser windows, A and B, destroy an object with the "Delete" link in browser A and then press the "Edit" link in browser B, the find() in the edit action throws an exception. Obviously there are several ways to deal with this in the edit action: catch the exception and recover gracefully use @object = find(:first, "conditions... etc. and test the @object before going further But seeing as this is such a common pattern, I would love to know how other folks deal with this situation.

    I generated a height map with the diamond square algorithm. The thing is i do not manage to create islands, this is, restrict the height other than water level range to a certain value in the center of the map. I manualy seeded a circle in the middle of the map but the rest of the map still receives heights over the water level. I dont fully understand the Perlin noise algorithm so i'd like to work with my current implementation of the diamond square algorithm which took me 3 days to interpret and code in PHP. :P

  • Game Design Dilemma

    I'm working on a 2d tilemapped RPG. I've actually made quite a fair amount of progress, but I'm at a point where I need to make a UI decision. I have the overland world completely mapped out, and I have several towns and special areas. I'm on the fence about how to integrate the two. Scenario 1: I have one ginormous map, where everything is the same scale. This means you can walk in and out of towns without having to load or wait and transition in any way. With everything the same scale, movement costs the same no matter where you are (in terms of time/turns/energy/hunger/whatever/etc...)  The potential downside to this is that it could take quite a long time to get anywhere on foot. Scenario 2: I have an overland map, a set of town maps, overland tactical maps, dungeon maps & special area maps. The overland map is at a different scale than the other maps. This means that time/turns/energy/hunger/whatever/etc is calculated at a different rate than on the other maps, which have a 1:1 scale. When entering a town, dungeon, special area or having a random encounter, you would effectively zoom in from the overland scale to the tactical scale. When you are done with combat, or exit a dungeon or town, it would zoom back out to the overland map. The downside to this is that at the zoomed out scale, the overland map isn't all that big (comparitively) and you can traverse it fairly quickly (in real time, not game world time.) Options: 1) Go with scenario 1, as is. 2) Go with scenario 1 and introduce a slightly speedier version of overland travel, such as a horse. 3) Go with scenario 1 and introduce "instant" travel, via portals or some kind of "click the big map" mechanism. This would only work with places you've already been, or somehow unlocked (perhaps via a quest.) 4) Go with Scenario 2, as is.   Thoughts, opinions, suggestions?  Feedback appreciated.
