  • Service Layer - how broad should it be, and should it also be used from the local application?

    - by BornToCode
The background: I need to build a desktop application with some operations (CRUD and more) (=winforms), I need to make another application which will re-use some of the functions of the main application (=webforms). I'm using service layer for reusing my functions. The service is calling the functions on the BL layer (correct me if I'm doing this wrong). so my desktop has 4 projects - DAL, BL, UI, WEBSERVICES. The dilemma (simple but I still need some more experienced opinions): In my main winform UI - should I call the functions from the BL - bl.getcustomers(), or do it similar to how I call it in the webform, and call the functions from the service - webservices.getcustomers? Should I create a service for every single function on the BL even if I need some of the functions only in one UI? for example - should I create services for all the CRUD operations, even though I need to re-use only update operation in the webform? YOUR HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED

  • How much a programmer should read in order to keep himself updated? [closed]

    - by anything
There are lots of technical books available. Below are few links which lists some good books If you could only have one programming related book on your bookshelf what would it be and why? What non-programming books should a programmer read to help develop programming/thinking skills? Best books on the theory and practice of software architecture? http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1711/what-is-the-single-most-influential-book-every-programmer-should-read ... and the list can go on and on and on. It will be really difficult to read all of the above mentioned books. I am not sure if its even possible for anyone to do that. Even if you filter it based on one's area of interest or work, list is still very large. .. and the technology keeps on changing (even more books :-( ) So, my question is how much a programmer should read lets say per year? How much hours one should put in such activities to keep oneself up to date? How do we find out the time required? PS: Average programmer reads less than one book per year (Code complete). What about the good programmers?

  • Is libunity planning on including functions for Unity Places?

    - by SaidKLE
I am unclear on this, because I have heard mention of a proposed API for Unity Places, and such an API would be extremely useful for projects involving home automation. I am interested in developing in that direction, but I haven't been able to find the API for Unity Places. It would make the most sense of libunity was to include Unity Places because it would put all the functionality of the Unity launcher into one place. If libunity is not the API for UPs, does such an API exist, and how would I find it?

  • Does putting types/functions inside namespace make compiler's parsing work easy?

    - by iammilind
Retaining the names inside namespace will make compiler work less stressful!? For example: // test.cpp #include</*iostream,vector,string,map*/> class vec { /* ... */ }; Take 2 scenarios of main(): // scenario-1 using namespace std; // comment this line for scenario-2 int main () { vec obj; } For scenario-1 where using namespace std;, several type names from namespace std will come into global scope. Thus compiler will have to check against vec if any of the type is colliding with it. If it does then generate error. In scenario-2 where there is no using namespace, compiler just have to check vec with std, because that's the only symbol in global scope. I am interested to know that, shouldn't it make the compiler little faster ?

  • How to layer if statements when order of logic is irrelevant?

    - by jimmyjimmy
Basically I have a series of logic in my website that can lead to 5 total outcomes. Basically two different if tests and then a catch all else statement. For example: if cond1: if mod1: #do things elif mod2: #do things elif cond2: if mod1: #do things elif mod2 #do things else: #do things I was thinking about rewriting it like this: if cond1 and mod1: #do things elif cond1 and mod2: #do things elif cond2 and mod1: #do things elif cond2 and mod2: #do things else: #do things Is there any real difference in these two coding options/a better choice for this kind of logic testing?

  • Do you need expensive servers and fancy hosting in order to make a multiplayer game?

    - by ThePlan
I've finished working on an RPG and it would seem so much more fun to make it multiplayer. SFML has a networking feature, I figured it's possible but then again, never in my life have I even tried something basic about networking, in fact my knowledge of it is very limited. What would it take to make a multiplayer game resource-wise? I'm not talking about an MMO, more like a co-op type of game. Do I need mountains of cash to pay for hosting and servers and many many things to make one?

  • Is it correct to add booleans in order to count the number of true values in a vector?

    - by gerrit
Is it conceptually correct to sum a vector of booleans? From a mathematical point of view, I would argue it's not: True + True != 2. But it's quite practical to do so still! Example using the vectorised Python library numpy: In [1]: X = rand(10) In [2]: large = X>0.6 In [3]: large.dtype Out[3]: dtype('bool') In [4]: large.sum() Out[4]: 7 I don't like it, but it's very practical. Is this a good practice? Update: the aim is to count the number of true values in a vector.

  • Is it better to return NULL or empty values from functions/methods where the return value is not present?

    - by P B
I am looking for a recommendation here. I am struggling with whether it is better to return NULL or an empty value from a method when the return value is not present or cannot be determined. Take the following two methods as an examples: string ReverseString(string stringToReverse) // takes a string and reverses it. Person FindPerson(int personID) // finds a Person with a matching personID. In ReverseString(), I would say return an empty string because the return type is string, so the caller is expecting that. Also, this way, the caller would not have to check to see if a NULL was returned. In FindPerson(), returning NULL seems like a better fit. Regardless of whether or not NULL or an empty Person Object (new Person()) is returned the caller is going to have to check to see if the Person Object is NULL or empty before doing anything to it (like calling UpdateName()). So why not just return NULL here and then the caller only has to check for NULL. Does anyone else struggle with this? Any help or insight is appreciated.

  • For nodejs what are best design practices for native modules which share dependencies?

    - by Mark Essel
Hypothetical situation, I have 3 node modules all native, A, B, and C.  A is a utilities module which exposes several functions to javascript through the node interface, in addition it declares/defines a rich set of native structures and functions B is a module which is dependent on data structures and source in A, it exposes some functions to javascript, in addition it declares/defines native structures and functions C is a module which is dependent on data structures and source in A & B, it exploses some functions to javascript, in addition it declares/defines native structures and functions So far when setting up these modules I have a preinstall script to install other dependent includes, but in order to access all of another modules source what is the best way to link to it's share library object (*.node) ? Is there an alternative best practice for native modules (such as installing all source from other modules before building that single module)? Reply

  • How to elegantly work with a lot of print functions?

    - by user1824372
I'm working on a Python project that is executed on a terminal (or console) for which I am planning to implement a GUI. I did not major in CS so I really have no idea how to effectively design a terminal GUI such that: the user interface looks good in GUI, it is directed to a certain widget, let's say, a text label, or a bottom bar, or a hide-able frame. Do you have any suggestions? Currently, I am using the print function to provide essential information on STDOUT during execution, so a lot of print calls are distributed here and there in the code. I'm thinking of using macro-like variables such as 'FILE_NOT_EXISTS_MESSAGE' for printing, and all of them and their values would be defined in one file. Is that a standard way to do this? Should I introduce a logging system? In summary, I'm looking for a pattern for handling console output that is effective and adaptable.

  • What class to use in order to have a number move around the screen?

    - by AllenZ41
What i am trying to accomplish is have a randomly created number move around the screen but it is touchable. I am planning to have lots of numbers on the screen, so my question is what class is appropriate to use, so I could set a number randomly at run time and display it while it moves around the screen? I was planning the use a TextView, since I want to use a custom font of mine but I think creating a bunch at a time could cause a memory problem and to my understanding they cant move around the screen at runtime.

  • How do I make the "change order" button appear in SharePoint 2010?

    - by Jan Aagaard
How do I make the "change order" button appear in SharePoint 2010? I have followed a guide that allowed me to add OrderedList="TRUE" to my list template. This makes it possible to select "Allow users to order items in this view" for my view. But the change order button is still missing. Any idears on what I am missing? I am using SharePoint 2010 and the guide is from 2006, so that might explain why it doesn't just work. The guide from tech-archive.net.

  • How to order <script> tags vs. <style> tags in HTML markup for best results.

    - by Tchalvak
I'm building up my site over at http://royronalds.com, and I'm trying to figure out what order of elements in the <head> makes most sense. Just to take from what I current have, I have: <head> <style> external stylesheet <meta> <title> <link> to favicon <script> for jQuery <script> main javascript for site <script> google analytics, asynchronous script. </head> Are there reasons to order these differently so that load times and other issues happen more smoothly, and if so, what would the ideal order be?

  • how to remove duplicates but keep the same order?

    - by Ben Fossen
I have a cell array in Matlab y = { 'd' 'f' 'a' 'g' 'g' 'a' 'w' 'h'} I use unique(y) to get rid of the duplicates but it rearranges the strings in alphabetica order >> unique(y) ans = 'a' 'd' 'f' 'g' 'h' 'w' Like this I want to remove the duplicates but keep the same order. I know I could write a function do do this but was wondering if there was a simpler way using unique to remove duplicates while keeping the same order just with the duplicates removed. I want it to return this >> unique(y) ans = 'd' 'f' 'a' 'g' 'w' 'h'

  • How to display a DateTime with chosen date parts, but in the order of the FormatProvider?

    - by Stephane
I want to display the date in the order that the culture provides, but with the elements I want only. The DateTime.Tostring() method has a list of patterns that are very useful but I would like a very small change in it. The CultureInfo used in the following the following code are chosen as example, I don't want to rely on a specific list of CultureInfo, if possible var now = DateTime. Now; string nowString = now.ToString("m", CultureInfo.GetCultureInfo("en-us")); Console.WriteLine(nowString); nowString = now.ToString("m", CultureInfo.GetCultureInfo("fr-FR")); Console.WriteLine(nowString); displays : April 12 12 avril I would like a pattern that display the abbreviation of the month and the day, but that keeps the correct order from the specified CultureInfo. using the pattern "MMM dd" will always display the month's abbreviation first, followed by the day, breaking the french order for example. Any way to achieve that without too much custom code?

  • CouchDB emit with lookup key that is array, such that order of array elements are ignored.

    - by MatternPatching
When indexing a couchdb view, you can emit an array as the key such as: emit(["one", "two", "three"], doc); I appreciate the fact that when searching the view, the order is important, but sometimes I would like the view to ignore it. I have thought of a couple of options. 1. By convention, just emit the contents in alphabetical order, and ensure that looking up uses the same convention. 2. Somehow hash in a manner that disregards the order, and emit/search based on that hash. (This is fairly easy, if you simply hash each one individually, "sum" the hashes, then mod.) Note: I'm sure this may be covered somewhere in the authoritative guide, but I was unsuccessful in finding it.

  • Customize the Default Screensavers in Windows 7 and Vista

    - by Matthew Guay
Windows 7 and Vista include a nice set of backgrounds, but unfortunately most of them aren’t configurable by default.  Thanks to a free app and some registry changes, however, you can make the default screensavers uniquely yours! Customize the default screensavers If you’ve ever pressed the Customize button on most of the default screensavers in Windows 7 and Vista, you were probably greeted with this message: A little digging in the registry shows that this isn’t fully correct.  The default screensavers in Vista and 7 do have options you can set, but they’re not obvious.  With the help of an app or some registry tips, you can easily customize the screensavers to be uniquely yours.  Here’s how you can do it with an app or in the registry. Customize Windows Screensavers with System Screensavers Tweaker Download the System Screensavers Tweaker (link below), and unzip the folder.  Run nt6srccfg.exe in the folder to tweak your screensavers.  This application lets you tweak the screensavers’ registry settings graphically, and it works great in all editions of Windows Vista and 7, including x64 versions. Change any of the settings you want in the screensaver tweaker, and click Apply. To preview the changes to your screensaver, open the Screen Saver settings window as normal by right-clicking on the desktop, and selecting Personalize. Click on the Screensaver button on the bottom right. Now, select your modified screensaver, and click Preview to see your changes. You can change a wide variety of settings for the Bubbles, Ribbons, and Mystify screensavers in Windows 7 and Vista, as well as the Aurora screensaver in Windows Vista.  The tweaks to the Bubbles screensaver are especially nice.  Here’s how the Bubbles look without transparency. And, by tweaking a little more, you get a screensaver that looks more like a screen full of marbles. Ribbons and Mystify each have less settings, but still can produce some unique effects.   How’s that for a brilliant screensaver? And, if you want to return your screensavers to their default settings, simply run the System Screensavers Tweaker and select Reset to defaults on any screensaver you wish to reset. Customize Windows Screensavers in the Registry If you prefer to roll up your sleeves and tweak Windows under-the-hood, then here’s how you can customize the screensavers yourself in the Registry.  Type regedit into the search box in the Start menu, browse to the key for each screensaver, and add or modify the DWORD values listed for that screensaver using the Decimal base. Please Note: Tweaking the Registry can be difficult, so if you’re unsure, just use the tweaking application above. Also, you’ll probably want to create a System Restore Point.   Bubbles To edit the Bubbles screensaver, browse to the following in regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Screensavers\Bubbles Now, add or modify the following DWORD values to tweak the screensaver: MaterialGlass – enter 0 for solid or 1 for transparent bubbles Radius – enter a number between 1090000000 and 1130000000; the larger the number, the larger the bubbles’ radius ShowBubbles – enter 0 to show a black background or 1 to show the current desktop behind the bubbles ShowShadows – enter 0 for no shadow or 1 for shadows behind the bubbles SphereDensity – enter a number from 1000000000 to 2100000000; the higher the number, the more bubbles on the screen. TurbulenceNumOctaves – enter a number from 1 to 255; the higher the number, the faster the bubble colors will change. Ribbons To edit the Ribbons screensaver, browse to the following in regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Screensavers\Ribbons Now, add or modify the following DWORD values to tweak the screensaver: Blur – enter 0 to prevent ribbons from fading, or 1 to have them fade away after a few moments. Numribbons – enter a number from 1 to 100; the higher the number, the more ribbons on the screen. RibbonWidth – enter a number from 1000000000 to 1080000000; the higher the number, the thicker the ribbons. Mystify To edit the Mystify screensaver, browse to the following in regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Screensavers\Mystify Now, add or modify the following DWORD values to tweak the screensaver: Blur – enter 0 to prevent lines from fading, or 1 to have them fade away after a few moments. LineWidth – enter a number from 1000000000 to 1080000000; the higher the number, the wider the lines. NumLines – enter a number from 1 to 100; the higher the value, the more lines on the screen. Aurora – Windows Vista only To edit the Aurora screensaver in Windows Vista, browse to the following in regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Screensavers\Aurora Now, add or modify the following DWORD values to tweak the screensaver: Amplitude – enter a value from 500000000 to 2000000000; the higher the value, the slower the motion. Brightness – enter a value from 1000000000 to 1050000000; the higher the value, the brighter the affect. NumLayers – enter a value from 1 to 15; the higher the value, the more aurora layers displayed. Speed – enter a value from 1000000000 to 2100000000; the higher the value, the faster the cycling. Conclusion Although the default screensavers are nice, they can be boring after awhile with their default settings.  But with these tweaks, you can create a variety of vibrant screensavers that should keep your desktop fresh and interesting. • My Boot order changed. Why?

    - by Chris
I have a laptop running Windows XP SP3 with one internal hard drive partitioned into C: (system), D: (storage) and I have an external hard drive, F: (external drive). Yesterday the machine was running fine. Today, I go back to it and see that it's just showing a blinking cursor. Checked through the BIOS and the hard drive checked out fine. CTRL-ALT-DELETED the machine a few times, but I was never able to boot back into the operating system. I threw in a live CD and found out that the boot order of the drives has changed. The external drive is now C:, the system partiton is D:, and the storage partition is E:. Does anyone have any idea of how or why this would have occured? Auto system updates are turned off so there should have been no automatic reboot of the system overnight, and anti-virius runs on the machine and has found no infections before this occured. Edit When I was looking through the BIOS of the machine, I did see that the boot order was changed. But still the same question remains, what would have caused this to happen? I can't believe that a random reboot happened and totally changed my hard drive setup.

  • How can I systematically shut down Windows services in order?

    - by cbmeeks
We have this open source application that has three (3) services. For the purpose of this question, let's call them A, B, and C. Now, they have to be shut down in a specific order. That order would be A then B then C. If B shuts down before A then we run into all kinds of problems. Same is true if C shuts down before B or A. Plus, each service can take a different amount of time to shut down due to how many users were using it. Oh, this need to be wrapped up in a DOS batch file or something a non-techy user could just double-click to initiate. (PowerShell is not out of the question but I've never used it). Also, I'm a C# coder so that could be used too. Anyway, when the restart is initiated the following needs to happen: 1) Initiate shutdown of service A 2) When service A is down, it should trigger the shutdown of service B 3) When service B is down, it should trigger the shutdown of service C 4) When service C is down, it should trigger the START UP of service A 5) When service A is UP, it should trigger the START UP of service B 6) When service B is UP, it should trigger the START UP of service C So as you can see, each stop/start needs to wait on the previous to be completely finished before moving on. And since each service can take a few seconds to a few minutes, we can't use any kind of timing tricks. Suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Apache2 default vhost in alphabetical order or override with _default_ vhost?

    - by benbradley
I've got multiple named vhosts on an Apache web server (CentOS 5, Apache 2.2.3). Each vhost has their own config file in /etc/httpd/vhosts.d and these vhost config files are included from the main httpd conf with... Include vhosts.d/*.conf Here's an example of one of the vhost confs... NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName www.domain.biz ServerAlias domain.biz www.domain.biz DocumentRoot /var/www/www.domain.biz <Directory /var/www/www.domain.biz> Options +FollowSymLinks Order Allow,Deny Allow from all </Directory> CustomLog /var/log/httpd/www.domain.biz_access.log combined ErrorLog /var/log/httpd/www.domain.biz_error.log </VirtualHost> Now I when anyone tries to access the server directly by using the public IP address, they get the first vhost specified in the aggregated config (so in my case it's alphabetical order from the vhosts.d directory). Anyone accessing the server directly by IP address, I'd like them to just get an 403 or a 404. I've discovered several ways to set a default/catch-all vhost and some conflicting opinions. I could create a new vhost conf in vhosts.d called 000aaadefault.conf or something but that feels a bit nasty. I could have a <VirtualHost> block in my main httpd.conf before the vhosts.d directory is included. I could just specify a DocumentRoot in my main httpd.conf What about specifying a default vhost in httpd.conf with _default_ http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/vhosts/examples.html#default Would having a <VirtualHost _default_:*> block in my httpd.conf before I Include vhosts.d/*.conf be the best way for a catch-all?

  • Safe to pass objects to C functions when working in JNI Invocation API?

    - by bubbadoughball
I am coding up something using the JNI Invocation API. A C program starts up a JVM and makes calls into it. The JNIenv pointer is global to the C file. I have numerous C functions which need to perform the same operation on a given class of jobject. So I wrote helper functions which take a jobject and process it, returning the needed data (a C data type...for example, an int status value). Is it safe to write C helper functions and pass jobjects to them as arguments? i.e. (a simple example - designed to illustrate the question): int getStatusValue(jobject jStatus) { return (*jenv)->CallIntMethod(jenv,jStatus,statusMethod); } int function1() { int status; jobject aObj = (*jenv)->NewObject (jenv, aDefinedClass, aDefinedCtor); jobject j = (*jenv)->CallObjectMethod (jenv, aObj, aDefinedObjGetMethod) status = getStatusValue(j); (*jenv)->DeleteLocalRef(jenv,aObj); (*jenv)->DeleteLocalRef(jenv,j); return status; } Thanks.

  • Howcome some C++ functions with unspecified linkage build with C linkage?

    - by christoffer
This is something that makes me fairly perplexed. I have a C++ file that implements a set of functions, and a header file that defines prototypes for them. When building with Visual Studio or MingW-gcc, I get linking errors on two of the functions, and adding an 'extern "C"' qualifier resolved the error. How is this possible? Header file, "some_header.h": // Definition of struct DEMO_GLOBAL_DATA omitted DWORD WINAPI ThreadFunction(LPVOID lpData); void WriteLogString(void *pUserData, const char *pString, unsigned long nStringLen); void CheckValid(DEMO_GLOBAL_DATA *pData); int HandleStart(DEMO_GLOBAL_DATA * pDAta, TCHAR * pLogFileName); void HandleEnd(DEMO_GLOBAL_DATA *pData); C++ file, "some_implementation.cpp" #include "some_header.h" DWORD WINAPI ThreadFunction(LPVOID lpData) { /* omitted */ } void WriteLogString(void *pUserData, const char *pString, unsigned long nStringLen) { /* omitted */ } void CheckValid(DEMO_GLOBAL_DATA *pData) { /* omitted */ } int HandleStart(DEMO_GLOBAL_DATA * pDAta, TCHAR * pLogFileName) { /* omitted */ } void HandleEnd(DEMO_GLOBAL_DATA *pData) { /* omitted */ } The implementations compile without warnings, but when linking with the UI code that calls these, I get a normal error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "int __cdecl HandleStart(struct _DEMO_GLOBAL_DATA *, wchar_t *) error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "void __cdecl CheckValid(struct _DEMO_MAIN_GLOBAL_DATA * What really confuses me, now, is that only these two functions (HandleStart and CheckValid) seems to be built with C linkage. Explicitly adding "extern 'C'" declarations for only these two resolved the linking error, and the application builds and runs. Adding "extern 'C'" on some other function, such as HandleEnd, introduces a new linking error, so that one is obviously compiled correctly. The implementation file is never modified in any of this, only the prototypes.
