Windows CE: Newsgroups Shutdown

As of June 1, 2010 many of the Windows CE newsgroups have been shut down by Microsoft, and the rest will be shut down by October 1, 2010. This is part of an overall Microsoft strategy to move community from newsgroups to web based forums. The newsgroups have been indexed by Google, so the existing content can and should be searched for answers using http://groups.google.com/advanced_search Microsoft has replaced the newsgroups with http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsembeddedcompact which has forums for OS Development, Managed Application Development and Native Application Development. Note that with the planned release for Q4 2010, Microsoft is renaming Windows Embedded CE to Windows Embedded Compact. This name change is reflected in the forum naming. Visualize flowchart diagram with multiple end symbols

I am looking for a standardize way to visualize the following hierarchical logic: The state of the thread is represented by the answers to the hierarchical set of question You can read this listing like a flowchart, you iterate over the questions decide, go one step deeper and so on. Therefore I thought the best way to visualize it, using a flowchart. The problem is, in this hierarchical set it is possible to end in more than one state and its totally valid. I have never seen a flowchart where you can enter more than one state. Is it still possible and I am missing the right symbol to present this logic or are flowchart not fitting anyway? What other graphical representation could I use, is there something fitting in UML? A non-deterministic state machine seems not to be intuitive enough, transfering it into a deterministic state machine would result in to many states, and so on.

The question here is simple: What are the clear and complete step-by-step instructions that you used to dual-boot 12.04 on your OSX Lion (entrapped) Apple computer. Did you use rEFIt, rEFIind, a special .iso of 12.04? What? Obviously, there is a preference for safer, easier, and more reversible methods. I can probably assure that the best answer will get plenty of views.

Windows 7 restarts PC when selected from GRUB Menu

I installed windows 7 on a RAID 5 (2@160GB SATA +1@160GB SATA for RAID 5) I then proceeded to install Ubuntu 11.10 using the Live CD and opted: "Install along side Windows 7 Option" Upon boot GRUB appears normally and I can select and run Ubuntu with no difficulties. When I select Windows 7 from GRUB the PC restarts and consequently goes back to GRUB. I have attempted to use the Windows 7 DVD to repair the installation but to no avail. The Wizard ran twice as it described it might, after the second attempt came back with an '...inability to repair...' error. I am sure there is an answer to this somewhere but I have yet to be able to find it. (2 weeks and countless attempts and searches before posting this question. Although I am happy to use Ubuntu alone my wife likes to watch Netflix and therein requires the Windows 7 installation. Any answers are appreciated and welcomed. Thanks in advance. Dan Still

I recently stumbled upon this question in which the contents a professional programmer's website should have were discussed and I agree with most of the answers there. However, I am by no means a professional programmer (just came out from university) and so I am a bit lost in what concerns the contents I should provide in the personal website I am designing for myself now. I do have a pretty nice job at a fast-growing software company but I would really like to present myself to the outside world in a nice but humble manner since my curriculum is by no means a long one. But I'd like to know what's coming out this year. Good answers can include: A game that's coming out in 2011 A Linux port being released for games that might be older (eg Trine) As much information and as many screenshots and links as possible Few old games unless they're doing a major update that changes the game very significantly. In Javascript event handling, why "return false" or "event.preventDefault()" and "stopping the event

It is said that when we handle a "click event", returning false or calling event.preventDefault() makes a difference, in which the difference is that preventDefault will only prevent the default event action to occur, i.e. a page redirect on a link click, a form submission, etc. and return false will also stop the event flow. Does that mean, if the click event is registered several times for several actions, using $('#clickme').click(function() { … }) returning false will stop the other handlers from running? I am on a Mac now and so can only use Firefox and Chrome but not IE, which has a different event model, and tested it on FF and Chrome and all 3 handlers ran without any stopping…. so what is the real difference, or, is there a situation where "stopping the event flow" is not desirable? this is related to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3042036/using-jquerys-animate-if-the-clicked-on-element-is-a-href-a and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2017755/whats-the-difference-between-e-preventdefault-and-return-false

Which framework would you recommend to use to add "social networking" components to a website?

Given which already enables users to create and publish content, is there a service or tool which can add the standard social networking suite of components? Specifically, I'm looking quickly add functionality which allows users to friend each other, vote on/like/rank content on the site, send each other links to parts they find interesting, chat and send offline message each other. There's no specific limitation on the technology used for these components - as long as its been proven to work, and scales without issue. I'd slightly prefer a solution which is offered as a service rather than one that I have to install. Edit Some additional commenter requested clarifications - there are no restrictions that the site imposes on user identification or authentication. Feel free to assume that portion of the work is not relevant to the answers.

Is there alternative way to sell android app?

I am a developer of android apps from Macedonia. So my country is not on the list of countries that one can sell paid app from (on the Android Market). I have a few apps ready for several months now and I am really struggling to find a way, alternative to sell my apps and have it licensed. I know that there are several markets that sell android app, but I want my apps to be licensed as well, and that is very important to me. I know that there are many countries that are not on that list, so if there are developers that had similar experience and solved their problems, please share your experience with me. What's the best way to explain parsing to a new programmer?

I am a college student getting my Computer Science degree. A lot of my fellow students really haven't done a lot of programming. They've done their class assignments, but let's be honest here those questions don't really teach you how to program. I have had several other students ask me questions about how to parse things, and I'm never quite sure how to explain it to them. Is it best to start just going line by line looking for substrings, or just give them the more complicated lecture about using proper lexical analysis, etc. to create tokens, use BNF, and all of that other stuff? They never quite understand it when I try to explain it. What's the best approach to explain this without confusing them or discouraging them from actually trying.

Are there any empirical studies on the effect of different languages on software quality?

The proponents of functional programming languages assert that functional programming makes it easier to reason about code. Those in favor of statically typed languages say that their compilers catch enough errors to make up for the additional complexity of type systems. But everything I read on these topics is based on rational argument, not on empirical data. Are there any empirical studies on what effects the different categories of programming languages have on defect rates or other quality metrics? (The answers to this question seem to indicate that there are no such studies, at least not for the dynamic vs. static debate)

Why aren't we all doing model driven development yet ?

I am a true believer in Model Driven Development, I think it has the possibility to increase productivity, quality and predictability. When looking at MetaEdit the results are amazing. Mendix in the Netherlands is growing very very fast and has great results. I also know there are a lot of problems versioning of generators, templates and framework projects that just aren't right for model driven development (not enough repetition) higher risks (when the first project fails, you have less results than you would have with more traditional development) etc But still these problems seem solvable and the benefits should outweigh the effort needed. Question: What do you see as the biggest problems that make you not even consider model driven development ? I want to use these answers not just for my own understanding but also as a possible source for a series of internal articles I plan to write.

What is so bad about using SQL INNER JOIN

Everytime a database diagram gets looked out, one area people are critical of is inner joins. They look at them hard and has questions to see if an inner join really needs to be there. Simple Library Example: A many-to-many relationship is normally defined in SQL with three tables: Book, Category, BookCategory. In this situation, Category is a table that contains two columns: ID, CategoryName. In this situation, I have gotten questions about the Category table, is it need? Can it be used as a lookup table, and in the BookCategory table store the CategoryName instead of the CategoryID to stop from having to do an additional INNER JOIN. (For this question, we are going to ignore the changing, deleting of any CategoryNames) The question is, what is so bad about inner joins? At what point is doing them a negative thing (general guidelines like # of transactions, # of records, # of joins in a statement, etc)?

My note that this do not work on Ubuntu Touch Saucy + Nexus7 tablet was removed by fossfreedom. I do feel it duplicate also, but this moderator issue. There is no chance to response on equal topic, even when it is not obviously solving the problem. I do consider this confusing and causing incomplete answers.

Can I use CodeSynthesis XSD (C++/Tree mapping) together with a GPLv3-licensed library?

Is it possible to write an open source project that uses generated code from CodeSynthesis XSD (C++/Tree) and then link it to a third-party library that is licensed under the GPL version 3? Some background information: CodeSynthesis XSD is licensed under the GPL version 2 but with an extra FLOSS exception (http://www.codesynthesis.com/projects/xsd/FLOSSE). C++ source code generated from CodeSynthesis XSD (C++/Tree) needs to be linked against Xerces (http://xerces.apache.org/xerces-c/) that is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. Update I posted a similar question on the xsd-users mailing list two years ago but I didn't fully understand the answers. In that email thread, I wrote: I think it is the GPL version 3 software that doesn't allow itself be linked to software that can't be "relicensed" to GPL version 3 ( for instance GPL version 2 software ). That would also include XSD as the FLOSS exception doesn't give permission to "relicense" XSD to GPL version 3.

Can you over-normalize?

Should my URLs be lowercase?

According to this blog ("Understanding SEO Friendly URL Syntax Practices") I should change http://example.com/Hello-Dolly To http://example.com/hello-dolly The reasons given are: URLs, in general, are case-sensitive it will simplify any case sensitive SEO and analytics reports According to this GIF that I found on Wikipedia's article on URL Normalization I should convert my URLs from any uppercase to all lowercase. However I use ASP.NET MVC4 and by default my URLs are structured like this (CamelCase): http://www.domain.com/Controller/Action/Parameter http://www.greatsite.com/Categories/List/Bicycles I've skimmed through the RFC1738 but I didn't see any definitive answers to this. Should I go out of my way to force the framework to change everything to lower case? Why did Microsoft choose to design their framework like this if everybody is telling me to use lowercase?

If there's some specific book or web page that really captures your philosophy on constructing software with teams of programmers, please indicate it. EDIT: Please don't say, "I use a little of everything." without any more detail. If you haven't read any books or websites that have been helpful, now's your chance to enlighten the world by describing your experience-learned methodology. Python: Slicing a list into n nearly-equal-length partitions

I'm looking for a fast, clean, pythonic way to divide a list into exactly n nearly-equal partitions. partition([1,2,3,4,5],5)->[[1],[2],[3],[4],[5]] partition([1,2,3,4,5],2)->[[1,2],[3,4,5]] (or [[1,2,3],[4,5]]) partition([1,2,3,4,5],3)->[[1,2],[3,4],[5]] (there are other ways to slice this one too) There are several answers in here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1335392/iteration-over-list-slices that run very close to what I want, except they are focused on the size of the list, and I care about the number of the lists (some of them also pad with None). These are trivially converted, obviously, but I'm looking for a best practice. Similarly, people have pointed out great solutions here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/312443/how-do-you-split-a-list-into-evenly-sized-chunks-in-python for a very similar problem, but I'm more interested in the number of partitions than the specific size, as long as it's within 1. Again, this is trivially convertible, but I'm looking for a best practice.

What rules of etiquette should be followed at software conferences?

Whether as an attendee, a speaker, or a vendor I wanted to know what the unspoken rules of etiquette are at software conferences. Other than the blindingly obvious ones (like don't assault the winner of the iPad raffle because you didn't win). What are some of the rules that should be followed, even if you feel they don't need to be said? i.e. what t-shirts are acceptable (like from competing technologies or conferences), playing Wii at vendor booths at Microsoft sponsored conferences, cancelling sessions due to low (one hand) attendance, showering, 'Attendees of Size' spilling over into your seat, talking and eating during sessions or keynotes, etc. Please, one rule per answer, with the summary in bold leading the answer. Post multiple answers if you have multiple rules.
