  • How to ssh to my dorm computer with shared public IP and no admin rights over the router?

    First of all, I am not a Linux or ssh newbie. I have searched for this problem on many forums extensively but nobody seemed to have discussed this. Please help me! I live in a student dorm (off-campus) and all students of the dorm share the same WAN IP (Internet or public IP), which is fortunately static. I am not an admin and have no control over the router that assigns private IP's to all of the students, so I can't really forward port 22 to my computer :( Is it still possible to establish an ssh connection to my dorm computer from a computer on campus?

  • Secure data from a server to a workstation using jumper hosts

    Hello. I have a WWW-server, my problem is that the content is sensitive and should not be accessible for people without proper credentials. How can I improve the ease of use but still maintain security following scenario; The Server is accessed through a "jumper host", i.e. the client connects to the jumper using VPN-connection and uses RemoteDesktop to access the jumper. From the jumper he uses RemoteDesktop again to access the Server. Finally on the Server the user can access content using a WWW-browser. All the way from the VPN-client to the WWW-browser requires authentication using a SmartCard-token. This seems quite secure to me. Content only gets mirrored on the RemoteDesktop between Server and jumper, no cached files to worry about. Connection between jumper and client is protected using VPN(ssl), so no eavesdropping. But it is quite cumbersome for the clients with many steps and connections to open. :( So, how can I improve the user experience accessing my server without compromising security? Thanks.

  • Reverse proxy using hop and RDP

    I am trying to connect from Vista to XP using RDP via reverse proxy using putty and an intermidiate host. There are myriad articles on the internet how to do it using vnc, ssh servers, winsshd, etc, but I can't find anything that helps me in this specific case. What I have: Windows XP host behind the firewall - 'destination' linux host running ssh on the internet - 'intermediate' windows host behind the firewall - 'source' All I want to do is open reverse tunnel from destination to intermidiate and use this tunnel for connecting back from the source. That should be simple to setup, however I just cannot make it. This is what I do: On 'destination', open putty session, create tunnel to 'intermediate' using following settings: source port 3389, destination is 'source:33389', direction is local On 'source', open putty session, create tunnel to 'intermediate'using following settings: source port 33389, destination is 'destination:33389', direction is local Finally, on source, open termnal services client and connect it to localhost:33389.Unfortunately it seems like packets do go somewhere but eventually client times out. Am I totally misunderstanding the concept? Please help!

  • Win server 2008 change port of RD Gateway

    Is it possible to change the port used by RD Gateway. I know its integrated with IIS and it uses port 443 (SSL) so i've changed my IIS bindings to use a different port for SSL communications. however, I can't find any way to specify the RD gateway port in the RD client. Has anyone ever done this before? Reason I'm asking is, my ISP just recently blocked port 80 and 443 so I am forced to use another port.

  • What's an easy way to shut down a computer that I'm connected to via RDP

    I have a secondary machine on my local network that I usually use via RDP. Most of the time, it's on 24/7, but there are times when I may want to shut it down from the RDP client machine. The shutdown and restart options aren't available from the Windows XP start menu when you connect to a machine via RDP, so how can I shut this machine off without actually going to the physical machine? Also note that this computer currently doesn't have a monitor attached to it, which is partly why I want to be able to shut it down over RDP.

  • Cannot Connect To VMWare Guest OS Using Either RDP or VNC

    I have a PC (Windows XP SP3) with VMWare Workstation 7 installed. The VMWare hosts Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2. RealVNC (4.1.3) is installed on both OS'es. Both of them use Hamachi2. Host OS (WinXP) also runs ZoneAlarm Firewall. Hamachi network is set as trusted. My goal is to allow RDP and VNC connections to be made to the guest OS (Windows Server 2003). Both options work absolutely fine if I connect from the host OS. However I have problems when other computers from our Hamachi network try to connect the guest OS (Win2K3). RDP connections. RDP window opens, shows black content and after 15-20 seconds displays following error: RealVCN connections. Users are able to connect but all they see is a black screen inside VNC window. At the same their input (keystrokes or mouse moves/clicks) are visible when looking at the console window of the Win2K3. I really appreciate any ideas on how to resolve the mentioned problems.

  • Arch Linux: How to handle patches which only you will use?

    I'm using freerdp together with xmonad and it has been giving me a lot of trouble. The super key (or "windows key") is my mod key in xmonad and it has been interfering with my freerdp usage rather annoyingly. Whenever I switched workspaces (or did anything else in xmonad involving the super key), windows (controlled by the freerdp instance in focus) registered a keypress as well. This event combined with the loss of focus got the super key stuck in windows indefinitely: the press of the keys d and r would first show my desktop, then open the run dialog (as if I was pressing the windows key constantly). I've tried several versions of freerdp, but all exhibited this annoying behavior. So I resorted to patching freerdp myself to just ignore the left super key on my keyboard. I love free software for a lot of reasons (especially the ability to alter things like this myself), however I still find it annoying to patch and rebuild freerdp on all version (and dependency) changes. How do you deal with situations like this? Is there even a "right way" to resolve this issue?

I am trying to open an URL from a bash script to have it open in profile "test", like this: firefox -P "test" http://www.example.org/ However that opens it in profile "software" anyway. Any ideas?     I want to run some test on hardware level. My goal is to create or find a way to control one computer from another down to BIOS settings changing. For example: Master computer sends a signal for slave to restart and opens BIOS settings dialog. Master computer sends a signal to slave to change BIOS parameters and then restart. Then slave fully boots up master starts up some software on slave. Then software finishes operations cycle continues till certain conditions are met. I know that I am looking for a complex thing but mainly what I need are correct keywords because now I am being flooded by BIOS configurations tutorials. Main concerns: Is it possible without using any custom tailer chip? How can master monitor salve`s hardware activity? How to let master handled more than one slave? I have installed VNCServer using this guide line http://tournasdimitrios1.wordpress.com/2011/02/02/how-to-setup-vnc-server-on-centos-5-x-fedora-11/ Everything goes perfectly and server is running via termina. Now I am trying to connect to that server via vncviewer (mac os). but its giving me error Connection refused (61) I am providing only the IP address of the VPS, maybe I also needed port address? How to configure port on vncserver? or its something else?

    I am currently developing a mobile PHP project on localhost (or, to be more precise, a locally hosted website reachable at http://azgoth/) on my desktop computer and wish to check out how the design looks on my phone's various browsers, however, since the project's actually in my computer rather than the public net, I am unable to do so. Both my Desktop computer and smartphone connect to the internet via the same router, so I wondered, would it be possible to somehow make http://azgoth/ accessible to my smartphone in a similar way that my desktop computer accesses it, without making it public for everyone to see?   • RD Gateway reporting features/capabilities

    We have just implemented RD Gateway for our own department in preparation for a push to the whole agency for telecommuting. It is all setup and working great, but I was trying to figure out how best to go about monitoring/reporting of users. I see third party software out there that will do it, but is there anything built-in or via powershell/scripting that I could use that would give me a report of the daily activity of users? Something to say, "User A connected at this time, was on for this long, sent/received this much data"? Basically some of the same stuff you can see in event viewer. Ideally I'd like to be able to have this setup so that once a day it emails me with the daily usage for when a supervisor asks about if their person is actually working (or at least online sending and receiving x amount of data), I'll have some metrics to give them. I realize that actual work output is relevant and more of a managerial issue, but I would like to be able to offer as much as I can from my end when asked. Thoughts? Thanks!

  • Deleted printers keeps coming back - and multiply

    My users are on 2012 R2 RDS Session Host servers. I've used "Deploy Printers" (from Print Manager) to deploy 4 printers. The last week, I've had a lot of problems where users can't print. If I deleted the printer and added it again, they could print just fine. Now I've removed all printer deploying from GPO - and I have no printers in any login scripts. I did a gpupdate /force, but all the 4 printers are now listed 3 times... If I delete the printers and log off and back on, all the printers are popping up again. Sigh! This is driving me nuts. This script doesn't show any of the "SVFREJA" printers...     We're looking for a good office jukebox solution where staff can select songs via a web interface to be played over the central set of speakers. Must haves: Web Interface RSS / easy to scrap display of currently playing songs Ability to play mp3s and manage an ordered playlist. Good cataloguing of media. Multiple OSs supported as clients - Windows, Mac, Fedora Linux (will probably be accomplished by virtue of a web interface). We have tried XBMC which worked well as a proof of concept however the web interface is just too immature and has too many bugs for a reliable multi-user solution. I believe the same will be true of boxee. Nice to have: Ability to play music videos onto a monitor Ability to listen to radio streams specifically Shoutcast and the BBC. Ability to run on Linux is a nice to have but windows solutions which worked well would certainly be considered. I am aware of question 61404 and don't believe this to be a duplicate due to the specific requirements.

    I'm on a Windows 7 machine, attempting to use the command line to schedule a task on another Windows 7 machine in my company's network. I have administrative-level credentials for both computers. With help from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb736357.aspx I have created this line to run on the command prompt: schtasks /Create /S machinename /U username /P password /SC ONCE /TN Test1 /TR C:\Windows\System32\calc.exe /ST 16:30 Whenever I launch that, I get the following error: ERROR: User credentials are not allowed on the local machine. How can I fix this?

    Hi, Is it possible to grant a particular user sudo access for one particular command only? Thanks -- More info: We farm out lengthy optimisation runs to each other's boxes over ssh. These runs take hours, sometimes days. The shutdown command can only be run in sudo. Being conscious of my environmental footprint, I would like to give the initiator(s) of these runs sudo access to the shutdown command on my box, without sudo access for everything else - so that they may shutdown my machine when they no longer need it. I am aware that I can schedule a shutdown before I leave my box, but I am looking for a better solution.

  • How can I VPN into a domain and act as if it is local?

    I've looked and looked and the internet seems to have finally failed me, there's no information on my specific issue. I have two locations, and one server (sbs 2008); I need them to act like one physical LAN. I know it's possible, I just know how to set it up, or anything about VPNs, etc. So, just to clarify a bit more: 1 Small Business Server 2008 ~30 Computers with varying systems from Windows XP to 7 2 Physical Locations I use redirected folders, but since that would consume a lot of bandwith over VPN, I have a machine over there that can be the workhorse for storage. Users need to access e-mail and shared databases from this server (or possibly some form of DFS with aforementioned workhorse) from the other building. Is there a nice tutorial (or I nice person that wants to write it) online that can explain how to set up computers from an external network to act like they were in the LAN?

  • Can I find the session ID for a user logged on to another machine?

    I want to open an application on another computer on the same network via the command line. The scenario here is that the user is in a room surrounded by about 20 computers and wants to be able to launch the same app on every computer without walking from screen to screen opening it up on each individual machine. I've discovered that I can get the basic functionality for this using PsExec as follows: psexec \\[computer] -u [username] -p [password] -d -i [SessionID] [program] For computer, username, password, and program, I'm good. Does anyone know of a way I can figure out which SessionID is assigned to a particular user logged on to a particular machine on the network? Alternately, is there a better way to go about what I'm trying to accomplish?

  • Equivalent of phpMyAdmin for MSSQL?

    Is there any webinterface for administrating MSSQL similar to phpMyAdmin (for MySQL)? I want a self-service setup where developers can create a database through webinterface and upload/download backups of the database without local access. I've considered phpMSAdmin, but it hasn't had a release since 2006 so I'm not sure its worth the effort of setting it up. If there is something else (free or not-so-free) that would be great. My question is similar to this one posted 2 years ago, but no good webinterface was found back then. SQL Web Data Administrator seems interesting, but it lacks a few features - most notably creating new databases (also, not updated since 2007).
