  • App crashes only after second execution only in Release configuration

    Hey all, i know this is probably not an easy question to answer, as it's hard to describe on my hand. I have an app that runs without problems on the device in Debug Configuration (also multiple times). Once I put it into Release Configuration (which I need before publishing?), the app starts without problems and I can proceed to the next page, where I show an core-plot graph. BUT only if I run it from xcode. As soon as I end the App and start it again, it opens without problems, but on the next page, it crashes.   • Twitter API Voting System

    So I blatantly got this idea from the MIX 10 event. At MIX they held a rockband talent competition type thing (I’m not quite sure of all the details).    But the interesting part for me is how they collected votes. They used Twitter (what else, when you have a few thousand geeks available to you). I’ll post the code when finished that parses the returned XML.

  • Puppet: array in parameterized classes VS using resources

    I have some use cases where I want to define multiple similar resources that should end up in a single file (via a template). As an example I'm trying to write a puppet module that will let me manage the mapping between MAC addresses and network interface names (writing udev's persistent-net-rules file from puppet), but there are also many other similar usage cases. I searched around and found that it could be done with the new parameterised classes syntax: if implemented that way it should end up being used like this: node { "myserver.example.com": class { "network::iftab": interfaces => { "eth0" => { "mac" => "ab:cd:ef:98:76:54" } "eth1" => { "mac" => "98:76:de:ad:be:ef" } } } } Not too bad, I agree, but it would rapidly explode when you manage more complex stuff (think network configurations like in this module or any other multiple-complex-resources-in-a-single-config-file stuff). In a similar question on SF someone suggested using Pienaar's puppet-concat module but I doubt it could get any better than parameterised classes. What would be really cool and clean in the configuration definition would be something like the included host type, it's usage is simple, pretty and clean and naturally maps to multiple resources that will end up being configured in a single place. Transposed to my example it would be like: node { "myserver.example.com": interface { "eth0": "mac" => "ab:cd:ef:98:76:54", "foo" => "bar", "asd" => "lol", "eth1": "mac" => "98:76:de:ad:be:ef", "foo" => "rab", "asd" => "olo", } } ...that looks much better to my eyes, even with 3x options to each resource. Should I really be passing arrays to parameterised classes, or there is a better way to do this kind of stuff? Is there some accepted consensus in the puppet [users|developers] community? By the way, I'm referring to the latest stable release of the 2.7 branch and I am not interested in compatibility with older versions.

    I am on Ubuntu, Apache 2.2 Installed the fcgi via apt-get then removed it via apt-get remove. Installed mod-ruby configuration I added to Apache: LoadModule ruby_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_ruby.so RubyRequire apache/ruby-run <Directory /var/www> Options +ExecCGI </Directory> <Files *.rb> SetHandler ruby-object RubyHandler Apache::RubyRun.instance </Files> <Files *.rbx> SetHandler ruby-object RubyHandler Apache::RubyRun.instance </Files> I have a file in the www direcoty with puts 'baba' I have other files in that directory, all accessible via Apache. Test file has been chmod 777 In the browser I get 403.   • Sync desktop Mac environment to laptop

    I spend the majority of my time working at my desktop Mac, which I have configured for my web development environment. My spouse has a MacBook for casual use, and I occasionally steal it back when I need to work off-site, or when travelling. The question is how to best synchronize the two so I can switch between them more readily. I've solved a few obvious things by using online services: Email is hosted on IMAP. Working files are in Dropbox. Source code is managed in git. However, the following are things I always miss when jumping on the laptop: Installed Applications (current versions) Installed libraries & utilities (/usr/local) Apache VirtualHosts & other configurations (/etc) Disk image files for VMs My current method is to connect the MacBook via Firewire target mode and rsync the /Users/me home directory, and then cherry-pick the other items I need from Applications, /etc and /usr/local. The problem with this method is that it can be very time consuming due to things like my virtual machine image files, cached emails, etc. How can I make this faster & easier? Can you recommend a solution for configuration management (so I can repeatably install & configure the same software on both), or synchronization (so I can bring the MacBook up to date nightly, over our home network)?

  • Recompiling Nginx 1.4.3 with "--with-http_gzip_static_module" error

    I'm trying to enable the 'ngx_http_gzip_static_module' module in Nginx 1.4.3 by adding the --with-http_gzip_static_module to my ./configure configuration.   • Apache2 MPM-prefork MPM-worker multiple instances on same Ubuntu host machine possible?

    I have a live Apache2/MPM-Worker instance running Django. I want to also run an Apache2/MPM-prefork instance to run some Drupal6 applications on the same host machine and utilize a vast selection of PHP modules that run on the prefork model. I plan to use my MPM-worker instance to reverse proxy to the Apache2-prefork instance for URLS starting with myhost.com/drupal6/. It seems theoretically doable/configurable by having the second Apache2-prefork instance configured to listen on an internal port, say 127.0.0.1:8080 and having my current Apache2-worker configured to proxy pass and reverse pass to it for the 'drupal6' URLs. However, how do I compile or install the apache2-prefork version so it has a different executable name than /usr/sbin/apache2, for example /usr/sbin/apache2p, and so apache2ctl has a different name, say apache2pctl, and that apache2pctl invokes the /usr/sbin/apache2p instead of /usr/sbin/apache2... and so on down the line (eg /etc/apache2p) so I can start and restart my two instances independently? As I understand it, no one executable of 'apache2' can be compiled with both the MPM-prefork and MPM-worker modules, so it seems I need two separate versions of the apache2 MPM flavors. But then I need to invoke and control them by separate names, I assume. I looked at the configuration options for apache2 and I am a bit queasy about compiling a second apache2 version with prefork because I am not sure I can set all the options so that none of my current apache2 files is overwritten. Is there a way? Is there a standard solution to separately installing and controlling prefork and worker apache2 executables on the same machine without them stepping on each other during installation or operation?

  • How to change System default language on GNOME3?

    I just installed GNOME3 on my Ubuntu. Everything worked fine till I restarted computer. Then I received a message if I want to change folders name to some other (different language, don't know what is this, but looks like Chinese). I pressed, 'keep old names' but it still changed all my folder names! And also the rest of the names. (like settings, and all that staff). So if you can give me the direction on where to click (cause all English names changed to non-English) and I simply don't know what does any of them means!

  • Stuck removing ffmpeg from system due to package problems

    I'd be very grateful to get a bit of support on the following situation: Using Ubuntu 12.04, and I used the PPA of Jon Severinson for ffmpeg. I had a problem playing movies with mplayer, so I decided to remove the PPA and try to use libav only after I read this article about libav vs ffmpeg. I first removed the PPA from the list, then apt-get update, etc. But I couldn't remove ffmpeg due to dependency-errors and got stuck in what seemed some kind of loop. Then I found a suggestion here. I followed the steps, and ended up force-removing libavcodec-extra-53. Because, apparently that was "what got stuff moving again". At the moment I can't. Now Ubuntu is reporting a broken package (BrokenCount 0).     hi, just got a macbook pro 15" so i'm unfamiliar with how the filesystem is laid out. i noticed when in my filesystem that i've got a few paths specifying httpd.conf /etc/apache2/httpd.conf /opt/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf the confs are different in lots of ways-- e.g. user, group, server_root, modules that are loaded, etc. the apache2 folders themselves also greatly differ. it seems that the one getting used is either /etc/apache2/httpd.conf or /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf i'm wondering if i might have messed up my system after installing some packages (php5, django, etc) via macports and maybe ended up with 2 apache2 instances. my questions are hence: - which httpd.conf is the one being used ? - what are the other files for? thanks

  • How can a Linux Administrator improve their shell scripting and automation skills?

    In my organization, I work with a group of NOC staff, budding junior engineers and a handful of senior engineers; all with a focus on Linux. One interesting step in the way the company grows talent is that there's a path from the NOC to the senior engineering ranks. Viewing the talent pool as a relative newcomer, I see that there's a split in the skill sets that tends to grow over time... There are engineers who know one or several particular technologies well and are constantly immersed... e.g. MySQL, firewalls, SAN storage, load balancers... There are others who are generalists and can navigate multiple technologies. All learn enough Linux (commands, processes) to do what they need and use on a daily basis. A differentiating factor between some of the staff is how well they embrace scripting, automation and configuration management methodologies. For instance, we have two engineers who do the bulk of Amazon AWS CloudFormation work, and another who handles most of the Puppet infrastructure. Perhaps a quarter of the engineers are adept at BASH shell scripting. Looking at this in the context of the incredibly high demand for DevOps skills in the job market, I'm curious how other organizations foster the development of these skills and grow their internal talent. Scripting doesn't seem like a particularly-teachable concept. How does a sysadmin improve their shell scripting? Is there still a place for engineers who do not/cannot keep up in the DevOps paradigm? Are we simply to assume that some people will be left behind as these technologies evolve? Is that okay?

  • SSIS package not picking up configuration files correctly

    We have recently migrated some 30 DTS packages in SQL Server 2000 to SSIS packages in SQL Server 2008. We have created packages in such a way that all environment related variables and other required information are picked from configuration files for maintenance of packages across different environments like Dev, QA and Prod. After setting up all the packages with the config files, when we tested the packages from Business Intelligence Development Studio, it worked fine and picked up the values from the configuration file. And when changing the values in config files to Dev or other env it correctly picked up the values and executed. Similarly, tried for 2 different environments and the packages worked fine. So we deployed to Prod and it was working fine. Yesterday, I had to make a functional change for one package and so I made the change in the package (it is just changing a parameter in a SQL procedure execution task and not related to any variables) and tested in BIDS with 2 environments and it worked fine. As the change was not related to any environment change, we deployed only the updated package (not the associated config file) manually in Prod (i.e without the use of manifest). The config file which was used by the package previously and working fine in Prod remained unaltered. But when the package was executed, the package was pointing to QA and the package didn't read from the config file I believe. One reason may be, it is still using the last executed values which remains in the .dtsx file(can be checked by opening the file in a text editor) usually. But normally, when a package is executed, the values will be overwritten from config file. Guess it is not happening. What are the possible reasons for this? We have tested extensively switching between test environments and it does not show this behavior. We have encountered this in Prod environment twice now. Anyone else have experienced this and how have you resolved this?

For example, suppose that a house rental should only be available during a specific time. The thing is, it would have to be flexible enough to encompass a wide variety of rules: avoiding duplicates/overlaps (to continue the example "You already have a reservation for this time/location") logic rules ("You can't rent a house to yourself", "This house is in a different place from your chosen destination") sanity tests ("You've set a rental price that's 10x the normal rate. Are you sure this is the right price?" Things like that. Before I recreate the wheel, I'm wondering if there are already methods out there for doing something like this.

  • Installing Forms and Reports on a development system

    By popular demand I've resurrected / updated one of the old blog postings from Jan Carlin's Blog on GroundSide here. A recent (lengthy) post on the Forms forums chronicles the problems some of you have had installing F&R on a development machine. See the link in the headline of this post for the main one. When installing, here are some points to bear in mind: Download and install Weblogic Server first. http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/middleware/index.htmlFind the Forms and Reports (and Disco and Portal) zip files here. Download them to the desktop (or some other temporary directory of your choosing). Unzip both of the two zip files into the same new directory (maybe called 'stage') and check that you have 4 directories in the stage dir when you are finished unzipping: 'Disk1', 'Disk2', 'Disk3' and 'Disk4'. These folders are specified in the zip file structure and must be preserved for the setup executable to work. If you use WinZip and have a right click menu option that say "Extract to here", use that by right click-dragging the zip file onto the newly created directory. Don't use the "Extract to folder %HOME%\Desktop\ofm_pfrd...disk_1of2" option. That will get you into the trouble that was reported early in this thread. Free up as much memory as you can. Stop services and background processes and virus scanners and databases (you don't need a DB to install Forms) and other things lurking about on your machine. You can restart them when the install is done. Around 1.5 GB free real memory should do it. If it doesn't, free up more if you can. Don't change the swap space unless you know what you are doing. Let Windows handle it. A 1 GB machine will likely not be enough. You will likely need at least 2GB of RAM.Start the install with setup.exe from the 'Disk1' directoryChoose the Install and Configure option unless you have a good reason not to.Choose a unique instance name even if you deinstalled and removed the last install. I suggest using 'asinst_20090722_1' (today's date in ISO format with a running incremented number at the end if you install more than two times on a particular day).Unselect Portal and Discoverer and select the Builders you want.Unselect WebCacheUnselect OHS.Unselect the single sign-on option Check for any failures and choose the retry option if any occur. If that doesn't fix the problem, call Oracle Customer Support .
