  • Correct level of abstraction for a 3d rendering component?

    I've seen lots of questions around this area but not this exact question so apologies if this is a duplicate. I'm making a small 3d game. Well to be honest, it's just a little hobby project and likely won't turn out to be an actual game, I'll be happy to make a nice graphics demo and learn about 3d rendering and c++ design. My intent is to use direct3d9 for rendering as I have some little experience of it, and it seems to meet my requirements. However if I've learned one thing as a programmer it's to ask "is there any conceivable reason that this component might be replaced by a different implmentation" and if the answer is yes then I need to design a proper abstraction and interface to that component. So even though I intend to implment d3d9 I need to design a 3d interface that could be implemented for d3d11, opengl... My question then is what level is it best to do this at? I'm thinking that an interface capable of creating and later drawing Vertex buffers and index buffers Textures Vertex and Pixel "shaders" Some representation of drawing state (blending modes etc...) In other words a fairly low level interface where my code to draw for example an animated model would use the interface to obtain abstract vertex buffers etc. I worry though that it's too low level to abstract out all the functionallity I need efficiently. The alternative is to do this at a higher level where the interface can draw objects, animations, landscapes etc, and implement them for each system. This seems like more work, but it more flexible I guess. So that's my question really, when abstracting out the drawing system, what level of interface works best?

  • An alternative to multiple inheritance when creating an abstraction layer?

    In my project I am creating an abstraction layer for some APIs. The purpose of the layer is to make multi-platform easier, and also to simplify the APIs to the feature set that I need while also providing some functionality, the implementation of which will be unique to each platform. At the moment, I have implemented it by defining and abstract class, which has methods which creates objects that implement interfaces. The abstract class and these interfaces define the capabilities of my abstraction layer. The implementation of these in my layer should of course be arbitrary from the POV view of my application, but I have done it, for my first API, by creating chains of subclasses which add more specific functionality as the features of the APIs they expose become less generic. The thing is though, I don't like using interfaces for this; it seems wrong, in my mind an interface defines a contract, any class that implements that interface should be able to be used where that interface is used but here that is clearly not the case because the interfaces are being used to allow an object from the layer to masquerade as something else, without the application needing to have access to its definition. What technique would allow me to define a comprehensive, intuitive collection of objects for an abstraction layer, while their implementation remains independent? (Language is C#)

  • JUDCon 2013 Trip Report

    JUDCon (JBoss Users and Developers Conference) 2013 was held in historic Boston on June 9-11 at the Hynes Convention Center. JUDCon is the largest get together for the JBoss community, has gone global in recent years but has it's roots in Boston. The JBoss folks graciously accepted a Java EE 7 talk from me and actually referenced my talk in their own sessions. I am proud to say this is my third time speaking at JUDCon/the Red Hat Summit over the years (this was the first time on behalf of Oracle). I had great company with many of the rock stars of the JBoss ecosystem speaking such as Lincoln Baxter, Jay Balunas, Gavin King, Mark Proctor, Andrew Lee Rubinger, Emmanuel Bernard and Pete Muir. Notably missing from JUDCon were Bill Burke, Burr Sutter, Aslak Knutsen and Dan Allen. Topics included Java EE, Forge, Arquillian, AeroGear, OpenShift, WildFly, Errai/GWT, NoSQL, Drools, jBPM, OpenJDK, Apache Camel and JBoss Tools/Eclipse. My session titled "JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond" went very well and it was a full house. This is our main talk covering the changes in JMS 2, the Java API for WebSocket (JSR 356), the Java API for JSON Processing (JSON-P), JAX-RS 2, JPA 2.1, JTA 1.2, JSF 2.2, Java Batch, Bean Validation 1.1, Java EE Concurrency and the rest of the APIs in Java EE 7. I also briefly talked about the possibilities for Java EE 8. The slides for the talk are here: JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond from reza_rahman Besides presenting my talk, it was great to catch up with the JBoss gang and attend a few interesting sessions. On Sunday night I went to one of my favorite hangouts in Boston - the exalted Middle East Club as Rolling Stone refers to it (other cool spots in an otherwise pretty boring town is "the Church"). As contradictory as it might sound to the uninitiated, the Middle East Club is possibly the best place in Boston to simultaneously get great Middle Eastern (primarily Lebanese) food and great underground metal. For folks with a bit more exposure, this is probably not contradictory at all given bands like Acrassicauda and documentaries like Heavy Metal in Baghdad. Luckily for me they were featuring a few local Thrash metal bands from the greater Boston area. It wasn't too bad considering it was primarily amateur twenty-something guys (although I'm not sure I'm a qualified critic any more since I all but stopped playing about at that age). It's great Boston has the Middle East as an incubator to keep the rock, metal, folk, jazz, blues and indie scene alive. I definitely enjoyed JUDCon/Boston and hope to be part of the conference next year again.

  • Problem with launching JAGUAR in R

    Windows XP, R 2.11.1, Java JRE6 I just installed the Jaguar package.   • Service injection into Controller (Spring MVC)

    Hi I have a Spring web application, I have built it up to the controller stage and I could inject my Daos, into my Services fine. Now when I want to inject my Service into my controller i get an error for dependency with the Dao and further down the sessionFactory. I don't want to inject these again cause this will ultimately lead me to eventually create a data source but I have my Daos for data access and they already know about sessionFactory.     I have written an NPAPI browser plug-in (using Firebreath) that Unity uses to access Kinect camera. I can retrieve skeleton data from Unity through JavaScript easily since it isn't too big but the problem is in retrieving color image data. Is it possible to send a native texture pointer (GetNativeTexturePtr) from Unity through JavaScript into the C++ plug-in so that it can write the texture data directly? (tested in standalone version and it works) Any other suggestions on how to transfer image data from browser plug-ins to Unity web player are very welcome. Thanks.

    I have always wanted to learn a foreign language, but I would like to pick one that can also help me the most in my career. I'm in the US, so it is not necessary for me to learn a second language to influence my career success, however I think knowing one and speaking it fluently could potentially put me in a more interesting career than if I did not. I would like to be able to travel the world, especially if I could have a reason to go one place or another. Which leads me to my question: What is the best second language to learn for a native English speaking programmer? (Especially from the US) Some ideas that come to mind for me are Mandarin, German, Japanese, French... I am looking for experienced opinions though! Thanks.

  • Mac-native text editor that can syntax-highlight diff files?

    I do something like "svn diff /mystuff/current.diff". I want to view this .diff file with syntax highlighting. jEdit does it, but it's a huge beast and it takes a while to start up. I want something lightweight/native. Smultron/Fraise, TextWrangler, TextEdit, Dashcode don't seem to highlight .diff files. FileMerge seems to want to generate diff files, not show you existing ones. TextMate does the trick, but it's not free. I'd feel happier dropping $50 US if I was going to take advantage of it for anything more than a diff viewer. Are there any alternatives to jEdit or TextMate that I should consider?

  • Configuring CESoPSN using Cisco MWR 2941

    I'm trying to configure CESoPSN on two Cisco MWR 2941 routers, but the alarm LED lights are always lit. My configuration is modeled after this sample configuration. My setup is as follows: On the Cisco MWRs, E1 0/5 is configured to be CESoPSN, E1 0/9 is configured to be CESoPSN (CAS mode), and E1 0/7 is configured to be SAToP. The two MWRs are connected to each other via the GigabitEthernet port 0/2. The GigE ports are configured as a vlan because the ports are L2 ports and cannot be assigned an IP address directly. The two Cisco MWRs are connected to a traffic simulator, i.e. the traffic simulator will play out E1 traffic to MWR 1 and record the output traffic from MWR 2. On my traffic simulator, when it's connected to the E1 ports 0/5 and 0/9 (both CESoPSN configurations), the "Remote" alarm is on. However, when connected to the E1 ports 0/7 (SAToP configuration), no alarms were on. The GigE connection seems to be working fine (both LED lights on the 2 ports are green). The SAToP configuration seems to be fine too (Left LED is green, right LED is off on both E1 0/7 ports). However, both CESoPSN configurations seem to be not working (Left LED is green, right LED is yellow on both E1 0/5 and 0/9 ports). I don't know if there's anything wrong with my configuration for the CESoPSN, as I'm very new to this.   • A different interface for the Sql Server Reporting Service?

    I have a SQL Server 2005 SQL Reporting Services implementation. It seems that the only way to actually access the reports is for the users to use Internet Explorer. The web page uses an ActiveX control to do its printing (and probably other functions as well). Does SSRS have a different way to access its functionality via the web browser? Like maybe Java or HTML based? If so, how do I actually turn it on? The reason I am asking is because the security is being tightened and ActiveX controls will be banished, thus the users won't be able to print.

  • Inbound SIP calls through Cisco 881 NAT hang up after a few seconds

    I've recently moved to a Cisco 881 router for my WAN link. I was previously using a Cisco Linksys WAG320N as my modem/router/WiFi AP/NAT firewall. The WAG320N is now running in bridged mode, so it's simply acting as a modem with one of it's LAN ports connected to FE4 WAN on my Cisco 881. The Cisco 881 get's a DHCP provided IP from my ISP. My LAN is part of default Vlan 1 (192.168.1.0/24). General internet connectivity is working great, I've managed to setup static NAT rules for my HTTP/HTTPS/SMTP/etc. services which are running on my LAN. I don't know whether it's worth mentioning that I've opted to use NVI NAT (ip nat enable as opposed to the traditional ip nat outside/ip nat inside) setup. My reason for this is that NVI allows NAT loopback from my LAN to the WAN IP and back in to the necessary server on the LAN. I run an Asterisk 1.8 PBX on my LAN, which connects to a SIP provider on the internet. Both inbound and outbound calls through the old setup (WAG320N providing routing/NAT) worked fine. However, since moving to the Cisco 881, inbound calls drop after around 10 seconds, whereas outbound calls work fine. The following message is logged on my Asterisk PBX: [Dec 9 15:27:45] WARNING[27734]: chan_sip.c:3641 retrans_pkt: Retransmission timeout reached on transmission [email protected] for seqno 1 (Critical Response) -- See https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions Packet timed out after 6528ms with no response [Dec 9 15:27:45] WARNING[27734]: chan_sip.c:3670 retrans_pkt: Hanging up call [email protected] - no reply to our critical packet (see https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions). (I know that this is quite a common issue - I've spend the best part of 2 days solid on this, trawling Google.) I've done as I am told and checked https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions. Referring to the section "Other SIP requests" in the page linked above, I believe that the hangup to be caused by the ACK from my SIP provider not being passed back through NAT to Asterisk on my PBX. I tried to ascertain this by dumping the packets on my WAN interface on the 881. I managed to obtain a PCAP dump of packets in/out of my WAN interface. Here's an example of an ACK being reveived by the router from my provider: 689 21.219999 193.x.x.x 188.x.x.x SIP 502 Request: ACK sip:[email protected] | However a SIP trace on the Asterisk server show's that there are no ACK's received in response to the 200 OK from my PBX: http://pastebin.com/wwHpLPPz In the past, I have been strongly advised to disable any sort of SIP ALGs on routers and/or firewalls and the many posts regarding this issue on the internet seem to support this. However, I believe on Cisco IOS, the config command to disable SIP ALG is no ip nat service sip udp port 5060 however, this doesn't appear to help the situation. To confirm that config setting is set: Router1#show running-config | include sip no ip nat service sip udp port 5060 Another interesting twist: for a short period of time, I tried another provider. Luckily, my trial account with them is still available, so I reverted my Asterisk config back to the revision before I integrated with my current provider. I then dialled in to the DDI associated with the trial trunk and the call didn't get hung up and I didn't get the error above! To me, this points at the provider, however I know, like all providers do, will say "There's no issues with our SIP proxies - it's your firewall." I'm tempted to agree with this, as this issue was not apparent with the old WAG320N router when it was doing the NAT'ing. I'm sure you'll want to see my running-config too: ! !   • How can I setup apache+mod_proxy so when I connect to mod_proxy on interface X, it sends the traffic

    We use a service that allots us X number of requests per IP and has allows us to setup 5 IPs with such a limit (I know.. it seems stupid they could not just up the limit 5x on one IP). Pretend I have a linux box with the following address on the internet: 66.249.90.104 - that is an Google IP and not mine... so feel free to try to hack into it :) I setup apache+mod_proxy as a forwarding proxy (ProxyRequests On). i.e. you can setup firefox to use 66.249.90.104:8080 as a proxy, and all firefox traffic comes out as 66.249.90.104. So far so good. Problem: Now I add more alias interfaces so the total looks like this: eth0: 66.249.90.104 eth0:1 66.249.90.105 eth0:2 66.249.90.106 eth0:3 66.249.90.107 eth0:4 66.249.90.108 I run apache+mod_proxy (single apache instance) which binds to all interfaces, but no matter which address I connect to use the forwarding proxy, all traffic goes out to the internet as 66.249.90.104 I have also tried running 5 different apaches, each binding to its own interface only, but that still sends the outbound request through 66.249.90.104. I was hoping to get it to work as follows: I connect to 66.249.90.108 and make a proxy request, and it goes out as 66.249.90.108. I connect to 66.249.90.107 and make a proxy request, and it goes out as 66.249.90.107. etc. Has anyone else had to deal with this issue? The fall back solution would be to just run apache on 5 separate boxes, but I would prefer it to all work on one box. Thanks!

    INTERNET<->(wan)BRIDGED_DEVICE(lan)<->ETH_ROUTER<->LAN Problem: Need to access web server on BRIDGED_DEVICE's LAN from INTERNET via ROUTER (BRIDGED_DEVICE's web server cannot be accessed form INTERNET since it has no Public management IP). Cannot configure bridged device. It has a static IP on its LAN to which its web server binds. Attempt: Create a secondary/alias WAN Interface on ETH_ROUTER (e.g Primary: eth0.1 (for internet access) and Secondary: eth0.2 (for accessing web server on BRIDGED_DEVICE), (No VLANs). eth0.1 has a public IP; eth0.2 has a static private IP in the BRIDGED_DEVICE's subnet (e.g 10.0.X.Y). Iptables on ETH_ROUTER: Added a port forward (DNAT) from eth0.1 to eth0.2: iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -i eth0.1 -p tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.0.X.Y iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTING -o eth0.2 -s 10.0.X.0/24 -j MASQUERADE Stateful firewall w/ overall drop policy on FORWARD chain, hence: iptables -I FORWARD -i eth0.1 -d 10.0.X.Y -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT Can ping from ETH_ROUTER to BRIDGED_DEVICE but unable to reach the web server from Internet. I see packet cont increasing for the DNAT rule but not sure where it disappears in the ETH_ROUTER after that. ETH_ROUTER is the only device that can be configured to achieve this. If familiar with this scenario, please suggest what I may be missing or doing wrong here or suggest techniques to debug?

  • Is it possible to command a common router without using the web interface?

    Some background The internet arrangement in my student home is really weird. There is one ethernet outlet and several wifi hotspots. Either way requires a login through a web site to get internet access. This is annoying as each device needs to login seperately and with a PS3 for example, it is impossible to get connected at all since the web login procedure doesn't work. Therefore I have installed a D-Link DIR-635 router which is connected to the ethernet outlet. It has DHCP enabled so it uses NAT, but whatever it is connected to also uses NAT and I've read this should not work. A fellow student tried it with an Apple Airport but that keeps giving errors related to NAT after NAT. Anyway my setup does work so bonus points if you can clarify this. I need to login to the web site I mentioned earlier with any device, after which all devices in my LAN have connectivity. This is great. Except... In short From time to time, I lose internet connectivity and my D-Link DIR-635 router needs to do a DHCP renew. I can do this via the web interface but my life would be easier if I could just run a cmd file which tells my router to do this without all the hassle. This would setup a connection to my router and execute the proper command. I have tried googling but couldn't find much helpful stuff.
