• recommendations for a lightweight linux distribution for a test server

  I'm planning on setting up a test server to experiment with some application servers (tomcat/jboss/...) and with some portals. Now the machine I've set aside for this is lightweight CPU/GPU wise(Atom D510, 4 gigabyte ram, 500 GiB hdd, onboard GPU). But it should suffice for most things, I'm more interested in the stability of JBoss/Tomcat for my purposes than the stability. However I'm having a bit of trouble picking an appropriate distribution size/performance/setup time wise/security wise since it seems I can't sneeze without another distribution popping up. I've been thinking about going for Fedora since I've read that that distribution has been optimized for Atom, but I'm not really familiar with it. My experience with Linux has mostly been limited to Ubuntu and some tinkering with puppylinux. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty using the command line. I'm not planning on starting a discussion per se, mostly the pros/cons that people have encountered with some distributions

• Is there a way for me to test my [closed]

  I have a home network with a cheap-o little router with a development server and a few devices hooked up to it. I am finding that backups of my server are taking FOREVER (a week for 60gb) running backups renders my internet connection useless from any other box int he house. I have maxed out the pipe to my house from the ISP (10down, 3up), but is there a way for me to test and see if my router is bottlenecking anything? I feel like 60gb backups shouldn't take this long so any help would be great!

• How to test which button is stuck

  My laptop's keyboard is prone to buttons sticking. The fix is to just press the same button again. Now when it is the letter/number keys are stuck, it's just a matter of putting the cursor in a text field, and seeing what characters appear. However, when it is one of the modifier keys, or tab, or enter or a few other buttons, it gets harder to tell which key is to blame. Trying to type can result in all sort of shortcuts being triggered. Is there anyway to test what input is being recieved? Also, I'm guessing this is a hardware issue, but if anyone knows of any possible causes/solutions it'd be appreciated. It's a Dell Studio 17, and the problem occurs under Windows and Linux.

  Occasionally I want to cd into a directory where my user does not have permission, so I resort to sudo. The obvious command sudo cd somedir doesn't work: $ sudo mkdir test $ sudo chmod go-rxw test $ ls -l drwx------ 2 root root [...snip...] test $ cd test -bash: cd: test: Permission denied $ sudo cd test sudo: cd: command not found Using sudo su works: $ sudo su # cd test Is it possible to make this into a one-liner? (Not a big deal, just idle curiosity :) The variations I tried didn't work: $ sudo "cd test" sudo: cd: command not found $ sudo -i cd test -bash: line 0: cd: test: No such file or directory $ sudo -s cd test The last one doesn't give an error, but it cd's within a new shell that exits by the end of the line, so it doesn't actually take me anywhere. Can someone enlighten me as to why this happens? Why is sudo cd not found, when for example sudo ls ... works fine?

• help with making a password checker in java

  Hello, I am trying to make a program in Java that checks for three specific inputs. It has to be 1. At least 7 characters. 2. Contain both upper and lower case alphabetic characters. 3. Contain at least 1 digit. So far I have been able to make it check if there is 7 characters, but I am having trouble with the last two. What should I put in my loop as an if statement to check for digits and make it upper and lower case. Any help would be greatly appreciated.   I'm writing some code which could really do with some simple compile time metaprogramming. It is common practise to use empty-struct tags as compile time symbols. I need to decorate the tags with some run-time config elements. static variables seem the only way to go (to enable meta-programming), however static variables require global declarations. to side step this Scott Myers suggestion (from the third edition of Effective C++), about sequencing the initialization of static variables by declaring them inside a function instead of as class variables, came to mind. So I came up with the following code, my hypothesis is that it will let me have a compile-time symbols with string literals use-able at runtime.   I recently encountered an idiom I haven't seen before: string assembly by StringWriter and PrintWriter. I mean, I know how to use them, but I've always used StringBuilder. Is there a concrete reason for preferring one over the other? The StringBuilder method seems much more natural to me, but is it just style? I've looked at several questions here (including this one which comes closest: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/602279/stringwriter-or-stringbuilder ), but none in which the answers actually address the question of whether there's a reason to prefer one over the other for simple string assembly.   I was trying to follow this tutorial in order to create my own restful web-service using Spring framework.   The Scenario I have written a Silverlight 3 Application that uses an SQL Server database. I'm moving the application onto the Cloud (Azure Platform). In order to do this I have had to setup my database on SQL Azure. I am using the ADO.Net Entity Framework to model my database. I have got the application running on the cloud, but I cannot get it to connect to the database. Below is the original localhost connection string, followed by the SQL Azure connection string that isn't working. The application itself runs fine, but fails when trying to retrieve data. • Convert InputStream to String with encoding given in stream data

  Hi, My input is a InputStream which contains an XML document. Encoding used in XML is unknown and it is defined in the first line of XML document. From this InputStream, I want to have all document in a String. To do this, I use a BufferedInputStream to mark the beginning of the file and start reading first line. I read this first line to get encoding and then I use an InputStreamReader to generate a String with the correct encoding. It seems that it is not the best way to achieve this goal because it produces an OutOfMemory error. • maven test cannot load cross-module resources/properties ?

  I have a maven mantained project with some modules . One module contains one XML file and one parsing class. Second module depends on the first module. There is a class that calls the parsing class in the first module , but maven seems cannot test the class in the second module. Maven test reports : java.lang.NullPointerException at java.util.Properties.loadFromXML(Properties.java:851) at foo.firstModule.Parser.<init>(Parser.java:92) at foo.secondModule.Program.<init>(Program.java:84) In "Parser.java" (in the first module) , it uses Properties and InputStream to read/parse an XML file : InputStream xmlStream = getClass().getResourceAsStream("Data.xml"); Properties properties = new Properties(); properties.loadFromXML(xmlStream); The "data.xml" is located in first module's resources/foo/firstModule directory , and it tests OK in the first module. It seems when testing the second module , maven cannot correctly load the Data.xml in the first module . I thought I can solve the problem by using maven-dependency-plugin:unpack to solve it .   I have built a parser in Sprache and C# for files using a format I don't control. Using it I can correctly convert: a = "my string"; into my string The parser (for the quoted text only) currently looks like this: public static readonly Parser<string> QuotedText = from open in Parse.Char('"').Token() from content in Parse.CharExcept('"').Many().Text().Token() from close in Parse.Char('"').Token() select content; However the format I'm working with escapes quotation marks using "double doubles" quotes, e.g.: a = "a ""string""."; When attempting to parse this nothing is returned. It should return: a ""string"". Additionally a = ""; should be parsed into a string.Empty or similar. I've tried regexes unsuccessfully based on answers like this doing things like "(?:[^;])*", or: public static readonly Parser<string> QuotedText = from content in Parse.Regex("""(?:[^;])*""").Token() This doesn't work (i.e. no matches are returned in the above cases).   In need of shell scripts / bash commands to verify data integrity of local harddrives, usb-drives, etc, ... Like the famous www.heise.de/download/h2testw; or something that is at least common within repositories. (h2testw writes a specific datastring over and over onto the medium, then reads it again to verify if it was written correctly and displays write/read time/speed.) please no dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sdx bs=1k && dd if=/dev/sdx of=/dev/null bs=1k since it won't verify if everything was written correctly. It is only a test if read/write is successful to the device. So far, I'm not too happy with badblocks -w -v /dev/sdx1 either, since it seems rather slow and I don't know what it exactly writes, and if it considers wear-leveling on flash media. There is also a program named F3 http://oss.digirati.com.br/f3/ that needs to be compiled. Designed after h2testw, the concept sounds interesting, i'd just rather have it as a ready to go bash script.

• Test whether svn REPO changes are reflected in Working Copy

  Requirement Changes will be made to the REPO directory and this should get updated to wc(working copy) as opposed to the normal way of WC REPO. Senario: My svn repo- /var/www/svn/drupal My checkout-dir/working-copy- /var/www/html/drupalsite So I've done: edited post-commit hook to contain: "/usr/bin/svn update /var/www/html/drupalsite" I won't make any change to svn WC. I'll make changes to svn REPO- /var/www/svn/drupal. After changes are made to svn repo, run "svn commit /var/www/html/drupalsite". This will trigger the post-commit hook. This inturn will run "svn update /var/www/svn/drupal" and thus my WC will get updated with the changes of REPO. Query a. Would the above steps 1-3 help achieve my 'Requirement'? b. I'd need advise on how to test if the above setup works successfully or not. I'm at loss about the success of steps 1-3 the reason why query(a) is present. This is a bit more of a concern for me. NB: I'm new to subversion. Whatever I've configured till now have been done by reading articles online. Reason for query (b) is because I'm not into development. It seems to be a php drupal website and I happen to be setting it up. So I'm not aware as to how to make a "PROPER" change in REPO so that it gets reflected in WC. If reflected, my configs are right and the team can start on development. I manually put a random file/folder into REPO dir for seeing a change in WC and ran steps 1-3 but was of no avail and later on learned that it was NOT the way to make a change to a REPO.
