  • Regular Expression for accurate word-count using JavaScript

    I'm trying to put together a regular expression for a JavaScript command that accurately counts the number of words in a textarea. One solution I had found is as follows: document.querySelector("#wordcount").innerHTML = document.querySelector("#editor").value.split(/\b\w+\b/).length -1; But this doesn't count any non-Latin characters (eg: Cyrillic, Hangul, etc); it skips over them completely. Another one I put together: document.querySelector("#wordcount").innerHTML = document.querySelector("#editor").value.split(/\s+/g).length -1; But this doesn't count accurately unless the document ends in a space character. If a space character is appended to the value being counted it counts 1 word even with an empty document. Furthermore, if the document begins with a space character an extraneous word is counted. Is there a regular expression I can put into this command that counts the words accurately, regardless of input method?

  • Using UIImageViews for 'pages' in an iPhone/iPad storybook app?

    I'm new to iPhone programming, and well, what seems obvious to me may seem silly to a seasoned coder. I did a few 'switching views' tutorials on Youtube, and basically, they seems to work nicely for adding pages to a storybook type app. You add a UIViewController and associated view for each page. My question is would this become insanely slow, or a memory hog if I continued this method for say....35+ pages? Each page would also have a sound file associated with it that would play narration when a page load and stops when we leave. Basically, think of a powerpoint type app, with sound, possibly animated image elements, next & back buttons. I'm probably thinking of this very simplistically, but that's where my experience is at for the moment. Any insight or tips as to better and or more efficient ways to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to create a reusable form using COCOA bindings.

    hi. I want to make a user interface in which the user can edit two objects at the same time. The main window would have a vertical split view and a form on each side of the view. The problem is that the two forms are identical and I don't want to duplicate the view components in the interface builder. I want to create the form one time and add a reference to it in each side of the split view, each one using a different object source. I could use a NSForm, but the form is not a simple grid of outputTexts and inputText. They have a master table, and diverse kinds of inputs types, like combos, in the detail. How do I create the reusable form using the interface builder? Or how can I do it programmatically? Do I have to create a subclass of NSView and add the individual components in the code?     I am having trouble uploading a large .csv file to my HIGHCHART graph. I've been able to graph an 85KB up to 1486 lines by 9 (I) columns.     I just started learning some ruby, and I want to do something like this: print "Insert two numbers: " a, b = gets.split(" ") but I want to make a and b to be integers at the same time (in the same line).. If I add .to_i to the second line (before or after split(" ")), it doesn't work... so, how should I approach this? mapping, splitting, slicing? ok, I know I could use scanf, but other than scanf, how would I do this? sorry for such a noobish question, but I just couldn't find a good enough answer only googling...

    How to obtain the last element of the array in Postgres? I need to do it declaratively as I want to use it as a ORDER BY criteria. I wouldn't want to create a special PGSQL function for it, the less changes to the database the better in this case. In fact, what I want to do is to sort by the last word of a specific column containing multiple words. Changing the model is not an option here. In other words, I want to push Ruby's sort_by {|x| x.split[-1]} into the database level. I can split a value into array of words with Postgres string_to_array or regexp_split_to_array functions, then how to get its last element?

  • What algorithm would you use to code a parrot?

    A parrot learns the most commonly uttered words and phrases in its vicinity so it can repeat them at inappropriate moments. So how would you create a software version? Assuming it has access to a microphone and can record sound at will, how would you code it without requiring infinite resources? The best I can imagine is to divide the stream using silences in the sound, and then use some pattern recognition to encode each one as a list of tokens, storing new ones as you meet them. Hashing the token sequences and counting occurrences in a database, you could build up a picture of the most frequently uttered phrases. But given the huge variety in phrases, how do you prevent this just becoming a huge list? And the sheer number of pairs to match would surely generate lot of false positives from the combinatorial nature of matching. Would you use a neural net, since that's how a real parrot manages it? Or is there another, cleverer way of matching large-scale patterns in analogue data?

  • MemoryError when running Numpy Meshgrid

    I have 8823 data points with x,y coordinates. I'm trying to follow the answer on how to get a scatter dataset to be represented as a heatmap but when I go through the X, Y = np.meshgrid(x, y) instruction with my data arrays I get MemoryError. I am new to numpy and matplotlib and am essentially trying to run this by adapting the examples I can find.     I would like to synchronize my computer with an external camcorder recording so that I can know exactly (to the millisecond) when certain recored events happen with respect to other sensors logged by the computer. One idea is to playback short sound pulses or chirps every second from the computer that get picked up by the microphone on the camcorder. But the accuracy of a simple cron job playing a sound clip is not precise enough. I was thinking of using something like gstreamer, but how does one get it to playback a clip at precisely a certain time according to the system clock?

  • Splitting values into groups evenly

    Let me try to explain the situation the best I can. Lets say I have 3 values 1, 2, 3 I tell an algorithm to split this values into x columns. Lets say x = 2 for clarification. The algorithm determines that the group of values is best put into two columns the following way. 1st column 2nd column --------------------------- 1 3 2 Each column has an even number (totals, not literals) value. Now lets say I have the following values 7, 8, 3, 1, 4 I tell the algorithm that I want the values split into 3 columns. The algorithm now tells me that the following is the best fit. 1st column 2nd column 3rd column 8 7 3 1 4 Notice how the columns arent quiet even, but it is as close as it can get. A little over and a little under is considered ok, as long as the list is AS CLOSE TO EVEN AS IT CAN BE. Anybody got any suggestions? Know any good methods of doing this?
