• Realtime file-level mirroring from local NTFS to network drive

  We have some data collection machines running WinXP. After a new file is written, we would like to immediately copy the new file to network storage (a NetApp CIFS share) automagically. We need realtime or near realtime copies generated (copy upon filehandle close would be fine -- these are not long-running system logs). Two commercial applications I've found so far are MirrorFile and IBM's Tivoli CDP. Are there any reliable open source programs or simple ways to get Shadow Copy to do something similar? Bonus points if it runs as a service.

• Installing DB2 in Windows 2003 Cluster

  How can I install db2 with already created domain user? Or maybe there is no need, just install with local user db2admin and then create instance using existing domain user? This is how it looks I've got win 2003 cluster single quorum, I have to move db2 database to another cluster in same domain. I've added resources to new cluster like in IBM redbook, and I have problem adding db2 resource. I've got service account DOMAIN\serviceaccount and DOMAIN\db2_instance owner, to install db2 do I have to log in as db2_instance_owner? Thanks in advance

• Wireless WAN (WWAN) on a Lenovo T500 - built-in or do I need a WWAN modem?

  I use a Lenovo ThinkPad 2055-3AU at work and I want to get a Wireless WAN data plan with a local mobile telecom provider. I've read conflicting reports online about whether my system is "WWAN-ready" or not. How can I find out which wireless WAN providers (if any) my system can support without buying a separate modem? I looked through Device Manager for anything resembling a WWAN device and didn't see anything, but I also wiped the machine when I bought it and clean-installed Windows 7 with only out-of-the-box Windows and Windows-Update drivers, so it's possible that the device is there but the drivers aren't installed. FWIW, the support page at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/quickPath.do?quickPathEntry=20553AU does not specfically list anything about Wireless WAN.

• How to use chain.p7b with Apache?

  I wanted to setup a SSL website on Apache and applied for a certificate from my local ISP. All they sent me was a single file named chain.p7b. I have always used certificates from other vendors without any issues but they usually provide two files to be configured as SSLCertificateFile and SSLCertificateChainFile in Apache. Following instructions from several online resources, I opened the p7b file in Windows and extracted 4 certificates from the file. I then tried configuring Apache with one of the files and it worked, but shows a warning: The certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided. I though I have to use remaining 3 files as SSLCertificateChainFile and/or SSLCACertificateFile. I tried that but it didn't work so I am assuming it might be something completely different. Anyone faced this issue before? The following page http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21458997 talks about using a keystore but is that relevant to Apache?

• What could cause a file system to spontaneously unmount or become invalid for a short time?

  We've got DB2 LUW running on a RHEL box. We had a crash of DB2 and IBM came back and said that a file that DB2 was trying to access (through open64()) unmounted or became invalid. We have done nothing but restart the database and things seem to be running fine. Also, the file in question looks perfectly normal now: $ cd /db/log/TEAMS/tmsinst/NODE0000/TEAMS/T0000000/ $ ls -l total 557604 -rw------- 1 tmsinst tmsinst 570425344 Jan 14 10:24 C0000000.CAT $ file C0000000.CAT C0000000.CAT: data $ lsattr C0000000.CAT ------------- C0000000.CAT $ ls -l total 557604 -rw------- 1 tmsinst tmsinst 570425344 Jan 14 10:24 C0000000.CAT With those facts in hand (please correct me if I am mis-interpreting the data at hand) what could cause a file system to 'spontaneously unmount or become invalid for a short time'? What should my next step be? This is on Dell hardware and we ran their diagnostic tools against the hardware and it came back clean.

• Boot camp install from a HDD image

  How would one go about imaging an old work computer (old IBM aptiva from 2001ish) with Windows XP and lots of stuff (VPN client with settings etc) to a new iMac, while preserving Mac OSX? I can't simply install XP on the iMac and then reinstall/copy across stuff; it NEEDS to be an image. Can you even image smaller HDD's and then place them on large ones, or do they have to be the same size? Recommendations on how I go about this? Edit: It MUST be boot camp. I don't want to virtualize it from within OsX

I'm wondering for some software if it is wiser to install them from sources or from official repositories when available like: glpi inventory fusion inventory monitoring tools like nagios I tried both for glpi: compiled from sources and installing from repositories. I also installed zabbix from sources. b. What about new software releases providing enhancements: is it better to keep the release installed from the repositories /compiled or is their a 'best practice' like downloading the new software release and compiling it again (I really have no clue)?   Currently a script is used to copy files using rsync (version 2.6.9 protocol version 29) from Linux/Unix servers to W2K3 server using very basic command such as "rsync -v source_server::share_name/file_name /cygdrive///file_name" The script further makes copy of this downloaded file for other purposes. This is part of a larger middleware that is being moved to new hardware on W2K8R2 Second part of making copy of the file does not work using more recent rsync client version 3.0.7 protocol version 30 (shows up as cwRsync in add/remove programs) Reason being rsync assigns special permissions to file that includes deny. The user (service account) which downloads the file is in local admin group. The file can be copied elsewhere using rsync. It can be deleted. But cannot be opened or copied locally by same user as deny permission supersedes.

• Terminal Server Spoolsv.exe error

  We are having a terminal server ibm x3650 with 8 gb of RAM. On many occasions, at least once in a day, we get the error "The instruction at "0x7c8199b2" refrenced memory at "0x9ddc2ade". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program. Click on CANCEL to debug the program. I have surfed very many sites, microsoft included, but none of them have been able to give conclusive solution for ending this problem. When we press on ok or cancel, then our ERP application (VB-MS SQL) starts to work normally. till such time the message is there, all our reports are hanged (Business Objects reports). We have already installed all the drivers of printers on the TS. Can anyone help?

• Using a Token-ring network card instead of a router (?)

  I have cable, and the modem only has 1 network plug-in. They said I could buy my own router if I wanted to hook up two computers to it. I have an IBM Turbo 16/4 Token-Ring PC Card 2, which was in the laptop when I bought it, and the laptop also has the typical network plug (not a PC Card). Is there a way I could run the laptop as a server, and plug my desktop into the laptop, so they both have internet without my having to buy a router? (I realize routers are as cheap as $30.) Both computers run Windows XP Pro SP3. (I also have an 10/100 Etherjet Cardbus card (PC Card)). Thanks.

• Trying to figure Windows 2008 Server and Active Directory - complete novice!

  I am a novice in networking and I want to learn more about Windows Server 2008 and Active Directory. Basically I have serveral Windows 7 PC's in my home and an IBM server with Win Server 2008 installed. I have enabled Active Directory and set the server to have a static IP. Thats as far as I have got and I feel a little overwhelmed at the moment as I am not sure what to do next. What I eventually want to do is have the Windows 7 PC's to be able to be authenticated by the server - basically a mock up of what most large or medium sized businesses/organisations run. Sorry if I sound a bit sketchy, but I understand some things but not the whole picture, I guess I just need confirmation that I am sort of on the right track :) Also what are some good resources out there you can point me to, what are the absolute basics I need to to get started so I can further my learning?

• Most efficient RAID configuration with 6 disks?

  I have a hand-me-down server that I'm setting up at home and it's got 6 72Gb hard disks (as well as 2 18Gb drives that I'm using for the OS). What is the best way to configure those 6 drives? Should I RAID 5 or 6, or go with something simpler, like mirroring? I'm planning to use it to hold a source control repository, and possibly data for a development SQL server. The machine has a hardware raid controller. It is an old IBM server.

• How to output to S-Video on Windows XP in single-monitor mode (clone display)?

  I am using an IBM ThinkPad T30 running Windows XP. It is connected to a TV system via S-Video output. Windows is currently set up in multi-monitor mode with monitor 2 being output to S-Video. However, since there is no preview monitor, I can't interact with anything I drag to monitor 2 as I can't see it. I would rather have the system set up so that there is only one monitor and the output is cloned to the laptop display and S-Video. This allows me to see what I'm doing on the TV system. Is this possible?

  Goodmorning. Because my client wants to keep an old server (running php-fusion) running under the same domain name as a new server (running Drupal) I have a question. Is this possible? And most importantly how would I do this?? The old server URL structure is like projectname.domain.com and the new server's URL structure is domain.com/projectname. Is this possible? • Best ways to move a server room and 80 desktops to a new building

  Need to plan the best way to physically move a server room (12 IBM x3400 towers) and all associated networking equipment to a new building. Everything is going, comms (80 strong call centre operation), desktops(80-90) the whole lot and has to be done efficiently over a weekend. What I cant seem to find are the best ways to move equipment, i.e is it best to remove hard drives and pack them separetely, do I pack the chassis' with foam and/or surround them in bubble wrap? • How to do safely test Biztalk app by manipulating the Windows OS system time w/o breaking the Active Directory?

  i have a biztalk - window service tied middleware application which talks to other system. recently we had a request to test for scenarios which relates to the date. as we have a lot of places in the application which uses the .net Datetime.Now value, we don't really want to go into the code level and change all these values. so we're looking at the simplest way to test which is to just change the OS time. but what we notice is that sometimes when we change the system date time, we will get account lock out due to Active Directory. So my question is what's a good and safe way that i can test for future dates, etc by changing the windows OS system date time but without causing any issues with the Active Directory. And where can i find out more about AD and how it issues token and what's the correlation with the system date time changes. Thanks! ~m

• Ubuntu synaptics touchpad is too sensitive

  I recently switched from Windows to Linux (Linux Mint specifically) on my IBM T61 laptop. Since making the switch, my touchpad has been nearly unusable. When I place one finger on the touchpad, without moving it, the cursor bobs around in a small area as if I am making a number of small movements. I think the cursor is moving around because the sensitivity is too high - just rotating the tip of my finger in place moves the cursor over about one-third of the screen. My trackpad does not suffer from the same problem. I have lowered the sensitivity in the mouse settings to its minimum and I have tried to follow the advice from http://iruel430.blogspot.com/2010/06/lowering-mouse-sensitivity-in-ubuntu.html and also reduce laptop touch pad sensitivity in ubuntu. But, in both cases, my touchpad still has the same behavior. Perhaps there is an xinput setting I am overlooking? Is there a better driver I can use for my T61?

I've used VirtualBox in the past, but am looking for something that will be faster, and don't mind paying for either Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion. Does anyone have experience running Linux guests under either or both programs? I'm primarily interested in doing software development on the Linux guest installation, but I'm also very concerned with the performance and responsiveness the guest OS. • Program for managing multiple monitors to keep from rearranging Windows

  I have a setup in use where I use up to four monitors. The problem is I generally switch around what I'm using and that messes up where all of my windows are. I'm on Windows 8 and have two graphics cards. My setup is as follows: Monitor 1: Card 1 Monitor 2: Card 1 Monitor 3: Card 2 TV 1: Card 2 I almost always have all the monitors turned on and in use. When I turn on the TV though, all of my windows get reconfigured and moved to different monitors. I don't know how to stop this. Another configuration I use is where I have Monitors 1 and 2 plus TV in use, and I have my Xbox in use on Monitor 3. When I get done with the Xbox and switch Monitor 3 over to the PC, everything is reconfigured. So is there a program out there that can help with this? I have the free version of Display Fusion in use but haven't seen settings to save monitor configurations.

• C++: Declaration of template class member specialization

  When I specialize a (static) member function/constant in a template class, I'm confused as to where the declaration is meant to go. The generic implementation is obviously in the header, but what about the specialization? It can't go in the header file, because it's concrete, leading to multiple definition. But if it goes into the .cpp file, is code which calls X::f() aware of the specialization, or might it rely on the generic X::f()? So far I've got the specialization in the .cpp only, with no declaration in the header. I'm not having trouble compiling or even running my code (on gcc, don't remember the version at the moment), and it behaves as expected - recognizing the specialization. But A) I'm not sure this is correct, and I'd like to know what is, and B) my Doxygen documentation comes out wonky and very misleading (more on that in a moment a later question). • What is the best way to solve an Objective-C namespace collision?

  Objective-C has no namespaces; it's much like C, everything is within one global namespace. Common practice is to prefix classes with initials, e.g. if you are working at IBM, you could prefix them with "IBM"; if you work for Microsoft, you could use "MS"; and so on. Sometimes the initials refer to the project, e.g. Adium prefixes classes with "AI" (as there is no company behind it of that you could take the initials). Apple prefixes classes with NS and says this prefix is reserved for Apple only. So far so well. But appending 2 to 4 letters to a class name in front is a very, very limited namespace. E.g. MS or AI could have an entirely different meanings (AI could be Artificial Intelligence for example) and some other developer might decide to use them and create an equally named class. Bang, namespace collision. Okay, if this is a collision between one of your own classes and one of an external framework you are using, you can easily change the naming of your class, no big deal. But what if you use two external frameworks, both frameworks that you don't have the source to and that you can't change? Your application links with both of them and you get name conflicts. How would you go about solving these? What is the best way to work around them in such a way that you can still use both classes? In C you can work around these by not linking directly to the library, instead you load the library at runtime, using dlopen(), then find the symbol you are looking for using dlsym() and assign it to a global symbol (that you can name any way you like) and then access it through this global symbol. E.g. if you have a conflict because some C library has a function named open(), you could define a variable named myOpen and have it point to the open() function of the library, thus when you want to use the system open(), you just use open() and when you want to use the other one, you access it via the myOpen identifier. Is something similar possible in Objective-C and if not, is there any other clever, tricky solution you can use resolve namespace conflicts? Any ideas? Update: Just to clarify this: answers that suggest how to avoid namespace collisions in advance or how to create a better namespace are certainly welcome; however, I will not accept them as the answer since they don't solve my problem. I have two libraries and their class names collide. I can't change them; I don't have the source of either one. The collision is already there and tips on how it could have been avoided in advance won't help anymore. I can forward them to the developers of these frameworks and hope they choose a better namespace in the future, but for the time being I'm searching a solution to work with the frameworks right now within a single application. Any solutions to make this possible?

• Using unixODBC to connect to Oracle server

  I am trying to configure our web server (RHEL 5.4 x86) to connect to an Oracle database using unixODBC. I have installed unixODBC-2.2.11-7.1.1, which yum tells me is the latest version. I have also installed the Oracle InstantClient 11.2 and the Oracle InstantClient ODBC library. I have symlinked the all the .so files in /usr/lib/oracle/11.2/client/lib to /usr/lib. I have set $LD_LIBRARY_PATH to /usr/lib/, $ORACLE_HOME to /usr/lib/oracle and $TNS_ADMIN to the directory containing my (valid) Tnsnames.ora file.
