• Updating the jump in game

  I am making a Java game and I want my game to run the same on any FPS so I'm using time delta between each update. This is the update method of the Player: public void update(long timeDelta) { //speed is the movement speed of a player on X axis //timeDelta is expressed in nano seconds so I'm dividing it with 1000000000 to express it in seconds if (Input.keyDown(37)) this.velocityX -= speed * (timeDelta / 1000000000.0); if (Input.keyDown(39)) this.velocityX += speed * (timeDelta / 1000000000.0); if(Input.keyPressed(38)) { this.velocityY -= 6; } velocityY += g * (timeDelta/1000000000.0); //applying gravity move(velocityX, velocityY); /*this is method which moves a player according to velocityX and velocityY, and checking the collision */ this.velocityX = 0.0; } The strange thing is that when I have unlimited FPS (and update number) my player is jumping about 10 blocks. It jumps even higher when the FPS is increasing. If I limit FPS it is jumping 4 blocks. (BLOCK: 32x32) I have just realized that the problem is this: if(Input.keyPressed(38)) { this.velocityY -= 6; } I add -6 to velocityY which increases player's Y proportionally to the update number and not to the time. But I don't know how to fix this.

• Ubuntu 12.04 won't shut down - stopping winbind daemon

  My Precise Pangolin sometimes won't shut down - the screen is black with text on it. Mostly last line says something like "stopping winbind deamon" (sometimes also virtualbox, which is above winbind daemon; edit: sometimes the last line says "running unattended updates") and it stays like this for about ten miutes. Then I usually hold the power button for 5s to shut it down. It's very unpredictable - sometimes the computer shuts down without problem and sometimes it hangs. I've tried many ways to shut it down: HW button, panel applet, sudo shutdown -h now, sudo poweroff, sudo halt, etc. even sudo reboot or restart from panel applet have this problem. Sometimes it works ok but every method named hung at least once on the same (damned) line. My specs: FUJITSU SIEMENS LIFEBOOK E8310, Intel Core2 Duo T7300 @ 2.00GHz, 3GB RAM, GPU: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family Ubuntu 12.04.2 32bit, 3.5.0-41-generic kernel (but it did it on older kernels and 12.04.x systems too). • C++ Succinctly now available!

  Over the summer I worked with SyncFusion to create an eBook based off of my C# to C++ guide for their free Succinctly Series of eBooks. Today the result, C++ Succinctly, was published for download. It is a free (registration required; they make tools and libraries for .NET development so you might get an occasional email from them – I’ve been signed up for a few months and have had maybe 3 emails total so it’s not horrible super spam or anything ) and you can download it as a PDF or a Kindle .MOBI file (or both). I’m excited with how it turned out and enjoyed working with the people at SyncFusion. The book contains a total of 20 code samples, which you can download from BitBucket (there’s a link very early in the book). Almost all of the code is also inline in the book itself so that you don’t need to worry about flipping back and forth between your dev machine and your eReader (but if you want to try to understand a concept better, you can easily download the code, open it up in VS 2012, and play around with it to see what happens when you tinker with things). The code does require Visual Studio 2012 because of its expanded support for C++11 features and since I wrote all of the samples as Console programs for clarity and compactness, you will need a version that supports C++ desktop development (currently VS 2012 Pro, Premium, or Ultimate). Sometime this Fall, Microsoft will be releasing Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows Desktop which should provide a free way to use the samples. That said, I tested all of the samples with MinGW and only the StorageDurationSample will not compile with it due to the thread-local storage code. If you comment that out then you can compile and run all the samples with MinGW (or using a recent version of GCC in a GNU/Linux environment, or any other C++ compiler that provides the same level of C++11 support that Visual Studio 2012 does). • How can I reduce the amount of time it takes to fully regression test an application ready for release?

  An app I work on is being developed with a modified version of scrum. If you are not familiar with scrum, it's just an alternative approach to a more traditional watefall model, where a series of features are worked on for a set amount of time known as a sprint. The app is written in C# and makes use of WPF. We use Visual C# 2010 Express edition as an IDE. If we work on a sprint and add in a few new features, but do not plan to release until a further sprint is complete, then regression testing is not an issue as such. We just test the new features and give the app a good once over. However, if a release is planned that our customers can download - a full regression test is factored in. In the past this wasn't a big deal, it took 3 or 4 days and the devs simply fix up any bugs found in the regression phase, but now, as the app is getting larger and larger and incorporating more and more features, the regression is spanning out for weeks. I am interested in any methods that people know of or use that can decrease this time. At the moment the only ideas I have are to either start writing Unit Tests, which I have never fully tried out in a commercial environment, or to research the possibilty of any UI Automation API's or tools that would allow me to write a program to perform a series of batch tests. I know literally nothing about the possibilities of UI automation so any information would be valuable. I don't know that much about Unit testing either, how complicated can the tests be? Is it possible to get Unit tests to use the UI? Are there any other methods I should consider? Thanks for reading, and for any advice in advance.

• Merging similar graphs based solely on the graph structure?

  I am looking for (or attempting to design) a technique for matching nodes from very similar graphs based on the structure of the graph*. In the examples below, the top graph has 5 nodes, and the bottom graph has 6 nodes. I would like to match the nodes from the top graph to the nodes in the bottom graph, such that the "0" nodes match, and the "1" nodes match, etc. This seems logically possible, because I can do it in my head for these simple examples. Now I just need to express my intuition in code. Are there any established algorithms or patterns I might consider? (* When I say based on the structure of the graph, I mean the solution shouldn't depend on the node labels; the numeric labels on the nodes are only for demonstration.) I'm also interested in the performance of any potential solutions. How well will they scale? Could I merge graphs with millions of nodes? In more complex cases, I recognize that the best solution may be subject to interpretation. Still, I'm hoping for a "good" way to merge complex graphs. (These are directed graphs; the thicker portion of an edge represents the head.)

• Expected time for lazy evaluation with nested functions?

  A colleague and I are doing a free R course, although I believe this is a more general lazy evaluation issue, and have found a scenario that we have discussed briefly and I'd like to find out the answer from a wider community. The scenario is as follows (pseudo code): wrapper => function(thing) { print => function() { write(thing) } } v = createThing(1, 2, 3) w = wrapper(v) v = createThing(4, 5, 6) w.print() // Will print 4, 5, 6 thing. v = create(7, 8, 9) w.print() // Will print 4, 5, 6 because "thing" has now been evaluated. Another similar situation is as follows: // Using the same function as above v = createThing(1, 2, 3) v = wrapper(v) w.print() // The wrapper function incestuously includes itself. Now I understand why this happens but where my colleague and I differ is on what should happen. My colleague's view is that this is a bug and the evaluation of the passed in argument should be forced at the point it is passed in so that the returned "w" function is fixed. My view is that I would prefer his option myself, but that I realise that the situation we are encountering is down to lazy evaluation and this is just how it works and is more a quirk than a bug. I am not actually sure of what would be expected, hence the reason I am asking this question. I think that function comments could express what will happen, or leave it to be very lazy, and if the coder using the function wants the argument evaluated then they can force it before passing it in. So, when working with lazy evaulation, what is the practice for the time to evaluate an argument passed, and stored, inside a function?

• SQL Server Configuration Scripting Utility Release 9

  There’s another update to my little utility to script a SQL Server’s configuration.  I use this for two purposes.  First, I use it to keep my database mirroring servers up to date.  Second, I capture the output in a version control system and keep that for historical reference. In release 3.0.9 I made the following changes: Rewrote the encrypted trigger scripting.  It will now list the encrypted triggers in a comment in the table script but can’t actually script them. It now scripts any server event notifications. You can script a single database using the /scriptdb flag.  Please note that it will also script the instance and system databases when it does this. It will script any user-defined endpoints.  This will capture your mirroring endpoints and more importantly any service broker endpoints. It will gracefully skip database mail on the Express Edition. It still doesn’t support SQL Server 2012.  I think that’s the next feature to add though.

• Problem with saving pictures in certain ways [migrated]

  I am making a Garfield comic viewer in C#. I have a button that saves the comic on screen to the computer. However, when I compile it from Visual C# Express, it saves perfectly. When I run the exe file from the directory, I get an unhandled exception message stating "A generic error occurred in GDI+". • Social Network ( Help) [on hold]

  I am in a great "problem" so to speak , and I need opinions to decide. The problem is to create a social network without knowing the number of users who use it (but if thinking if they were sufficient ) . The question is which language and framework to use .... I do not mind having to learn new technologies and / or languages ??. I am among PHP ( Laravel - Symfony - other? ) Ruby ( Ruby on Rails 4? ) Javascript ( Ember , express, locomotive , other? ) Python ( Django ) Java ( Grails , Play, other?) I have experience in both PHP and frameworks. In Symfony developed part of it, but I got tired having to do a thousand configurations for all . I know very little about Ruby , but I saw very easy . I do not know are saying the performance. Javascript costs me to get used to their paradigm , and do not know if at all sure to cover everything with Javascript. Django and python ( very poor knowledge ) Java , experience in data structure and android , but not web . Regarding the / s databases: In my head I have to MongoDB and costs change of opinion by another database with respect to documentation and EASE performance . But .......... frameworks have no support at all clear . I also thought of mixing technologies for using a tecnlogía backend and the frontend other. As I read in the new social network Origo . They use Symfony for REST and javascript for the frontend . ( Backbone , Underscore and RequireJS ) What do you recommend me ?

• 64-bit 13.10 shows 1GB less RAM than 64-bit 13.04 did

  Multiple 64-bit versions (Kubuntu, Lubuntu and Xubuntu) once installed on my ThinkPad R60 show 3GB of RAM, not the correct 4GB of RAM. Last week with 13.04, I had 4GB of RAM (which matches the BIOS) and this week I have 3GB available. Inquiring minds want to know. • Wireless Drivers for Broadcom BCM 4321 (14e4:4329) will not stay connected to a wireless network

  So, I'm not necessary new to Linux, I just never took the time to learn it, so please, bare with me. I just swapped out one of my wireless cards from one computer to another. This wireless card in question would be a "Broadcom BCM4321 (14e4:4329)" or actually a "Netgear WN311B Rangemax Next 270 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter", but that's not important. I've tried (but probably screwed up in the process) installing the "wl" , "b43" and "brcmsmac" drivers, or at least I think I did. Currently I have only the following drivers loaded: eugene@EugeneS-PCu:~$ lsmod | grep "brcmsmac\|b43\|ssb\|bcma\|wl" b43 387371 0 bcma 52096 1 b43 mac80211 630653 1 b43 cfg80211 484040 2 b43,mac80211 ssb_hcd 12869 0 ssb 62379 2 b43,ssb_hcd The main issue is that with most of the drivers available that I've installed, they will find my wireless network but, they will only stay connected for about a minute with abnormally slow speed and then all of a sudden disconnect. Currently, the computer is hooked into another to share it's connect so that I can install drivers from the internet instead of loading them on to a flash drive and doing it offline. If anyone has any insight to the problem, that would be awesome. If not, I'll probably just look up how to install the Windows closed source driver. Edit 1: Even when I try the method here, as suggested when this was marked as a duplicate, I still can't stay connected to a wireless network. Edit 2: After discussing my issue with @Luis, he opened my question back up and told me to include the tests/procedures in the comments. Basically I did this: Read the first answer of the link above when this question was marked as duplicate which involved installing removing bcmwl-kernel-source and instead install firmware-b43-installer and b43-fwcutter. No change of result and contacted Luis in the comments, who then told me to try the second answer which involved removing my previous mistake and installing bcmwl-kernel-source Now the Network Manger (this has happend before, but usally I fixed it by using a different driver) even recognizes WiFi exist (both non-literal and literal). Luis who then suggested sudo rfkill unblock all rfkill unblock all didn't return anything, so I decide to try sudo rfkill list all. Returns nothing (no wonder rfkill unblock all did nothing). I enter lsmod | grep "brcmsmac\|b43\|ssb\|bcma\|wl" and that returns nothing. Try loading the driver by entering sudo modprobe b43 and try lsmod | grep "brcmsmac\|b43\|ssb\|bcma\|wl" again. • Fun with Sun Ray, 3D, Oracle VM x86 and SRIOV

  One of the things I like about my job is that I get to play around with stuff and make use of the technologies we work on in my teams. Sort of my own little playground. It allows me to study the products in great detail and put them to use in ways that individual product teams don't always intend them to be used for :) but that makes it fun. I have a lot of this set up at home because... work is sort of hobby and I just like to tinker with it. Anyway, a few weeks ago I was looking at my sun ray rig at home and how well 3D works. Google Earth and some basic opengl tests like glxspheres combined with virtualgl. It resulted in some very cool demos recorded with my little camera (sorry for the crappy quality of the video :-) : OVDC (soft client) on my mac Sun Ray 2FS Never mind the hickups during zoom, that's because I was using the scrollwheel on my mouse and I can't scroll uninterrupted :) Anyway, this is quite cool ! The setup for this was the following : Sun Ray on LAN, Sun Ray Server 5 latest installed on OL5.5 inside a VM running on Oracle VM 2.2 (hardware virt, with a virtual network (vif)) and the virtualgl rendering happened on another box (wopr5) that runs linux on a little atom D520 with an ION2 gpu. So network goes from Sun Ray to Sun Ray Server to wopr5 and back. Given that this is full screen 3D it puts a good amount of load on the network and it's pretty cool that SRS was just a VM :) So, separately, I had written a little blog entry about using sriov and oracle vm a while back. link to sriov blog entry Last night when I came home I wanted to do some more playing around with SRIOV and live migrate. To do this, I wanted to set up a VM with 2 network interfaces, one virtual network (vif) and then one that's one of the SRIOV virtual functions from my network card. Inside the guest they show as eth0 and eth1, and then bond them using a standard linux bonding device (bond0 here) with active active links. The goal here is that on live migrate, we would detach the VF (eth1 in guest in this case), the bond would then just hum along on eth0 (vif) we can live migrate the VM and then on the other server after the migrate completes we re-attach a VF to the VM there and eth1 pops up again and the bond uses both eth0/eth1 to do its work. So, to set this up, I figured, why not use my sun ray server VM because the 3D work generates a nice network load and is very latency/timing sensitive. In the end, I ran glxspheres on my sunray server (vm) displaying on my sun ray 2 fs and while that was running, I did my live migrate test of this vm (unplug pci VF, migrate, reconnect vf) and guess what, it just kept running :) veryyyyyy cool. now, it was supposed to, but it's always nice to see it actually work, for real. • ATI Radeon HD 4650 AGP Video card not recognized properly

  I have an ASUS ATI Radeon HD 4650 AGP in this system (yeah, I know how old it is). I've been on Ubuntu since 10.04, and the system has never properly recognized the card. I have always had the VESA drivers installed. Now that I have the time to address the problem, 12.04 was listing the card as "Unknown" under the System Settings. Meanwhile, Sysinfo recognizes the card as: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV730 Pro AGP [Radeon HD 4600 Series] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 0028 So I know that this card should be using the radeon driver (or even the radeonhd driver). However, when I installed the mesa-utils package, the card is suddenly reported as: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x300) So now, I'm completely at a loss. It seems that the llvmpipe stuff has to do with OpenGL, but it still appears that I don't have the proper video driver installed. That being said, anyone know what I can do to force the system to recognize the card and use the radeon driver? [EDIT 05.28] I did look at some other information, including glxinfo and a couple of other commands (it was REALLY late, so I don't remember the other commands) and I got these: glxinfo | grep vendor: server glx vendor string: SGI client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI OpenGL vendor string: X.org glxinfo | grep renderer: OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV730 One of the other commands gave a whole lot of info and near the end stated that the activation string for the radeon driver was "modprobe radeon". I've tried that from sudo and as root, but it doesn't seem to change anything. I'm at a complete loss. I've even added the xorg-edgers ppa to my Software Sources and updated and rebooted the system, but nothing has changed. Most of all, I can't seem to find any documentation on this issue, as it seems that it's assumed that the radeon driver will install automatically, no questions asked. I feel like such a newbie. Does anyone have any ideas on this? Yesterday someone fixed this for me but after installing 94 days worth of updates my system wanted to restart.   Question: I see [ 20.473125] composite sync not supported and several such entries when I run dmesg. What do they mean? Background: I'm trying to debug a problem where my laptop won't suspend. Since acpi seems happy and I can suspend easily from the command line, I've turned to tracking down all boot-up errors/warnings. • Playing a video logs me out

  When I try to play a video in vlc, totem or banshee, it immediately logs me out. Sometimes this happens when I try to full screen the video. This seems to happen only after upgrading to ubuntu 11, and happens for multiple kinds of files, like avi and m4v. The motherboard is Asus a8v-mx. Please help me fix my ubuntu installation. Thanks. • Can not connect to wireless on 12.04 with Intel WiFi Link 5100

  I am having problem in connecting to wifi. I have dual boot (Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04) on my Dell Studio 15. I upgraded to 12.04 quite some time ago (at least one month) from 11.10. Everything was working fine till yesterday. Since yesterday I can see the list of available Wifi connection but does not connect to any or if connects (after hours of trying) then disconnects after few minutes. My wifi interface is Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN. However the problem is on both Windows and Ubuntu. • Xorg.conf (nvidia) Second Monitor getting settings of first

  I've been spending the weekend (and some time before that) trying to set up my Korean QHD270 and Benq G2222HDL monitors with Ubuntu 13.10. With the nouveau drivers install both monitor function perfectly fine. After installing the nvidia drivers the Benq works but the QHD270 does not. Now, after days of struggling I managed to get the QHD270 to work following a mixture of blogs, particularly; this one and learnitwithme. Now, unfortunatly my G2222HDL does not work.
