  • Dynamic Custom Fields for Data Model

    - by Jerry Deng
    I am in the process of creating a dynamic database where user will be able to create resource type where he/she can add custom fields (multiple texts, strings, and files) Each resource type will have the ability to display, import, export its data; I've been thinking about it and here are my approaches. I would love to hear what do you guys think. Ideas: just hashing all the custom data in a data field (pro: writing is easier, con: reading back out may be harder); children fields (the model will have multiple fields of strings, fields of text, and fields for file path); fixed number of custom fields in the same table with a key mapping data hash stored in the same row; Non-SQL approach, but then the problem would be generating/changing models on the fly to work with different custom fields;

  • How to render all records from a nested set into a real html tree

    - by Christoph Schiessl
I'm using the awesome_nested_set plugin in my Rails project. I have two models that look like this (simplified): class Customer < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :categories end class Category < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :customer # Columns in the categories table: lft, rgt and parent_id acts_as_nested_set :scope => :customer_id validates_presence_of :name # Further validations... end The tree in the database is constructed as expected. All the values of parent_id, lft and rgt are correct. The tree has multiple root nodes (which is of course allowed in awesome_nested_set). Now, I want to render all categories of a given customer in a correctly sorted tree like structure: for example nested <ul> tags. This wouldn't be too difficult but I need it to be efficient (the less sql queries the better). Update: Figured out that it is possible to calculate the number of children for any given Node in the tree without further SQL queries: number_of_children = (node.rgt - node.lft - 1)/2. This doesn't solve the problem but it may prove to be helpful.

  • Rails Variable across all controller actions

    - by bob
Hello, This should be a very simple rails question. I have a variable like the following. @administration = Administration.first I want this variable to be accessible through every controller action across all my controllers so for example if I have a Product controller and inside of it I have the usual CRUD actions, I want the @administration variable as defined above to be put into all the CRUD actions. (It would not be needed in destroy or create or update). I have many controllers throughout my project and I was wondering if there is an easier way than adding it manually through all of the actions that I want it in. I tried a global variable $administration = Administration.first but I run into an issue where it is not updated when I update the actual content of the Administration.first table. Also, I would like to avoid global variables. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! :)

  • Rails always include (join) on initialize

    - by Seth
Hello, I have a User model as illustrated below: class User < ActiveRecord belongs_to :college belongs_to :class_level end I want to ALWAYS join with those other two tables returning one simplified User object. How do I accomplish this in my User model. I'm aware that I can do this in another model: class Foo < ActiveRecord has_many :users, :include => [:college, :class_level] end But I want to do this in my User model, so Foo.users will either be eager loaded OR be joined already. Is there a way to create an initialize this in the User model?

  • Rails model without database

    - by FlipFlop
I want to create a Rails (2.1 and 2.2) model with ActiveRecord validations, but without a database table. What is the most widely used approach? I've found some plugins that claim to offer this functionality, but many of them don't appear to be widely used or maintained. What does the community recommend I do? Right now I am leaning toward coming up with my own solution based on this blog post.

    - by McDoku
I am trying to get a collection select from an another model and I keep getting the above error. Looked everywhere, got rails casts but nothing makes sense. _form.rb <%= f.label :city %><br /> <%= f.collection_select (:share ,:city_id, City.all , :id, :name ) %> It highlights 'form' on the error report <h1>New share</h1> <%= render 'form' %> <%= link_to 'Back', shares_path %> Here are my models... class Share include Mongoid::Document field :name, type: String field :type, type: String field :summary, type: String field :description, type: String field :city, type: String embedded_in :city has_many :category end class City include Mongoid::Document embedded_in :share field :name, type: String field :country, type: String attr_accessible :name, :city_id, :id end Searched everywhere and I cannot figure it out. It must be something silly.

  • Accessing a nested hash in a controller

    - by Magicked
I have the following (snipped) parameters passed into my controller. Parameters: {"commit"=>"OK", "action"=>"set_incident_incident_status_id", "id"=>"1", "controller"=>"incidents", "incident"=>{"incident_status_id"=>"1"}} I know that if I want to select the incident, I can do: @incident = Incident.find(params[:id]) How do I access the "incident"={"incident_status_id"="1"}? I thought to try something like: @incident_status = IncidentStatus.find(params[:incident => :incident_status_id]) But that didn't work. I'm assuming it's just a syntax problem at this point, and I haven't found a solution yet. Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Operations inside Rails I18n locales' strings

    - by Cristobal Viedma
Hi, I am trying to put operations inside the locales to adapt to different languages. For example, in English a billion is 1,000,000,000, however in Spanish a billion is 1,000,000,000,000 so I would like to be able to have the following: en: billion: "You have %{money} billions" es: billion: "Tienes %{money/1000.0} billones" In order to be able to write: I18n.t :billion, :money => whatever And be right for whatever language. However, it seems that I cannot put operations inside the locales' strings. Any hint on how should I be doing this? Maybe my approach is just wrong "philosophically" talking? Thanks all!

  • GIt Deployment + Configuration Files + Heroku

    - by Andrew
I'm using Heroku to host a Rails app, which means using Git to deploy to Heroku. Because of the "pure Git workflow" on Heroku, anything that needs to go upstream to the server has to be configured identically on my local box. However I need to have certain configuration files be different depending on whether I'm in the local setup or deployed on Heroku. Again, because of the deployment method Heroku uses I can't use .gitignore and a template (as I have seen suggested many times, and have used in other projects). What I need is for git to somehow track changes on a file, but selectively tell git not to override certain files when pulling from a particular repo -- basically to make certain changes one-way only. Can this be done? I'd appreciate any suggestions!

  • Refactoring Rails 3 Routes

    - by Martin
    Hello, I have this in my routes: get '/boutique/new' => 'stores#new', :as => :new_store, :constraints => { :id => /[a-z0-9_-]/ } post '/boutique' => 'stores#create', :as => :create_store, :constraints => { :id => /[a-z0-9_-]/ } get '/:shortname' => 'stores#show', :as => :store, :constraints => { :id => /[a-z0-9_-]/ } get '/:shortname/edit' => 'stores#edit', :as => :edit_store, :constraints => { :id => /[a-z0-9_-]/ } put '/:shortname' => 'stores#update', :as => :update_store, :constraints => { :id => /[a-z0-9_-]/ } delete '/:shortname' => 'stores#delete', :as => :destroy_store, :constraints => { :id => /[a-z0-9_-]/ } Is there a cleaner way to do the same? It doesn't look any elegant and even less if I add some more controls/actions to it. Thank you.

  • Rails: How do I validate against this code that I put into the lib/ directory?

    - by randombits
Having a bit of difficulty finding out the proper way to mix in code that I put into the lib/ directory for Rails 2.3.5. I have several models that require phone validation. I had at least three models that used the same code, so I wanted to keep things DRY and moved it out to the lib/ directory. I used to have code like this in each model: validate :phone_is_valid Then I'd have a phone_is_valid method in the model: protected def phone_is_valid # process a bunch of logic errors.add_to_base("invalid phone") if validation failed end I moved this code out into lib/phones/ and in lib/phones I have lib/phones/phone_validation.rb, and in there I copy pasted the phone_is_valid method. My question is, how do I mix this into all of my models now? And does my validate :phone_is_valid method remain the same or does that change? I want to make sure that the errors.add_to_base method continues to function as it did before while keeping everything DRY. I also created another file in lib/phones/ called lib/phones/phone_normalize.rb. Again, many models need the value input by the user to be normalized. Meaning turn (555) 222-1212 to 5552221212 or something similar. Can I invoke that simply by invoking Phones::Phone_Normalize::normalize_method(number)? I suppose I'm confused on the following: How to use the lib directory for validation How to use the lib directory for commonly shared methods that return values

  • How to access YAML sublevel item in a nested variable?

    - by Kleber S.
Getting the error: You have a nil object when you didn't expect it! You might have expected an instance of Array. The error occurred while evaluating nil.[] APP_CONFIG are loading fine. account_type = 'sample' allowed = APP_CONFIG['account']["#{account_type}"]['highlight'] Error points to 'allowed' variable line. The method that I currently trying to is: def self.allow_highlight?(account) account_type = Account.find(account).active_pack # returning a string - OK logger.debug account_type.class # checked on console - OK allowed = APP_CONFIG['account']["#{account_type}"]['highlight'] # Error line if total_account_highlight > allowed false else true end end Hope you understand. Any doubts, please ask me. Thanks!

  • has_many conditions or proc on foreign key

    - by ere
I have a has_many association between two models using a date as both the foreign and primary key for each model. It works perfectly one way but not the other. Works has_one :quiz_log, :primary_key => :start_at, :foreign_key => :start_at Doesn't work has_many :event_logs, :primary_key => :start_at, :foreign_key => :start_at The reason being (i think) because the start_at on QuizLog is a date and the start_at on EventLog is a datetime. So it returns nil trying to match the exact datetime on a simple date. How can I cast the foreign_key start_at on the second statement to convert it first from datetime to simply date so it will match the second model?

  • How do I order by foreign attribute for belongs_to reference where there are 2 keys to foreign table

    - by Will
I have a Model which has a belongs_to association with another Model as follows class Article belongs_to :author, :class_name => "User" end If I wanted to find all articles for a particular genre ordered by author I would do something like the following articles = Article.all(:includes => [:author], :order => "users.name") However if Article happens to have two references to User how can I sort on :author? class Article belongs_to :editor, :class_name => "User" belongs_to :author, :class_name => "User" end I have tried articles = Article.all(:includes => [:author], :order => "users.name") #=> incorrect results articles = Article.all(:includes => [:author], :order => "authors.name") #=> Exception Thrown

  • Repeated Rake Task Using Delayed Job

    - by bob
Hello, I am currently using the delayed_job gem and I was wondering how to run a rake task every 5 minutes. I want to run "rake ts:reindex RAILS_ENV=production" every 5 minutes but I'm not sure where to start. I really don't have much more I can say about this because I am VERY inexperienced in this area of rails development.

  • Rails ActiveRecord - How to set association save order

    - by Altonymous
I have a weird relationship that needs to be maintained for legacy processes. I'm trying to figure out how to create the relationship given the new model association. New Relationship Setup Machine has_many MachineReadings has_many Disks has_many DiskReadings Old Relationship Setup Machine has_many MachineReadings has_many DiskReadings has_many Disks The problem is data will come in on the Machine model as nested attributes using the new relationship setup. I need to update the machine_reading_id in the DiskReading model so the old association can continue to be used. I tried doing this via an after_save hook that would traverse back up to the machine and then down to the readings to get the machine_reading.id so I could populate the DiskReading model. However, the associations aren't being saved in the order I would expect. They are saving the Disks & DiskReadings before saving the MachineReadings. So when I go after the machine_reading.id it hasn't been written and thus I am unable to get access to it. For example: #machine_disk_reading.rb after_save :build_old_relationship def build_old_relationship self.machine_reading_id = self.disk.machine.readings.find_by_date_time(self.date_time).id end

  • Redirect on catching an exception in a method in the model

    - by Arkid
I am using Authlogic-connect to connect various service providers. There is a method in user.rb def complete_oauth_transaction token = token_class.new(oauth_token_and_secret) old_token = token_class.find_by_key_or_token(token.key, token.token) token = old_token if old_token if has_token?(oauth_provider) self.errors.add(:tokens, "you have already created an account using your #{token_class.service_name} account, so it") else self.access_tokens << token end end When a service provider is already added it gives the error as stated in the has_token? method and the page breaks. I need to redirect the app to the same page and flash the error. How do i do this? I have overridden the method in my own user.rb so that I can change the code.

  • Rails group validation with just one error message

    - by Victor
The following validation code in the model: validates :formatted_address, :zip, :city, :state, :country, :presence => true, :message => "is incomplete. Please enter full address." is displayed when either of the fields are empty. Let's say now :address and country are empty, 2 errors are displayed: Formatted Address is incomplete. Please enter full address. Country is incomplete. Please enter full address. How can I group the error message in the validation to just show one error message if either of the fields validated does not exist? Address is incomplete. Please enter full address. Thanks.

  • Deep relationships in Rails

    - by Neil Middleton
I have some projects. Those projects have users through memberships. However, those users belong to companies. Question is, how do I find out which companies can access a project? Ideally I'd be able to do project.users.companies, but that won't work. Is there a nice, pleasant way of doing this?

  • Nested Routes Show Action: What objects does it expect?

    - by NoahClark
Here is the relevant line from my rake routes: client_note GET /clients/:client_id/notes/:id(.:format) notes#show When I try passing in the objects like <%= client_note_path([client, @notes.first]) %>> I get: No route matches {:action=>"show", :controller=>"notes", :client_id=>[#<Client id: 5, ... , #<Note id: 9, ...]} Which made me think to try a client ID. So, I tried: <%= client_note_path([client.id, @notes.first]) %> which gives me: No route matches {:action=>"show", :controller=>"notes", :client_id=>[5, #<Note id: 9,content: "He just bought a brand new bobcat, be sure to charg...", client_id: 5, created_at: "2012-06-11 16:18:16", updated_at: "2012-06-11 16:18:16">]} Which, made me want to try just passing in a client ID. <%= client_note_path(client.id) %> No route matches {:action=>"show", :controller=>"notes", :client_id=>5} Still not what I'm looking for. I want to be able to show an individual note which can normally be found at a url like looks like: http://localhost:3000/clients/2/notes/3/
