  • JQuery cycle plugin + PNG overlay + Image alt text as title conflict

    - by Dave
I am trying to achive the following: Create an image gallery using the JQuery Cycle plugin that shows images with titles (taken from the alt text) Each image has a PNG absolutley posiioned over the top to achieve rounded corners effect Here's my gallery HTML: <div id="slideshow" class="pics"> <div class="photo-container" > <img src="/path/to/image" alt="alt text as title" /> <img class="mask" src="path/to/mask" /> </div> </div><!-- /slideshow --> <div id="title"></div> Here's my Jquery gallery function: $(function() { $('#slideshow').after('<div id="nav" class="nav"><span style="margin: 0 5px 0 30px;">next image</span>').cycle({ fx: 'fade', timeout: 0, cleartypeNoBg: true, pager: '#nav', next: '#slideshow', before: onBefore }); function onBefore() { $('#title').html(this.alt); } $('#nav a').after('<span>&gt;</span>') }); </script> Here is my CSS that handles the mask: .photo-container { position: relative; display: block; overflow:hidden; border: none; } img.mask { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; overflow:hidden; border: none; } The above does not output the alt text into the "title" div. When I remove the mask, it works: <div id="slideshow" class="pics"> <img src="/path/to/image" alt="alt text as title" /> </div><!-- /slideshow --> <div id="title"></div> Any ideas why the additonal div / image is casuing the title to not display? Thank you

  • Detect mouseover and show tooltip text for dots on an HTML Canvas

    - by carl asquith
Ive recently created a "map" although not very sophisticated (im working on it) it has the basic function and is generally heading in the right direction. If you look at it you can see a tiny red dots and on those tiny red dots i want to mouseover it and see text basically but ive had a bit of trouble getting the code right. http://hummingbird2.x10.mx/website%20creation/mainpage.htm This is all the code so far. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN""http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>Oynx Warrior</title> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="mystyle.css" /> </head> <body> <h1>Oynx Warrior</h1> <canvas id="myCanvas" width="500" height="500" style="border:1px solid #c3c3c3;"> Your browser does not support the canvas element. </canvas> <script type="text/javascript"> var c=document.getElementById("myCanvas"); var cxt=c.getContext("2d"); cxt.fillStyle="#red"; cxt.beginPath(); cxt.arc(50,50,1,0,Math.PI*2,true); cxt.closePath(); cxt.fill(); </script> </body> </html>

  • CSS - Positioning images next to text

    - by jpjoki
Hi, I'm doing a site in which images need to presented next to textual content - a sort of pseudo two-column layout, as the images and text come from a single html source. I've found quite a simple way to do this by putting the images as their own paragraphs and floating them. Would there still be a more simpler way (in regards to html) to do this without these extra paragraphs and by only attributing extra css to images? If the floated image is in the same paragraph than the text, then paragraphs with and without images would be different in width. EDIT: Basically, I'm looking for as simple HTML markup as possible to position images like this. The CSS can be complex ;) CSS: p { width: 500px; } p.image { float: right; width: 900px; } Current HTML: <p class="image"><img src="image.jpg" /></p> <p>Some text here.</p> Is the above possible with this HTML? <p><img src="image.jpg" /></p>

  • Jquery Resize Line of text To Fit Div Width

    - by Douglas Cottrell
I am using the following script to resize a one line string to fit properly in a div box. <script type="text/javascript"> $( '.test' ).css( 'font-size', 0 ).each(function ( i, box2 ) { var width = $( box2 ).width(), line = $( box2 ).wrapInner( '<span style="white-space:nowrap">' ).children()[ 0 ]; function changeFontSize( n ) { $( box2 ).css( 'font-size', function ( i, val ) { return parseInt( val, 10 ) + n; }); } while ( $( line ).width() < width ) { changeFontSize( 1 ); } changeFontSize( -1 ); $( box2 ).text( $( line ).text() ); }); </script> This script works perfect in FF, Chrome, and opera. However in IE if the user is in compatability mode it errors and locks up the browser. I do not know enough about the older browsers to know what I have added that is not compatible. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Sending variable data from one of two text boxes to javascript

    - by Enyalius
Greetings, all! I am fairly new to JS (my background is in C++, enterprise languages like assembly and COBOL, and some light .NET), so I was wondering if I could get some advice regarding how to send variable information from one of two text boxes to some javascript and then have the JS do some basic checks and such. Here's the pseudocode for what I am trying to do: <form = webForm> <p> _____________ textboxPeople| searchIcon //a text box to search an online phonebook at my company. ------------- //It has a little "magnifying glass" icon to search //(onClick), but I would also like them to be able to //search by hitting the "enter" key on their keyboards. </p> <p> _____________ texboxIntranet| searchIcon //Same as above search textbox, but this one is used if ------------- //the user wishes to search my corporate intranet site. </form> So ends the front-facing basic form that I would like to use. Now, onClick or onEnter, I would like the form to pass the contents of the text box used as well as an identifier such as "People" or "Intranet," depending on which box is used, to some basic JS on the back end: begin JavaScript: if(identifier = 'People') fire peopleSearch(); else if(identifier = 'Intranet') fire intranetSearch(); function peopleSearch() { http://phonebook.corporate.com/query=submittedValue //This will take the person //that the user submitted in the form and //place it at the end of a URL, after which //it will open said complete URL in the //same window. } function intranetSearch() { http://intranet.corporate.com/query=submittedValue //This will function in the //same way as the people search function. } end JavaScript Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance!

  • Text replacement for multiple script/config files

    - by user343804
I am doing some sort of science with a combination of Python, bash scripts and configuration files with weird syntaxes from old C programs. To run different tests, I have to tune (open text file, edit and save) a number of these files, but it is getting harder and harder to remember which files to edit. Also, the tasks are very repetitive and I end having a bunch of comment lines, switching on and off the settings for a specific run. I dream of a tool that can keep a list of files (regardless of the file format) and allow me to centrally choose from a predefined list of "profiles", taking care of editing the script/config files. For example lets say I have a config and script file: config.cfg var1 = 1.0 #var1 = 1.5 script.sct function(200.0) #function(300.0) I would like to instead have auxiliary text files: config.cfg.tem var1 = $$var1$$ script.sct.tem function($$par1$$) and in a central script or even better, a GUI, just switch from profile1 (e.g. var1=1.0,par1=200.0) to profile2 (e.g. var1=1.5,par1=300.0), and the tool to automatically update the text files. Any idea if such a tools exists?

  • innerText/textContent vs. retrieving each text node

    - by J-P
I've heard that using el.innerText||el.textContent can yield unreliable results, and that's why I've always insisted on using the following function in the past: function getText(node) { if (node.nodeType === 3) { return node.data; } var txt = ''; if (node = node.firstChild) do { txt += getText(node); } while (node = node.nextSibling); return txt; } This function goes through all nodes within an element and gathers the text of all text nodes, and text within descendants: E.g. <div id="x">foo <em>foo...</em> foo</div> Result: getText(document.getElementById('x')); // => "foo foo... foo" I'm quite sure there are issues with using innerText and textContent, but I've not been able to find a definitive list anywhere and I am starting to wonder if it's just hearsay. Can anyone offer any information about the possibly lacking reliability of textContent/innerText? EDIT: Found this great answer by Kangax -- http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1359469/innertext-works-in-ie-but-not-in-firefox/1359822#1359822

  • how to filter text of the selected value in drop down

    - by Carlos
I have a drop down menu. Has product types. Product types have associated value (from drop down) values correspond to machine groups. So each option should have three variables--Machine name, values, machine group. I can get the Machine name and I can get the machine value (and display them in a different field)...what I have not been able to figure out is how to change the value into the Machine group. jQuery('#MachineName').bind('change', function() { //get selected value from drop down; var selectedValue = jQuery("#MachineName").val(); //populate a text field with the selected drop down value jQuery("#MachineValue").val(selectedValue); What I would like to do is keep that MachineValue but then populate another text field with the sorted MachineGroup I have been trying to run it through something like switch(jQuery(this).val()){ case "236" : newVal = "8"; break; But I don't want to "change" the value I just want to do an "if then" type filter, so maybe something like: '236' => "8", '237' => "5", I just don't know how to properly say "assign the MachineGroup based on the MachineValue" (and then have it populate a different text field) In the end I would have three fields. The drop down, the MachineValue and the MachineGroup. Drop down and value are done, I just need to do Group. (And I can sort Group based on MachineName...just not sure which would be easier)

  • Assigning jQuery ajax response text to variable constanty returns null

    - by Dan Twining
Hi all, hopefully one of you on this great site can help. I'm having issues with assigning a variable to a jQuery ajax call response text. I have a form which when submited runs my "checkemail" function to varify the email address can be found in a database. If it's found, the responseText == "true", else "false". This works fine, and can be seen ok using Firebug....but the actual variable the response text should be assigned to is constantly showing "", and therefore causing the function to return false all the time. function checkemail(){ var EmailFromForm = $("#lostemail").val(); var EmailCheckRes = $.ajax({ type : "POST", cache : false, url : "./scripts/passreset/emailcheck.php", data : "Email="+EmailFromForm, dataType : "text", }).responseText; if (EmailCheckRes == "true") { alert("Should say true: " + EmailCheckRes); return true; } else { $("#ErrorMsg").html("Your email address is either invalid or not found."); alert("Should say false: " + EmailCheckRes); return false; } } If anyone has any pointers as to what i'm doing wrong it'd be greatly appreciated.

  • Limiting number of text lines in a table cell

    - by Kuzco
I have a table cell where I need to limit the text to a max of two lines. I tried achieving this by placing an inner div with a limited height: div { border: 1px solid #EECCDD; width: 100px; height: 40px; overflow: hidden; } <div> <p>bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla</p> </div> <div> <p>bla bla bla bla</p> </div> However, in this case the cells which have only one line of text are not vertically aligned to the middle. I know there are ways to vertically align a text within a div, but most of the ones I found seemed a bit complicated and/or hacky (like this one), and felt like a bit of an overkill. Is there a different way to effectively limit the number of lines inside the cell, or a simple way to align the text in the way I did it?

  • IE7 li with image and text issue - Text . Almost working.

    - by jmoore111
I'm using an unordered list. With an image to the left and text to the right. I only noticed today that IE7 was displaying this so badly that it wasn't even acceptable. Woops for not realising sooner. I have the given the image a class and the text wrapped in a seperate div. <ul> <li><a href="domain"><img src="http://www.domain.com/img.jpg" alt="img class="footer-thumb" width="40px" height="40px" /></a> <div class="recent-post-content"> <p>day date time</p> <p><a title="Content title" href="http://www.domain.com/contentitle &raquo;</a></p> </div></li></ul> What's happeninig so far is that it is perfect in every browser except in IE7 where the images are exactly where they should be but the class "recent-post-content" is all pushed up one exactly one image ([li] height) above so the last image doesn't have any text beside it and the first image ([li]) has its "recent-post-content" above it. I guess it's something simple but after getting this far on my own I thought it best to try and get some advice to fix the last little bit. Any ideas? Thanks

  • How to copy a text array to a series of cells in Excel

    - by aSystemOverload
I am dynamically creating a report, where I create a worksheet, bring in the records afresh. How can I easily type the field names and copy them to the cells. Without doing one cell per line, there are ~20 columns. I tried: dim fieldNames as variant fieldNames = ("'DS Date', 'A', 'B', 'A','S ASD', 'S','D S','D S', 'S','D S', 'SD', 'S','D'") Sheets("DATA").Range("C14:W14").Value = Application.WorksheetFunction.Transpose(fieldNames) But it just posts the whole thing in each cell? Any ideas?

  • How to extract terms from an HTML document

    - by bookcasey
I have a HTML document filled with terms that I need to put into a spreadsheet. They follow this basic pattern: <ul> <li class="name"><a href="spot.html">Spot</a></li> <li class="type">Dog</li> <li class="color">Red</li> </ul> <ul> <li class="name"><a href="mittens.html">Mittens</a></li> <li class="type">Cat</li> <li class="color">Brown</li> </ul> <ul> <li class="name"><a href="squakers.html">Squakers</a></li> <li class="type">Little Parrot</li> <li class="color">Rainbow</li> </ul> It's very consistent. I need to extract the string within the li.name a (so, "Spot") but only if the type is "Dog" or "Parrot", and put them in a spreadsheet. I've been trying to use Sublime Text's ability to Find with regex, but I'm really struggling, and since regex and HTML usually don't play nice, I was wondering if there is a better and easier way to accomplish this. Thanks.

  • How do you do a keyword search the Services.msc (mmc) window in Windows 7?

    - by Warren P
When you want to run a service, you have very limited capabilities, in all current Windows versions, as far as I can tell. I usually start Services by typing "services.msc" into the Start-Run box, on most versions of Windows, this works. I know how to click the "Name" column in the MMC view of Windows Services. If you know what the first few characters of a service name is, you can usually sort by the name, and type the prefix to scroll the list down (find Windows Search for example). This seems pretty weak to me, so I spent some time searching the interwebs for tools that do a better job of managing services. Usually I have a keyword that I know "fooWare" might be the keyword, and I need to find the (usually badly named) service and start it and stop it. This is often WAY too hard. The best I could do is "NET SERVICES" from the command line, and maybe add a grep in there, but that doesn't list every service, only a few of them. And the MMC snap-in in Win7 now has an Export List button, exporting to csv text file feature which I have used from time to time, to export and then search. I have thought of writing my own tool. I'm hoping a better "service manager" utility exists out there that sysadmins use. I'd like a search box at the top right corner, kind of the same way that the Add-Remove-Programs dialog in Win7 and Vista has a search facility. Does such a services utility exist out there?

  • Vim: auto-comment in new line

    - by padde
Vim automatically inserts a comment when I start a new line from a commented out line, because I have set formatoptions=tcroql. For example (cursor is *): // this is a comment* and after hitting <Enter> (insert mode) or o (normal mode) i am left with: // this is a comment // * This feature is very handy when writing long multi-line comments, but often I just want a single line comment. Now if I want to end the comment series I have several options: hit <Esc>S hit <BS> three times Both of these afford three keystrokes, taken together with the <Enter> this means four keystrokes for a new line, which I think is too much. Ideally, I would like to just hit <Enter> a second time to be left with: // this is a comment * It is important that the solution will also work with different indentation levels, i.e. int main(void) { // this is a comment* } hit <Enter> int main(void) { // this is a comment // * } hit <Enter> int main(void) { // this is a comment * } I think I have seen this feature in some text editor a few years ago but I do not recall which one it was. Is anyone aware of a solution that will do this for me in Vim? Pointers in the right direction on how to roll my own solution are also very welcome.

  • SQL SERVER – Guest Posts – Feodor Georgiev – The Context of Our Database Environment – Going Beyond the Internal SQL Server Waits – Wait Type – Day 21 of 28

    - by pinaldave
This guest post is submitted by Feodor. Feodor Georgiev is a SQL Server database specialist with extensive experience of thinking both within and outside the box. He has wide experience of different systems and solutions in the fields of architecture, scalability, performance, etc. Feodor has experience with SQL Server 2000 and later versions, and is certified in SQL Server 2008. In this article Feodor explains the server-client-server process, and concentrated on the mutual waits between client and SQL Server. This is essential in grasping the concept of waits in a ‘global’ application plan. Recently I was asked to write a blog post about the wait statistics in SQL Server and since I had been thinking about writing it for quite some time now, here it is. It is a wide-spread idea that the wait statistics in SQL Server will tell you everything about your performance. Well, almost. Or should I say – barely. The reason for this is that SQL Server is always a part of a bigger system – there are always other players in the game: whether it is a client application, web service, any other kind of data import/export process and so on. In short, the SQL Server surroundings look like this: This means that SQL Server, aside from its internal waits, also depends on external waits and settings. As we can see in the picture above, SQL Server needs to have an interface in order to communicate with the surrounding clients over the network. For this communication, SQL Server uses protocol interfaces. I will not go into detail about which protocols are best, but you can read this article. Also, review the information about the TDS (Tabular data stream). As we all know, our system is only as fast as its slowest component. This means that when we look at our environment as a whole, the SQL Server might be a victim of external pressure, no matter how well we have tuned our database server performance. Let’s dive into an example: let’s say that we have a web server, hosting a web application which is using data from our SQL Server, hosted on another server. The network card of the web server for some reason is malfunctioning (think of a hardware failure, driver failure, or just improper setup) and does not send/receive data faster than 10Mbs. On the other end, our SQL Server will not be able to send/receive data at a faster rate either. This means that the application users will notify the support team and will say: “My data is coming very slow.” Now, let’s move on to a bit more exciting example: imagine that there is a similar setup as the example above – one web server and one database server, and the application is not using any stored procedure calls, but instead for every user request the application is sending 80kb query over the network to the SQL Server. (I really thought this does not happen in real life until I saw it one day.) So, what happens in this case? To make things worse, let’s say that the 80kb query text is submitted from the application to the SQL Server at least 100 times per minute, and as often as 300 times per minute in peak times. Here is what happens: in order for this query to reach the SQL Server, it will have to be broken into a of number network packets (according to the packet size settings) – and will travel over the network. On the other side, our SQL Server network card will receive the packets, will pass them to our network layer, the packets will get assembled, and eventually SQL Server will start processing the query – parsing, allegorizing, generating the query execution plan and so on. So far, we have already had a serious network overhead by waiting for the packets to reach our Database Engine. There will certainly be some processing overhead – until the database engine deals with the 80kb query and its 20 subqueries. The waits you see in the DMVs are actually collected from the point the query reaches the SQL Server and the packets are assembled. Let’s say that our query is processed and it finally returns 15000 rows. These rows have a certain size as well, depending on the data types returned. This means that the data will have converted to packages (depending on the network size package settings) and will have to reach the application server. There will also be waits, however, this time you will be able to see a wait type in the DMVs called ASYNC_NETWORK_IO. What this wait type indicates is that the client is not consuming the data fast enough and the network buffers are filling up. Recently Pinal Dave posted a blog on Client Statistics. What Client Statistics does is captures the physical flow characteristics of the query between the client(Management Studio, in this case) and the server and back to the client. As you see in the image, there are three categories: Query Profile Statistics, Network Statistics and Time Statistics. Number of server roundtrips–a roundtrip consists of a request sent to the server and a reply from the server to the client. For example, if your query has three select statements, and they are separated by ‘GO’ command, then there will be three different roundtrips. TDS Packets sent from the client – TDS (tabular data stream) is the language which SQL Server speaks, and in order for applications to communicate with SQL Server, they need to pack the requests in TDS packets. TDS Packets sent from the client is the number of packets sent from the client; in case the request is large, then it may need more buffers, and eventually might even need more server roundtrips. TDS packets received from server –is the TDS packets sent by the server to the client during the query execution. Bytes sent from client – is the volume of the data set to our SQL Server, measured in bytes; i.e. how big of a query we have sent to the SQL Server. This is why it is best to use stored procedures, since the reusable code (which already exists as an object in the SQL Server) will only be called as a name of procedure + parameters, and this will minimize the network pressure. Bytes received from server – is the amount of data the SQL Server has sent to the client, measured in bytes. Depending on the number of rows and the datatypes involved, this number will vary. But still, think about the network load when you request data from SQL Server. Client processing time – is the amount of time spent in milliseconds between the first received response packet and the last received response packet by the client. Wait time on server replies – is the time in milliseconds between the last request packet which left the client and the first response packet which came back from the server to the client. Total execution time – is the sum of client processing time and wait time on server replies (the SQL Server internal processing time) Here is an illustration of the Client-server communication model which should help you understand the mutual waits in a client-server environment. Keep in mind that a query with a large ‘wait time on server replies’ means the server took a long time to produce the very first row. This is usual on queries that have operators that need the entire sub-query to evaluate before they proceed (for example, sort and top operators). However, a query with a very short ‘wait time on server replies’ means that the query was able to return the first row fast. However a long ‘client processing time’ does not necessarily imply the client spent a lot of time processing and the server was blocked waiting on the client. It can simply mean that the server continued to return rows from the result and this is how long it took until the very last row was returned. The bottom line is that developers and DBAs should work together and think carefully of the resource utilization in the client-server environment. From experience I can say that so far I have seen only cases when the application developers and the Database developers are on their own and do not ask questions about the other party’s world. I would recommend using the Client Statistics tool during new development to track the performance of the queries, and also to find a synchronous way of utilizing resources between the client – server – client. Here is another example: think about similar setup as above, but add another server to the game. Let’s say that we keep our media on a separate server, and together with the data from our SQL Server we need to display some images on the webpage requested by our user. No matter how simple or complicated the logic to get the images is, if the images are 500kb each our users will get the page slowly and they will still think that there is something wrong with our data. Anyway, I don’t mean to get carried away too far from SQL Server. Instead, what I would like to say is that DBAs should also be aware of ‘the big picture’. I wrote a blog post a while back on this topic, and if you are interested, you can read it here about the big picture. And finally, here are some guidelines for monitoring the network performance and improving it: Run a trace and outline all queries that return more than 1000 rows (in Profiler you can actually filter and sort the captured trace by number of returned rows). This is not a set number; it is more of a guideline. The general thought is that no application user can consume that many rows at once. Ask yourself and your fellow-developers: ‘why?’. Monitor your network counters in Perfmon: Network Interface:Output queue length, Redirector:Network errors/sec, TCPv4: Segments retransmitted/sec and so on. Make sure to establish a good friendship with your network administrator (buy them coffee, for example J ) and get into a conversation about the network settings. Have them explain to you how the network cards are setup – are they standalone, are they ‘teamed’, what are the settings – full duplex and so on. Find some time to read a bit about networking. In this short blog post I hope I have turned your attention to ‘the big picture’ and the fact that there are other factors affecting our SQL Server, aside from its internal workings. As a further reading I would still highly recommend the Wait Stats series on this blog, also I would recommend you have the coffee break conversation with your network admin as soon as possible. This guest post is written by Feodor Georgiev. Read all the post in the Wait Types and Queue series. I've just upgraded to the latest 12.10 beta. Rebooted twice. • To divide the big text into columns.

Problem: There is a big piece of the text: <div class="cont"> <p> Sed ut perspiciatis, unde omnis iste natus error sit voluptatem accusantium doloremque laudantium, totam rem aperiam eaque ipsa, quae ab illo inventore veritatis et quasi architecto beatae vitae dicta sunt, explicabo. On page it should be divided on two about identical (on height) columns. If it is possible: at change of the sizes of the container of the text, a column should remain identical height. Whether probably to set number "n" - on how many columns to divide the big piece of the text. That is to divide the text into any number of columns. Is available: php, xslt, css, pure javascript (without jQuey). What tool is better for using? As it to make, that the decision was ?ross browser compatible.

  • HTML overflow:hidden doesn't format text correctly

    - by Rens Groenveld
    I'm working on a website for an American Football team. They have these newsitems on their front page which they can manage through a CMS system. I have a problem with alligning the text inside those news items. Two of the news items look like this: As you can see, the right newsitem text are displayed nicely. But the left cuts it off really bad. You can only see the top half of the text at the last sentence. I use overflow: hidden; to make sure the text doesn't make the div or newsitem bigger. Does anyone have any idea how to solve this through HTML and CSS or should I cut it off serverside with PHP? Here's my code (HTML): <div class="newsitem"> <div class="titlemessagewrapper"> <h2 class="titel" align="center"><?php echo $row['homepagetitel']; ?></h2> <div class="newsbericht"> <?php echo $row['homepagebericht']; ?> </div> </div> <div class="newsfooter"> <span class="footer_author"><a href=""><?php echo get_gebruikersnaam_by_id($row['poster_id']); ?></a></span> <span class="footer_comment"><a href="">Comments <span>todo</span></a></span> <a href="" class="footer_leesmeer">Lees meer</a> </div> </div> And here is the CSS: .newsitem{ float: left; height: 375px; width: 296px; margin: 20px 20px 0px 20px; background-color: #F5F5F5; } .newsitem .titel{ color:#132055; font-size:1.2em; line-height:1.3em; font-weight:bold; margin:10px 5px 5px 5px; padding:0 0 6px 0; border-bottom:1px dashed #9c0001; } .titlemessagewrapper{ height: 335px; overflow: hidden; } .newsitem .newsbericht{ padding:5px 5px 5px 5px; font-size: 0.8em; margin-bottom: 5px; } .newsitem .newsfooter{ width: 100%; height: 25px; background-color: #132055; margin: 0px auto; font-size: 0.8em; padding-top: 5px; margin-top: 10px; border: 1px solid #9c0001; }

  • I'm trying to return text from a .txt file using ajax

    - by saad
    I'm trying to get my first ajax script to work. The five images are all side by side. Whenever the user hovers the mouse over any of them, it sends a request to a .txt file on the server and the caption is displayed in the div#image_caption. The problem is, even when I mouse over the image, the caption does not display. I'm not quite sure what could be causing this. Here is the code <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <style type="text/css"> div#images{overflow: auto;} img{float: left; width: 200px; height: 200px; margin-right: 15px;} div#image_caption {width: 1040px; height: 300px; margin-top: 30px; border: 2px black solid;} </style> <script type="text/javascript" src ="jquery-2.0.3.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { function show_caption(url) { //shows the caption once the mouse hovers over the image var asyncreq; if(window.XMLHttpRequest) { //IE 7+ and other browsers asyncreq = new XMLHttpRequest(); //define the request } else { //for IE 7- asyncreq = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } asyncreq.open("GET", url, true); //give it properties asyncreq.send(); //send the request to the server asyncreq.onreadystatechange = function() { if(asyncreq.readyState == 4 && asyncreq.status == 200) { $("div#image_caption").html(asyncreq.responseText); //add the caption (response text from the file) to the box } } } //end of show_caption(url) function hide_caption() { //hides the caption once the mouse is gone $("div#image_caption").html(""); } }); </script> </head> <body> <h1>Hover over an image for more information.</h1> <div id = "images"> <img src="images/backg.jpg" mouseover = 'show_caption("backg_caption.txt");' mouseout = 'hide_caption();'/> <img src="images/Desert.jpg"mouseover = 'show_caption("Desert_caption.txt");' mouseout = 'hide_caption();'/> <img src="images/Penguins.jpg" mouseover = 'show_caption("Penguins_caption.txt");' mouseout = 'hide_caption();'/> <img src="images/Tulips.jpg" mouseover = 'show_caption("Tulips_caption.txt");' mouseout = 'hide_caption();'/> <img src="images/odji1.jpg" mouseover = 'show_caption("Desert_caption.txt");' mouseout = 'hide_caption();'/> </div> <div id = "image_caption"> </div> </body> </html>
