• A question about entities, roles and interfaces in Entity Framework 4.

  Hi, I am an experienced .NET developer but new to EF - so please bear with me. I will use an example of a college application to illustrate my problem. I have these user roles: Lecturer, Student, Administrator. In my code I envisage working with these entities as distinct classes so e.g. a Lecturer teaches a collection of Students. And work with 'is Student' 'TypeOf' etc. Each of these entities share lots of common properties/methods e.g. they can all log onto the system and do stuff related to their role. In EF designer I can create a base entity Person (or User...) and have Lecturer, Student and Administrator all inherit from that. The difficulty I have is that a Lecturer can be an Administrator - and in fact on occasion a Student can be a Lecturer. If I were to add other entities such as Employee and Warden then this gets even more of an issue. I could presumably work with Interfaces so a person could implement ILecturer and IStudent, however I do not see how this fits within EF. I would like to work within the EF designer if possible and I'm working model-first (coding in C#). So any help and advice/samples would be very welcome and much appreciated. Thanks

• Where to give feedback on a new Feature is SO ?

  After using SO, for sometimes, i realize i got some problems. zen masters fighting each other on one of my question. Every side have their own arguments and Everybody seem right. Frankly, this make me confuse : How can i choose somebody's answer where personally i don't know the right answer. So, i would like to propose a feature 'i choose this because' for a user who asked. So at least he/she explain why he choose the particular answer. Maybe it's silly, but as somebody who getting helps from other's answer, i would like to know everybody get what they deserve. Usually in this kind of situation, i just upvote every good answer and check the one i think the right one. Second feature : every hot question always got plenty answer and comment. And if among person who answer it, start to debate then it will become a little bit hectic. Right now a page only have ability to sort answer based on oldest, newest votest. So, is it possible to make a new sort based on timeline what make comment and answer collide. I believe it will be more easy to read. this feature can only see by the person who create the question, or also for public.

• Referencing not-yet-defined variables - Java

  Because I'm tired of solving math problems, I decided to try something more engaging with my very rusty (and even without the rust, very basic) Java skills. I landed on a super-simple people simulator, and thus far have been having a grand time working through the various steps of getting it to function. Currently, it generates an array of people-class objects and runs a for loop to cycle through a set of actions that alter the relationships between them, which I have stored in a 2d integer array. When it ends, I go look at how much they all hate each other. Fun stuff. Trouble has arisen, however, because I would like the program to clearly print what action is happening when it happens. I thought the best way to do this would be to add a string, description, to my "action" class (which stores variables for the actor, reactor, and the amount the relationship changes). This works to a degree, in that I can print a generic message ("A fight has occurred!") with no problem. However, ideally I would like it to be a little more specific ("Person A has thrown a rock at Person B's head!"). This latter goal is proving more difficult: attempting to construct an action with a description string that references actor and reactor gets me a big old error, "Cannot reference field before it is defined." Which makes perfect sense. I believe I'm not quite in programmer mode, because the only other way I can think to do this is an unwieldy switch statement that negates the need for each action to have its own nicely-packaged description. And there must be a neater way. I am not looking for examples of code, only a push in the direction of the right concept to handle this.

• Creating collaborative whiteboard drawing application

  I have my own drawing program in place, with a variety of "drawing tools" such as Pen, Eraser, Rectangle, Circle, Select, Text etc. It's made with Python and wxPython. Each tool mentioned above is a class, which all have polymorphic methods, such as left_down(), mouse_motion(), hit_test() etc. The program manages a list of all drawn shapes -- when a user has drawn a shape, it's added to the list. This is used to manage undo/redo operations too. So, I have a decent codebase that I can hook collaborative drawing into. Each shape could be changed to know its owner -- the user who drew it, and to only allow delete/move/rescale operations to be performed on shapes owned by one person. I'm just wondering the best way to develop this. One person in the "session" will have to act as the server, I have no money to offer free central servers. Somehow users will need a way to connect to servers, meaning some kind of "discover servers" browser...or something. How do I broadcast changes made to the application? Drawing in realtime and broadcasting a message on each mouse motion event would be costly in terms of performance and things get worse the more users there are at a given time. Any ideas are welcome, I'm not too sure where to begin with developing this (or even how to test it)

• Performing a SVD on tweets. Memory problem

  I have generated a huge csv file as an output from my pos tagging and stemming. It looks like this: word1, word2, word3, ..., word14400 person1 1 2 0 1 person2 0 0 1 0 ... person650 It contains the word counts for each person. Like this I am getting characteristic vectors for each person. I want to run a SVD on this beast, but it seems the matrix is too big to be held in memory to perform the operation. My quesion is: should i reduce the column size by removing words which have a column sum of for example 1, which means that they have been used only once. Do I bias the data too much with this attempt? I tried the rapidminer attempt, by loading the csv into the db. and then sequentially reading it in with batches for processing, like rapidminer proposes. But Mysql can't store that many columns in a table. If i transpose the data, and then retranspose it on import it also takes ages.... -- So in general I am asking for advice how to perform a svd on such a corpus.

• Can I get the amount of time for which a key is pressed on a keyboard

  Dear all, I am working on a project in which I have to develop bio-passwords based on user's keystroke style. Suppose a user types a password for 20 times, his keystrokes are recorded, like holdtime : time for which a particular key is pressed. digraph time : time it takes to press a different key. suppose a user types a password " COMPUTER". I need to know the time for which every key is pressed. something like : holdtime for the above password is C-- 200ms O-- 130ms M-- 150ms P-- 175ms U-- 320ms T-- 230ms E-- 120ms R-- 300ms The rational behind this is , every user will have a different holdtime. Say a old person is typing the password, he will take more time then a student. And it will be unique to a particular person. To do this project, I need to record the time for each key pressed. I would greatly appreciate if anyone can guide me in how to get these times. Editing from here.. Language is not important, but I would prefer it in C. I am more interested in getting the dataset.

• How to handle people who lie on their resume

  I'm conducting technical interviews to fill a few .NET positions. Many of the people I interview really do know .NET pretty well, but I find at least 90% of embellish their skillset anywhere between "a little" and "quite drastically". Sometimes they fabricate skills relevant to the position they're applying for, sometimes they not. Most of the people I interview, even the most egregious liars, are not scam artists. They just want to stand out among the crowd, so they drop a few buzzwords on their resume like "JBoss", "LINQ", "web services", "Django" or whatever just to pad their skillset and stay competitive. (You might wonder if a person lies about those skills, whether they are just bluffing their way through a technical interview. My interviews involve a lot of hands-on coding and problem-solving -- people who attempt to bluff will bomb the hands-on coding portion in the first 3 minutes.) These are two open-ended questions, but it would really help me out when I make my recommendations to the hiring managers: 1) Regarding interviewing etiquette, should I attempt to determine whether a person really possesses all of the skills they claim to have? Can I do this without making the candidate feel uncomfortable? 2) Regarding the final decision, should I recommend candidates who are genuinely qualified for the positions they're applying for, even if they've fabricated portions of their skillset?

  Suppose I have a bunch of fruit: class Fruit { ... }; class Apple : public Fruit { ... }; class Orange: public Fruit { ... }; And some polymorphic functions that operate on said fruit: void Eat(Fruit* f, Pesticide* p) { } void Eat(Apple* f, Pesticide* p) { ingest(f,p); } void Eat(Orange* f, Pesticide* p) { peel(f,p); ingest(f,p); } OK, wait. Stop right there. Note at this point that any sane person would make Eat() a virtual member function of the Fruit classes. But that's not an option, because I am not a sane person. Also, I don't want that Pesticide* in the header file for my fruit class. Sadly, what I want to be able to do next is exactly what member functions and dynamic binding allow: typedef list<Fruit*> Fruits; Fruits fs; ... for(Fruits::iterator i=fs.begin(), e=fs.end(); i!=e; ++i) Eat(*i); And obviously, the problem here is that the pointer we pass to Eat() will be a Fruit*, not an Apple* or an Orange*, therefore nothing will get eaten and we will all be very hungry. So what I really want to be able to do instead of this: Eat(*i); is this: Eat(MAGIC_CAST_TO_MOST_DERIVED_CLASS(*i)); But to my limited knowledge, such magic does not exist, except possibly in the form of a big nasty if-statement full of calls to dynamic_cast. So is there some run-time magic of which I am not aware? Or should I implement and maintain a big nasty if-statement full of dynamic_casts? Or should I suck it up, quit thinking about how I would implement this in Ruby, and allow a little Pesticide to make its way into my fruit header?

• Binding Listbox item source to a collection of collections in windows phone 7

  Hi there, I am trying to bind a Listbox ItemSource to a collection of multiple Lists. i.e. List PersonCollection List Person List Collection Now I need to show items from both of these list. In wpf you could use HierarchicalDataTemplate i believe, but not sure how I can do it in windows phone 7. Tried with Blend and it generates the following data template. <DataTemplate x:Key="PersonDataTemplate"> <Grid> <StackPanel Margin="0,0,1,0" Orientation="Vertical" VerticalAlignment="Top"> <TextBlock Margin="0,0,1,0" TextWrapping="Wrap" Text="{Binding Person[0].Name}" d:LayoutOverrides="Width"/> <TextBlock Margin="0,0,1,0" TextWrapping="Wrap" Text="{Binding Collection[0].Total}" d:LayoutOverrides="Width"/> </StackPanel> </Grid> </DataTemplate> Is there another way I can do this? Cant find anything similar on the net apart from the confirmation that HierarchicalDataTemplate is not supported in Windows Phone 7. I have other ways to do but none elegant.. Thanks in advance.   I have a list of users users["pirates"] and they're stored in the format ['pirate1','pirate2']. If I hand the list over to a def and query for it in MongoDB, it returns data based on the first index (e.g. pirate1) only. If I hand over a list in the format ["pirate1","pirate"], it returns data based on all the elements in the list. So I think there's something wrong with the encapsulation of the elements in the list. My question: can I change the encapsulation from ' to " without replacing every ' on every element with a loop manually?   Hi there. I'm trying to write a simple program in Haskell that can determine someone's body mass index. Here's what I have written: type Height = Float type Weight = Float type PeopleStats = [(String, Height, Weight)] and... bmi :: Height -> Weight -> Float bmi heightCm weightKg = weightKg/(heightCm)^2 healthy :: Height -> Weight -> Bool healthy heightCm weightKg | 25 > index && 18 < index = True | otherwise = False where index = bmi heightCm weightKg So far, the function "healthy" can calculate someone's BMI, and the function "healthyPeople" returns a boolean statement determining if the person's BMI falls within the limits which is considered normal for a healthy person. I want to write a function called "healthyPeople". healthyPeople :: PeopleStats -> [String] This function needs to take a list of PeopleStats and returns a list of names (Strings) of people who are deemed to be "healthy" from the "healthy" function. For example: If I input [("Lee", 65, 185), ("Wang", 170, 100), ("Tsu", 160, 120)] I will get a list of the names of the people whose BMI returns true form the boolean function in "healthy". Please help !!!!

• How can I map to a field that is joined in via one of three possible tables

  I have this object : public class Ledger { public virtual Person Client { get; set; } // .... } The Ledger table joins to the Person table via one of three possible tables : Bill, Receipt or Payment. So we have the following tables : Ledger LedgerID PK Bill BillID PK, LedgerID, ClientID Receipt ReceiptID PK, LedgerID, ClientID Payment PaymentID PK, LedgerID, ClientID If it was just the one table, I could map this as : Join ( "Bill", x => { x.ManyToOne ( ledger => ledger.Client, mapping => mapping.Column ( "ClientID" ) ); x.Key ( l => l.Column ( "LedgerID" ) ); } ); This won't work for three tables. For a start the Join performs an inner join. Since there will only ever be one of Bill, Receipt or Payment - an inner join on these tables will always return zero rows. Then it would need to know to do a Coalesce on the ClientID of each of these tables to know the ClientID to grab the data from. Is there a way to do this? Or am I asking too much of the mappings here?

• In ASP.NET, is it possible to output cache by host name? ie varybyhost or varbyhostheader?

  Hi folks, I've got a website that has a number of host headers. Depending on the host header, the results are different - both visually (theme'd) and data. So lets imagine i have a website called 'Foo' - that returns search results (original, eh?). Now, the same code runs both sites. It is physically the same server/website (using Host Headers) :- www.foo.com www.foo.com.au Now, if i goto '.com', the site is theme'd in blue. if i goto the '.com.au' site, it's theme'd in red. And the data is different for the same search result, based on the host name (ie. us results for .com, au results for .com.au) SO .. if i wish to use OutputCaching .. can this be handled / differ by the host name? I don't want to have the first person goto the .com site .. grab the results ... and the a second person goto my .com.au .. same search data .. and get the theme and results for the .com site. Possible?

• Distinct or group by on some columns but not others

  I have a view that I'm trying to filter with something similar to DISTINCT on some columns but not others. I have a view like this: Name LastName Zip Street1 HouseholdID (may not be unique because it may have multiple addresses -- think of it in the logical sense as grouping persons but not physical locations; If you lookup HouseholdID 4130, you may get two rows.. or more, because the person may have mutiple mailing locations) City State I need to pull all those columns but filter on LastName,Zip, and Street1. Here's the fun part: The filter is arbitrary -- meaning I don't care which one of the duplicates goes away. This is for a mail out type thing and the other information is not used for any other reason than than to look up a specific person if needed (I have no idea why). So.. given one of the records, you can easily figure out the removed ones. As it stands now, my Sql-Fu fails me and I'm filtering in C# which is incredibly slow and is pretty much a foreach that starts with an empty list and adds the row in if the combined last name, zip, and street aren't are not in the list. I feel like I'm missing a simple / basic part of SQL that I should be understanding.

• looking for advise on importing excel into mysql with php

  Alright, see if I can pick your brains from you all. I'm currently working on a project where all the information comes from different clients, the only thing in common is that the received data is done with excel. The excel spread sheet that they present is just a bunch of references and codes, and the problem than I'm facing is that I need the references and codes to be entered in certain format in order for the website to work. The perfect situation will be to go to each client and teach how I would need the data, but I can't do that because of the large number of clients, and more importantly I will be interrupting their work flow. Each client has its own codes and reference model and they are not willing to change their process The good news is that there is a standard pattern for the codes, but I'm talking close to 200 thousand codes with a bunch of combination. They way that we are currently solving the problem is that we have a person who checks each excel sheet received, runs a few macros, and manually fixes those codes in which the macro was not able to fix. The person that is doing this, is already burn out and frustrated and I would like to automatize this process with php. Suggestions?

• Using java to create a logistic model - arrays and properties

  I'm currently trying to create a java model that will solve a problem we have. On a voluntary expedition each week we have some people leaving and some new people arriving. Accommodation is in tents. The tents sleep different numbers of people and certain rules apply. Males and females cannot be mixed and volunteers can be one of four types - school children/ research assistants/ scientific staff/ school teachers So types of volunteer and sexes cannot be mixed. Each week the manager spends hours trying to work this out so I've offered to make this model to keep my coding skills up. At present I'm working with arrays. Each tent is a 2D array [4][x] where x is the number of people it sleeps (each person sleeping there has 4 attributes). Each person is a 1D array with 4 attributes [4]. The idea is to check where people can go, cause the minimum movement for people staying on and solve this logistic problem. Does anyone have any better suggestions as to how to solve this? At present I'm finding it necessary to write a lot of code setting up and querying arrays. Any help is appreciated.

• Adding new records in Access without wrecking the form

  I'm working on a simple Access 2003 application to keep track of things that need to be done for clients for some colleagues. Each colleague has a set of clients, and each client has a set of actions that need to be taken by a certain date. I've set up a form that consists of a combobox for client ID (indexed), a drop-down for the person who is handling that client's case, and a button for adding new clients (a standard Access-created Add Record button). The actions are listed in a subform below these three elements. The problem I've run into is that the first person I tested this on clicked the button to add a new record, then didn't fill it out and tried to select another client from the drop-down list. Access interprets this as an attempt to set the selected Client ID as the ID for the new record and rightfully throws an error for duplicate primary keys. I can think of a couple of ways around this problem, but I'd much rather hear your elegant solutions than kludge together some junk in a language I don't know. Let me know if you have any questions. • Processing forms that generate many rows in DB

  I'm wondering what the best approach to take here is. I've got a form that people use to register for a class and a lot of times the manager of a company will register multiple people for the class at the same time. Presently, they'd have to go through the registration process multiple times and resubmit the form once for every person they want to register. What I want to do is give the user a form that has a single <input/> for one person to register with, along with all the other fields they'll need to fill out (Email, phone number, etc); if they want to add more people, they'll be able to press a button and a new <input/> will be generated. This part I know how to do, but I'm including it to best describe what I'm aiming to do. The part I don't know how to approach is processing that data the form submits, I need some way of making a new row in the Registrant table for every <input/> that's added and include the same contact information (phone, email, etc) as the first row with that row. For the record, I'm using the Django framework for my back-end code. What's the best approach here? Should it just POST the form x times for x people, or is there a less "brute force" way of handling this?

• Image is not displaying in email template on 2nd time forward

  Good day Friends, I've a mass mailing program with simple mail templates (HTML and few Images). I've a problem with image display. My clients are not getting images in the mail. Sometimes they get a mail with all the images, But if they forward the same email to someone else, they can’t get the images in forwarded mail. I really don’t know what’s happening with the approach., most of the cases the 2nd time forwarded mail is not showing the images properly. For example, consider I send a mail to client A, Here, Client A will get a mail with Images. Further, If Client A forward the same message to Person B then Person B is not getting Images in the Forwarded email. I’m using the following Approach to Embed an image in the mail template: StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(" <some html content> <img src=\"cid:main.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" usemap=\"#Map\"> </html content ends here>"); Attachment imgMain = new Attachment(Server.MapPath("main.png")); imgMain.ContentId = "main.png"; MailMessageObject.Attachments.Add(imgMain); Instead of attachment, I tried bypassing the Image path from server directly. How do I approach this problem? EDIT: The Error is: undefined method `base_class' for String:Class with params being: "speaker"=>{"speakable"=>"1063885469", "session_id"=>"1007692731"} The value passed to speakable is the id of the Speaker/Company. Yes, this is the value I specified the collection_select to return, but how can I manage to supply both values (speakable_id and speakable_type) ?

I believe the company has learned their lesson, and they have started a project of rewriting the CRM system to a modern platform. I have been hired to create a solution in the meantime to make adaptations to the CRM system. I have given up understanding the code, as this would take too long. My solution, is therefore, to make a window and show this on top of the CRM system, whenever this CRM system is showing. This part works fine, but my major problem is extracting the data from the CRM system. Proposed solution After excluding 6 approaches, including runtime code injection, memory searching, database integration, I have arrived at attaching to the process as a debugger, so I get notified about event, and use this in combination with reading from process memory. This approach seems to work, but I am worried about possible side-effects of this approach. Question What are the dangers of using this in a production environment, where there are 250 employees utilizing the system. Needless to say, I cannot risk reducing the already shaky stability of the system.

• Tips for using Subversion and XCode in a team project

  Hi to all. I've been working on an Xcode (iPhone) project with three different persons. We have the project on a Subversion repository, but we still don't completely understand some aspects of the Subversion + Xcode methodology: 1) Each time someone does a commit on a single file, it may appear or not in the project of the other developers. Even though the same person that creates the new files, it adds those files to the Repository and then it commits on those files. Why does that happens? Any suggestions? 2) Each person that is involved on the project can't do a "Commit entire project" without causing a considerable headache to the rest of the developers... any idea how this should be done?. The working methodology that we are trying to implement is that only one developer (generally the leader of the project) can Commit the entire project but he must inform the rest of the team, so everybody can be prepared to receive a message asking him to discard his changes and read the new files from the repository. I need suggestions or advice on how to handle a project with multiple developers using subversion. We have read the Subversion handbook, and many other messages on StackOverflow but I still can't find any useful advice. Thanks for any tip!

• SQL code to display counts() of value retrieved from another column

  I have three tables (these are the relevant columns): Table1 bookingid, person, role Table2 bookingid, projectid Table3 projectid, project, numberofrole1, numberofrole2 Table1.role can take two values: "role1" or "role2". What I want to do is to show which projects don't have the correct number of roles in Table1. The number of roles there there should be for each role is in Table3. For example, if Table1 contains these three rows: bookingid, person, role 7, Tim, role1 7, Bob, role1, 7, Charles, role2 and Table2 bookingid, projectid 7, 1 and Table3 projectid, project, numberofrole1, numberofrole2 1, Test1, 2, 2 I would like the results to show that there are not the correct number of role2s for project Test1. To be honest, something like this is a bit beyond my ability, so I'm open to suggestions on the best way to do this. I'm using sqlite and php (it's only a small project). I suppose I could do something with the php at the end once I've got my results, but I wondered if there was a better way to do it with sqlite. I started by doing something like this: SELECT project, COUNT(numberofrole1) as "Role" FROM Table1 JOIN Table2 USING (projectid) JOIN Table3 USING (bookingid) WHERE role="role1" GROUP BY project But I can't work out how to compare the value returned as "Role" with the value got from numberofrole1 Any help is gratefully received.
