I have 1.5 GB of RAM installed on an older Dell, Pentium 4. I just installed Ubuntu 9.1 and the system is only seeing 244 MB of RAM, even though there is 1.5 GB on the system. The BIOS sees all of it. I ran a Knoppix disc and it only saw 25 MB upon booting.
I made no particular changes to the installation taht would affect this. I looked through the BIOS and the only setting I could see was the AGP aperture. Not even sure what this is.
Anyone know where I went wrong?
I also tried moving the memory modules around on the board. Booted with the 1 GB stick, still saw 244 MB.
I'm having trouble finding PECL on a Mac OS X 10.6 machine. I'm using the default install of Apache and PHP for development and have installed MongoDB, however I can't work with Mongo/PHP without the mongo PECL extension.
Is there a copy of PECL on a Mac or will I have to install it? If so, where is it? If not, do you know of a good tutorial for getting it up-and-running?
I've tried the obvious stuff: sudo find / -name "pecl" -print returns nothing
Thanks very much

I can't seem to find a guide or reference on how to configure the 'indicator-applet' (aka MessagingMenu) that came about in the 9.04 release of Ubuntu. It's that little mail icon that lists messaging apps.
I can find docs about what it should do, people complaining about how it works, references that the API changed in 9.10, but not much on how to change the configuration.
The MessagingMenu design spec page says that the config file should be at $HOME/.config/indicators/messages/applications/, but there's nothing there on my install (9.10).
I need to run Firefox in my server in order to execute some Selenium tests from Hudson. I would love no to have to install a complete gui. So I installed Xvfb in order to fake the Gui (I understand it this way correct me if my assumptions are wrong).
After some time trying to make it work, I'm stuck with the next situation:
$ sudo Xvfb -ac :99 &

I'm runnig firefox without installing it from the repositories. And I'm getting a socket timeout when I try to run the selenium tests, so I guess the problem is in Firefox and Xvfb.
I have installed already the nex package:
i gconf-defaults-service - GNOME configuration database system (system defaults service)
That in some forums suggest to be a fix, that in my case doesn't work.
Any explanation about the problem and ways of solving it without installing a full gui, will be very helpful.
I was fooling around with my dual display setup (turned on my second monitor is almost all) and a handful of programs that were running seem not to be available anymore. Thunderbird, Gvim, Tomboy
ps shows them, but I can't see them. Can't cycle to them with alt-tab. They aren't just in some other window. I'm not even sure how to start figuring out where everything went.
Ideas?
I'm in a ssh connection and I would like to play a sound after a command completes (not on the server where I connected).
Something:
ssh [email protected]
make && play-sound-local
I have built-in pc-speaker disabled so echo -e "\a" doesn't work.
Any suggestions?
I'm attempting to install OpenSolaris 2009.06 on my server. Before I do I would like to test that everything works and am running in to problems.
It has an Abit AN-M2 motherboard with an NForce chipset. The driver config utility says that I need a third-party driver and links me to http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/. Scrolling to the bottom, I have downloaded both tgzs just in case.
Now the fun part: The only way to get this on to the computer is via a USB drive since I can't access the network. Also, install CD in the drive otherwise I'd just burn them to DVD. Since my USB key is NTFS formatted I cannot mount it since the install CD seems to be lacking NTFS drivers which require more downloaded packages.
What should I do?
The server will simply be a dumb NAS and I know that there exists other OpenSolaris-based flavors such as Nexenta but from what I read the stock install is likely the best. If this is not the case and pursuing a different flavor is required or better I will also accept that as an answer (but please don't jump straight to it).
Hi all,
Here are the specs beforehand:
ECS K7SEM motherboard
AMD Duron 900MHz
2x 256MB PC133 SDRAM
The Best Power MT-500P 500W PSU
Integrated graphics
No hard drive
DVD-ROM - will update with brand & model
Now, I was starting up this machine after it was left outside for 3 months in winter weather. (I got this from a friend.) I was able to get it started and tried to load Ubuntu from the DVD-ROM. It was fairly successful and got up to the point when the Ubuntu logo is glowing. However, when Ubuntu was about to go to the main screen, the computer crashed and automatically rebooted.
Is there any reason why this is happening?
Also, I should mention that when I try to hit Delete on the BIOS screen to go to Setup, it only shows a screen with four lines saying something Novell something... I will edit with exact lines.
Should I be resetting the BIOS or something?
Thanks in advance.
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 x64 recently. Up until now I've been on 32 bit Ubuntu. For the first time since installing it, I went and tried to play a Youtube video. There was no sound. So a quick test to the system reveals that nothing will play sound (And I've tried turning the volume too full, as some have said output is quite quiet, but there is no sound at all). Further research shows that in sound preferences, the only output device listed was Dummy Output.
Why would it work in 9.04 x86 and not 9.10 x64? While booting up, and occasionally with the sound preferences dialog open, I get a loud click (even though it isn't recognising my sound card).
It's a Dell Studio 17 laptop. I'm not sure what the exact model of sound card is.
The basic situation that I have is a dedicated server running CentOS 5.4 At the moment I have one VM running Ubuntu 9.0.4. Later on, I will want to add another VM running Windows Server 2003 but at the moment I am focusing on getting Ubuntu up and running.
The Ubuntu installation is working fine but I'm seriously struggling to get port forwarding working so that I can access websites to be hosted on the Ubuntu VM. As a newbie to Linux, I am confused about the relationship between IPTables and VMWare's own port forwarding.
Here's what I've tried so far.
The IP of my server is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and the provider support have told me that the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, the gateway address is xxx.xxx.xxx.1 and the network address is xxx.xxx.xxx.0. (Those latter two surprise me a bit, I expected private gateway/network address rather than public ones.)
First of all I tried Bridged Networking but had no success at all in communicating with the machine other than through the VMware console. I tried pinging it from the host (using ssh into the host) but no joy; also no Inernet access from the VM. I changed the interfaces configuration from DHCP to Static, using a static address of 192.168.1.100 and setting the gateway to xxx.xxx.xxx.1 as advised by the provider. No real difference, still cannot ping the guest from the host or vice versa and no Internet access from the guest.
Then I tried NAT. The host automatically set the IP address to 192.168.132.128 with a gateway of 192.168.132.2 Now the guest has Internet access out and when I do a VNC to the host and open Firefox with 192.168.132.128 I can see the hosted website okay but I still cannot get into it from outside.
I mentioned that I'm a bit confused about IPtables and VMware port forwarding, what I meant is that I'm not sure whether IPtable forwarding should be set to the IP address of the guest interface (192.168.132.128 in this case) or the gateway address 192.168.132.2 .
I have a feeling that I'm missing something very simple here, can anybody tell me what it is?
Every time you plug something in, like camera, iPod or SD card, the box pops up asking you what to do with that media. That box have a checkbox "Always perform this action". But how do I un-tick it?
Hi...i wanna list every file end at conf, and i wanna to copy to a file the results(with command find -exec)
I try this:
find -name *conf -exec /home/ubuntu/myfile
is this wrong?
I've been playing with a new SLR that also happens to record movies.
When I try to view a movie using Movie Player, it plays fine, and the sound is there, but the colors are off - green grass is purple, and my golden retriever is a blue retriever. VLC reports that the file is broken, offers to repair it, and plays it with the same problem.
The same file plays fine under WinXP with both Media Player and Quicktime, and with no problems under MacOS also with Quicktime.
What's the problem, and how can I fix it?
I have a broken AVI, it won't play in VLC, Xine or MPlayer.
I tried Handbrake (reads the file and resets the source to None), OggConvert, Avidemux and mencoder fail to read the file, I cannot seem to reencode this file.
I suspect the header info is corrupt, is there a way to get the a/v streams out with a missing header?
I was previously using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 and now using Ubuntu Karmic 9.10. I am somewhat offended by the memory tests at the Grub2 start-up ? Why are they there ? Do I really need memory tests at start up ?
I'm running Ubuntu Server 9.10 with Postfix and Webmin.
I have created virtual hosts for 3 domains following this serverfault.com answer.
But the mail isn't relaying out to the world. I have 3 domains tied into my DNS in webmin, as well as inside DNS clicked Mail Server and followed that instruction using this article on the web.
The domains and the web servers work just fine. I also have FTP working just fine. So, the remaining problem I have is mail. Can't forward mail out to a Gmail account for some reason. Note I'm just trying to do the "easy version" of Postfix config and if your answer is in Webmin-ease, that would help me. However, I can edit a text file if you suggest.
Is there a setting that I can configure to automatically scale large images like Firefox does?
I'm using Opera 10.53, and when I open a large image in a new tab, it is not scaled at all. I'm on a laptop, so it is hard to view, and when I am viewing multiple images, it is tedious to scale each image down to 20% or whatever fits it best.
I found this thread, and for a fleeting moment thought I had found the answer, but apparently not. They just told the poster to manually resize.
Thanks.
If I'm using Opera with the Opera Turbo feature turned on (always, not set to "automaticly"). Can anyone see what sites I'm visiting (except Opera of course ...)? Opera Turbo uses a proxy server, so it should be that way, but as a not very technical person I'm not sure.
Why do I want this? Well: nowadays, at least in my country, more and more (legal) open Wi-Fi connections are available. In those environments I like to have more privacy protections. I don't mind if they can see my IP address, but I just want to hide as much as I can of what I am doing.
BTW: I don't care that they can see the data transferred; it doesn't have to be that secret. I only want to hide the requested Internet site links.
BTW: I know that Opera Turbo only works with non-secure websites (HTTP), but that's fine for me. I only want it to work with these sites.
BTW: I'm not need this for illegal purposes; I only want this for privacy reasons.
I tried a little searching first before I came to ask in here. And I found this code, but I don't understand it.
sudo mkdir /mnt/usbdrv
sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbdrv
What is vfat? What is sda1 and what is -t?
How do I type this in order to be compatible with my flash drive?
