  • Computer hangs at BIOS screen. Cannot enter setup

    I have an HP Pavilion a6500f (it's a year out of warranty) and it's hanging on the blue HP BIOS screen. If I mash F10 while it's starting up, it will say "Entering Setup..." but I will see no results. It will hang there and not do anything. If I actually wait until I can see the screen and then hit F10, there's no response at all and the computer will sit at the BIOS menu. I've dusted and cleaned it out, reseated the memory, switched the RAM slots, and reset the CMOS battery using the reset jumper. I'm out of ideas. I'm pretty sure it's not a hard drive issue, since my problem is at the BIOS. After this post, I'll disconnect the hard drive and try to just boot without it. Anyone have any other ideas? Edit: Okay, so I tried disconnecting the hard drive and now I can get back into the BIOS. I reconnected it and I'm locked out again. So the problem is my hard drive.. I guess I should delete this post unless someone has any ideas as to what's wrong with the drive?

  • Ubuntu display warning before shutdown over ssh

    Ok I admit it... I stupidly shutdown my remote server via ssh instead of restarting it like I wanted to do :( To prevent me doing a silly again, is there a way to display a warning / confirmation on a shutdown command? (like "Are you sure you want to shut down this server?" yes/no ) OR, can I not allow shutting down (but not restarting because I still might need to do that from time to time) over ssh?

  • Computer randomly shuts itself off

    I have not been able to determine a pattern for why this happens, despite my best efforts. I've attempted to run it on full power with Prime95 and this doesn't trigger a restart. Generally the restarts occur while I'm playing games, watching videos, or even just having multiple tabs open in a browser. However, I often play processor intense games for hours without any restarts occurring, and sometimes they'll happen 3-4 times in an hour during less intense activity, so I don't think that is the problem. I imagine it has something to do with overheating or power consumption so I've been monitoring CPU temperature and cleaning with compressed air, but the problem keeps happening. I don't know how to track power consumption, and assume that this is the problem. Whenever this occurs, the sound gets stuck in a short loop of whatever was playing at the time, though restarts also occur when nothing is playing.   • Standing and sitting while using a computer at work

    I would like to be able to comfortably switch between sitting and standing while at work (I'm a software developer, so I spend most of my day in front of a computer). For the past couple of months I have been using a large elevated stand that sits on my desk (designed expressly for this purpose) containing my keyboard and mouse, and my monitors have been raised as high as possible and aimed upwards. So I can stand all day and I'm pretty comfortable (my right wrist may be at too much of an angle when it's on my mouse, but that's a separate issue). The only problem is that sometimes I want to be able to sit. I can easily place my keyboard and mouse back down under the elevated stand, but I have to look up pretty steeply and that is uncomfortable and makes it difficult to see the screens since they are tilted upwards. My monitor mounts are difficult to adjust quickly/easily, so I can't just re-aim them. I would of course love one of those hydraulic standing/sitting desks (cost isn't the problem). But I'm in a row of "trader-style" desks where it's basically a very long surface with people sitting at 6-foot intervals. What type of equipment do you recommend? I suppose the best thing would be some sort of monitor stand (it must be able to hold 2-3 LCDs) that can easily be lowered and raised. But any other suggestions are also welcome.

    I want to validate the current situation :- I have multiple users who have to use designing applications like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator etc and maybe some Mac specific applications like iWork and they need to be working on the applications in parallel. Can I setup a Mac Mini OS X Server and create separate user accounts and give to these users so that they can remote login to the OS X Server simultaneously from their Windows machines and use any application they want? In crux, can they share the server resources and applications from their windows machines?

  • Finding bluetooth link key in Win7, to double pair a device on dualboot computer

    How can I dig up the bluetooth link key for a paired device in Win7? Is this something that is dependent on the bluetooth stack I'm using (Toshiba), or is there a generic place to store these in Win7? Note: I'm not talking about the six-digit code usually typed by the user during pairing - that is worthless since it's discarded after pairing process. What I mean is the 128-bit link key that the devices exchange during pairing, and use thereafter to encrypt all their bluetooth traffic. Background: I dualboot Win7 / Ubuntu on my laptop, and I would like to have my phone paired to both OS's. Since the dualbooting computer has only one bluetooth adapter and thus only one bluetooth address, I cannot do two pairings to the phone, since on the second pairing (windows) the phone just replaces the previous pairing (linux) to the same bluetooth address. A thread on Ubuntu forums pointed me to what I have to do - pair first on linux, then on windows, and then replace the link key on linux side with the one windows negotiated. I can find the linux side pairing key from /var/lib/bluetooth/[BD_ADDR]/linkkeys - no problems there. However, on windows side I can't find the key. According to the forum post, on windows side the key should be in SYSTEM\ControlSet002\services\BTHPORT\Parameters\Keys\[BD_ADDR] but while that registry key does exist, it has no subkeys. (And a similar registry path in ControlSet001 didn't have any subkeys either.) One thing I've been instructed to do is to capture all events during pairing with Sysinternals Process Monitor. I did this, but I haven't been able to find any useful information from the captured events, not even by exporting the data to a huge XML and grepping that with the BD_ADDRs (with or without colons).   • Users take over a minute to log onto a 2008 windows server. LSM.exe running at 100MB+ memory.

    We've a 64bit Windows Server 2008 running Remote Desktop. The application lsm.exe (the local session manager) appears to be leaking memory. Although the memory usage is quite low when the server is rebooted, this continues to climb until people can no longer log in. The server has no audio card and does not have any AV software installed. The server is fully service packed. (Service pack 2) What could be causing this, and how would I fix it?

    I have couple of windows 7 entprise virtual machines in collection as part of VDI environment - so users connecting to them through RDS 2012 web site. Is there any way to fix resolution of remote desktops, that user receives (instead of full screen all time) ? I've tried different group policies, but none of them are worked, probably because all those policies are for RDS sessions and not virtual desktops ... And i don't know how to limit resolution locally on win7 machine itself, so connecting users will receive fixed resolution.

    Hello, We have English keyboards. I never saw any other keyboard in my life. I've been wondering for a long time. How do people in Korea, China, Russia, Muslim countries and some European countries where English is less known. Do they have keyboards in their native language? I mean are the keyboard directly manufactured in their native language. Or do they use some kind of keyboard mapping softwares to acheive the task. I've been searching in Google images to have a glance at their computers but didn't find any real key pads for computers/smartphones. If they have some non-English keyboard. Then how would they type web URLs? URLs possible in other languages also? If they have to type English URLs then it also means that they need to know English. I've seen in some movies that they have all their softwares, windows have text in their native language. How do they have some different language? I feel lost & confused. If you have any screenshots / pics of such non-english computer please post. I want to see one.

  • Setting up a virtual ftp directory that points to another computer

    I have II5 sitting on an old Windows 2000 Professional box. It has an FTP site there that allows me to access files. It works great, no problem at all. However, now I need to setup a virtual directory that points to a share on another computer on the network (running Windows XP Tablet Edition). The share requires a user name and password. The network is a simple workgroup (i don't have any domains or any of that). What is the correct procedure for that? I've tried setting a share via UNC and typing in the UserID/Password when asked. But when I finished, the virtual machine showed up as an error in the IIS Manager and couldn't access it. I mapped the share onto a drive and then tried to setup a virtual directory with this drive. Same result. Is there something simple I am missing? Would upgrading any part of the picture help at all?

  • VirtualBox OSE: Install Guest OS On Headless Host Via VNC?

    I've remotely installed VirtualBox OSE on my Gentoo box at home. I have everything set up and ready for the OS. However all the documentation I've read seems to say that you can only use the PUEL version in order to get remote access during installs - does anyone know if it's possible to do similar with the OSE but using VNC? Links to documentation or tutorials would be welcome, apparently my Google-Fu is failing me, if it's out there. Thanks.

I honestly don't know if this caused any damages or not. But it's prompted that /etc/ssh/sshd_config was stored as /etc/ssh/sshd_config.rpmnew which was quite normal. I've seen similar posts while googling, but almost all of them suggests that I should check /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny, which in my case, I can't. I can not connect to the box to see what's going on there. I rebooted the box, through web interface of server provider, and it even got worse.   • Corrupted Laptop - Transfer Data Without My Computer (explorer.exe) Using Command Line

    I have a laptop (Toshiba Satellite) that is pretty messed up. The person this belongs too already replaced it with a new machine. My job is to transfer all her data from this machine to disk so that I can transfer it to her. She doesn't want to lose any data (understandably so). Any operation I attempted (i.e., double clicking on any folder icon, like My Documents, My Computer, etc) resulted din a complete crash. The only good news is that I can actually start and navigate around using the command line. Also, I can access the internet. I have a network, so if I can map the drives I can get this thing figured out (hopefully). Also, I tried a USB drive but I couldn't figure out how to access it from the command line. Two questions (I need to use the command line for these): How would I go about accessing the USB drive and how can I map the shared drives on my network so that I may cd to that directory for use of the copy command?
