• What happens to an ActiveX control (COleControl) after the call to OnDestroy() ?

  I have an ActiveX control written in C++ that runs in Internet Explorer 8. Most of the time (approx 90%) when the tab or browser containing the control is closed, there is an access violation like this: The thread 'Win32 Thread' (0x1bf0) has exited with code 0 (0x0). Unhandled exception at 0x77b3b9fd in iexplore.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x65007408. The access violation occurs after the call to OnDestroy() but before the call to the control's destructor. The debug output says: No symbols are loaded for any call stack frame. The source code cannot be displayed. None of my code is present in the stacktrace, although perhaps the heap was corrupted at some earlier point during execution. What lifecycle events does an ActiveX control receive between the call to OnDestroy() and the control's destructor?

• cant populate cells with an array when i have loaded a second UITableViewController

• Ruby Rack: startup and teardown operations (Tokyo Cabinet connection)

  I have built a pretty simple REST service in Sinatra, on Rack. It's backed by 3 Tokyo Cabinet/Table datastores, which have connections that need to be opened and closed. I have two model classes written in straight Ruby that currently simply connect, get or put what they need, and then disconnect. Obviously, this isn't going to work long-term. I also have some Rack middleware like Warden that rely on these model classes. What's the best way to manage opening and closing the connections? Rack doesn't provide startup/shutdown hooks as I'm aware. I thought about inserting a piece of middleware that provides reference to the TC/TT object in env, but then I'd have to pipe that through Sinatra to the models, which doesn't seem efficient either; and that would only get be a per-request connection to TC. I'd imagine that per-server-instance-lifecycle would be a more appropriate lifespan. Thanks!

• UITableView via NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate, select first record by default?

  I have a UITableView that gets populated from CoreData via a controller that implements NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate. How can I have it automatically select the first row (and fire the tableView:didSelectRowAtIndexPath message)? The tableview is used for a variety of predicate queries, so I'm suspicious of solutions that work on the UIViewController lifecycle (viewDidLoad, etc), but I'm new to the platform, so I'm open. I've tried a variety of things, but I'm not sure where in the call stack to put it. I've tried calling cell.selected = true inside tableView:cellForRowAtIndex: method, but that just ends up turning the cell black (and doesn't fire the selected callback method) A tagent question, with all the delegating and core data protocols, does it imply asynchronous data fetch (multiple threads)? Or is the NSFetchedResultsController calling all its related methods in the same thread? Maybe I'm just scared that if it is async, there would be race conditions that would be tough to troubleshoot later.

• What's the official Microsoft way to track counts of dynamic controls to be reconstructed upon Postback?

  When creating dynamic controls based on a data source of arbitrary and changing size, what is the official way to track exactly how many controls need to be rebuilt into the page's control collection after a Postback operation (i.e. on the server side during the ASP.NET page event lifecycle) specifically the point at which dynamic controls are supposed to be rebuilt? Where is the arity stored for retrieval and reconstruction usage? By "official" I mean the Microsoft way of doing it. There exist hacks like Session storage, etc but I want to know the bonafide or at least Microsoft-recommended way. I've been unable to find a documentation page stating this information. Usually code samples work with a set of dynamic controls of known numbers. It's as if doing otherwise would be tougher. Update: I'm not inquiring about user controls or static expression of declarative controls, but instead about dynamically injecting controls completely from code-behind, whether they be mine, 3rd-party or built-in ASP.NET controls.

  Hello all, While nerding my way through the day again. I came across a problem concerning adding children to an already add child control. I can add the controls, but when trying to use the controls in the added control, they all return null. • WCF: Proxy open and close - whaaa?

  I am maintaing a windows form application using WCF and are using net.tcp internally. The lifecycle of our connections is GET/USE/CLOSE. We are having a problem with the application pool crashing with no trace. In looking at netstat, I can see when I come into the application as we have a login service. However, even though we are creating the proxy in a using statement, the connection in netstat does not go away until I physically close the application. Is this right? Should I be doing something diffent on the client to force the connection to close? So if the connection stays open, does it stay open for the duration of the openTimeout setting and then gets torn down? Thanks.

• Loading textures in an Android OpenGL ES App.

  I was wondering if anyone could advise on a good pattern for loading textures in an Android Java & OpenGL ES app. My first concern is determining how many texture names to allocate and how I can efficiently go about doing this prior to rendering my vertices. My second concern is in loading the textures, I have to infer the texture to be loaded based on my game data. This means I'll be playing around with strings, which I understand is something I really shouldn't be doing in my GL thread. Overall I understand what's happening when loading textures, I just want to get the best lifecycle out of it. Are there any other things I should be considering?

• Cant set drop down list selected value in page load

  Hi, I'm trying to set the selected value of a ddl during page load ie. before databind. This causes "selected value does not exist" errors. So I force a databind, and add a new element if it does not exist in the data source. However it looks like when the databind is performed later in the page lifecycle that my added element(s) are removed/overwritten. Am I setting the values in the wrong part of the life cycle? what I'm doing seems rather hackish and I think im going about this the wrong way... is there a better way to do this?

  I'm in the process of writing a DI framework for PHP 5, and I've been trying to find the 'official' definitions of some words in relation to dependency injection. Some of these words are 'context' and 'lifecycle'. And also, what would I call the object that gets created/injected? Finally, what is the difference between components and services, and which term (if either) should I call the objects that can be injected? I've read Martin Fowler's article and looked through other DI frameworks (Phemto, Spring, Google Guice, Xyster, etc.), but I want to know what you think. Thanks!

  I'm a bit late to the game and have decided to spend some spare time learning LINQ. As an exercise, I'm going to rewrite a WebForms app in MVC 2 (which is also new to me). I managed to find a few topics regarding LINQ here (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/16322/learning-about-linq, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8050/beginners-guide-to-linq, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/252683/is-linq-to-sql-doa), which brought the concern of Entities vs SQL to my attention. The threads are all over a year old however, and I can't seem to find any definitive information on which ORM is preferable. Is Entities more or less LINQ to SQL 2.0 at this point? Is it still more difficult to use? Is there any reason to use LINQ to SQL, or should I just jump into Entities? The applications I write at my present employer have a lengthy lifecycle (~10 years), so I'm trying to pick the best technology available.

• Forcing Flex to update the screen?

  This may be a bit of a beginners question, but I can't for the life of me figure it out. I'm using flex to develop a GUI for a large project, specifically a status bar along the bottom. Within my StatusBar class is a ProgressBar, which other classes doing work can tell to update(change bar completion and label) as they progress. The problem I'm encountering is that flex won't update whats shown on the screen until it's too late, for example ProgressBar initialized, 0% done some class sets the ProgressBar to be 12% done some class does some work some class sets the ProgressBar to be 56% done Whats happening is the 12% done is never displaying, it just hangs at 0% during the work, then skips right to 56% done. I've tried to understand the lifecycle of a flex component (invalidation and validation), and I think I understand it and am applying it correctly, but it's not working at all. I need to tell flex to redraw my StatusBar (or at least the ProgressBar within) after some class sets it to be 12% done, but before some class starts doing its work. How do I do this?

  Hi all, I am solving how to pass values from one page to another without making use of session scope managed bean. For most managed beans I would like to have only Request scope. I created a very, very simple calculator example which passes Result object resulting from actions on request bean (CalculatorRequestBean) from 5th phase as initializing value for new instance of request bean initialized in next phase lifecycle. In fact - in production environment we need to pass much more complicated data object which is not as primitive as Result defined below. What is your opinion on this solution which considers both possibilities - we stay on the same view or we navigate to the new one. • Best way to perform authentication on every request

  Hello. In my asp.net mvc 2 app, I'm wondering about the best way to implement this: For every incoming request I need to perform custom authorization before allowing the file to be served. (This is based on headers and contents of the querystring. If you're familiar with how Amazon S3 does rest authentication - exactly that). I'd like to do this in the most perfomant way possible, which probably means as light a touch as possible, with IIS doing as much of the actual work as possible. The service will need to handle GET requests, as well as writing new files coming in via POST/PUT requests. The requests are for an abitrary file, so it could be: GET http://storage.foo.com/bla/egg/foo18/something.bin POST http://storage.foo.com/else.txt Right now I've half implemented it using an IHttpHandler which handles all routes (with routes.RouteExistingFiles = true), but not sure if that's the best, or if I should be hooking into the lifecycle somewhere else?   Reading up on WCF we have self hosting option available , one limitation here is we have to manage the host process lifecycle ourselves. What I am exploring here is to run the service without IIS and do a self hosting. Few things come to mind - How will request management work here. In case of IIS it manages the request and give control to dotnet on a particular thread. In absence of IIS do we need to write code ourselves to manage incoming requests ( say on a tcp port ) or WCF provides some classes to manage request and spawn threads to process each thread. I am aware that in case of self hosting this needs to be a windows service. In case of self hosting how can me tap on the number of simultaneous requests on the sever , it can be managed by limiting the thread pool ? or we can configure this via wcf ? Thanks dc

  I have a threadsafe object that is expensive to create and needs to be available through my application (a Lucene.Net IndexReader). The object can become invalid, at which point I need to recreate it (IndexReader.IsCurrent is false, need a new instance using IndexReader.Reopen). I'd like to able to use an IoC container (StructureMap) to manage the creation of the object, but I can't work out if this scenario is possible. It feels like some kind of "conditional singleton" lifecycle. Does StructureMap provide such a feature? Any alternative suggestions?

  I'm developing a few custom ant tasks that all need to initialize the same objects. I wanted to initialize those object's in a common superclass that extends from Task, in the init() method. But I see from the lifecycle of an ant task that init() gets called before the tasks child elements and attributes are set. So all of the data I need for initializing those objects is unavailable during init(), if I am reading right. So, why is init() called at this point? What do you even know that you could use in init()? What could it be used for? (And is there some other method that I can rely on to be called before execute(), but after my data is available?)

  I'm using jQuery to wire up some mouseover effects on elements that are inside an UpdatePanel. The events are bound in $(document).ready . For example: $(function() { $('div._Foo').bind("mouseover", function(e) { // Do something exciting }); }); Of course, this works fine the first time the page is loaded, but when the UpdatePanel does a partial page update, it's not run and the mouseover effects don't work any more inside the UpdatePanel. What's the recommended approach for wiring stuff up in jQuery not only on the first page load, but every time an UpdatePanel fires a partial page update? Should I be using the ASP.NET ajax lifecycle instead of $(document).ready?

  I'd like to use FactoryBeans and scopes together. Specifically, I'd like the object created and returned by a FactoryBean to be placed into a specified (perhaps custom) scope. The issue is that doing the following: <bean class="x.y.z.TestFactoryBean" scope="test" /> Results in the FactoryBean itself being scoped, and has somewhat unpredictable behaviour on the object created by the factory. I understand why this is; the factory itself is a first-class spring-managed bean, and has its own lifecycle. However, I can't find a way to specify that the object returned from the factory should itself be scoped. • Android game goes blank after pressing home and restarting

  I am making an Android game with an Activity called Game, a SurfaceView called GameView and a Thread called GameThread. The Game's onCreate(), I make a new GameView, which makes a new GameThread, where all the game logic and canvas drawing is carried out. However, I'm having some lifecycle difficulties. When I press back and restart it, it works fine, but when I press home and restart it, all I see is a blank screen.   I wrote a simple test project, but I cant understand why I always receive savedInstanceState = null in lifecycle methods onCreate, onCreateView and onActivityCreated. I change the screen orientation, see the log, but state not saved. Tell me please where is my mistake. Thanks. • How do I get artifacts from one Maven module included in the resources of another in my build?

  I have Maven modules that produce a Flex application as an SWF file. I want to include that file in a web application that is made with another Maven module from the same build. I'm wondering how and at which lifecycle phase I get Maven to grab the artifact from the other module and put it insode the appropriate folder of the webapp module. Would I use a separate assembly module? The web app is running on a Jetty server in an OSGi environment (using Pax), the server side of the web app uses Struts. The final artifact as I see it would be a WAR file including my Action etc classes, JSP templates, static contents such as CSS or JS, and the SWF movies. I might be better off with these split over some other setup, but right now, I wouldn't know which.

• I have finally traded my Blackberry in for a Droid!

  Over the years I have used a number of different types of phones. Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Nokia, and now Android. Until the Blackberry, which was my last phone (and I still have one issued from my office) I had never found a phone that “just worked” especially with email and messaging. The Blackberry did, and does, excel at those functions. My last personal phone was a Storm 1 which was Blackberry’s first touch screen phone. The Storm 2 was an improved version that fixed some screen press detection issues from the first model and it added Wifi. Over the last few years I have watched others acquire and fall in love with their ‘Droid’s including a number of iPhone users which surprised me. Our office has until recently only supported Blackberry phones, adding iPhones within the last year or so. When I spoke with our internal telecom folks they confirmed they were evaluating Android phones, but felt they still were not secure enough out of the box for corporate use and SOX compliance. That being said, as a personal phone, the Droid Rocks! I am impressed with its speed, the number of apps available, and the overall design. It is not as “flashy” as an iPhone but it does everything that I care about and more. The model I bought is the Motorola Droid 2 Global from Verizon. It is currently running Android 2.2 for it’s OS, 2.3 is just around the corner. It has 8 gigs of internal flash memory and can handle up to a 32 gig SDCard. (I currently have 2 8 gig cards, one for backups, and have ordered a 16 gig card!) Being a geek at heart, I “rooted” the phone which means gained superuser access to the OS on the phone. And opens a number of doors for further modifications down the road. Also being a geek meant I have already setup a development environment and built and deployed the obligatory “Hello Droid” application. I will be writing of my development experiences with this new platform here often, to start off I thought I would share my current application list to give you an idea what I am using.
