• Rx IObservable buffering to smooth out bursts of events

  I have an Observable sequence that produces events in rapid bursts (ie: five events one right after another, then a long delay, then another quick burst of events, etc.). I want to smooth out these bursts by inserting a short delay between events. Imagine the following diagram as an example: Raw: --oooo--------------ooooo-----oo----------------ooo| Buffered: --o--o--o--o--------o--o--o--o--o--o--o---------o--o--o| My current approach is to generate a metronome-like timer via Observable.Interval() that signals when it's ok to pull another event from the raw stream. The problem is that I can't figure out how to then combine that timer with my raw unbuffered observable sequence. IObservable.Zip() is close to doing what I want, but it only works so long as the raw stream is producing events faster than the timer. As soon as there is a significant lull in the raw stream, the timer builds up a series of unwanted events that then immediately pair up with the next burst of events from the raw stream. Ideally, I want an IObservable extension method with the following function signature that produces the bevaior I've outlined above. Now, come to my rescue StackOverflow :) public static IObservable<T> Buffered(this IObservable<T> src, TimeSpan minDelay) PS. I'm brand new to Rx, so my apologies if this is a trivially simple question... 1. Simple yet flawed approach Here's my initial naive and simplistic solution that has quite a few problems: public static IObservable<T> Buffered<T>(this IObservable<T> source, TimeSpan minDelay) { Queue<T> q = new Queue<T>(); source.Subscribe(x => q.Enqueue(x)); return Observable.Interval(minDelay).Where(_ => q.Count > 0).Select(_ => q.Dequeue()); } The first obvious problem with this is that the IDisposable returned by the inner subscription to the raw source is lost and therefore the subscription can't be terminated. Calling Dispose on the IDisposable returned by this method kills the timer, but not the underlying raw event feed that is now needlessly filling the queue with nobody left to pull events from the queue. The second problem is that there's no way for exceptions or end-of-stream notifications to be propogated through from the raw event stream to the buffered stream - they are simply ignored when subscribing to the raw source. And last but not least, now I've got code that wakes up periodically regardless of whether there is actually any work to do, which I'd prefer to avoid in this wonderful new reactive world. 2. Way overly complex appoach To solve the problems encountered in my initial simplistic approach, I wrote a much more complicated function that behaves much like IObservable.Delay() (I used .NET Reflector to read that code and used it as the basis of my function). Unfortunately, a lot of the boilerplate logic such as AnonymousObservable is not publicly accessible outside the system.reactive code, so I had to copy and paste a lot of code. This solution appears to work, but given its complexity, I'm less confident that its bug free. I just can't believe that there isn't a way to accomplish this using some combination of the standard Reactive extensions. I hate feeling like I'm needlessly reinventing the wheel, and the pattern I'm trying to build seems like a fairly standard one.

• IIS: No Session being handed out, but only in production

  I've reproduced this in a simple project - details below. It's a WCF service in ASP.NET compatibility mode. What I'm seeing is that when run on the dev machine (Win7), a HTTP session id is available inside the service operation (HttpContext.Current.Session is non-null). But when deployed to the server (Win2k8R2), I get "No session". On both machines the app is configured to use the classic app pool, and the app pools themselves are configured identically as far as I can tell. The only differences I can discern between the two applications is that on the dev box, under "Handler Mappings", ISAPI-dll is disabled (not on the server), and on the server there's a spurious handler called "AboMapperCustom-7105160" (does not exist on the dev box). What should I be looking at next? Am I missing something head-slappingly simple? • ASP.NET SQLMembership Provider not logging in

  My web app uses the sql memebership provider. Running it locally all is well, deploying to a dev server it works fine too in firefox, but in IE8 something unexpected is happening. Once a user logs in they're supposed to be redirected to home.aspx. What's happening when I attempt to login is it appears to accept the login credentials but then doesn't redirect to home.aspx. Instead it just redirects me to the login page as though I had attempted to access home.aspx directly without being logged in. The url parameter ReturnUrl is appended, Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fhome.aspx Why is this only happening with IE8? My local PC is IIS7 but the server is IIS6. • Ruby On Rails with HTML5 offline apps - Firefox does not cache the application.manifest but Safari does

  I'm working off of this Railscast tutorial: episode 247 I’m up to this point in the tutorial: added the rack-offline gem, added the application.manifest route, and added a reference to the manifest in the html tag. Right before it starts talking about problems with caching. Safari works as intended – When the server is running the page is served. From the server logs I can see that Safari is making a single request to the server every time for the items page. When I turn off the server the page displays as well, even after shutting down the browser and restarting. It appears to be pulling from the application.manifest (cache manifest). Firefox does not work as intended – When accessing the page for the first time, Firefox lets me know that the web page wants to store something locally, I allow. After clicking on allow, Firefox makes 5 requests to the server for the page (from the server log). The hash is different in every request. Is it is possible that the changing hash is triggering Firefox to keep trying to get the new manifest until it reaches some maximum (5 attempts)? Then, after the server is stopped, Firefox will not show the page at all. It looks like it isn’t caching the application.manifest. Firefox also gives you a way to see what sites are storing stuff locally by going to Tools/Options/Advanced/Network (Firefox/Preferences/Advanced/Network on Apple). I see localhost there but the size is 0 bytes. So for some reason, Firefox is not downloading my application.manifest along with the files

• jQuery - window focus, blur events not triggering - works in Firefox and Chrome

  In a nutshell; I wrote a simplistic chat application for a buddy and me to use. When the window running the application does not have the focus (minimized or behind other windows) and a message comes in, I want to change the windows title bar to serve as an alert. Exactly like Google's chat application does in GMail. Everything works flawlessly in Firefox and Chrome but not in IE7 (haven't tested 8). This is the code I am using to determine if the window has focus. Can this be written differently to also work in IE? Also, I'm open to any other approaches to accomplish the same thing. • The width of items in select box is different in IE 8, Firefox and Google Chrome

Each browser is treating it differently. I can see a shrink of the select box items in IE 8. Whereas google chrome and firefox takes the maximum width of the items in the select box. • Dojo Table not Rendering in IE6

  I'm trying to use Dojo (1.3) checkBoxes to make columns appear/hide in a Dojo Grid that's displayed below the checkBoxes. I got that functionality to work fine, but I wanted to organize my checkBoxes a little better. So I tried putting them in a table. • Google Maps API Geocode gives error "Invalid label" in Firefox

  Hi, this code in my plugin used to work just fine: jQuery('#embedded_obj', context).get(0).getVersion(); and in html... <object id="embedded_obj" type="application/x-versionchecker-1.0.0.1"</object Basically trying to get the properties from an embedded object. But it looks like get(0) is returning an html object instead of the actual embedded object. For example, if I do: var launcher = jQuery('#embedded_obj', context).get(0); for(prop in launcher){ alert(prop + ': ' + launcher[prop]); } ... it alerts things like "getElementByNode," "scrollWidth," "clientLeft," "clientTop" etc. Again this worked before Firefox 3.6. Has anyone else seen this or have any ideas/suggestions? Thanks!

• Unique element ID, even if element doesn't have one

  I'm writing a GreaseMonkey script where I'm iterating through a bunch of elements. For each element, I need a string ID that I can use to reference that element later. The element itself doesn't have an id attribute, and I can't modify the original document to give it one (although I can make DOM changes in my script). I can't store the references in my script because when I need them, the GreaseMonkey script itself will have gone out of scope. Is there some way to get at an "internal" ID that the browser uses, for example? A Firefox-only solution is fine; a cross-browser solution that could be applied in other scenarios would be awesome. Edit: If the GreaseMonkey script is out of scope, how are you referencing the elements later? They GreaseMonkey script is adding events to DOM objects. I can't store the references in an array or some other similar mechanism because when the event fires, the array will be gone because the GreaseMonkey script will have gone out of scope. So the event needs some way to know about the element reference that the script had when the event was attached. And the element in question is not the one to which it is attached. Can't you just use a custom property on the element? Yes, but the problem is on the lookup. I'd have to resort to iterating through all the elements looking for the one that has that custom property set to the desired id. That would work, sure, but in large documents it could be very time consuming. I'm looking for something where the browser can do the lookup grunt work. Wait, can you or can you not modify the document? I can't modify the source document, but I can make DOM changes in the script. I'll clarify in the question. Can you not use closures? Closuses did turn out to work, although I initially thought they wouldn't. See my later post. It sounds like the answer to the question: "Is there some internal browser ID I could use?" is "No."
