  • How to count the length (number of lines) of a csv file in Rails?

    Hello, I have a form (Rails) which allows me to load a .csv file using the file_field. In the view: <% form_for(:upcsv, :html => {:multipart => true}) do |f| %> <table> <tr> <td><%= f.label("File:") %></td> <td><%= f.file_field(:filename) %></td> </tr> </table> <%= f.submit("Submit") %> <% end %> Clicking Submit redirects me to another page (create.html.erb). The file was loaded fine, and I was able to read the contents just fine in this second page. I am trying to show the number of lines in the .csv file in this second page. My controller (semi-pseudocode): class UpcsvController < ApplicationController def index end def create file = params[:upcsv][:filename] ... #params[:upcsv][:file_length] = file.length # Show number of lines in the file #params[:upcsv][:file_length] = file.size ... end end Both file.length and file.size returns '91' when my file only contains 7 lines. From the Rails documentation that I read, once the Submit button is clicked, Rails creates a temp file of the uploaded file, and the params[:upcsv][:filename] contains the contents of the temp/uploaded file and not the path to the file. And I don't know how to extract the number of lines in my original file. What is the correct way to get the number of lines in the file? My create.html.erb: <table> <tr> <td>File length:</td> <td><%= params[:upcsv][:file_length] %></td> </tr> </table> I'm really new at Rails (just started last week), so please bear with my stupid questions. For my code, what i wish to do is permutation count. it will count from top to bottom 1,2,3 1,2,3 1,2,3 output to 111 = 1 112 = 1 113 = 1 121 = 1 122 = 1 123 = 1 133 = 1 211 = 1 212 = 1 213 = 1 333 = 1 and continue till all number is count and also store to the array which can check how many count after all code will check the input number and count how many outcome and show the results with how many outcome and each have how many after permutation count. Its hard to do?. Anyway thank you for help.

    I am parsing a very large file of records (one per line, each of varying length), and I'd like to keep track of the number of bytes I've read in the file so that I may recover in the event of a failure. I wrote the following: string record = myTextReader.ReadLine(); bytesRead += record.Length; ParseRecord(record); However this doesn't work since ReadLine() strips any CR/LF characters in the line. Furthermore, a line may be terminated by either CR, LF, or CRLF characters, which means I can't just add 1 to bytesRead. Is there an easy way to get the actual line length, or do I write my own ReadLine() method in terms of the granular Read() operations?

    They usually involve generics. But some methods with generics don't have them, and not all extension methods have them. They've just "been there" since day one, we've all seen them; but I realized I still don't know what they mean, and I can't find the answer anywhere. Now it's really bugging me. Google just turns up results that are about XML, etc. Is this officially documented anywhere? Thanks. EDIT: Well that's just great. Since I just created an account to make my first Stack Overflow post, to get an answer for this burning question; I'm not allowed to post my pretty Intellisense picture, or create a new tag "angle-brackets".   • C++: How to count all instantiated objects at runtime?

    I have a large framework consisting of many C++ classes. Is there a way using any tools at runtime, to trace all the C++ objects that are being constructed and currently exist? For example, at a certain time t1, perhaps the application has objects A1, A2 and B3, but at time t2, it has A1, A4, C2 and so on? This is a cross platform framework but I'm familiar with working in Linux, Solaris and (possibly) Mac OS X.

  • Turing's Craft exercise stumped me... seems too easy.

    "Write a for loop that prints the integers 1 through 40, separated by spaces or new lines. You may use only one variable, count which has already been declared as an integer." So I use... for(count = 1; count <= 40; count++) { cout << " " << count; } but they are using stdio.h as the only header and cout is not recognized. It hints that the output format should be (" ",count), but I can't figure out what print function to use. stdio.h can use fprintf or fwrite, but I don't have enough parameters for either function. Any ideas?

  • Psycopg2 doesn't like table names that start with a lower case letter

    I am running ActiveState's ActivePython 2.6.5.12 and PostgreSQL 9.0 Beta 1 under Windows XP. If I create a table with an upper case first letter (i.e. Books), psycopg2 returns the "Programming Error: relation "books" does not exist" error message when I run the select statement: execute("SELECT * FROM Books"). The same error is returned if I run: execute("SELECT * FROM books"). However, if I change the table to a lower case first name (i.e. books), then either of the above statements works. Are tables name supposed to have a lower case first name? Is this a setting or a feature or a bug? Am I missing something obvious?

  • Does Postgresql varchar count using unicode character length or ASCII character length?

    I tried importing a database dump from a SQL file and the insert failed when inserting the string Mér into a field defined as varying(3). I didn't capture the exact error, but it pointed to that specific value with the constraint of varying(3). Given that I considered this unimportant to what I was doing at the time, I just changed the value to Mer, it worked, and I moved on. Is a varying field with its limit taking into account length of the byte string? What really boggles my mind is that this was dumped from another PostgreSQL database. So it doesn't make sense how a constraint could allow the value to be written initially.

    I have a data structure with 15 unsigned longs, I have defined a hash function using hash_combine as follows: friend std::size_t hash_value(const TUPLE15& given) { std::size_t seed = 0; boost::hash_combine(seed, val1); boost::hash_combine(seed, val2); ... return seed; } I insert a large number of values into a boost::unordered_map but the performance is not good enough. Probably, I could do better with an alternative hashing function. To confirm this, I need to check how many collisions I am getting. How do I do this?

  • Regular Expression; Find whether a line contains any word with more than X characters.

    Hi, I am trying to use a Validator on a ASP.NET site and need to find whether the Street Address textbox contains a valid entry. Entries with words that are longer than X characters (in this case 25, with no punctuation or spaces) will cause the HTML on a printed A4 page to not wrap properly and therefore not to confrom to certain sizes correctly pushing the margins off. For a street address I want to match that something like "201 Long Road" is valid but "235 ReallyLongAndNarrowWindingRoadBesideTheRiver Street" is invalid. Using a Microsoft .Net Regular Expression Validator I need to know what the RegEx pattern might be. I think if it does find a match the Validator will fire correctly however if there is no match the Validator won't fire and the Update button (in this case) won't fire. Since Street addresses can contain Capital Letters and numbers etc. it will need to accomodate for that and also Spaces, Commas, Semi-Colons and Colons and Hyphens are valid characters too. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am really stuck with this problem. Thanks, David

    I am trying to get the Count of all records that have at least on person who is authorized on the record. Basically, a Record can have more than one person associated with it. I want to return the count of Total Records, a count of total Authorized Records where at least 1 person is authorized, and a count of total NotAuthorized records where no person associated with record is authorized. It doesn't matter if one person is authorized per Record or if 3 people are authorized for that record, that should add 1 to the Authorized counter. The current query is incrementing Auth and Non auth for each person added per record rather, than one per record. If no people are assigned to the record that should also count towards Not Auth.
