  • Monaco font not antialiased in some GTK apps

    - by Bartosz Radaczynski
I have a strange issue with the Monaco font on Ubuntu Karmic. I have recently installed the Monaco font just to see what the hype is all about. The problem that I am facing now is that is not antialiased in some GTK apps (namely in Firefox and Eclipse), but it is antialiased in KDE apps (konsole) and in Chromium. I have hinting set to slight. Any help is appreciated.

  • Ubuntu 9.10 Technika H16WC-01 Webcam

    - by user32976
I know this is a lame cheap web camera, thus making it all the harder for me to find information about it. Ubuntu seems to recognise it, putting it in as /dev/video0 Skype is able to see that the web cam is there, but can not get any picture data. Flash doesn't even pick up that the web cam exists. I feel foolish asking such a lame question... but any help will be cool beans!

  • Disabling Keyboard Wakeup for Ubuntu 10.04 on Acer 1810TZ

    - by sybreon
My Acer Aspire 1810TZ laptop suspends fine but wakes up on any slight key-press. I would like to disable this behaviour. • Updates broke my themes/shell [Ubuntu 12.04 running Gnome 3 ]

    - by APNW
    I am running gnome-session 3.4.2.1. After the latest updates (listed below) my theme regressed to what looks like tango - not sure. Am unable to change it using Gnome-tweak tool or the display settings. I am also unable to change the wallpaper. Here's what it looks like: Synaptic: Chromium and this is the wallpaper page even though I have selected the wallpaper, it actually does not change. This same problem occurred on my personal computer, and one other computer I have, all running the same software/config. The interesting thing is that while Gnome 3 and Unity are affected, Cinnamon is not. What I've done so far: purged and re-installed both gnome 3 and Unity- no change noted. So, how do I fix this? Thanks Here's the installation log: Start-Date: 2013-11-07 12:01:28 Upgrade: chromium-browser-l10n:i386 (28.0.1500.71-0ubuntu1.12.04.1, 30.0.1599.114-0ubuntu0.12.04.3), libswscale2:i386 (0.8.6-0ubuntu0.12.04.1, 0.8.8-0ubuntu0.12.04.1), chromium-codecs-ffmpeg:i386 (28.0.1500.71-0ubuntu1.12.04.1, 30.0.1599.114-0ubuntu0.12.04.3), chromium-browser:i386 (28.0.1500.71-0ubuntu1.12.04.1, 30.0.1599.114-0ubuntu0.12.04.3), libpostproc52:i386 (0.8.6-0ubuntu0.12.04.1, 0.8.8-0ubuntu0.12.04.1), libavcodec-extra-53:i386 (0.8.6ubuntu0.12.04.1, 0.8.8ubuntu0.12.04.1), libavformat53:i386 (0.8.6-0ubuntu0.12.04.1, 0.8.8-0ubuntu0.12.04.1), libavutil-extra-51:i386 (0.8.6ubuntu0.12.04.1, 0.8.8ubuntu0.12.04.1) End-Date: 2013-11-07 12:02:00 Start-Date: 2013-11-07 17:32:55 Commandline: aptdaemon role='role-commit-packages' sender=':1.136' Install: libmusicbrainz5-0:i386 (5.0.1-2~precise2), udisks2:i386 (1.98.0-1~precise1), libclutter-gst-1.0-0:i386 (1.5.4-0ubuntu2), libudisks2-0:i386 (1.98.0-1~precise1), cinnamon-session-common:i386 (2.0.4-20131105043005-precise), librhythmbox-core6:i386 (2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), gcr:i386 (3.4.1-3~precise1), libcluttergesture-0.0.2-0:i386 (0.0.2.1-2ubuntu3), libmx-1.0-2:i386 (1.4.3-0ubuntu1), guile-2.0-libs:i386 (2.0.5+1-1), libclutter-imcontext-0.1-0:i386 (0.1.4-2build1), libnatpmp1:i386 (20110808-3ubuntu1) Upgrade: gnome-keyring:i386 (3.2.2-2ubuntu4.1, 3.4.1-4ubuntu1~precise1), cinnamon:i386 (2.0.6-20131026040307-precise, 2.0.10-20131105040309-precise), gir1.2-muffin-3.0:i386 (2.0.3-20131023003029-precise, 2.0.3-20131105003012-precise), gir1.2-totem-1.0:i386 (3.0.1-0ubuntu21.1, 3.4.3-0ubuntu1~precise1), nemo:i386 (2.0.2-20131023010018-precise, 2.0.5-20131105010007-precise), aisleriot:i386 (3.2.3.2-0ubuntu1, 3.4.1-1~precise1), procps:i386 (3.2.8-11ubuntu6.2, 3.2.8-11ubuntu6.3), libcinnamon-desktop0:i386 (2.0.2-20131025011504-precise, 2.0.3-20131105011505-precise), libgck-1-0:i386 (3.2.2-2ubuntu4.1, 3.4.1-3~precise1), totem-plugins:i386 (3.0.1-0ubuntu21.1, 3.4.3-0ubuntu1~precise1), cinnamon-desktop-data:i386 (2.0.2-20131025011504-precise, 2.0.3-20131105011505-precise), rhythmbox:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), libgcr-3-1:i386 (3.2.2-2ubuntu4.1, 3.4.1-3~precise1), seahorse:i386 (3.2.2-0ubuntu2.1, 3.4.1-2~precise1), muffin-common:i386 (2.0.3-20131023003029-precise, 2.0.3-20131105003012-precise), totem-common:i386 (3.0.1-0ubuntu21.1, 3.4.3-0ubuntu1~precise1), libtotem0:i386 (3.0.1-0ubuntu21.1, 3.4.3-0ubuntu1~precise1), rhythmbox-data:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), gir1.2-cinnamondesktop-3.0:i386 (2.0.2-20131025011504-precise, 2.0.3-20131105011505-precise), cinnamon-session:i386 (2.0.1-20131021043004-precise, 2.0.4-20131105043005-precise), rhythmbox-mozilla:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), rhythmbox-plugin-zeitgeist:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), libmuffin0:i386 (2.0.3-20131023003029-precise, 2.0.3-20131105003012-precise), cjs:i386 (2.0.0-20131021020602-precise, 2.0.0-20131105020703-precise), rhythmbox-plugin-cdrecorder:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), cinnamon-common:i386 (2.0.6-20131026040307-precise, 2.0.10-20131105040309-precise), gnome-disk-utility:i386 (3.0.2-2ubuntu7, 3.4.1-0ubuntu1~precise1), nemo-fileroller:i386 (2.0.0-20131021020004-precise, 2.0.0-20131105020003-precise), libnemo-extension1:i386 (2.0.2-20131023010018-precise, 2.0.5-20131105010007-precise), rhythmbox-plugins:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), gimp:i386 (2.8.6-0precise1~ppa, 2.8.8-0precise0~ppa), cinnamon-settings-daemon:i386 (2.0.5-20131026004504-precise, 2.0.6-20131105004505-precise), libgimp2.0:i386 (2.8.6-0precise1~ppa, 2.8.8-0precise0~ppa), gir1.2-rb-3.0:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), wpasupplicant:i386 (0.7.3-6ubuntu2.1, 0.7.3-6ubuntu2.2), libcjs0c:i386 (2.0.0-20131021020602-precise, 2.0.0-20131105020703-precise), nemo-data:i386 (2.0.2-20131023010018-precise, 2.0.5-20131105010007-precise), totem:i386 (3.0.1-0ubuntu21.1, 3.4.3-0ubuntu1~precise1), gimp-data:i386 (2.8.6-0precise1~ppa, 2.8.8-0precise0~ppa), transmission-common:i386 (2.51-0ubuntu1.3, 2.73-0ubuntu1~precise1), cinnamon-translations:i386 (2.0.1-20131021040407-precise, 2.0.1-20131105040807-precise), totem-mozilla:i386 (3.0.1-0ubuntu21.1, 3.4.3-0ubuntu1~precise1), rhythmbox-plugin-magnatune:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), transmission-gtk:i386 (2.51-0ubuntu1.3, 2.73-0ubuntu1~precise1) End-Date: 2013-11-07 17:34:40

  • Ubuntu purple splash screen with blinking pixels?

    - by joxnas
I had ubuntu 9.10 I upgraded to 10.04 after solving some problems (freeze at boot). Since then, I don't have the ubuntu's logo showing up when I boot, but a purple screen with some blinking pixels. I didn't care much about it... but today my computer took too long at that screen (normally it was just 1/4 second, but today it was like a minute..). And it happened like 4 or 5 times in a row (Only at the 5th time I realised that it was not freezing up, but it simply would took more time) After a reboot, it is again 1/4 second of purple screen but I don't want this problem to return.. so I want to get rid of the purple screen (I think it is an indicator of the problem) Well, I already installed the graphic drivers (going to system admnistration hardware drivers). But it didn't solve anything. (I don't know if it is even related) I searched in google, found something old (2006) and I think it maybe has some relation with my problems .. http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-294692.html But couldn't understand the conversation (i'm a linux novice) Sorry for my horrible english.. I would appreciate any help! My hardware: ATI Mobility Radeon 4650 HD P7450 2.13Ghz Core 2 Duo

  • Is ffmpeg incorrectly interpreting .aif files?

    - by marue
Being on an Ubuntu 10.04 server i installed the ffmpeg packages with apt. ffmpeg is working afterwards, and doing as it should. Almost. For testing purposes i uploaded a few audiofiles. One of them, an aif file, is not being correctly interpreted. While on my workhorse (Mac SnowLeopard) ffmpeg tells the format as Stream #0.0: Audio: pcm_s24be, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, s32, 2116 kb/s my Ubuntu server says it is: Stream #0.0: Audio: pcm_s24be, 44100 Hz, stereo, s16, 2116 kb/s which is the wrong bitdepth. Ubuntu then fails to convert the file with the error message [pcm_s24be @ 0xcd4b580]invalid PCM packet Error while decoding stream #0.0 which certainly is not true. The file is perfectly valid. Are there any know issues for ffmpeg interpreting the aif format? How can i find out which version of the aif-codec ffmpeg is using? Any ideas how to approach this issue? ffprobe output: FFprobe version SVN-r20090707, Copyright (c) 2007-2009 Stefano Sabatini libavutil 49.15. 0 / 49.15. 0 libavcodec 52.20. 0 / 52.20. 1 libavformat 52.31. 0 / 52.31. 0 built on Jan 20 2010 00:13:01, gcc: 4.4.3 20100116 (prerelease) Input #0, aiff, from 'testfile.aif': Duration: 00:00:04.00, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 2117 kb/s Stream #0.0: Audio: pcm_s24be, 44100 Hz, stereo, s16, 2116 kb/s update 2: Forcing the conversion with -sample_fmt s32 doesn't change anything. Strange thing is: Even without using -sample_fmt s32 i just realized that the conversion is working and creates valid audiofiles. There just is the error message from above.

  • Emacs doesn't load gui.

    - by D Connors
Hi, whenever I run emacs or emacs23 on terminal I just get the following output: ** (emacs:2620): CRITICAL **: menu_proxy_module_load: assertion `dbusproxy != NULL' failed And the gui doesn't load, and emacs' window never opens. The emacs process doesn't actually crash (the terminal stays busy, and I can see the emacs23 process running with ps -e). I've tried running it with the -D --debug-init arguments, but the same thing happens and the output is exactly the same. However, if I run emacs -nw it successfully runs emacs in terminal mode as if nothing were wrong. Strangely, this problem only started happening the second time I ran emacs today. The first time it worked perfectly fine. Since then, I've tried rebooting and I've tried purging the emacs installation, to no success. I haven't installed any new packages today, but I might have upgraded some, could that be the reason? Is there a way to find out which packages were installed/upgraded today? Thanks I'm running Ubuntu Lucid

  • Lighttpd not starting - no error

    - by Furism
I recently installed Lighttpd on Ubuntu Server 10.04 x86_64 and created several websites. What I do is include /etc/lighttpd/vhost.d/*.conf and put a configuration file for each website in that directory. The problem I have is when I "service lighttpd start" I get the message that the service started, there is no error message: root@178-33-104-210:~# service lighttpd start Syntax OK * Starting web server lighttpd [ OK ] But then if I take a look at the services listening, Lighttpd is nowhere to be seen: root@178-33-104-210:~# netstat -tap Active Internet connections (servers and established) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name tcp 0 0 localhost:mysql *:* LISTEN 829/mysqld tcp 0 0 *:ftp *:* LISTEN 737/vsftpd tcp 0 0 *:ssh *:* LISTEN 739/sshd tcp6 0 0 [::]:ssh [::]:* LISTEN 739/sshd So I'm looking at ways I could troubleshoot this. I checked in /var/log/lighttpd/error.log and there's nothing in it. Edit: Sorry, I indicated I use CentOS but it's actually Ubuntu Server (I usually use CentOS but had to go with Ubuntu for that one).

  • iptables -L lags on non localhost or anywhere address

    - by DazSlayer
I am trying to configure iptables for ubuntu 10.04 and I have a problem with iptables -L lagging on rows where the destination or source address is not localhost or anywhere. The following entries will cause lag on their row: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 111 -s 192.168.1.14 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 90 -d 192.168.1.14 -j ACCEPT while this does not: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport localhost -s 192.168.1.14 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport localhost -d 192.168.1.14 -j ACCEPT I feel like this might be due to iptables checking to see if the ip is reachable. If not, what is the cause, if it is how can I disable it?

  • Why is Apache htdigest authentication failing in IE10 on Windows 8?

    - by Kevin Fodness
One of our developers reported that for the past week or two, the htdigest authentication that we have set up on our test sites in Apache is not working in IE10 on Windows 8. It's fine on IE10 on Windows 7, and it's fine on Chrome on Windows 8. The specific behavior is: Navigate to site with htdigest authentication enabled, username and password form pops up, enter correct username and password, and the username and password box pops up again. Potentially useful information: All patches applied on Windows 8 box No additional software on Windows 8 box other than Outlook 2013 and a browser test suite (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Chrome Canary, Opera Next) Win8 running in a virtual machine on Xen Same behavior can be replicated on Win8/IE10 on Browserstack.com Server running Ubuntu 10.10 with Apache 2.2.16 This feels like a patch was applied to the Windows box that broke digest authentication for IE10 on Win8 (box configured for automatic updates). However, without knowing a specific date I can't necessarily nail this down. Has anyone else experienced this problem? EDIT: This problem only happens in the "Metro" interface, not when running IE10 in desktop mode. As of a few weeks ago, it worked fine even in the "Metro" interface.

  • Change the order of IP addresses returned by ifconfig?

    - by erikcw
I have an Ubuntu server with several IP addresses attached to it. 127.0.0.1 is listed as venet0 by ifconfig. I'm using Chef to configure the server. The problem is that chef is listing 127.0.0.1 as the IP address for the server instead of one of the server's "real" IPs. (apparent "ohai ipaddress" uses the first IP listed by ifconfig to determine the server's IP). How can I change the order so the servers main IP is listed first instead of the 127.0.0.1? Can venet0 be deleted and venet0:0 be "promoted" to take its place since 127.0.0.1 is already listed in the "lo" interface? lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:334 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:334 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:16700 (16.7 KB) TX bytes:16700 (16.7 KB) venet0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:127.0.0.1 P-t-P:127.0.0.1 Bcast:0.0.0.0 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP BROADCAST POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:7622207 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:8183436 errors:0 dropped:1 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:2102750761 (2.1 GB) TX bytes:2795213667 (2.7 GB) venet0:0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:XXX.XXX.XXX.XX1 P-t-P:XXX.XXX.XXX.XX1 Bcast:0.0.0.0 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP BROADCAST POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MTU:1500 Metric:1 venet0:1 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:XXX.XXX.XXX.XX2 P-t-P:XXX.XXX.XXX.XX2 Bcast:0.0.0.0 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP BROADCAST POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MTU:1500 Metric:1 route -n route -n Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 192.0.2.1 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 venet0 0.0.0.0 192.0.2.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 venet0

  • Ubuntu displaying GDM but no login

    - by Shawn
Ubuntu (Wubi, Lucid Lynx) boots and shows the login screen itself with the background and plays the boot sound but a list of users is never displayed. A mouse is on screen and I can move it but, alas, it does nothing. Dropping to a virtual term with CTRL+Alt+F# drops me to a cursor but I can't actually input anything. I can't boot into single-user with GRUB since it's Wubi and it never specifies a boot kernel directly in GRUB's initial menu.lst (only in files that it then reads from). Other details that may be helpful: Single monitor Same video card that's been working for months No new hardware Edit: I ssh'd in since it evidently booted up the sshd which is handy. dpkg-reconfigure gdm didn't do anything helpful. I do, however, get a "no seat-id found" when manually running it.

  • Ubuntu snap-to-edge feature for XP

    - by Wesley
Hi all. I am running Windows XP SP3 dual booting with Ubuntu 9.10. I really like the snap to edge feature of Ubuntu and wondered if you could get that feature in XP. This would basically prevent any windows from straying from the workspace and would allow windows to snap to the edges of the screen and to the edges of other windows. Thanks in advance!

  • erlyvideo server doesn't start automatically after reboot

    - by electroid
    I have installed erlyvideo server on ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala. Everything works fine, but after server reboot I have to start erlyvideo server manually with /etc/init.d/erlyvideo start. I try allready update-rc.d and I think erlyvideo by default should start automaticaly. Any help will be appreciated. Here erlyvideo startup script located in /etc/init.d/erlyvideo: #!/bin/sh ### BEGIN INIT INFO # Provides: erlyvideo # Required-Start: $local_fs $network # Required-Stop: $local_fs $network # Default-Start: 2 3 4 5 # Default-Stop: 0 1 6 # Short-Description: starts the erlyvideo streaming server # Description: starts the erlyvideo using erlang system ### END INIT INFO case "$1" in start) cd /opt/erlyvideo && ./bin/erlyvideo "$1" ;; stop) cd /opt/erlyvideo && ./bin/erlyvideo "$1" ;; restart) cd /opt/erlyvideo && ./bin/erlyvideo "$1" ;; soft-restart) cd /opt/erlyvideo && ./bin/erlyvideo "$1" ;; upgrade) cd /opt/erlyvideo && ./bin/erlyvideo "$1" ;; reconfigure) cd /opt/erlyvideo && ./bin/erlyvideo "$1" ;; reboot) cd /opt/erlyvideo && ./bin/erlyvideo "$1" ;; ping) cd /opt/erlyvideo && ./bin/erlyvideo "$1" ;; console) cd /opt/erlyvideo && ./bin/erlyvideo "$1" ;; attach) cd /opt/erlyvideo && ./bin/erlyvideo "$1" ;; attach-erl) cd /opt/erlyvideo && ./erts-5.8.4/bin/erl -name [email protected] -remsh [email protected] ;; *) echo $"Usage: $0 {start|stop|restart|soft-restart|upgrade|reboot|ping|console|attach}" exit 1 esac exit 0 And I have found S91erlyvideo in /etc/rc2.d next to S91apache2 which starts just fine on every reboot.

  • pdftk issue after updating Ubuntu from 9.04 to 9.10

    - by Crazydog
We upgraded our server to 9.10 from 9.04 the other day, and it all went well except for one rather important program. We're using pdftk to automatically generate filled out pdf forms. On 9.04, it worked just fine. After updating to 9.10, the pdf forms would no longer be filled out - they'd just be empty. I discovered that if I try to create an fdf file via pdftk from my PDF form, it just creates an empty fdf with no fields. On windows, pdftk generates the fdf file just fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • In search of a good audio player for Ubuntu 9.10

    - by Joe Casadonte
If this should be marked Community Wiki, please let me know. I'm switching from XP to Ubuntu, and I have been very disappointed with the selection of media players available. I'm primarily interested in an audio player, but integrated video and library management is OK, too. My criteria: Must be able to play audio CDs (I'm shocked how many apps this does away with, right away) Must be able to play MP3 & WAV; OGG, SHN, FLAC are all bonuses Repeat and Shuffle modes are a must FreeDB / GraceNote through a proxy is a must (if it can read a PAC file, that would be awesome) It needs to be really small, e.g. skinnable or an applet Ability to execute a playlist is a plus Gapless MP3 playback a plus I'm running Gnome, but I'm not totally adverse to a KDE app. Command-line only is also a viable option. Some that I've tried: RhythmBox - probably the best of the lot that I've tried; I don't like its mini mode (doesn't show the song being played) and I can't figure out how to get it to hit FreeDB/GraceNote through a proxy Songbird - can't play CDs, playlist management is atrocious Banshee Jajuk Maybe a couple of more. Thanks! UPDATE I tried out VLC, Amarok and Songbord (again). VLC I eventually got to work (I had some kind of bad configuration). It seemed way more involved than I was looking for out of a music player, and in general more geared to video than audio. I couldn't fathom its library management, which I think it has; maybe it doesn't, and that's why I couldn't figure it out. Amaork looked very promising but the library management was not to my liking, and the way it handled a playlist with both MP3 and WAV is inexplicable at best. I did like some aspects of the UI, but not enough to keep it. Songbird is very finicky, but I like the library management. Sort of. It kept telling me my Watch folder was invalid, even thought it clearly was accessible. Playlist management is bizarre, and the message that it was deleting source files whenever I deleted a playlist had me too worried to keep using it. Had it been able to play CDs, maybe I would have persevered. Audacious, while a bit odd at times, does seem to do what I want. If it had a library manager, I wouldn't have bothered trying any of the others. Thanks for the help, everyone!
