• Setting up a web development/build environment

  Hello all, My current project has a development web server and live web server. Developers make changes to files on the dev server and test them (by going to the dev address) and make changes as necessary. When the file or files are ready to go, they are copied to the live server. There is no version control. As you might expect, there are some problems with this model: It's hard to keep track of what other programmers have done. It's hard to keep track of what files should be copied to the live server. There is no version control. I'm in a position to make nearly any change I like, but I want it to be the right one! I have been turning this over in my head for quite a while, and I have a solution that might be okay. But I want SO's opinion. Certainly version control needs to be added. But how should it work with the existing codebase and where should the developers be testing? How can anyone know what needs to be moved to the live server? What other details need to be addressed? How would you attack this problem? Supplementary information: The website is vital, but not mission critical. A small amount of downtime is acceptable. There are very few developers. (Right now, only 4.) History: Before I started, the project used Visual Source Safe. This was a sufficiently bad experience that they quit using it and abandoned version control. The project is an ASP.NET (C#) website. This seems like a question that may have a complicated answer. Thanks for thinking about it!

• Develop multiple very similar projects at once

  I am developing a semi-complicated site that is available in several countries at once. Much effort has been put in to make the code bases as similar as possible to one another and ultimately only the config file and some representational data will differ between them. Each project has its own SVN repository which maps directly to a live test site. That part is handled by the IDE we use to work. Now I am in need to create a some sort of system to keep all these projects in sync. The best theoretical solution so far is to create a local hook script that would fire on committing and Merge the committed files from the project that is being committed to all other projects Optionally upload them to the live site, replacing previous files The first problem is that I don't know how I would do the merging - I guess it would be like applying a SVN patch or something. The second is if I do not want to upload the changes to the live server, how would I go about synching the live and local code bases (replace older files?). I am posting this question, not going through the potentially huge trouble of solving the aforementioned problems myself is that I believe this is a pretty common situation and someone would already have a solution and others may benefit from the answers in the future. Lastly, I'm on windows7, develop PHP and use tortoiseSVN.

• Flex 4 hideEffect transition bug

  I'm trying to create a slide effect. Everything works fine except when the hideEffect animation is shown for the first time. The content does not become invisible when crossing the TabNavigator's border, which looks really ugly in my current project. • jQuery .die isnt killing an attached event?

  Hi I've just started experimenting with .live and .die and having some great results but one thing isn't working. I've been tinkering with firebugs console to try out my written code live to see if i can figure out the reason why .die isn't killing off an attached event. First if i do this //attach ajax submission $('a[href$=edit]').live("click", function(event) { $.get($(this).attr("href"), null, null); return false; }); Then as expected when I click on a link the ajax fires off and my server side code injects a form for inline editing. But sometimes I want to disable this behaviour and also make the link unclickable so I do the following //unbind ajax form creation when we click on a link, then disable its semantic behaviour $('a[href$=edit]').die("click").click( function(){ return false; } ); which works but if then try to remove this and restore that ajax goodness with the code below it doesn't work, Instead the link remains unclickable. I cant figure out why? • How do I change the application background color at run-time in a Flex 3.5 application?

  I have a Flex 3.5 application that will serve multiple purposes, and as part of the visual changes that I'd like to make to indicate which mode the application is in, I want to change its background color. • And now for a complete change of direction from C++ function pointers

  I am building a part of a simulator. We are building off of a legacy simulator, but going in different direction, incorporating live bits along side of the simulated bits. The piece I am working on has to, effectively route commands from the central controller to the various bits. In the legacy code, there is a const array populated with an enumerated type. A command comes in, it is looked up in the table, then shipped off to a switch statement keyed by the enumerated type. The type enumeration has a choice VALID_BUT_NOT_SIMULATED, which is effectively a no-op from the point of the sim. I need to turn those no-ops into commands to actual other things [new simulated bits| live bits]. The new stuff and the live stuff have different interfaces than the old stuff [which makes me laugh about the shill job that it took to make it all happen, but that is a topic for a different discussion]. I like the array because it is a very apt description of the live thing this chunk is simulating [latching circuits by row and column]. I thought that I would try to replace the enumerated types in the array with pointers to functions and call them directly. This would be in lieu of the lookup+switch.

• SharePoint 2007 - Content deployment and swapping content database

  Hi all, I'm currently working on a SharePoint 2007 site which is setup to allow clients to author content on a staging server and then this is automatically pushed up to the live environment via content deployment. The content deployment is setup in the 'Content deployment jobs and paths' in central admin. Now the problem I've got is that it seems that historically there have been a mixture of full and incremental deployments done to the live site collection which according to Stefan Goßner's best practices post (http://blogs.technet.com/stefan_gossner/pages/content-deployment-best-practices.aspx) is a bad idea due to the fact that things soon become out of sync. It's gotten to the point where the content deployment has just stopped working and incremental or full deployments are throwing errors in the logs. What I'm thinking is that I probably need to perform a full content deployment to an empty site collection and then somehow switch the new clean site collection with the current live one. I was wondering if anybody has any experience with this and could provide any pointers, I'm currently investigating the feasibility of performing the clean content deployment and then switching the live content database with the new one, however in my tests I've found that as soon as I switch content databases, the incremental deployment still fails. Any help much appreciated. (Note: I did post this on SharePoint Overflow as well, but thought I'd put it on here in case anybody else has any ideas) Cheers

• PHP download page: file_exists() returns true, but browser returns 'page not found'

  I'm using PHP for a file download page. Here's a snippet of the problem code: if (file_exists($attachment_location)) { header($_SERVER["SERVER_PROTOCOL"] . I thought it might be an .htaccess issue, but all .htaccess files on the live server are identical to their local counterparts. My next guess would be the live server's PHP configuration, but I have no idea what PHP setting might cause this behaviour. The file_exists() function always returns true - I've checked this on the live server and it's always correctly picking up the file, its size etc., so it does have a handle on the file. It just won't perform the download! The main site is a Wordpress site, but this code isn't part of a Wordpress page - it's in a standalone directory within the site root. UPDATE: is_file() and is_readable() are both returning true for the file, so that's not the problem. The specific line that is causing the problem is: readfile($attachment_location) Everything up until that point is super happy.

• Drawing a WPF UserControl with DataBinding to an Image

  Hey Everyone, So I'm trying to use a WPF User Control to generate a ton of images from a dataset where each item in the dataset would produce an image... I'm hoping I can set it up in such a way that I can use WPF databinding, and for each item in the dataset, create an instance of my user control, set the dependency property that corresponds to my data item, and then draw the user control to an image, but I'm having problems getting it all working (not sure whether databinding or drawing to the image is my problem) Sorry for the massive code dump, but I've been trying to get this working for a couple of hours now, and WPF just doesn't like me (have to learn at some point though...) EDIT 2: Did something I should have done a long time ago, set a background on my canvas, but that didn't change the output image at all, so my problem is most definitely somehow to do with my drawing code (although there may be something wrong with my databinding too)

Here's the authentication manager bean referencing the preferred authentication bean: <authentication-manager> <authentication-provider ref="ldapAuthProvider"/> <authentication-provider user-service-ref="userDetailsService"> <password-encoder hash="md5" base64="true"> <salt-source system-wide="secret"/> </password-encoder> </authentication-provider> </authentication-manager> On a side note, whether I set the password-encoder on ldapAuthProvider to plaintext or just leave it blank, doesn't seem to make a difference. • What is AssetCache and AFCache?

  I'm currently investigating the different locations where the flashplayer in OSX stores its files. The reason is protecting privacy. I've found that Chrome and Firefox both read/write to the following directories: ~/Library/Caches/Adobe/Flash Player/AFCache ~/Library/Caches/Adobe/Flash Player/AssetCache ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/#SharedObjects ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/sys The last two directories are locations where Firefox stores LSO cookies for long time tracking. You can manually delete them yourself or do this automatically using an extension such as BetterPrivacy for Firefox. However, I have no clue to what the AFCache and AssetCache are for. I assume that you should not delete them as cache generally improves the browsing experience, but I'd really like to know what is stored there? I've been searching the Internet quite a bit now, but there does not seem to be much documentation.

• Unable to execute file in the temporary directory

  I am using Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit. I see this error, almost everytime I launch an executable file (to install it) but not for all of them. I don't see the error when I use Run as Administrator. I looked around, and found a solution: I needed to give permissions to the current user for the temp file as shown in the picture below: The problem here is solved temporarily, but it goes back to give me the same problem after restarting the PC. What can I do to prevent such a thing? I don't really want to use the built in Administrator account all the time. Update: The problem is caused by the cracked version of Adobe Acrobat.   Is there some Live Linux distribution (on CD, DVD or USB), which allow one to use specific xorg.conf file, i.e. specific X11 configuration? The problem I am trying to solve is to find Linux Live distribution for web browsing which would work well with NEC LCD 22WV monitor. It is supposedly DDCCCI capable, but X.Org X Window System autoconfiguration fails to detect proper modeline, and uses fallback 800x600 screen resolution, instead of preferred screen resolution of 1680x1050.

  What is the proper procedure for distributing software updates using group policy's software installation feature? For example, if I want to install Java, and Java 1.7u6 is already added as a package, should I: A) Remove the Java 1.7u6 package (selecting the "allow users to continue to use" option), and add Java 1.7u7? B) Add Java 1.7u7 and specify that it is an update to the existing 1.7u6 package? (Will this install the oldest version first, then install each update one after the other, or will it just install the latest package?) Note that this question is geared toward the operation of the software installation feature of group policy, not specifically the behavior of the Java installers. This could easily apply to the installation of Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, or any other common software applications with frequent updates.

  My notebook's(Compaq Presario V5000) graphic card damaged last week and after that it will be restarted when I want to boot. So I tested it via windows live, and it booted from CD without any problem (as you know in win live, the graphic card doesn't recognize, and in setting of graphic card write : unknown ) Now my question : Is there anyway to install windows without any graphic driver please ?for example, Should I delete some installation files ?! PS : I tested Windows XP , VISTA and 7 but, when it goes to GUI installation restarted again :( Thanks for your help

• How to change the fonts used in Foxit Reader?

  I really want to use Foxit Reader as my default PDF reader for its Tab Interface, and low memory footprint. Having tried mutiple times over the years the only thing that is stopping me are the Fonts. PDF in Adobe Reader looks Regular, but PDF Rendered in Foxit Looks Ugly. Would this solution works in Chrome as well? Since i record Chrome is using Foxit Reader as its embedded PDF engine. And is there any reasons why Fonts are used differently in Adobe and Foxit Reader?
