  • What is a better language to use when building a database: Visual C# or Visual Basic (VB.net)? [on hold]

    - by user3413537
I'm building a GUI and a database which is using SQL as a server (internal database not a web application). Which language is more of a "right tool" when it comes to building a not very structurally complicated database? What are the advantages and disadvantages of Visual C# / VB.net? I've been reading a lot of stuff online and they said that VB.net is not as capable and it doesn't have as much support as Visual C#, and it seems that VB.net is on a decline in terms of popularity.

  • What is a recent programming language of choice for the AI?

    - by Eduard Florinescu
For a few decades the programming language of choice for AI was either Prolog or LISP, and a few more others that are not so well known. Most of them were designed before the 70's. Changes happens a lot on many other domains specific languages, but in the AI domain it hadn't surfaced so much as in the web specific languages or scripting etc. Are there recent programming languages that were intended to change the game in the AI and learn from the insufficiencies of former languages?

  • Which language and platform features really boosted your coding speed?

    - by Serge
The question is about delivering working code faster without any regard for design, quality, maintainability, etc. Here is the list of things that help me to write and read code faster: Language: static typing, support for object-oriented and functional programming styles, embedded documentation, short compile-debug-fix cycle or REPL, automatic memory management Platform: "batteries" included (text, regex, IO, threading, networking), thriving community, tons of open-source libs Tools: IDE, visual debugger, code-completion, code navigation, refactoring

  • How to modify the language used by the Google Search Engine on IE 9.0?

    - by Seb Killer
I would like to know how we can modify the settings of the Google Search Engine used in Internet Explorer 9.0 to force to use a specific language. Our problem is the following: as it uses geolocation by default, and we are in Switzerland, it takes the first of the official languages this is Swiss-German. However, we are located in Geneva where French is the official language. Furthermore, as most of our users speak English, we would like to force the language to be English and not Swiss-German. Does anybody know how to achieve this ? Thanks alot, Sébastien

  • Is there some way Linux editors can tell the programming language without the file extension?

    - by vfclists
I am editing some scripts on Linux without the languages file extensions, and it seems that the editors, namely vi, nano and gedit are not applying syntax highlighting because the filenames don't use the language extensions. Is there some parameters to be passed or some setting that can enable them to recognize the language? Update: After some googling I realize that bash has that ability, at least to do some parsing or check the shebang at the top determine the language. By default Ubuntu does not install the complete vim package, so after installing it, the shell files are recognized. I don't know about nano or gedit, but vi and its graphical counterpart will do.

  • how to change user interface language in firefox to avoid so-called localization?

    - by hugh featherstone
since yesterday my firefox thinks that everyone in belgium speaks flemish. this is a typically american problem: americans NEVER seem to know where languages are spoken (i think they just guess) but for some reason believe that language localization software is cool. it is NOT, it is a curse. so suddenly i no longer have my user interface in english (which was fine) but now in flemish, which looks and reads like a tongue disease and is not even the second language of the area i live in (first language here is german, second is french). how can i change back to english?

  • Why does the interpreted order seem different from what I expect?

    - by inspectorG4dget
    I have a problem that I have not faced before: It seems that the order of interpretation in my program is somehow different from what I expect. I have written a small Twitter client. It takes a few seconds for my program to actually post a tweet after I click the "GO" button (which can also be activated by hitting ENTER on the keyboard). I don't want to click multiple times within this time period thinking that I hadn't clicked it the first time. Therefore, when the button is clicked, I would like the label text to display something that tells me that the button has been clicked. I have implemented this message by altering the label text before I send the tweet across. However, for some reason, the message does not display until the tweet has been attempted. But since I have a confirmation message after the tweet, I never get to see this message and my original problem goes unsolved. I would really appreciate any help. Here is the relevant code: class SimpleTextBoxForm(Form): def __init__(self): # set window properties self.Text = "Tweeter" self.Width = 235 self.Height = 250 #tweet away self.label = Label() self.label.Text = "Tweet Away..." self.label.Location = Point(10, 10) self.label.Height = 25 self.label.Width = 200 #get the tweet self.tweetBox = TextBox() self.tweetBox.Location = Point(10, 45) self.tweetBox.Width = 200 self.tweetBox.Height = 60 self.tweetBox.Multiline = True self.tweetBox.WordWrap = True self.tweetBox.MaxLength = 140; #ask for the login ID self.askLogin = Label() self.askLogin.Text = "Login:" self.askLogin.Location = Point(10, 120) self.askLogin.Height = 20 self.askLogin.Width = 60 self.login = TextBox() self.login.Text= "" self.login.Location = Point(80, 120) self.login.Height = 40 self.login.Width = 100 #ask for the password self.askPass = Label() self.askPass.Text = "Password:" self.askPass.Location = Point(10, 150) self.askPass.Height = 20 self.askPass.Width = 60 # display password box with character hiding self.password = TextBox() self.password.Location = Point(80, 150) self.password.PasswordChar = "x" self.password.Height = 40 self.password.Width = 100 #submit button self.button1 = Button() self.button1.Text = 'Tweet' self.button1.Location = Point(10, 180) self.button1.Click += self.update self.AcceptButton = self.button1 #pack all the elements of the form self.Controls.Add(self.label) self.Controls.Add(self.tweetBox) self.Controls.Add(self.askLogin) self.Controls.Add(self.login) self.Controls.Add(self.askPass) self.Controls.Add(self.password) self.Controls.Add(self.button1) def update(self, sender, event): if not self.password.Text: self.label.Text = "You forgot to enter your password..." else: self.tweet(self.tweetBox.Text, self.login.Text, self.password.Text) def tweet(self, msg, login, password): self.label.Text = "Attempting Tweet..." # this should be executed before sending the tweet is attempted. But this seems to be executed only after the try block try: success = 'Tweet successfully completed... yay!\n' + 'At: ' + time.asctime().split()[3] ServicePointManager.Expect100Continue = False Twitter().UpdateAsXML(login, password, msg) except: error = 'Unhandled Exception. Tweet unsuccessful' self.label.Text = error else: self.label.Text = success self.tweetBox.Text = ""

  • What kind of knowledge you need to invent a new programming language?

    - by systempuntoout
I just finished to read "coders at works", a brilliant book by Peter Seibel with 15 interviews to some of the most interesting computer programmers alive today. Well, many of the interviewees have (co)invented\implemented a new programming language. For example: * Joe Armstrong: Inventor of Erlang * L. Peter Deutsch: implementer of Smalltalk-80 * Brendan Eich: Inventor of JavaScript * Dan Ingalls: Smalltalk implementor and designer * Simon Peyton Jones: Coinventor of Haskell * Guy Steele: Coinventor of Scheme Is out of any doubt that their minds have something special and unreachable, and i'm not crazy to think i will ever able to create a new language; i'm just interested in this topic. So, imagine a funny\grotesque scenario where your crazy boss one day will come to your desk to say "i want a new programming language with my name on it..take the time you need and do it", what will you start to study? What kind of knowledge do you need to model, design and implement a brand new programming language?

  • If you have an application localized in pt-br and pt-pt, what language you should choose if the syst

    - by Sorin Sbarnea
If you have an application localized in pt-br and pt-pt, what language you should choose if the system is reporting only pt code (generic Portuguese)? This question is independent of the nature of the application, desktop, mobile or browser based. Let's assume you are not able to get region information from another source and you have to choose one language as the default one. The question does apply as well for more case including: * pt-pt and pt-br * en-us and en-gb * fr-fr and fr-CA * zh-cn, zh-tw, .... - in fact in this case I know that zh can be used as predominant language for Simplified Chinese where full code is zh-hans. For zh-tw, zh-hant-tw, zh-hk, zh-mo the proper code (canonical) should be zh-hant. In fact the question can be extended to: How to I determine the predominant languages for a specified meta-language? I need a solution that will include at least Portuguese, English and French.

  • Is it possible to make notepad++ support tamil language functionality?

    - by Pandiya Chendur
Notepad++ (from v2.3) supports the multilanguage functionality by means of a translated xml file (from english.xml). Normally you don't need it if you install Notepad++ by its installer. You may need the language file if you install Notepad++ from zip format binary (or if your language is not supported by NSIS installer). Is it possible to make notepad++ support tamil language functionality?

  • Why does my JSF + Spring web application output JSF source code instead of interpreted HTML page?

    - by Corvus
    I'm new to both JSF and Spring Framework and I'm trying to figure out how to make them work together. My current problem is that application outputs my JSF files without interpreting them. Here are some snippets of my code which I believe might be relevant: dispatcher-servlet.xml <bean id="urlMapping" class="org.springframework.web.servlet.handler.SimpleUrlHandlerMapping"> <property name="mappings"> <props> <prop key="login.htm">loginController</prop> </props> </property> </bean> <bean id="viewResolver" class="org.springframework.web.servlet.view.InternalResourceViewResolver" p:prefix="/WEB-INF/pages/" p:suffix=".xhtml" /> <bean name="loginController" class="controller.LoginController" /> loginController public class LoginController extends MultiActionController { public ModelAndView login(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws Exception { System.out.println("LOGIN"); return new ModelAndView("login"); } WEB-INF/pages/login.xhtml <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' ?> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:h="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html"> <h:head> <title>#{message.log}</title> </h:head> <h:body> <h:form> <h:outputLabel value="#{message.username}" for="userName"> <h:inputText id="userName" value="#{User.name}" /> </h:outputLabel> <h:commandButton value="#{message.loggin}" action="#{User.login}" /> </h:form> </h:body> </html> Any ideas where the problem might be? Does this code make any sense at all? I'm well aware of fact, that probably completely sucks and I'll be glad to here WHY it sucks and how to make it better. Thanks :)

  • What is the current status of LOGO? (The programming language)

    - by Workshop Alex
In another Q I saw someone mention LOGO and it reminded me of some programming language from the past, mostly used for educational purposes. Basically, you would have to program a turtle with a pen through it's back. By telling it where to move, the pen would draw lines. It could also lift the pen to move without drawing lines. I have fond memories of this language, since it was one of the first I've ever used, about 30 years ago. (Yeah, I'm old.) Well, I only programmed with LOGO for two days or so, but it got me hooked to programming. But I wonder if the LOGO information on it's Wikipedia page is still correct. And more importantly, are there versions that will create .NET binaries? Are there only LOGO Interpreters and no compilers? What is the current status of this educational language? And more interestingly, are there more experts here at SO who have experimented with LOGO in the past? Yeah, I know. Nowadays this language is a bit antique but I got some warm and comfortable memories when I remembered this interesting language from my history. For a teenager back then, it was fun!

  • How to learn a language that has very little coverage?

    - by bennybdbc
I recently came across the Kogut language, and was interested by it. However, the only website to gain information from is the sourceforge page that hosts the project. I had no idea how to even attempt to look at the language in more depth. So what I'm asking is, has anyone here learnt a language that doesn't have the thousands of resources that Ruby, Python etc. have? What would be the best method to do so?

  • What is a good programming language for testers who are not great programmers?

    - by Brian T Hannan
We would like to create some simple automated tests that will be created and maintained by testers. Right now we have a tester who can code in any language, but in the future we might want any tester with a limited knowledge of programming to be able to add or modify the tests. What is a good programming language for testers who are not great programmers, or programmers at all? Someone suggested LUA, but I looked into LUA and it might be more complicated that another language would be. Preferably, the language will be interpreted and not be compiled. Let me know what you think.

  • Why do programmers sometimes refer to "C++/STL" like it's a separate language?

    - by BillyONeal
This may seem a trivial question, but it's one that's bothered me a lot lately. Why do some programmers refer to "C++/STL" like it's a different language? The STL is part of the C++ standard library -- and therefore is part of the language, "C++". It's not a separate component, and it does not live alone in the scope of things C++. Yet some continually act like it's a different language altogether. Why?

  • Why is my PowerShell multi dimensional array being interpreted as a 1 dimensional array?

    - by Jim
I have the following code: function HideTemplates($File, $Templates) { foreach ($Template in $Templates) { Write-Host $Template[0] $Template[1] $Template[2] } } HideTemplates "test.xml" @(("one", "two", "three")) HideTemplates "test.xml" @(("four", "five", "six"), ("seven", "eight", "nine")) It prints: o n e t w o t h r four five six seven eight nine I want it to print: one two three four five six seven eight nine Am I doing something wrong in my code? Is there a way to force PowerShell to tread a multi-dimensional array with a single item differently?

  • If I use Unicode on a ISO-8859-1 site, how will that be interpreted by a browser?

    - by grg-n-sox
So I got a site that uses ISO-8859-1 encoding and I can't change that. I want to be sure that the content I enter into the web app on the site gets parsed correctly. The parser works on a character by character basis. I also cannot change the parser, I am just writing files for it to handle. The content in my file I am telling the app to display after parsing contains Unicode characters (or at least I assume so, even if they were produced by Windows Alt Codes mapped to CP437). Using entities is not an option due to the character by character operation of the parser. The only characters that the parser escapes upon output are markup sensitive ones like ampersand, less than, and greater than symbols. I would just go ahead and put this through to see what it looks like, but output can only be seen on a publishing, which has to spend a couple days getting approved and such, and that would be asking too much for just a test case. So, long story short, if I told a site to output ?ÇÑ¥?? on a site with a meta tag stating it is supposed to use ISO-8859-1, will a browser auto-detect the Unicode and display it or will it literally translate it as ISO-8859-1 and get a different set of characters?

  • Possibility of language data type not mapped to shipped .NET Framework?

    - by John K
Does anybody know of a managed programming language implemented on .NET that contains a specialized data type that is not mapped through to the Common Type System/FCL/BCL or one that does not have a shipped .NET equivalent (e.g. shipped standard types like System.String, System.Int32)? This question would likely come from the perspective of someone porting a compiler (although I'm not doing that). Is it as simple as the language creating a new data type outside the BCL/FCL for its specialized type? If so does this hinder interoperability between programming languages that are otherwise accustomed to mapping all their built-in data types to what's in the BCL/FCL, like Visual Basic and C#? I can imagine this situation might come about if an obscure language compiler of some kind is ported to .NET for which there is no direct mapping of one of its implicit data types to the shipped Framework. How is this situation supported or allowed in general? What would be the expectation of the compiler and the Common Language Runtime?

  • A programming language for teaching data structures and algorithms with? [closed]

    - by Andreas Grech
Possible Duplicate: Choice of programming language for learning data structures and algorithms Teachers have different opinions on what programming language they would choose to teach data structures and algorithms with. Some would prefer a lower level language such as C because it allows the student to learn more about what goes on beyond the abstractions in terms of memory allocation and deallocation and pointers and pointer arithmetic. On the other hand, others would say that they would prefer a higher level language like Java because it allows the student to learn more about the concepts of the structures and the algorithm design rather than 'waste time' and fiddle around with memory segmentation faults and all the blunders that come with languages where memory management is manual. What is your take on this issue? And also, please post any references you may know of that also discuss this argument.
