  • Is there anything wrong with having a few private methods exposing IQueryable<T> and all public meth

    - by Nate Bross
    I'm wondering if there is a better way to approach this problem. The objective is to reuse code. Let’s say that I have a Linq-To-SQL datacontext and I've written a "repository style" class that wraps up a lot of the methods I need and exposes IQueryables. (so far, no problem). Now, I'm building a service layer to sit on top of this repository, many of the service methods will be 1<-1 with repository methods, but some will not. I think a code sample will illustrate this better than words. public class ServiceLayer { MyClassDataContext context; IMyRepository rpo; public ServiceLayer(MyClassDataContext ctx) { context = ctx; rpo = new MyRepository(context); } private IQueryable<MyClass> ReadAllMyClass() { // pretend there is some complex business logic here // and maybe some filtering of the current users access to "all" // that I don't want to repeat in all of the public methods that access // MyClass objects. return rpo.ReadAllMyClass(); } public IEnumerable<MyClass> GetAllMyClass() { // call private IQueryable so we can do attional "in-database" processing return this.ReadAllMyClass(); } public IEnumerable<MyClass> GetActiveMyClass() { // call private IQueryable so we can do attional "in-database" processing // in this case a .Where() clause return this.ReadAllMyClass().Where(mc => mc.IsActive.Equals(true)); } #region "Something my class MAY need to do in the future" private IQueryable<MyOtherTable> ReadAllMyOtherTable() { // there could be additional constrains which define // "all" for the current user return context.MyOtherTable; } public IEnumerable<MyOtherTable> GetAllMyOtherTable() { return this.ReadAllMyOtherTable(); } public IEnumerable<MyOtherTable> GetInactiveOtherTable() { return this.ReadAllMyOtherTable.Where(ot => ot.IsActive.Equals(false)); } #endregion } This particular case is not the best illustration, since I could just call the repository directly in the GetActiveMyClass method, but let’s presume that my private IQueryable does some extra processing and business logic that I don't want to replicate in both of my public methods. Is that a bad way to attack an issue like this? I don't see it being so complex that it really warrants building a third class to sit between the repository and the service class, but I'd like to get your thoughts. For the sake of argument, lets presume two additional things. This service is going to be exposed through WCF and that each of these public IEnumerable methods will be calling a .Select(m => m.ToViewModel()) on each returned collection which will convert it to a POCO for serialization. The service will eventually need to expose some context.SomeOtherTable which wont be wrapped into the repository.

  • .NET "Timer" would block other method calls?

    - by Ricky
    Hi guys: In ASP.NET 3.5, we suspect a delegate triggering by a "Timer" will block other method calls. From logs, some function calls will wait for the finishing of the delegate and continue to work. Is it true? If yes, what workaround can I do? PS: The delegate contains codes to use WCF to retrieve data and the following code private void Replace<T>(ref IList<T> src, IList<T> des) { lock(src) { while (src.Count > 0) { GC.SuppressFinalize(src.ElementAt(0)); src.RemoveAt(0); } GC.SuppressFinalize(src); src = des; } } Thanks a lot.

  • What is the difference between type.__getattribute__ and object.__getattribute__?

    - by Neil G
    Given: In [37]: class A: ....: f = 1 ....: In [38]: class B(A): ....: pass ....: In [39]: getattr(B, 'f') Out[39]: 1 Okay, that either calls super or crawls the mro? In [40]: getattr(A, 'f') Out[40]: 1 This is expected. In [41]: object.__getattribute__(A, 'f') Out[41]: 1 In [42]: object.__getattribute__(B, 'f') --------------------------------------------------------------------------- AttributeError Traceback (most recent call last) <ipython-input-42-de76df798d1d> in <module>() ----> 1 object.__getattribute__(B, 'f') AttributeError: 'type' object has no attribute 'f' What is getattribute not doing that getattr does? In [43]: type.__getattribute__(B, 'f') Out[43]: 1 What?! type.__getattribute__ calls super but object's version doesn't? In [44]: type.__getattribute__(A, 'f') Out[44]: 1

  • Simplest method of hiding sensitive information

    - by drozzy
    What is the simplest way I can hide a sensitive identifier, while providing some equivalent means of identifying the data from outside? For example, lets say I have a database table with records and one of them is an sensitive ID field. ID 2A 1S etc... then I want to have a second record: ID PublicID 2A AXXX44328 1S KKKZJSAAS such that when I am given a PublicID I can always determine what ID it refers to: H(PublicID) = ID but nobody else is able to do so. I suspect this is like, encryption - with throwing away a public key?

  • Pass form object value to static method

    - by jrubengb
    Hi, I need to take a form object value and pass it into a static method: public void SetCalendarStartSafe(DateTime startDateSafe) { startDateSafe = calendarStart.Value; } private static DataTable GetData() { frmMain frm = new frmMain(); DateTime startDate = new frmMain(); frm.SetCalendarStartSafe(startDate); } However I keep getting today's current date whenever I try this approach, even if the specified calendar date on the form is different. How can I can the user-specified calendar date from the original frmMain object? Thanks in advance for any guidance.

  • c++ signatures, pointers

    - by coubeatczech
    Hello, what's the difference between these signatures? T * f(T & identifier); T & f(T & identifier); T f(T & identifier); void f(T * identifier); void f(T & identifier); void f(T identifier); I met pointers in c, but the amperstand in function signature is new for me. Can Anyone explain this?

  • Indexing a method return (depending on Internationalization)

    - by Hedde
    Consider a django model with an IntegerField with some choices, e.g. COLORS = ( (0, _(u"Blue"), (1, _(u"Red"), (2, _(u"Yellow"), ) class Foo(models.Model): # ...other fields... color = models.PositiveIntegerField(choices=COLOR, verbose_name=_(u"color")) My current (haystack) index: class FooIndex(SearchIndex): text = CharField(document=True, use_template=True) color = CharField(model_attr='color') def prepare_color(self, obj): return obj.get_color_display() site.register(Product, ProductIndex) This obviously only works for keyword "yellow", but not for any (available) translations. Question: What's would be a good way to solve this problem? (indexing method returns based on the active language) What I have tried: I created a function that runs a loop over every available language (from settings) appending any translation to a list, evaluating this against the query, pre search. If any colors are matched it converts them backwards into their numeric representation to evaluate against obj.color, but this feels wrong.

  • SensorManager method crashes program

    - by Aidan
    Hi guys, When I run the following method my Android application crashes. I can't find the error because I get a "Source Not Found" error. Anyone have any idea's what I'm doing wrong? public void bearing(){ SensorManager sm = (SensorManager)getSystemService(Context.SENSOR_SERVICE); Sensor aSensor = sm.getDefaultSensor(Sensor.TYPE_ACCELEROMETER); Sensor mfSensor = sm.getDefaultSensor(Sensor.TYPE_MAGNETIC_FIELD); sm.registerListener(myAccelerometerListener, aSensor, SensorManager.SENSOR_DELAY_UI); sm.registerListener(myMagneticFieldListener, mfSensor, SensorManager.SENSOR_DELAY_UI); float[] values = new float[3]; float[] R = new float[9]; SensorManager.getRotationMatrix(R, null, accelerometerValues, magneticFieldValues); SensorManager.getOrientation(R, values); //Convert from Radians to degrees values[0] = (float) Math.toDegrees(values[0]); values[1] = (float) Math.toDegrees(values[1]); values[2] = (float) Math.toDegrees(values[2]); }

  • c++ when to put method out side the class

    - by user63898
    i saw that some times in c++ applications using only namespace declarations with header and source file like this : #ifndef _UT_ #define _UT_ #include <string> #include <windows.h> namespace UT { void setRootPath(char* program_path, char* file_path); char * ConvertStringToCharP(std::string str); }; #endif //and then in UT.cpp #include "UT.h" namespace UT { char * ConvertStringToCharP(std::string str) { char * writable = new char[str.size() + 1]; std::copy(str.begin(), str.end(), writable); writable[str.size()] = '\0'; return writable; } void setRootPath(char* program_path, char* file_path) { //... } } is it better then defining classic class with static methods? or just simple class ? dose this method has something better for the compiler linker ? the methods in this namespace are called allot of times .

  • How to call a method in another class using the arraylist index in java?

    - by Puchatek
    Currently I have two classes. A Classroom class and a School class. public void addTeacherToClassRoom(Classroom myClassRoom, String TeacherName) I would like my method addTeacherToClassRoom to use the Classroom Arraylist index number to setTeacherName e.g. int 0 = maths int 1 = science I would like to setTeacherName "Daniel" in int 1 science. many, thanks public class Classroom { private String classRoomName; private String teacherName; public void setClassRoomName(String newClassRoomName) { classRoomName = newClassRoomName; } public String returnClassRoomName() { return classRoomName; } public void setTeacherName(String newTeacherName) { teacherName = newTeacherName; } public String returnTeacherName() { return teacherName; } } import java.util.ArrayList; public class School { private ArrayList<Classroom> classrooms; private String classRoomName; private String teacherName; public School() { classrooms = new ArrayList<Classroom>(); } public void addClassRoom(Classroom newClassRoom, String theClassRoomName) { classrooms.add(newClassRoom); classRoomName = theClassRoomName; } public void addTeacherToClassRoom(Classroom myClassRoom, String TeacherName) { myClassRoom.setTeacherName(TeacherName); } }

  • Adding a method to a function object at runtime

    - by Carson Myers
    I read a question earlier asking if there was a times method in Python, that would allow a function to be called n times in a row. Everyone suggested for _ in range(n): foo() but I wanted to try and code a different solution using a function decorator. Here's what I have: def times(self, n, *args, **kwargs): for _ in range(n): self.__call__(*args, **kwargs) import new def repeatable(func): func.times = new.instancemethod(times, func, func.__class__) @repeatable def threeArgs(one, two, three): print one, two, three threeArgs.times(7, "one", two="rawr", three="foo") When I run the program, I get the following exception: Traceback (most recent call last): File "", line 244, in run_nodebug File "C:\py\repeatable.py", line 24, in threeArgs.times(7, "one", two="rawr", three="foo") AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'times' So I suppose the decorator didn't work? How can I fix this?

  • Action method expected parameter named Id and nothing otherwise

    - by codingbiz
    The Error The parameters dictionary contains a null entry for parameter 'UserId' of non-nullable type 'System.Int64' for method 'System.Web.Mvc.ActionResult Predict(Int64)' in 'sportingbiz.Controllers.PredictionController'. An optional parameter must be a reference type, a nullable type, or be declared as an optional parameter. Parameter name: parameters This does not work. Throws the error mentioned above http://mysite/User/Profile/15 This works http://mysite/User/Profile/?UserID=15 The Controller Action public ActionResult Profile(long UserID) { } When I changed the parameter name to Id it works. I think it's because Id was specified in the route collection (Global.asax). Is it possible to tell MVC that UserId should map to Id without changing it in the Global.asax

  • Using a message class static method taking in an action to wrap Try/Catch

    - by Chris Marisic
    I have a Result object that lets me pass around a List of event messages and I can check whether an action was successful or not. I've realized I've written this code in alot of places Result result; try { //Do Something ... //New result is automatically a success for not having any errors in it result = new Result(); } catch (Exception exception) { //Extension method that returns a Result from the exception result = exception.ToResult(); } if(result.Success) .... What I'm considering is replacing this usage with public static Result CatchException(Action action) { try { action(); return new Result(); } catch (Exception exception) { return exception.ToResult(); } } And then use it like var result = Result.CatchException(() => _model.Save(something)); Does anyone feel there's anything wrong with this or that I'm trading reusability for obscurity?

  • How to call object's method from constructor?

    - by Kirzilla
    Hello, var Dog = function(name) { this.name = name; this.sayName(); } Dog.prototype.sayName = function() { alert(this.name); } I'm creating new instance of Dog object, but method sayName() is undefined. Why? Or maybe I should do something like (but I can't see difference)... var Dog = function(name) { this.name = name; this.prototype.sayName = function() { alert(this.name); } } Thank you.

  • What would be my best MySQL Synchronization method?

    - by Kerry
    We're moving a social media service to be on separate data centers with global load balancing, as our other hosting provider's entire data center went down. Twice. This means that both websites need to be synchronized in some sense -- I'm less worried about the code of the pages, that's easy enough to sync, but they need to have the same database data. From my research on SO, it seems MySQL Replication is a good option, but the MySQL manual, for scaling out, says that its best when there are far more reads then there are writes/updates: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/replication-solutions-scaleout.html In our case, it's about equal. We're getting around 200-300 thousand requests a day right now, and we can grow rapidly. Every request is both a read and write request. What would be the best method or tool to handle this?

  • Most reliable method for uploading files in PHP w/ progress bar

    - by vanneto
    Hello everyone, I am interested in finding the most reliable method for uploading files in PHP. I need a progress bar with the upload. I have tried SWFUpload but it randomly issues an I/O Error. Even if the same file is uploaded sometimes there is an error and sometimes there is not. I have configured all the necessary INI/Mysql/Apache directives to accept large file uploads. So, I am looking for alternatives as a Flash based solution has not worked. Would Java be more relirable? I have also looked into PHP with APC. I definitely cannot afford these random errors, so any help on reliable software / suggestions on how to minimize them would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • Instantiating Java object with a passed in method

    - by superluminary
    It's been a few years since I've been heavily into Java. Coming back to it I'm seeing this pattern all over the place: ratingBar.setOnRatingBarChangeListener(new OnRatingBarChangeListener() { public void onRatingChanged(RatingBar ratingBar, float rating, boolean fromUser) { // do work } }); This looks more like Functional programming to me. It's a nice pattern but how is it possible to pass a method like this? In the old days a class was a class, and once compiled there was little you could do to it. My questions are: Can anyone let me know what this pattern is called? How can I write a class that can be instantiated in this way. Are there any other useful examples of functional patterns that have made their way into Java? What do I need to Google to read more about this? Thanks.

  • Factory Method Using Is/As Operator

    - by Swim
    I have factory that looks something like the following snippet. Foo is a wrapper class for Bar and in most cases (but not all), there is a 1:1 mapping. As a rule, Bar cannot know anything about Foo, yet Foo takes an instance of Bar. Is there a better/cleaner approach to doing this? public Foo Make( Bar obj ) { if( obj is Bar1 ) return new Foo1( obj as Bar1 ); if( obj is Bar2 ) return new Foo2( obj as Bar2 ); if( obj is Bar3 ) return new Foo3( obj as Bar3 ); if( obj is Bar4 ) return new Foo3( obj as Bar4 ); // same wrapper as Bar3 throw new ArgumentException(); } At first glance, this question might look like a duplicate (maybe it is), but I haven't seen one exactly like it. Here is one that is close, but not quite: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/242097/factory-based-on-typeof-or-is-a

  • ASP SaveToDisk method takes an incredible amount of time

    - by burnt_hand
    This is a method in ASP Classic that saves a file to disk. It takes a very long time but I'm not sure why. Normally, I wouldn't mind so much, but the files it handles are pretty large so need this needs to faster than 100kB a second save. Seriously slow. (old legacy system, band aid fix till it gets replaced...) Public Sub SaveToDisk(sPath) Dim oFS, oFile Dim nIndex If sPath = "" Or FileName = "" Then Exit Sub If Mid(sPath, Len(sPath)) <> "\" Then sPath = sPath & "\" '" Set oFS = Server.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") If Not oFS.FolderExists(sPath) Then Exit Sub Set oFile = oFS.CreateTextFile(sPath & FileName, True) For nIndex = 1 to LenB(FileData) oFile.Write Chr(AscB(MidB(FileData,nIndex,1))) Next oFile.Close End Sub I'm asking because there are plenty of WTF's in this code so I'm fighting those fires while getting some help on these ones.

  • how to avoid repeating code?

    - by helloWorld
    I have some technical question, I have repeating code in my work, and I want to get rid of it, so I know that in C++ it is not good idea to use macro, but instead I must use inline function, is it good idea to use this function as inline: list<Data>::iterator foo(int data){ if(dataExists(data)){ list<Data>::iterator i; for(i = Data.begin(); i != Data.end(); ++i){ if(i->getData() == data){ break; } return i; //here I have one more problem, what can I return if data doesn't exist? } I'm beginner, and I think that this function is very unsafe, can somebody please give me advice, how can I improve my code, thanks in advance P.S. what usually do You use to avoid repeating code?

Or how should this be done correctly ? In my case A is something like AllowLateBinding .. Could coerce callback help me?
