  • SQL SERVER – Introduction to Adaptive ETL Tool – How adaptive is your ETL?

    I am often reminded by the fact that BI/data warehousing infrastructure is very brittle and not very adaptive to change. There are lots of basic use cases where data needs to be frequently loaded into SQL Server or another database. What I have found is that as long as the sources and targets stay the same, SSIS or any other ETL tool for that matter does a pretty good job handling these types of scenarios. But what happens when you are faced with more challenging scenarios, where the data formats and possibly the data types of the source data are changing from customer to customer?  Let’s examine a real life situation where a health management company receives claims data from their customers in various source formats. Even though this company supplied all their customers with the same claims forms, they ended up building one-off ETL applications to process the claims for each customer. Why, you ask? Well, it turned out that the claims data from various regional hospitals they needed to process had slightly different data formats, e.g. “integer” versus “string” data field definitions.  Moreover the data itself was represented with slight nuances, e.g. “0001124” or “1124” or “0000001124” to represent a particular account number, which forced them, as I eluded above, to build new ETL processes for each customer in order to overcome the inconsistencies in the various claims forms.  As a result, they experienced a lot of redundancy in these ETL processes and recognized quickly that their system would become more difficult to maintain over time. So imagine for a moment that you could use an ETL tool that helps you abstract the data formats so that your ETL transformation process becomes more reusable. Imagine that one claims form represents a data item as a string – acc_no(varchar) – while a second claims form represents the same data item as an integer – account_no(integer). This would break your traditional ETL process as the data mappings are hard-wired.  But in a world of abstracted definitions, all you need to do is create parallel data mappings to a common data representation used within your ETL application; that is, map both external data fields to a common attribute whose name and type remain unchanged within the application. acc_no(varchar) is mapped to account_number(integer) expressor Studio first claim form schema mapping account_no(integer) is also mapped to account_number(integer) expressor Studio second claim form schema mapping All the data processing logic that follows manipulates the data as an integer value named account_number.   • General guidelines / workflow to convert or transfer video "professionally"?

    I'm an IT "professional" who sometimes has to deal with small video conversion / video cutting projects, and I'd like to learn "the right way" to do this. Every time I search Google, there's always a disaster for weird, low-maturity trialware, or random forums threads from 3-4 years ago indicating various antiquated method to do it. The big question is the following: What are the "general" guidelines and tools to transcode video into some efficient (lossless?) intermediary, for editing purposes, for the purpose of eventually re-encoding it after? It seems to me like even the simplest of formats and tasks are a disaster of endless trial & error, or expertise only known by hardened experts who have a swiss army kife of weird conversion tools that they use, almost as if mounting an attack against the project. Here are a few cases in point: Simple VOB files extracted from DVD footage can't be imported into Adobe Premiere directly. Virtualdub is an old software people keep recommending but doesn't seem to support newer formats. I don't even know how to tell with certainty which codecs a video has, and weather the image is interlaced or not, and what resolution and codecs I'm dealing with. Problems: Choosing a wrong interlace option which diminishes quality Choosing a wrong pixel aspect ratio (stretches the image) Choosing a wrong "project type" in Premiere causing footage to require scaling Being forced to use some weird program that will have any number of negative effects What I'm looking for: Books or "Real knowledge" on format conversions, recognized tools, etc. that aren't some random forum guides on how to deal with video formats. Workflow guidelines on identifying a format going from one format to another without problems as mentioned above. Documentation on what programs like Adobe Premiere can and can't do with regards to formats, so that I don't use a wrench as a hammer. TL;DR How should you convert or "prepare" a video file to ensure it will be supported by Premiere for editing? Is premiere a suitable program to handle cropping, encoding, or should other tools be used for this, when making a video montage from a variety of source formats? What are some good books to read that specifically deal with converting videos that use any number of codecs?

    We have our own apt/deb repository with a handful of packages where we want to control the version. Crucially this includes puppet, which can be sensitive to versions being different. I want our desktops to only get puppet from our repository, but also for people to be able to add their own PPAs, enable backports etc. The current problem we have is backports on Ubuntu Lucid.   • apt-mirror does not mirror the i18n directory

    I need to setup a local Ubuntu mirror so the whole network doesn't need to hit remote servers in order to update and install new packages. Following a brief tutorial found here, I managed to get a server up and running that correctly mirrors packages from the main and restricted categories. However, when I call apt-get update on a client, I get a couple of errors such as : Ign http://192.168.1.18 karmic/main Translation-fr Ign http://192.168.1.18 karmic/restricted Translation-fr Checking back on the server, I see that apt-mirror only took the binary-amd64 directory of the mirror, and didn't take i18n that would provide Translation-fr. The manpage for apt-mirror doesn't say anything about i18n, and Google is of no help either. How do I properly mirror i18n?   • Utilize different region format for a single application on Mac OS X

    Is there a way to have a single Mac OS X application utilize a different region format than the system default? For example, I'd like to keep my system operating in English with US date formats but have my lesson planning software utilize French date formats. If I put my entire computer into French mode, I get the desired results, but I'd rather keep my entire system in US mode and have the Planbook application work with French region formats. I know about Language Switcher but that only allow per-app selections of localizations to be used, not which date format to use. I don't care about having the French localization of Planbook appear, I just want the date format to be French.

  • Why does Windows spooler require an administrator account?

    Does anyone know what changes I might need to make to allow restricted users to print using a printer configured for spooling? My Windows XP SP3 system currently requires me to use an Admin account for printing if the printer is configured to spool documents before printing. If the printer is configured for direct printing it works for all accounts. This used to work and some months back it just stopped, and I can't pin down why. The printer, which is an HP PSC 1200 (an old printer) itself is configured for Everyone to have Print authority and my specific (restricted) account to have Full authority, that is Print, Manage Printers and Manager Documents. My HDD is locked down for restricted users given them only read authority to the entire file system except their data directories, which is how I have run my systems for years. I assume there may be a directory somewhere that I need to allow users to write to.

  • Can't Install php5-dev on Ubuntu 12.04 running OpenVZ

    I'm trying to fetch the php apc package using pecl and running into a problem that I believe may be caused by OpenVZ. To do so I need php5-dev. When I try to install it via apt-get, I get this: php5-dev : Depends: libssl-dev but it is not going to be installed Depends: libtool (>= 2.2) but it is not going to be installed As I try to manually install dependencies (without success), I believe I've identified libc6-dev as the culprit. libc6-dev : Depends: libc6 (= 2.15-0ubuntu10.2) but 2.15-0ubuntu10+openvz0 is to be installed I have libc6 installed on the system. If it's any help here is my sources.list: deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise main restricted universe deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-updates main restricted universe deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security main restricted universe multiverse deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu precise partner This is a very frustrating problem, as I have other instances of Ubuntu 12.04 running just fine elsewhere (though not on OpenVZ).

When/why should I choose one (say, 7-Zip) over another (say, ZIP)? Why does the trend above appear to hold, even though all of these are portable formats?     My OS is Ubuntu 12.04.1 Desktop version (32bit). I want to create a new group called restricted which allows its users to use Audio devices and Video devices only, and I want to add a user called visitors to that group. By using Users and Groups, I was able to create a new user account called visitors, and a new group called restricted. But I can't figure out how to add those settings to the group restricted, and add the visitors user account to that group. I tried Google-ing, but every search result was about accessing root privileges and all, and I couldn't find answers on this specific topic.

  • Can't install Ubuntu Software Center

    I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 32bit with Gnome 3.8 but am missing the Ubuntu Software Center. I tried to install it via terminal: $ sudo apt-get install software-center But that tells me that dependencies are not met The following packages have unmet dependencies: software-center : Depends: gir1.2-webkit-3.0 but it is not going to be installed gir1.2-webkit-3.0 depends on gir1.2-javascriptcoregtk-3.0 of version 1.10.2-0ubuntu2. But that package is only available as version 2.0.4-2~ubuntu13.04. I am missing the Ubuntu Software Center as well as the Update Manager and the packages update-notifyer and ubuntu-release-upgrader-gtk. How can I install the packages with correct dependencies?
