• How hard is it for a .NET programmer to learn Objective C and Cocoa?

  Hi, I'm trying to build a dual platform application for a company of my own I'm trying to start at night. I have the .NET version done, but have not finished the UI part. I'm thinking of buying some 3rd party controls. If I buy these controls, however, they clearly will only work in my Windows version. I'm wondering if I should try to do the UI in GTK# and use Mono with CocoaSharp or just build the thing in MS technology and teach myself the Mac side? I'm just really unfamiliar with the Mac world and am wondering how much of a learning curve there might be. I've thought perhaps of rewriting my core logic in Ruby or Python. This why I could use the .NET version with .NET controls and presumably hook the same code up on the Mac. It's an educational app targeted at consumers. As such, it shouldn't require a lot of technical sophistication to install.

• Combining features from other projects in an ASP.NET MVC application

  Hello, I am writing an ASP.NET MVC application that combines a set of features from existing applications. The new application is suppose to use UI features and logic created (especially for this purpose) in the existing applications. For that reason I wanted to create in the existing applications some kind of a "blackbox" that I will be able to drop in my new application along with a matching connection string, and it will work independently, binding data on it's own. I thought about using partial views, but I am having trouble with passing the model data to it, since the controller of the new application should not know about the model of the existing applications. I can not use ASP.NET WebForms, since my application should be a "postback-less" application, and ASP.NET AJAX toolkit or frameworks alike are out of the question. • How to represent datetime of deifferent time zomes in C#

  Hi. I have a .NET WebService (written in C#), that is supposed to serve people around the world. With each request I get the user's datetime in his own time zone with the format : "yyyy/MM/dd HH:mm ZZZZ". I have to convert the string to something representing the original date and time and specifying the time zone in GMT. I have to make some logical calculations and keep it in the database. The regular DateTime doe's not support this. it does not have a property specifying the time zone. When I try to convert my string into DateTime - it simply converts it to my local time. I do not want to keep my time in UTC, because I have some logic that has to run per user by his own time. Does anyone know a C# class that handles this? Thanks!

• Directory file size calculation - how to make it faster?

  Using C#, I am finding the total size of a directory. The logic is this way : Get the files inside the folder. Sum up the total size. Find if there are sub directories. Then do a recursive search. I tried one another way to do this too : Using FSO (obj.GetFolder(path).Size). There's not much of difference in time in both these approaches. Now the problem is, I have tens of thousands of files in a particular folder and its taking like atleast 2 minute to find the folder size. Also, if I run the program again, it happens very quickly (5 secs). I think the windows is caching the file sizes. Is there any way I can bring down the time taken when I run the program first time??

  Hi All, I am developing a web-app where I want to provide a download link to users - so they can download a zip file from my server. Now, my requirement is that I want to execute some processing logic contained in a servlet before displaying the file dialog to the user for 'zip' files. So If I write <a href="abc.zip".......> then it opens a file dialog asking the user to select the location where this file can be saved But if I want a servlet's doGet method to do some preprocessing - say like building the zip file , then how can I first call the servlet and then open the file dialog. • Is there a way to determine the Variance of an Interface / Delegate in C# 4.0?

  So now that we have generic Covariance and Contravariance on interfaces and delegates in C#, I was just curious if given a Type, you can figure out the covariance/contravariance of its generic arguments. I started trying to write my own implementation, which would look through all of the methods on a given type and see if the return types and or arguments match the types in the generic arguments. The problem is that even if I have this: public interface IFoo<T> { void DoSomething(T item); } using my logic, it LOOKS like it should be contravariant, but since we didn't actually specify: public interface IFoo<in T> { void DoSomething(T item); } (the in parameter) it isn't actually contravariant. Which leads to my question: Is there a way to determine the variance of generic parameters?

  Hi, Assume I have an order_dummy table where order_dummy_id, order_id, user_id, book_id, author_id are stored. You may complain the logic of my table but I somehow need to do it that way. I want to execute following queries. SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 AND book_id = 1 ORDER BY `order_dummy_id` DESC LIMIT 1 SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 AND book_id = 2 ORDER BY `order_dummy_id` DESC LIMIT 1 SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 AND book_id = 3 ORDER BY `order_dummy_id` DESC LIMIT 1 Please keep in mind that several numbers of same book is included in one order. Therefore, I list order_dummy_id by descending and limit 1 so only LATEST ORDER of A BOOK is shown. But my goal is to show other books in that way in one table. I used group by like this ... SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 GROUP BY book_id but it only shows order_dummy_id with ascending result. I have no idea anymore. Looking forward your kindness help!

• Android equivalent work-around for View.getX() before API 11?

  I'm using the getX() and getY() method on a view for some special dragging logic (not animation, i.e. I never use setX/Y methods, I just need the getters to check). However, I've come to realize that these are only available post-API 11. The docs for getX() say that is it the addition of the 'left' property and the 'translationX' property. All well and good, except get/setTranslationX() is only around since API 11 as well. I was wondering if there was any knowledge on what this method returns behind the scenes, so I could maybe put in a workaround. Thanks for any help - Chase

• Why does $('#id') return true if id doesn't exist?

  I always wondered why jQuery returns true if I'm trying to find elements by id selector that doesnt exist in the DOM structure. Like this: <div id="one">one</div> <script> console.log( !!$('#one') ) // prints true console.log( !!$('#two') ) // is also true! (empty jQuery object) console.log( !!document.getElementById('two') ) // prints false </script> I know I can use !!$('#two').length since length === 0 if the object is empty, but it seems logical to me that a selector would return the element if found, otherwise null (like the native document.getElementById does). F.ex, this logic can't be done in jQuery: var div = $('#two') || $('<div id="two"></div>'); Wouldnt it be more logical if the ID selector returned null if not found? anyone?

  As you know, in Eclipse you can turn on "Unnecessary 'else' statement" check that will trigger on if-then-else with premature return. And, from my experience, there are two most possible situations when use such statement: 1) Pre-check: if (validate(arg1)) { return false; } doLotOfStuff(); 2) Post-check: doLotOfStuff(); if (condition) { return foo; } else { return bar; } In the second case, if the trigger is on, Eclipse will suggest you to change the code to: doLotOfStuff(); if (condition) { return foo; } return bar; However, I think that the return with else statement is more readable as it is like direct mapping of business logic. So I am curios if this "Unnecessary 'else' statement" code convention is widespread or else statement is more preferable?

• Design pattern for extending Android's activities?

  While programming on Android, I end up writing a parent activity which is extended by several others. A bit like ListActivity. My parent activity extends Activity. if I intend to use a Map or a List, I can't use my parent activity as superclass - the child activity can only extend one activity obviously. As such I end up writing my parent activities with the same logic for Activity, ListActivity, MapActivity and so forth. What am I looking for is some sort of trait functionality/design pattern which would help in this case. Any suggestions?

• Rails - Active Record :conditions overrides :select

  I have a fairly large model and I want to retrieve only a select set of fields for each record in order to keep the JSON string I am building small. Using :select with find works great but my key goal is to use conditional logic with an associated model. Is the only way to do this really with a lamda in a named scope? I'm dreading that perhaps unnecessarily but I'd like to understand if there is a way to make the :select work with a condition. This works: @sites = Site.find :all, :select => 'id,foo,bar' When I try this: @sites = Site.find :all, :select => 'id,foo,bar', :include => [:relatedmodel], :conditions => ["relatedmodel.type in (?)", params[:filters]] The condition works but each record includes all of the Site attributes which makes my JSON string way way too large. • long running process in asp.net C#

  Hello All, I have a web application that has a long running (resource intensive) process in the code behind and the end output is a pdf file (images to pdf conversion tool) It runs fine..and since I am on a dedicated server, it is not at all a problem with respect to resources right now. However, I wonder that the system would reach its resource limits if, there are more than 20 users processing at a time. I have seen services online where the user enters their email and the processes are, I suppose, queued in the background and the results emailed with the 1st in 1st out method. Can someone please give me a start on how to implement this kind of logic in asp.net applications using C#? Thanks a lot in advance, Prasad.

I think I must use 1 0 logic to work this out right ? • Proper abstraction of the database tier in a 3 tier system?

  Hello, I am creating a 3 tier application. Basically it goes Client - (through optional server to be a thin-client) - Business Logic - Database Layer And basically making it so that there is never any skipping around. As such, I want for all of the SQL queries and such to be in the Database Layer. Well, now I'm a bit confused. I made a few static classes to start off the database tier but what should I do for the database connections? Should I just create a new database connection anytime I enter the Database Layer or would that be wasteful? Does Connection.Open() take time whenever you have a ConnectionPool? To me, it just feels wrong for the Business tier to have to pass in a IdbConnection object to the Database tier. It seems like the Database tier should handle all of that DB-specific code. What do you think? How can I do it the proper way while staying practical?

( Don't laugh I know it is very basic :) ) Item -> interface Folder -> class File -> class In folder class, can I create an arraylist of Item to store files information? ArrayList<Item> info = ArrayList<Item>(); Or should I use Folder Arraylist?   As of right now, I am still shaky on classes, so I don't want to use any classes for my site. I'm still practicing with classes. But how can I implement the MVC idea without classes? Would this work for a MVC? index.php (the view) index_controller.php index_model.php Is this right for what a MVC should be? View: show html, css, forms Controller: get $_POST from forms and any data from the user, get info from db Model: do all the functions, insert/delete in db, etc Basically separate the HTML/css for the view, all the data collecting for the controller, and the logic for the model. And just connect them all using require_once.

  I have written something like this pretty easily in C# (string GetUrl(new { controller = "foo", action = "bar", baz = "fnord" }), based on the existing capabilities of the XmlRouteCollection class provided by the ASP.NET MVC framework (why it isn't there out of the box is beyond me; the additional required code was trivial). I am now faced with a JSP project, and I need the same ability: centralize the logic for generating all URLs in one place, based on a list of routing rules. Is there some code somewhere I could reuse/adapt to do this in Java? It seems like a common enough requirement, but google proved surprisingly unhelpful in finding something like this.

I have this query SELECT type_id, type_name FROM room_type WHERE id NOT IN (SELECT room_type FROM reservation WHERE start_date >= '$start_date' AND end_date <= '$end_date') What the query does is it selects the rooms that are not booked between the start date and end date. Also, as you can see from the reservation table, we also have 'number of rooms booked between the two dates' factor also... I need to add this 'no.of booked rooms between the two dates' factor also in to the query... The query should return the type of rooms for which at least one room is free between the two dates. I worked out the logic but just can't represent it as a query....! How will you do this...? Thanks for your suggestions..!

  I just built an application using ASP.NET MVC. The programmers at my company want to build all future modules using n-Tiered (Presentation Layer, Business Logic Layer, Data Access Layer) architecture. I am not the programmer and need to know why this makes sense? Do I have to completely rewrite the entire code or can it be converted? We are building an HRIS system with Business Intelligence. Somebody please explain why or why not this approach does or does not make sense.

• For what programs are Objective C and Ruby ideal on the Mac?

  Hi, as a Mac outsider it seems that two popular programming languages on the Mac appear to be Objective C and Ruby. From what I understand the main API Cocoa seems to be written in and optimized for Objective C, but it is also possible to use Ruby for that. Are there different areas where each language is ideal, for example, I could imagine Objective C could be ideal for a GUI layer, or standalone desktop app, and Ruby could be good for web services etc. What about classic business logic, or data access layers? What language would be a good choice for a library of services for example? Can we write a library in one language and link to it from a main program written in the other language? If I wanted to write a layered enterprise application using domain driven design and dependency injection which languages could support each concerns? Are things like DDD and DI common amongst Mac devs? Just a curious outsider.

• MonoRail - Clearing value on edit form submission doesn't trigger validation

  Hey, In a MonoRail app I have an add/edit view. On add if I don't pick a value for a dropdown I get a validation error and am forced to pick a value. However, if I then edit that same item and reset the dropdown back to the first item ("Select an Item", "0"), it saves and doesn't say it was invalid. Debugging the entity sent back to the server, I can see that it's sending the original value for the dropdown instead of the new value of "0". What's going on here? The first thing I would expect is that it would trigger the validation since the dropdown value isn't set. The second thing I would expect is that it would send the new value I send, not the original. It does send the new value if I change it to another value, but it's as if it has internal logic that says - "I'm updating this entity and a new value was not passed, just don't change the entity value." • Passing ViewData to PartialView returned from using Html.Action

  I want to embed a partial view in an ASP.NET MVC page by returning it from an action method. In my base view, I would have: <%= Html.Action("MyPartialViewAction") %> My controller would have an action method like: [ChildActionOnly] public ActionResult MyPartialViewAction() { return PartialView("MyPartialView"); } I expected the returned partial view (MyPartialView) to have access to the ViewData that was set in the base page's controller action but that doesn't appear to be the case. If I insert the partial view by using the following in my base view it works: <% Html.RenderPartial("MyPartialView") %> I don't want to do that though because I want my "MyPartialViewAction" to execute logic to determine WHICH partial view to return.
