  I have debated posting this or not. My initial thought was not to post about it. My thought was not to blog about it thinking that I would spare myself the embarrassment if I wasn't awarded. A little paranoid, I know, but these are paranoid times. After more reflection, I realize that there is no embarrassment in not winning. There is great honor in being nominated. Instead of worrying about not winning in the end, I need to enjoy the moment and enjoy being nominated. This is an extreme honor. I would to hear your stories of being nominated? • NetBeans 6.9 Released

  Great news, the first NetBeans release that has been conducted fully under the stewardship of Oracle has now been released. NetBeans IDE 6.9 introduces the JavaFX Composer, a visual layout tool for building JavaFX GUI applications, similar to the Swing GUI builder for Java SE applications. With the JavaFX Composer, developers can quickly build, visually edit, and debug Rich Internet Applications (RIA) and bind components to various data sources, including Web services. The NetBeans 6.9 release also features OSGi interoperability for NetBeans Platform applications and support for developing OSGi bundles with Maven. With support for OSGi and Swing standards, the NetBeans Platform now supports the standard UI toolkit and the standard module system, providing a unique combination of standards for modular, rich-client development. Additional noteworthy features in this release include support for JavaFX SDK 1.3, PHP Zend framework, and Ruby on Rails 3.0; as well as improvements to the Java Editor, Java Debugger, issue tracking, and more. • Suggested ways of collecting 1000's of links to MSM media articles

  I'm currently running a modified Wordpress site that is uniquely designed to simply publish links to other sites, similar to The Drudge Report. Right now I have a few dozen Google Alerts setup and go through each result manually and if it matches a few niche keywords I'm working with, then I add a link to the article to my site. I do the manual checking because sometimes Google Alerts finds links to sites that belong to service providers, organizations, or products, but all I want are mainstream news articles. So my question is there a more efficient - and ideally automated - way to go about performing highly qualitative searches and aggregating such links?

• What do you do about content when someone asks you to build a website

  I am an experienced asp.net developer and asp.net mvc and I have my own CMS that I have written but starting to think there should be another approach. When someone asks you to develop them a website how do you develop it so that they can add pictures,slideshows, content, news items, diary events. On a side note do you give them a design for the home page and inner page and thats it. I'm just thinking if they turn around and say 6 months down the line I want a jquery slideshow on the right hand side of this page how do you or CMS's handle it?

• SSMS Tools Pack 2.1.0 is out. Added support for SQL Server 2012 RC0.

Because of the support for regions in SSMS 2012 the regions and debug sections feature has been removed from SSMS Tools Pack for SQL Server 2012.   In the last few months since I started learning F# I have begin to notice an increase in the number of people blogging about the language. Sure, it could just be that I am noticing it more because I am actively looking out for questions and blog posts, but even in my day to day reading of Code Project Daily News and Stack Overflow questions there seems to be increased activity around the language. So what sparked this post? Well, today today I logged in and saw that the latest podcast by DNR was on F# and then immediately afterwards I received an email from CodeProject with a great article comparing F# and Scala. Currently, as of this blog posting (21 May 2010) F# is ranked on the tiobe site at position 43, but I am willing to put money on it that in the next few tiobe ratings this ranking will continue to rise till F# will be a top 20.

• 0.00006103515625 GB of RAM. Is .NET MicroFramework part of Windows CE?

  The .NET MicroFramework claims to work on 64K RAM and has list of compatible targets vendors. At the same time, same vendors who ship hardware and create Board Support Packages (vendors like Adeneo) keep releasing something named Windows 7 CE BSP for the same hardware targets. Obviously the OS as heavy as WinCE needs more than 64K RAM. So, somehow .NET MicroFramework is relevant to WinCE, but how ? Is it part of bigger OS or is it base of it, or are both mutually exclusive ? Background: 0.00006103515625 GByte of RAM is same as 64Kbyte of RAM.   That disconcerting news is what Mark Hachman is reporting for Read Write Web. One can more or less safely assume that Microsoft will come up with its own antivirus software for Windows RT. Still, this is a rather unusual state of affairs; why is the company doing this? • Access Control Service v2

  A Resource-STS (others call it RP-STS or federation gateway) is a necessity for non-trivial federated identity scenarios. ADFS v2 does an excellent job in fulfilling that role – but (as of now) you have to run ADFS on-premise. The Azure Access Control Service is a Resource-STS in the cloud (with all the usual scalability/availability) promises. Unfortunately a lot of (the more interesting) features in ACS v1 had to be cut due to constrained time/resources. The good news is that ACS v2 is now in CTP and brings back a lot of the missing features (like WS* support) and adds some really sweet new ones (out of the box federation with Google, Facebook, LiveID – and OpenId in general). On a related note – ACS v2 works out of the box with StarterSTS – simply choose the ADFS v2 option and point the management portal to the StarterSTS WS-Federation metadata endpoint. Have fun ;)

• Deleting ASP.NET application subdirectories causes application recycle!

  This may not be news to most people, but was definitely a shock to me!   In the .NET 2.x framework a "feature" was implemented where by an ASP.NET application is automatically recycled if any subdirectory is deleted. This was apparently implemented to prevent stale content from appearing on a site.   The unfortunate side effect of this "feature" is that when using the "InProc" model for session management, all session data is lost if a subdirectory is deleted.   For those who progammatically may be adding/deleting directories within their application as inherent functionality, this causes a rather large problem.   The solution? Create your folder(s) which may be programmatically deleted outside of the root folder for the application. Alernatively, utilize a file based structure vs. folders since deleting files does not result in the same issue.

• 301 Redirects for regional variants of a homepage

  I am planning on implementing a website which has regional homepage variants. For Example: mycompany.com/europe mycompany.com/us The rest of the site is region agnostic and content will continue such as: mycompany.com/news mycompany.com/about-us etc For homepage (.com) requests, I plan on redirecting users to the correct homepage variant (via 301). If I cannot determine the correct one, I will fallback to redirecting them to the US homepage (/us). From an SEO point of view, firstly is this ok? or should I be doing anything additional to this for making search engines aware of the regional differences? As crawlers are region agnostic, I plan on directing them to the US page with a 301, or should I have something on the .com page which they use? Being that the regional homepage's will likely be the most visited pages, they should show up in result sitelinks when searching for mycompany (which I think is a good thing). Apologies for the slightly open question - I know anything SEO related is more opinion/best practice than fact but am purely looking for advice.
