  • Save object states in .data or attr - Performance vs CSS?

    - by Neysor
In response to my answer yesterday about rotating an Image, Jamund told me to use .data() instead of .attr() First I thought that he is right, but then I thought about a bigger context... Is it always better to use .data() instead of .attr()? I looked in some other posts like what-is-better-data-or-attr or jquery-data-vs-attrdata The answers were not satisfactory for me... So I moved on and edited the example by adding CSS. I thought it might be useful to make a different Style on each image if it rotates. My style was the following: .rp[data-rotate="0"] { border:10px solid #FF0000; } .rp[data-rotate="90"] { border:10px solid #00FF00; } .rp[data-rotate="180"] { border:10px solid #0000FF; } .rp[data-rotate="270"] { border:10px solid #00FF00; } Because design and coding are often separated, it could be a nice feature to handle this in CSS instead of adding this functionality into JavaScript. Also in my case the data-rotate is like a special state which the image currently has. So in my opinion it make sense to represent it within the DOM. I also thought this could be a case where it is much better to save with .attr() then with .data(). Never mentioned before in one of the posts I read. But then i thought about performance. Which function is faster? I built my own test following: <!DOCTYPE HTML> <html> <head> <title>test</title> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.1/jquery.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> function runfirst(dobj, dname){ console.log("runfirst "+dname); console.time(dname+"-attr"); for(i=0;i<10000;i++){ dobj.attr("data-test","a"+i); } console.timeEnd(dname+"-attr"); console.time(dname+"-data"); for(i=0;i<10000;i++){ dobj.data("data-test","a"+i); } console.timeEnd(dname+"-data"); } function runlast(dobj, dname){ console.log("runlast "+dname); console.time(dname+"-data"); for(i=0;i<10000;i++){ dobj.data("data-test","a"+i); } console.timeEnd(dname+"-data"); console.time(dname+"-attr"); for(i=0;i<10000;i++){ dobj.attr("data-test","a"+i); } console.timeEnd(dname+"-attr"); } $().ready(function() { runfirst($("#rp4"),"#rp4"); runfirst($("#rp3"),"#rp3"); runlast($("#rp2"),"#rp2"); runlast($("#rp1"),"#rp1"); }); </script> </head> <body> <div id="rp1">Testdiv 1</div> <div id="rp2" data-test="1">Testdiv 2</div> <div id="rp3">Testdiv 3</div> <div id="rp4" data-test="1">Testdiv 4</div> </body> </html> It should also show if there is a difference with a predefined data-test or not. One result was this: runfirst #rp4 #rp4-attr: 515ms #rp4-data: 268ms runfirst #rp3 #rp3-attr: 505ms #rp3-data: 264ms runlast #rp2 #rp2-data: 260ms #rp2-attr: 521ms runlast #rp1 #rp1-data: 284ms #rp1-attr: 525ms So the .attr() function did always need more time than the .data() function. This is an argument for .data() I thought. Because performance is always an argument! Then I wanted to post my results here with some questions, and in the act of writing I compared with the questions Stack Overflow showed me (similar titles) And true enough, there was one interesting post about performance I read it and run their example. And now I am confused! This test showed that .data() is slower then .attr() !?!! Why is that so? First I thought it is because of a different jQuery library so I edited it and saved the new one. But the result wasn't changing... So now my questions to you: Why are there some differences in the performance in these two examples? Would you prefer to use data- HTML5 attributes instead of data, if it represents a state? Although it wouldn't be needed at the time of coding? Why - Why not? Now depending on the performance: Would performance be an argument for you using .attr() instead of data, if it shows that .attr() is better? Although data is meant to be used for .data()? UPDATE 1: I did see that without overhead .data() is much faster. Misinterpreted the data :) But I'm more interested in my second question. :) Would you prefer to use data- HTML5 attributes instead of data, if it represents a state? Although it wouldn't be needed at the time of coding? Why - Why not? Are there some other reasons you can think of, to use .attr() and not .data()? e.g. interoperability? because .data() is jquery style and HTML Attributes can be read by all... UPDATE 2: As we see from T.J Crowder's speed test in his answer attr is much faster then data! which is again confusing me :) But please! Performance is an argument, but not the highest! So give answers to my other questions please too!

  • Crystal Reports from Access DB in FrontPage (plus RealPlayer integration)

    - by Jason
Hey guys, My boss has some interesting requirements for his next project and insists that we try to implement some Crystal Reports on our Access database (on his computer) into a FrontPage document (for ease of maintenance). After that, he wants an MP3 to be embedded using a RealPlayer widget because that's the only one that he likes. I'm not really sure how to do any of this. What's the best way to go about this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Sugar CRM integration with Java - How to add relationship

    - by Arun P Johny
Hi, I'm trying to integrate Sugar CRM with one of my projects. I'm using Apache Axis as my SOAP client. I've created the Sugar CRM client Stub classes using Apache Axis. I'm able to login and add Leads, Opportunities, Accounts and Contacts. But I'm unable to add a relation ship between my Account and Opportunity. I've found following method in the SugarsoapPortType port.set_relationship(session, module_name, module_id, link_field_name, related_ids, name_value_list, delete) but I cannot understand the different parameters required by this method. Most of the online documents suggests a simple way as given below $result = $client->call('set_relationship',array("session"=>$session _id,array("module1"=>"Emails","module1_id"=>"<module1_id>","module2"=>"Accounts","module2_id"=> "<module2_id>"))); how can I achieve this using Java Thanks

  • UML interface: URL iframe integration

    - by Bernd
I have two applications, A and B, both with a web-based user interface. Both applications are integrated via an URL iframe mechanism. A user can click on a link in application A and then gets the UI of application B as am iframe in application A. Now, since both applications have an interface between each other (do they?): Who provides the interface and who requires the interface, in the UML sense? What is the main information flow on this interface?

  • Windows Azure Queues, WCF, MSMQ integration

    - by user104295
Hi there, I have a scenario where I need a desktop console app to communicate with a Windows Azure Queue... the most important thing is that the message is received by the server eventually. Also, the desktop app may be disconnected from the Internet sometimes. In the traditional WCF+MSMQ approach you'd be able to send a message which would be cached in MSMQ until MSMQ could reach the Server's MSMQ and send the message. What's the equivalent when Windows Azure is the server-side? Is it possible for the same approach to be used, where MSMQ just communicates with a Windows Azure Queue rather than an MSMQ on a Windows Server? Maybe Windows Azure Queue is the wrong approach? I have heard about something called message buffer, but don't know what this is (yet!). thanks for your help Kris

  • Digital signature integration with software written in java

    - by Serkan Kasapbasi
hi everyone, i'm extremely rookie on this security field, so please forgive if my questions are dumb. i am asked to convert and migrate couple "Lotus Forms" forms to our software that is written in java. One thing in forms that bother me is digital signatures. These forms can be signed by digital signatures, probably generated by "Silanis Approve-it". as i have said before, i dont have much knowledge about this technology. and strangely couldnt find any tutorial or example of integrating digital signature and java. So what are the possibilities here ? how my code read a digital signature, sign a document with this signature? There should be an API or something that is provided by vendors right :)

  • Minimum needs to Deploy SQL Server Integration Services 2008

    - by Tim
Hi, I would like to run SSIS 2008 packages on a server that does not have SQL Server 2008 installed on it. I have a simple package to test the concept, but it fails to execute. The return code is 9020 which I have not seen listed as a return code elsewhere. I have copied the following files to the test server that does not have SQL Server 2008 installed on it: SelfContainedSample.dtsConfig Package.dtsx DTExec.exe I am attempting to run the package using a batch file. The line in the batch file that runs the package is: "%dtexecloc%\dtexec.exe" /FILE "%packagefolder%\Package.dtsx" /CONFIGFILE "%configfolder\SelfContainedSample.dtsConfig" /CHECKPOINTING OFF /REPORTING E %logfile% set rc=%errorlevel% I am wondering if there are other requirements that need to be satified to run an SSIS 2008 package on a server that does not have SQL Server 2008 on it? .NET Runtime? SSIS 2008 runtime? Please share your advice if you have a solution or have met this issue before. Thanks, Tim

  • Is it possible to use ASP.NET Dynamic Data and SubSonic 3?

    - by James
Is it possible to use ASP.NET Dynamic Data with SubSonic 3 in-place of Linq to SQL classes or the Entity Framework? MetaModel.RegisterContext() throws an exception if you use the context class that SubSonic generates. I thought I remembered coming across a SubSonic/Dynamic Data example back before SubSonic 3 was released but I can't find it now. Has anyone been able to get this to work?

  • .NET TDD with a Database and ADO.NET Entity Framework - Integration Tests

    - by Brian
Hello, I'm using ADO.NET entity framework, and am using an AdventureWorks database attached to my local database server. For unit testing, what approaches have people taken to work with a database? Obviously, the database has to be in a pre-defined state of change so that the tests can have some isolation from each other... so I need to be able to run through the inserts and updates, then rollback either between tests or after the batch of tests are done. Any advice? Thanks.

  • Hudson, C++ and UnitTest++

    - by Gilad Naor
Has anyone used Hudson as a Continuous-Integration server for a C++ project using UnitTest++ as a testing library? How exactly did you set it up? I know there have been several questions on Continuous Integration before, but I hope this one has a narrower scope. EDIT: I'll clarify a bit on what I'm looking for. I already have the build set to fail when the Unit-Tests fail. I'm looking for something like Hudson's JUnit support. UnitTest++ can create XML reports (See here). So, perhaps if someone knows how to translate these reports to be JUnit compatible, Hudson will know how to eat it up?

  • What permissions needed to connect to SQL Server Integration Services

    - by rwmnau
I need to allow a consultant to connect to SSIS on a SQL Server 2008 box without making him a local administrator. If I add him to the local administrators group, he can connect to SSIS just fine, but it seems that I can't grant him enough permissions through SQL Server to give him these rights without being a local admin. I've added him to every role on the server, every database role in MSDB shy of DBO, and he's still not able to connect. I don't see any SSIS-related Windows groups on the server - Is membership in the Local Administrators group really required to connect to the SSIS instance on a SQL Server? It seems like there is somewhere I should be able to grant "SSIS Admin" rights to a user (even if it's a Windows account and not a SQL account), but I can't find that place. UPDATE: I've found an MSDN article (See the section titled "Eliminating the 'Access if Denied' Error") that describes how to resolve problem, but even after following the stepsI'm still not able to connect. Just wanted to add it to the discussion

  • Set and Verify the Retention Value for Change Data Capture

    - by AllenMWhite
Last summer I set up Change Data Capture for a client to track changes to their application database to apply those changes to their data warehouse. The client had some issues a short while back and felt they needed to increase the retention period from the default 3 days to 5 days. I ran this query to make that change: sp_cdc_change_job @job_type='cleanup', @retention=7200 The value 7200 represents the number of minutes in a period of 5 days. All was well, but they recently asked how they can verify...(read more)

  • Google Maps integration with JSON - CircularReferenceError

    - by JZ
I'm working on Rails 3.0.0.beta2, following Advanced Rails Recipes "Recipe #32, Mark locations on a Google Map" and I hit a road block. The following code is returning a "ActiveSupport::JSON::Encoding::CircularReferenceError" "object references itself" at line 3. This code represents the /layouts/maps.html.erb file <% if @maps -%> <script type="text/javascript"> var maps = <%= @maps.to_json %>; </script> <% end -%> This is my first attempt at rendering JSON, and I don't know how to debug this problem. Do you have experience with this? What could cause this problem? Thank you in advance!

  • Django Comments and Users integration

    - by Patrick
    Hi folks, I am new to django. I am trying to use django.contrib.comments, I saw the table in the database like this, but how can I integrate it with user_id, user_photos, user_name, user_email....and those things with the django commenting system? I also tried to use thread-comments, but I can't configure it properly, is the django threadedcomments table similar to following ? Please let me know if any of you have done this before....all I need is a user login, and post comments, and then show list of comments with users' profile photos and username, as well as there comments. I think shouldn't be that hard. Thank you very much again. +-----------------+--------------+------+-----+---------+----------------+ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra | +-----------------+--------------+------+-----+---------+----------------+ | id | int(11) | NO | PRI | NULL | auto_increment | | content_type_id | int(11) | NO | MUL | NULL | | | object_pk | longtext | NO | | NULL | | | site_id | int(11) | NO | MUL | NULL | | | user_id | int(11) | YES | MUL | NULL | | | user_name | varchar(50) | NO | | NULL | | | user_email | varchar(75) | NO | | NULL | | | user_url | varchar(200) | NO | | NULL | | | comment | longtext | NO | | NULL | | | submit_date | datetime | NO | | NULL | | | ip_address | char(15) | YES | | NULL | | | is_public | tinyint(1) | NO | | NULL | | | is_removed | tinyint(1) | NO | | NULL | | +-----------------+--------------+------+-----+---------+----------------+

  • What are the algorithms that are used for working with large data in popular web applications

    - by Moss Farmer
I am looking for some well known algorithms that can be considered while handling very large amount of data.(Edit- By large amount of data I refer to records in a database excluding blobs). These algorithms if not in totality but in parts may be used in big web applications like Twitter, Last.fm , Amazon ,etc. Specifically, I'm looking for names or links to such algorithms. My primary interest lies in developing a very deep understanding on working with large database records and writing efficient code for working with the same.

  • rest and client rights integration, and backbone.js

    - by Francois
I started to be more and more interested in the REST architecture style and client side development and I was thinking of using backbone.js on the client and a REST API (using ASP.NET Web API) for a little meeting management application. One of my requirements is that users with admin rights can edit meetings and other user can only see them. I was then wondering how to integrate the current user rights in the response for a given resource? My problem is beyond knowing if a user is authenticated or not, I want to know if I need to render the little 'edit' button next to the meeting (let's say I'm listing the current meetings in a grid) or not. Let's say I'm GETing /api/meetings and this is returning a list of meetings with their respective individual URI. How can I add if the user is able to edit this resource or not? This is an interesting passage from one of Roy's blog posts: A REST API should be entered with no prior knowledge beyond the initial URI (bookmark) and set of standardized media types that are appropriate for the intended audience (i.e., expected to be understood by any client that might use the API). From that point on, all application state transitions must be driven by client selection of server-provided choices that are present in the received representations or implied by the user’s manipulation of those representations It states that all transitions must be driven by the choices that are present in the representation. Does that mean that I can add an 'editURI' and a 'deleteURI' to each of the meeting i'm returning? if this information is there I can render the 'edit' button and if it's not there I just don't? What's the best practices on how to integrate the user's rights in the entity's representation? Or is this a super bad idea and another round trip is needed to fetch that information?

  • How do I pass a string or data object between two view controllers?

    - by Jonathan
In my last question i asked how to best send a string from one view controller to another, both which were on a navigation stack: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2898860/pass-string-from-tableviewcontroller-to-viewcontroller-in-navigation-stack However I just realised I can either pass the path to the file in the app's document's folder as the first (the table view) has already accessed the data in the file should I pass viewcontroller the data to the pushed VC?

  • SVN Externals in a different SCM

    - by Sean Chambers
At a previous workplace we used svn externals to update dependent projects when a shared component was updated. This made it easy to see anything that those changes broke, as well as update dependent projects to the latest version of a shared component automatically without any intervention. At a new workplace we are using cc.net with surround scm and I'm trying to find something similar in surround. I haven't found anything like externals, only "shared files", but unlike externals, the shared files doesn't allow you to point at a specific revision of a file for the external. I'm interested in what other people are doing in these scenarios to lean on their continuous integration and treat it more for integration than a "continuous build" server. Does anyone know of a tool or something to do "externals" behavior without using svn? I suppose having an xml registry file of which projects depend on which assemblies and if they should be using the latest version but this seems like overkill.

  • Blog engines for ASP.Net (maybe MVC) web sites

    - by J. Pablo Fernández
I've built a web site on ASP.NET MVC and one little section of it should be a blog. I'm looking for a blog to integrate. In the worst case scenario it'd be a WordPress with a custom skin and RSS integration to the rest of the site. The best would be to have an ASP.NET MVC add-on, but I can live with ASP.NET WebForms. Do you have any recomendations on the engine? I've been checking out BlogEngine.Net and I'd like to have some other ideas to compare. Anything in particular you can point to regarding this integration?
