• Need some advice before starting coding my next iPhone app...

  Hi! I need some advice about how should I start coding something. So here is the context: I've just finished building a CMS that manage a SQLite database. My application will be picking this database and use its content as the application's content. So far it's pretty simple. The application will have a navigation that will browse through various workflows, and once at the end workflow, it'll show contents from the database. A consultation kind a thing, example: Liquids - Juice - Orange Juice - Informations about Orange Juice. For my SQLite transactions, so far I believe I'll be using fmdb. It looks like a great wrapper. Here's a simple schema from one of the database: Workflow: id: { type: integer(3), primary: true, autoincrement: true } workflow_id: { type: integer(1) } name: { type: string(255) } That table's rows will be my navigations. Do you believe I should use a navigation controller? If so, then how could I generate the navigation tree from it? I have a good working knowledge of Objective-C and Foundation framework, but never went too far with it so that is why I'm asking before starting in the wrong direction :) Thanks a lot.

• Syntax errors on Heroku, but not on local server (postgresql related?)

  I'm trying to deploy my first app on Heroku (rails 3). It works fine on my local server, but when I pushed it to Heroku and ran it, it crashes, giving a number of syntax errors. These are related to a collection of scopes I use like the one below: scope :scored, lambda { |score = nil| score.nil? ? {} : where('products.votes_count >= ?', score) } it produces errors of this form: "syntax error, unexpected '=', expecting '|' " "syntax error, unexpected '}', expecting kEND" Why is this syntax making Heroku choke and how can I correct it? Thanks! EDIT: I was using sqlite on my local machine and Heroku does not support that. Trying to make sure the db is properly configured for PG. I believe I have done that by specifying in the gemfile that sqlite only be used in development. Yet I still get these syntax errors, that interrupt even the db:migrate. EDIT: So now it seems more likely that my scope syntax doesn't work in postgreSQL. Does anyone know how to convert this properly?

• Weird Rails database errors

  I've had some trouble getting my Rails app to connect to PostgreSQL so I decided to just say screw it and use SQLite for now. (I'm using the tutorial here: http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html) I started a BRAND NEW, fresh Rails app from this tutorial. When I visit my app in the browser after deleting public/index.html, I get this the first time: Please install the pg adapter: `gem install activerecord-pg-adapter` (no such file to load -- active_record/connection_adapters/pg_adapter) That's odd to me because I'm not mentioning PostgreSQL anywhere. Here's my databases.yml: # SQLite version 3.x # gem install sqlite3-ruby (not necessary on OS X Leopard) development: adapter: sqlite3 database: db/development.sqlite3 pool: 5 timeout: 5000 # Warning: The database defined as "test" will be erased and # re-generated from your development database when you run "rake". # Do not set this db to the same as development or production. test: adapter: sqlite3 database: db/test.sqlite3 pool: 5 timeout: 5000 production: adapter: sqlite3 database: db/production.sqlite3 pool: 5 timeout: 5000 To make things more confusing, I only get that "pg adapter" error on the first load. For every subsequent page request, I get this error: ActiveRecord::ConnectionNotEstablished So even though I removed all mention of PostgreSQL, I'm still getting errors. What could be going on?

• jQuery Mobile: How to run a callback-function before $.mobile.changePage?

  I'm setting up a mobile app with jQuery Mobile and PhoneGap. What I want to do is that when I click link with id "news_link" I want jQuery to fetch data from database and put it to jQm's collapsible set. In my solution, I've wanted to use $.mobile.changePage inside callback functions because I want to wait until the data has been fetched and put inside the container before the code changes page. What other workarounds there is for fetching the data from SQLite, waiting for data to be fetched, putting the data to container and then changing the pages?

• Slow loading of UITableView. How know why?

  I have a UITableView that show a long list of data. Use sections and follow the sugestion of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/695814/how-solve-slow-scrolling-in-uitableview . The flow is load a main UITableView & push a second selecting a row from there. However, with 3000 items take 11 seconds to show. I suspect first from the load of the records from sqlite (I preload the first 200). So I cut it to only 50. However, no matter if I preload only 1 or 500, the time is the same. The view is made from IB and all is opaque. I run out of ideas in how detect the problem. I run the Instruments tool but not know what to look. Also, when the user select a cell from the previous UITable, no visual feedback is show (ie: the cell not turn selected) for a while so he thinks he not select it and try several times. Is related to this problem. What to do? NOTE: The problem is only in the actual device: iPod Touch 2d generation Using fmdb as sqlite api Doing the caching in viewDidLoad Using NSDictionary for the caching Using a NSAutoreleasePool for the caching part.   I repeat the following idiom again and again. I read from a large file (sometimes, up to 1.2 million records!) and store the output into an SQLite databse. Currently, I am inserting into the database every time after loop2 finishes so that I don't have to deal with running out RAM. What could I do to speed up "loop 2"?

• Automapper: Map an Enum to its [Description] attribute

  I have a source object that looks like this: private class SourceObject { public Enum1 EnumProp1 { get; set; } public Enum2 EnumProp2 { get; set; } } The enums are decorated with a custom [Description] attribute that provides a string representation, and I have an extension method .GetDescription() that returns it. How do I map these enum properties using that extension? I'm trying to map to an object like this: private class DestinationObject { public string Enum1Description { get; set; } public string Enum2Description { get; set; } } I think a custom formatter is my best bet, but I can't figure out how to add the formatter and specify which field to map from at the same time.

• WPF binding ComboBox to enum (with a twist)

  Well the problem is that I have this enum, BUT I don't want the combobox to show the values of the enum. This is the enum: public enum Mode { [Description("Display active only")] Active, [Description("Display selected only")] Selected, [Description("Display active and selected")] ActiveAndSelected } So in the ComboBox instead of displaying Active, Selected or ActiveAndSelected, I want to display the DescriptionProperty for each value of the enum.   Problem: In short, I am getting the "Launching waiting for xdebug session 57%" problem. I am running Eclipse Gallileo Build id: 20100218-1602 on Windows 7 Ultimate I am running php 5.3.8 The Zend Extension Build and PHP Extension Build are both - API220090626,TS,VC9 Solutions Tried: I have verified that port 9000 is available for use, I have even tried other ports as a double check that ports was not the issue. That includes setting the ports in both the php.ini file and in the Eclipse development environment. I have set the php.ini file as follows (I have also tried numerous other configurations - none worked): zend_extension = "c:/wamp/bin/php/php_xdebug-2.1.3-5.3-vc9.dll" [xdebug] xdebug.remote_enable=on xdebug.remote_host="localhost" xdebug.remote_port=9000 xdebug.remote_handler="dbgp" I am at a loss, can anyone help?

• WPF ShowDialog returns immediately

  Sometimes when I call ShowDialog on an OpenFileDialog Window in WPF, the dialog closes immediately with a return value of false. I'm calling ShowDialog in response to a button click event. • Installing PHP extensions in Debian

  I'm trying to install the PECL extension pecl_http so that I can use PHP's http_negotiate_language() function. I'm running PHP5 on Apache2 and Debian Lenny. I installed the php_http package from the debian repo, however, I still can't use that function in my php scripts! The package also doesn't show up under phpinfo(). I tried installing it from PECL, but I could not. Is there some procedure for enabling these extensions in PHP? Kind of like a2enmod for apache? Note: This is a repost from http://forum.slicehost.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=4650 I also tried adding extension=pecl_http.so to my apache2/php.ini with no effect. Any guesses?

• OpenGL Colorspace Conversion

  Does anyone know how to create a texture with a YUV colorspace so that we can get hardware based YUV to RGB colorspace conversion without having to use a fragment shader? I'm using an NVidia 9400 and I don't see an obvious GL extension that seems to do the trick. I've found examples how to use a fragment shader, but the project I'm working on currently only supports OpenGL 1.1 and I don't have time to convert it to 2.0 and perform all the regression testing necessary. This is also targeting Linux. On other platforms I've been using a MESA extension but it doesn't function on the Nvidia card.

  I seem to be having an issue with Jax-WS and Jax-b playing nicely together. I need to consume a web-service, which has a predefined WSDL. When executing the generated client I am receiving the following error: javax.xml.ws.WebServiceException: javax.xml.bind.MarshalException - with linked exception: [com.sun.istack.SAXException2: unable to marshal type "java.lang.String" as an element because it is missing an @XmlRootElement annotation] This started occurring when I used an external custom binding file to map needlessly complex types to java.lang.string. I was unable to successfully map between the objects without the custom binding. Finally, one other thing I tried was setting a globalBinding definition: <globalBindings generateValueClass="false"></globalBindings> This caused the server to through an argument mismatch exception since the Soap Message was using xs:string xml types instead of passing the defined complex types, so I abandoned that idea. Any insight into what is causing the MarshalException or how to go about solving the issue of calling the webservice and mapping these objects more easily, is greatly appreciated. I've been searching for days and I sadly think I am stumped.

  This question relates to the OpenGL ES 2.0 Extension EXT_discard_framebuffer. It is unclear to me which cases justify the use of this extension. If I call glDiscardFramebufferEXT() and it puts the specified attachable images in an undefined state this means that either: - I don't care about the content anymore since it has been used with glReadPixels() already, - I don't care about the content anymore since it has been used with glCopyTexSubImage() already, - I shouldn't have made the render in the first place. Clearly, only the 1st two cases make sense or are there other cases in which glDiscardFramebufferEXT() is useful? If yes, which are these cases?

  I find myself using the current pattern quite often in my code nowadays var dictionary = new Dictionary<type, IList<othertype>>(); // Add stuff to dictionary var somethingElse = dictionary.ContainsKey(key) ? dictionary[key] : new List<othertype>(); // Do work with the somethingelse variable Or sometimes var dictionary = new Dictionary<type, IList<othertype>>(); // Add stuff to dictionary IList<othertype> somethingElse; if(!dictionary.TryGetValue(key, out somethingElse) { somethingElse = new List<othertype>(); } Both of these ways feel quite roundabout. What I really would like is something like dictionary.GetValueOrDefault(key) Now, I could write an extension method for the dictionary class that does this for me, but I figured that I might be missing something that already exists. SO, is there a way to do this in a way that is more "easy on the eyes" without writing an extension method to dictionary?

Let's say 150x150px is the smallest image users can upload. How can I set this limitation in the Uploadify plugin? • How to run a powershell script within a DOS batch file

  How do I have a powershell script embedded within the same file as a DOS batch script? I know this kind of thing is possible in other scenarios: Embedding SQL in a DOS batch script using sqlcmd and a clever arrangements of goto's and comments at the beginning of the file In a *nix environment having a the name of the program you wish to run the script with on the first line of the script commented out e.g. #!/usr/local/bin/python There may not be a way to do this - in which case I will have to call the separate powershell script from the launching DOS script. One possible solution I've considered is to echo out the powershell script, and then run it. A good reason to not do this is that part of the reason to attempt this is to be using the advantages of the powershell environment without the pain of, for example, DOS escape characters I have some unusual constraints and would like to find an elegant solution. I suspect this question may be baiting responses of the variety: "why don't you try and solve this different problem instead." Suffice to say these are my constraints, sorry about that. Any ideas? Is there a suitable combination of clever comments and escape characters that will enable me to achieve this? Some thoughts on how to achieve this: A carat ^ at the end of a line in DOS is a continuation - like an underscore in VB An ampersand & in DOS typically is used to separate commands echo Hello & echo World results in 2 echos on separate lines %0 will give you the script that's currently running So something like this (if I could make it work) would be good: # & call powershell -psconsolefile %0 # & goto :EOF /* From here on in we're running nice juicy powershell code */ Write-Output "Hello World" Except... It doesn't work... because the extension of the file isn't as per powershell's liking: Windows PowerShell console file "insideout.bat" extension is not psc1. Windows PowerShell console file extension must be psc1. DOS isn't really altogether happy with the situation either - although it does stumble on '#' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

• Eclipse c++ with mingw comiler cant build boost regex example, can find .a library files

  Hi, I'm trying to build the boost regex example in eclipse using mingw on vista. I built boost ok with mingw as there are library files XXXX.a. I could build/compile the first boost example that doesnt require any of the compiled boost libraries. When I compile the regex example I get a linker error saying it cant find the library file. I have tried various libray file names eg leave off the .a extension, leave off the lib prefix etc. Now the interesting thing is that if I leave off the library extension and rename the library file to XXX.lib it works and runs ok. So why cant it read the .a library file? It must be my setup somewhere but I dont know where or what to set. From what I read everyone is ok linking the .a file except me :( Thanks in advance, Kim
