• Linux policy routing - packets not coming back

  i am trying to set up policy routing on my home server. My network looks like this: Host routed VPN gateway Internet link through VPN 192.168.0.35/24 ---> 192.168.0.5/24 ---> 192.168.0.1 DSL router 10.200.2.235/22 .... .... 10.200.0.1 VPN server The traffic from 192.168.0.32/27 should be and is routed through VPN. I wanted to define some routing policies to route some traffic from 192.168.0.5 through VPN as well - for start - from user with uid 2000. Policy routing is done using iptables mark target and ip rule fwmark. The problem: When connecting using user 2000 from 192.168.0.5 tcpdump shows outgoing packets, but nothing comes back. Traffic from 192.168.0.35 works fine (here I am not using fwmark but src policy).   I am developing a website using .NET 3.5 that allow users to visit the site and create logins using the standard Microsoft login controls. However, users do not need to login to do general things like view products. Now I need to setup the site so some of our Traveling Sales people are able to access it but not allow anyone else to access it. The easiest way I know how to do this is to turn on Windows Authentication for the Site in IIS7. When I do that I get all sorts of errors due to also having Forms Authentication turned on. If I turn Forms Auth then I get a different kind of error. Does anyone know how to make Forms Auth and Windows Auth play nice on a single site in IIS7 or some other way to create a required login without having me kill Forms Auth?

  Hi there, I am using Amazon S3 to back up my Rails app's mysql database. And I am using astrails-safe plugin to do that and I got the "Your previous request to create the named bucket succeeded and you already own it. (AWS::S3::BucketAlreadyOwnedByYou)" error back whenever I try to update it. I have checked that the folder in which I am going to back up is there in my account already. It's just that I can't upload the files from the code (using astrails-safe). Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

  I've been using Kubuntu and Windows 7 on my laptop for some time. Recently I also started using git to keep track of a project I'm working on. At first I thought I'd use the same git repo for editing from both Kubuntu and Win, but I soon discovered that committing changes on Win would make git on Kubuntu think all the files have changed since the last commit, although the change doesn't seem to be content related. The exactly same thing happens if I do a commit on Kubuntu and right after that do a git status on Win. I know I could use different repos for Kubuntu and Win and just merge them together when I'm done, but if anyone knows how I could use the same repo I would really appreciate the help.

• TicTacToe AI Making Incorrect Decisions

  A little background: as a way to learn multinode trees in C++, I decided to generate all possible TicTacToe boards and store them in a tree such that the branch beginning at a node are all boards that can follow from that node, and the children of a node are boards that follow in one move. After that, I thought it would be fun to write an AI to play TicTacToe using that tree as a decision tree. TTT is a solvable problem where a perfect player will never lose, so it seemed an easy AI to code for my first time trying an AI. Now when I first implemented the AI, I went back and added two fields to each node upon generation: the # of times X will win & the # of times O will win in all children below that node. I figured the best solution was to simply have my AI on each move choose and go down the subtree where it wins the most times. Then I discovered that while it plays perfect most of the time, I found ways where I could beat it. It wasn't a problem with my code, simply a problem with the way I had the AI choose it's path. Then I decided to have it choose the tree with either the maximum wins for the computer or the maximum losses for the human, whichever was more. This made it perform BETTER, but still not perfect. I could still beat it. So I have two ideas and I'm hoping for input on which is better: 1) Instead of maximizing the wins or losses, instead I could assign values of 1 for a win, 0 for a draw, and -1 for a loss. Then choosing the tree with the highest value will be the best move because that next node can't be a move that results in a loss. It's an easy change in the board generation, but it retains the same search space and memory usage. Or... 2) During board generation, if there is a board such that either X or O will win in their next move, only the child that prevents that win will be generated. No other child nodes will be considered, and then generation will proceed as normal after that. It shrinks the size of the tree, but then I have to implement an algorithm to determine if there is a one move win and I think that can only be done in linear time (making board generation a lot slower I think?) Which is better, or is there an even better solution?

• TinyMce imagemanager won't generate image path when used with an iframe

  I have successfully setup tinymce to work on a page within an iframe. Everything works perfectly. However, when you use imagemanager to pick an image to be inserted or replaced in the editor it will not copy the path(and filename) of the image to the "Image URL" input in the "Insert/edit image" box. The box will either remain empty or keep the address of the previous image. • JBoss, exploded jar vs compact jar.

  Hi, I am working on Java 1.6, JBoss 5.1, EJB 3, and Hibernate 2. Every time I deploy the ear, if the jar is a compact one (non-exploded), application doesn't work. However when I explode the jar and then add it to the ear, the app works fine. Tried restarting Jboss, doesn't help. The ear refers to numerous external jars; would the order of loading the jars be an issue? How can I make JBoss load external jars followed by the app jars? Thx. WM.

• ASP.NET in Moscow!

  I’m traveling to Russia and speaking in Moscow next week at the DevConf. This will be the first time that I have visited Russia, and I know that there is a strong ASP.NET community in Russia, so I am very excited about the trip. I’m speaking at the DevConf (http://www.devconf.ru/). I don’t speak Russian, so the only words that I recognize off the home page of the conference website are ASP.NET and JavaScript (PHP, Perl, Python, and Ruby must be Russian words). • Corrupted Views when migrating document libraries from SharePoint 2003 to 2007

  A coworker of mine ran into this error recently, while migrating a document library from SharePoint 2003 to 2007: “A WebPartZone can only exist on a page which contains a SPWebPartManager. The SPWebPartManager must be placed before any WebPartZones on the page.” He saw this when he tried to see the All Documents view for the library. After looking into it, we figured out what had happened.  He was migrating documents using the Explorer View in SharePoint.  He had copied the contents of the library from one server (a remote server that we didn’t have administrative access to) to his desktop.  He then opened an Explorer View of the new library and copied the files to it.  Well, it turns out he had copied the hidden “Forms” folder, which contained the files necessary to display the different views for the library. (He had set his explorer to show hidden files, which made them visible.) So, he had copied the 2003 forms to the 2007 library, which are incompatible. We fixed it, by simply deleting the new document library, recreating it, and then copied everything except that hidden Forms folder.  Another option might have been to create a new document library on 2007, and copy the Forms folder from it to the broken library.  Since we didn’t need to save anything in the broken BTW, I confirmed my suspicion with this blog post: http://palmettotq.com/blog/?p=54

• How should I take being told that I was wrong?

  On a fairly important project with short timelines I decided to use SubSonic for straight forward data access. I wired up a handful of forms, created matching database tables and POCO's for each and used SubSonic's simple repository mode for the data access. Everything worked well and I was able to bang these forms out pretty quickly and I moved on to other things. Since that time I have heard that using SubSonic was a 'cowboy move' and that it was implemented 'incorrectly' and that 'the person who used it, didn't even know how to use SubSonic'. What I would like to know is, how should I take this? There were and still are no standards for data access at this company, so there is no violation of a standard. The forms worked exactly as requested and saved the data to the database correctly. And with only spending a few days on the forms instead of weeks, saved a lot of time which was used for other functionality in the project. So in light of all of this, I am confused as to what was 'incorrect'. Am I missing something here? Thanks for your answers.

• Weird 302 Redirects in Windows Azure

  In IdentityServer I don’t use Forms Authentication but the session facility from WIF. That also means that I implemented my own redirect logic to a login page when needed. To achieve that I turned off the built-in authentication (authenticationMode="none") and added an Application_EndRequest handler that checks for 401s and does the redirect to my sign in route. The redirect only happens for web pages and not for web services. This all works fine in local IIS – but in the Azure Compute Emulator and Windows Azure many of my tests are failing and I suddenly see 302 status codes where I expected 401s (the web service calls). After some debugging kung-fu and enabling FREB I found out, that there is still the Forms Authentication module in effect turning 401s into 302s. My EndRequest handler never sees a 401 (despite turning forms auth off in config)! Not sure what’s going on (I suspect some inherited configuration that gets in my way here). Even if it shouldn’t be necessary, an explicit removal of the forms auth module from the module list fixed it, and I now have the same behavior in local IIS and Windows Azure. strange. <modules>   <remove name="FormsAuthentication" /> </modules> HTH Update: Brock ran into the same issue, and found the real reason.
