    How would you go about knowing that ajax requests are related? Normally with HTTP-HTML requests, cookies would store a md5 hash representing a session id. Is there a similar pattern with AJAX?

    Over the years, I've tried to avoid instanceof whenever possible. Using polymorphism or the visitor pattern where applicable. I suppose it simply eases maintenance in some situations... Are there any other drawbacks that one should be aware of? I do however see it here and there in the Java libraries so I suppose it has its place? Under what circumstances is it preferable? Is it ever unavoidable?

  • Writing a Servlet that checks to see if JSP's exist and forwards to another JSP if they aren't

    I've beeb tasked with writing a servlet that intercepts a call to and JSP in a specific directoy, check that the file exists and if it does just forwarding to that file, if if doesn't I'm to forward to a default JSP. I've setup the web.xml as follows: <servlet> <description>This is the description of my J2EE component</description> <display-name>This is the display name of my J2EE component</display-name> <servlet-name>CustomJSPListener</servlet-name> <servlet-class> ... Is there a better way to do this? I'm lead to believe that I could use filters to do this, but I don't know very much about them.

  • Is it normal for a programmer with 2 years experience to take a long time to code simple programs?

    Hi all, I'm a relatively new programmer (18 months on the scene), and I'm finally getting to the point where I'm comfortable accepting projects and developing solutions under minimal supervision. Unfortunately, this also means that I've become acutely aware of my performance shortfalls, the most prevalent of which is the amount of time it takes me to develop, test, and submit algorithms for review. A great example of what I'm talking about occurred this week when I was tasked with developing a simple XML web service (asp.net 3.5) callable via client-side JavaScript, that accepts a single parameter and returns a dataset output to a modal window (please note this is the first time I've had to develop a web service and have had ZERO experience creating/consuming them...let alone calling them from JS client side). Keeping a long story short -- I worked on it for 4 days straight, all day each day, for a grand total of 36 hours, not including the time I spent dwelling on the problem in the shower, the morning commute, and laying awake in bed at night. I learned a great deal about web services and xml/json/javascript...but was called in for a management review to discuss the length of time it took me to develop the solution. In the meeting, I was praised for the quality of my work and was in fact told that my effort was commendable. However, they (senior leads and pm's) weren't impressed with the amount of time it took me to develop the solution and expressed that they would have liked to see the solution in roughly 1/3 of the time it took me. I guess what concerns me the most is that I've identified this pattern as common for myself. Between online videos, book research, and trial/error coding...if its something I haven't seen before, I can spend up to two weeks on a problem that seems to only take the pros in the videos moments to code up. And of course, knowing that management isn't happy with this pattern has shaken me up a bit. To sum up, I have some very specific questions I'd like to ask, and would greatly appreciate your objective professional feedback. Is my experience as a junior programmer common among new developers? Or is it possible that I'm just not cut out for the work? If you suspect that my experience is not common and that there may be an aptitude issue, do you have any suggestions/solutions that I could propose to management to help bring me up to speed? Do seasoned, professional programmers ever encounter knowledge barriers that considerably delay deliverables? When you started out in the industry, did you know how to "do it all"? If not, how long did it take you to be perceived as "proficient"? Was it a natural progression of trial and error, or was there a particular zen moment when you knew you had achieved super saiyen power level? Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read my question(s). I don't know if this is the right place to ask for professional career guidance, but I greatly appreciate your willingness to help me out.     I've inherited code where BeginInvoke is called from the main thread (not a background thread, which is usually the pattern). I am trying to understand what it actually does in this scenario. Does the method being called in the BeginInvoke get in line of messages that come down to the window? The docs say asynchronously, so that is my assumption. How does the framework prioritize when to kick off the method called by BeginInvoke?

My goal is to keep the project object oriented, and get 'non Flash obstacles' off my plate. XML values going to AS3, updating a changing acceleration formula. I don't hate math, but it just doesn't seem OOP or good project planning to have the math stuck in Flash. Your comments are welcome.

    Good day, I am using CacheFilter to filter a certain path to my server (which outputs an image stream to the response stream). And I've configured it in my web.xml as follows: <filter> <filter-name>imagesCache</filter-name> <filter-class>com.samaxes.cachefilter.presentation.CacheFilter</filter-class> <init-param> <param-name>privacy</param-name> <param-value>public</param-value> </init-param> <init-param> <param-name>expirationTime</param-name> <param-value>2592000</param-value> </init-param> </filter> ... <filter-mapping> <filter-name>imagesCache</filter-name> <url-pattern>/my/path/*</url-pattern> </filter-mapping> Using my firefox, if I access my url via the address bar, it hits the server the first time but uses the cache during succeeding calls. However, if the url is inside my page ( i.e. <img src="..."/> ), it seems to hit the server all the time. [EDIT] After a few more testing, accessing my image via the address bar does not work all the time. But caching does seem to work more often with it than . As to whether it really, I am not sure. Additional Info: my path is something like /my/path?then=some&query=strings. Notice that it doesn't have an extension (i.e. gif, png, jpeg ) but it's mimetype is set properly ( image/gif, image/png, image/jpeg ). I am not sure if the lack of extension or the presence of the query strings have any impact. (Also, another note. though my url have query strings, I am using the same uri + query string over and over again with my tests). Any ideas why? Thanks

    I'm working on a regex to match valid integer numbers such as the following: 0 1 99 999 However it should not allow matching an empty string. The closest I can get is: (0)|\\d{1,3} Which to me says a matching string will have either a zero or a series of digits between 1 and 3 characters long. However, empty strings still appear to match this pattern. What's the proper way to exclude empty strings from this regex?

    I am trying to match a string to a regex pattern, but have some problems. My string could have 3 forms: [dbo].[Start] dbo.Start Start This is my regex: "^((\[)?dbo(\])?)?(\.)?(\[)?Start(\])?$" All 3 forms returns success but there are some more options such as: [dboStart or dbo[Start I know that this is because it is optional, but how could I make dependencies when making optional, so that if one optional has value then the second optional must have a value too.     I have set up a SQL link server between an SQLserver 2005 on a W2003 R2 and a SYBASE 12.5.0.2 server on a IBM AIX H70 system. I use the Sybase ODBC driver 04.20.00.67 The problem is than most of the times (there is no pattern ) when I select rows from a Sybase table I get ONLY ONE ROW without any error. Please note that there is no problem when I insert rows from SQL server to the SYBASE server I appreciate any possible solutions...

I want to ask the regex engine stop finding immediately after it finds the first match of "e" for example.
