• c# counting identical strings from text file

  I have a foreach statement where I go through several lines from a text file, where I have trimmed down and sorted out the lines I need. What I want to do is count up on how many times an identical string is present. How do I do this? Here is my code. • What are the disadvantages of using a StringBuilder?

  I know that StringBuilder is more efficient than a normal string when processing code which modifies the string value a lot because although strings act like value types, they are actually reference, which makes them immutable so every time we change it, we need to create a new reference in memory. My question is that, why doesn't .NET just use stringBuilder by default? There must be some disadvantages of it over just using String. Can anyone tell me what they are? The only thing I can think of is perhaps it is a heavier object and it takes more time to instantiate so if you aren't changing the string too much, this would override the benefits of StringBuilder

  What I need is to hash a string. It doesn't really have to be secure because its just going to be a hidden pharse in the text file (simply it doesn't have to be recognizable for a human-eye). It should not be just a random string because when user will be typing the string I would like to hash it and compare it with already hashed one (in the text file). What would be the best for this purpose? Can it be done with the own class?

Besides doing string1.toLowerCase.startsWith(string2.toLowerCase()); is there an efficient way to see if string1 starts with string2 in a case-insensitive way?

• rb_str_modify() equivalent in the Ruby language

  I was trying to add a method to the String class. This method should mutate the current string (of course it would be possible to write a not mutating version but I'd prefer the mutating one). I had no idea how to do this and after some googling I found the method rb_str_modify which makes a given string mutable. That's exactly what I need but I couldn't find an equivalent in the Ruby language. Did I miss something or is there really no possibility in the language itself?

• Removing words from a file

  I'm trying to take a regular text file and remove words identified in a separate file (stopwords) containing the words to be removed separated by carriage returns ("\n"). Right now I'm converting both files into lists so that the elements of each list can be compared. I got this function to work, but it doesn't remove all of the words I have specified in the stopwords file. • How to create a datastore.Text object out of an array of dynamically created Strings?

  I am creating a Google App Engine server for a project where I receive a large quantity of data via an HTTP POST request. The data is separated into lines, with 200 characters per line. The number of lines can go into the hundreds, so 10's of thousands of characters total. What I want to do is concatenate all of those lines into a single Text object, since Strings have a maximum length of 500 characters but the Text object can be as large as 1MB. Here is what I thought of so far: public void doPost(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp) { ... String[] audioSampleData = new String[numberOfLines]; for (int i = 0; i < numberOfLines; i++) { audioSampleData[i] = req.getReader().readLine(); } com.google.appengine.api.datastore.Text textAudioSampleData = new Text(audioSampleData[0] + audioSampleData[1] + ...); ... } But as you can see, I don't know how to do this without knowing the number of lines before-hand. Is there a way for me to iterate through the String indexes within the Text constructor? I can't seem to find anything on that. Of note is that the Text object can't be modified after being created, and it must have a String as parameter for the constructor. (Documentation here) Is there any way to this? If the user does not have .Net 4.0 Full install and attempts to install our app the framework installs fine but the app fails to install. If we re-run the installation again the app installs fine.   I'm writing a utility that takes in a .resx file and creates a javascript object containing properties for all the name/value pairs in the .resx file. This is all well and good, until one of the values in the .resx is This dealer accepts electronic orders. /r/nClick to order {0} from this dealer. I'm adding the name/value pairs to the js object like this: streamWriter.Write(string.Format("\n{0} : \"{1}\"", kvp.Key, kvp.Value)); When kvp.Value = "This dealer accepts electronic orders./r/nClick to order {0} from this dealer." This causes StreamWriter.Write() to actually place a newline in between 'orders.' and 'Click', which naturally screws up my javascript output. I've tried different things with @ and without using string.Format, but I've had no luck. Any suggestions? Edit: This application is run during build to get some javascript files deployed later, so at no point is it accessible to / run by anyone but the app developers. So while I obviously need a way to escape characters here, XSS as such is not really a concern.

• How would I force Debian to use the physical sector size on a hard disk?

  I just purchased a few new 3TB WD drives. These have physical 4k sectors, but there is some sort of layer which is providing 512B logical sectors (see the partition table below). In order to attempt to get some more speed out of my hard drives, I would like to get rid of this logical layer and actually use the physical 4k sectors. However, I can't figure out how to do this (or even if it's possible) from the man pages of fdisk and parted, or from searching Google. Does anybody know how this could be done? As to why this is relevant, this page demonstrates that meerly aligning the sectors properly can already make up to a 25% speed difference for reads, and more than 2500% for writes in some cases! • Fix Linux-made png file for use on Windows

  There is a particular icon library that I really like. Now, I have downloaded the package that has the png files inside (I know the ico files are there, but I want the png files). However, about my Windows 7 computer tells me that about 1/3 of the png files are corrupt. I usually use XnView to view the files, and it won't display the "corrupt" files. I've tried other editors and viewers and I get the same issue. Now, the png package was originally designed for Linux to be an OS-icon-package for the entire system, so I figure the png files were built in Linux. So, is there a way I can "fix" the "corrupted" png files for my Windows 7 computer? Maybe when the files were created there was some bit that was off-colour or something? Any clues? [edit] I have read in this thread that the "corruption" could happen during the extraction process. I did all the extraction with 7-zip. It was a zip containing a tar. I will try another extractor, but I don't think it will make any difference.

  Hi there I just did a huge mistake. Yesterday, a freind of mine has asked me to intal windows xp for him. I did this task hundres of times, but yesterday i was tyred when i started the install procedure and i've formated the D partition and installed windows on it. Now I'm running PhotoRed on that partition, but it recovers the files in a weird way(filenames and diretory structure is lost). My questions are: 1) how can i recouver as much is possible from the previous data of that partition? 2) how to tell to my freind what i've did?

• Best filesystem for an external drive? ExFAT?

  What is the best filesystem for use with multiple OS's? I saw this question but its old and doesn't take into account ExFAT. Here is what I know from my findings: NTFS - Can't write from Mac FAT32 - Doesn't support files larger than 4GB HFS - Only mac ExFAT - ??? I don't know much about this but it seems like it got rid of the 4GB limit of FAT32 and can be read on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Is ExFAT the best bet? I tried formatting the drive in ExFAT just now, but on Windows XP SP3 it was showing up as not formatted... It seems to me like FAT32 is still the best, but I wanted to see what other people had to say.

  I have a table that is longer than one page. I have found the option to make the header of the table to be added to the second portion of the table after the page break. Is there a way to do the same thing but with a footer on the table? I want to add a footer so that if my table was 1000 entries long (12 pages), that the first and last row of each page would be consistant; a header and footer for the table. If I edit the rest of the document (above the table) the table will shift up/down and I want to header and footer of the table to remain at the pagge breaks. Any Ideas?
