• Converting John Resig's JavaScript Templating Engine to work with PHP Templates

  I'm trying to convert the John Resig's Templating Engine to work with PHP. Essentially what I would like to achieve is the ability to use certain Kohana Views via a JavaScript templating engine, that way I can use the same views for both a standard PHP request and a jQuery AJAX request. • Multiple Configuration Sources for Enterprise Library 4.1?

  Hi All, We use the caching and logging application blocks from entlib 4.1. We want to keep the configuration of those two in seperate files. How can we achieve this? It looks like entlib is always using the selectedSource as it configuration. • Big-O of PHP functions?

  After using PHP for a while now, I've noticed that not all PHP built in functions as fast as expected. Consider the below two possible implementations of a function that finds if a number is prime using a cached array of primes. //very slow for large $prime_array $prime_array = array( 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, .... 104729, ... ); $result_array = array(); foreach( $array_of_number => $number ) { $result_array[$number] = in_array( $number, $large_prime_array ); } //still decent performance for large $prime_array $prime_array => array( 2 => NULL, 3 => NULL, 5 => NULL, 7 => NULL, 11 => NULL, 13 => NULL, .... 104729 => NULL, ... ); foreach( $array_of_number => $number ) { $result_array[$number] = array_key_exists( $number, $large_prime_array ); } This is because in_array is implemented with a linear search O(n) which will linearly slow down as $prime_array grows. Where the array_key_exists function is implemented with a hash lookup O(1) which will not slow down unless the hash table gets extremely populated (in which case it's only O(logn)). So far I've had to discover the big-O's via trial and error, and occasionally looking at the source code. Now for the question... I was wondering if there was a list of the theoretical (or practical) big O times for all* the PHP built in functions. *or at least the interesting ones For example find it very hard to predict what the big O of functions listed because the possible implementation depends on unknown core data structures of PHP: array_merge, array_merge_recursive, array_reverse, array_intersect, array_combine, str_replace (with array inputs), etc.

• PHP sessions causing Apache to hang indefinitely

  The problem is that every so often a page that writes to a Session will cause apache to hang forever for a particular session. Once this error occurs for one user any further modifications to any session of any user will cause the website to hang for this user. This problem has been my sole focus for days. I have a development VPS running Windows 2003 and default latest version of XAMPP using the standard PHP session handler. The code in question actually runs on two other machines perfectly normally so although my common sense says it’s a web server configuration issue but at this point I am willing to try anything. On further investigation there are no errors in the Apache, PHP or System event log. Resources are abundant and there is no “AJAX shit storm” or more than a couple writes to a session per page. I have also implemented session_write_close() wherever possible to try and help elevate the problem. I have checked the session’s directory which is set to “C:\windows\Temp” and found that once a user enters this hanging phase that the corresponding session file is exclusively locked and the only way to resolve this is to stop Apache and wait a few moments for the files to become unlocked and delete them. I am not wondering if deletion is required. The Sessions themselves only contain 4 bits of information. ShoppingCartID, UserID, UserLevel and Refering URL and are alphanumerical with an occasional slash. My PHP.INI’s session section is configured like this: session.save_handler = files session.save_path = "C:\WINDOWS\Temp" session.use_cookies = 1 session.name = PHPSESSID session.auto_start = 0 session.cookie_lifetime = 0 session.cookie_path = / session.cookie_domain = session.cookie_httponly = session.serialize_handler = php session.gc_probability = 1 session.gc_divisor = 100 session.gc_maxlifetime = 1440 session.bug_compat_42 = 1 session.bug_compat_warn = 1 session.referer_check = session.entropy_length = 0 session.entropy_file = session.cache_limiter = nocache session.cache_expire = 180 session.use_trans_sid = 0 session.hash_function = 0 session.hash_bits_per_character = 4 I have tried everything I can think of and the whole problem is now a blur to me. • PHP - Database schema: version control, branching, migrations.

  I'm trying to come up with (or find) a reusable system for database schema versioning in php projects. There are a number of Rails-style migration projects available for php. http://code.google.com/p/mysql-php-migrations/ is a good example. It uses timestamps for migration files, which helps with conflicts between branches. General problem with this kind of system: When development branch A is checked out, and you want to check out branch B instead, B may have new migration files. This is fine, migrating to newer content is straight forward. If branch A has newer migration files, you would need to migrate downwards to the nearest shared patch. If branch A and B have significantly different code bases, you may have to migrate down even further. This may mean: Check out B, determine shared patch number, check out A, migrate downwards to this patch. This must be done from A since the actual applied patches are not available in B. Then, checkout branch B, and migrate to newest B patch. Reverse process again when going from B to A. Proposed system: When migrating upwards, instead of just storing the patch version, serialize the whole patch in database for later use, though I'd probably only need the down() method. When changing branches, compare patches that have been run to patches that are available in the destination branch. Determine nearest shared patch (or oldest difference, maybe) between db table of run patches and patches in destination branch by ID or hash. Could also look for new or missing patches that are buried under a number of shared patches between the two branches. Automatically merge down to the nearest shared patch, using the db table stored down() methods, and then merge up to the branche's latest patch. My question is: Is this system too crazy and/or fraught with consequences to bother developing? My experience with database schema versioning is limited to PHP autopatch, which is an up()-only system requiring filenames with sequential IDs.

• Log to rolling CSV file with Enterprise Library

  Need logging to: Rolling file, to avoid 1 big log file. CSV format for easier look up. I can see EntLib (5.0) have Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.TraceListeners.RollingFlatFileTraceListener to log to rolling log file. To make the log entries look like a CSV row, I can change the Logging.Formatters.TextFormatter.Template to put double quote around the values. Also change the Listener's Footer and Header to nothing, so they won't be output. Under normal circumstance, this would give me a well formed CSV file. However if a token value in the Template contain double quote, this would not be escaped, hence the log file become an invalid CSV file. Is there any way to resolve this? Is there any alternative solutions to this problem?

  I'm working on a tool which converts PHP code to Scala. As one of the finishing touches, I'm in need of a really good (er, somewhat biased) benchmark. By dumb luck my first benchmark attempt was with some code which uses bcmath extensively, which unfortunately is 1000x slower in Java, making the Scala code 22x slower overall than the original PHP. So I'm looking for some meaningful PHP benchmark with the following characteristics: The source needs to be in a single file. I need it to be simple to setup - no databases, hard-to-find input files, etc. Simple text input and output preferred. It should not use features that are slow in Java (BigInteger, trigonometric functions, etc). It should not use exoteric or dynamic PHP functions (e.g. no "eval" or "variable vars"). It should not over-rely on built-in libraries, e.g. MD5, crypt, etc. It should not be I/O bound. A CPU-bound memory-hungry algorithm is preferred. Basically, intensive OO operations, integer and string manipulation, recursion, etc would be great. Thanks

• Passing variables across a multi page form in php

  Forgive me as I am a newbie. I have a multi page form in which I am using $_SESSIONS to record the variables. <?php session_start(); foreach ( $_POST as $key=>$value ) { if ( $key!="submit" ) { $value= htmlentities(stripslashes(strip_tags($value))); $_SESSION[$key] = $value; } }` I have two problems actually. When I get to a checkform.php that I made that prints out the variables, The variables from page 1 doesn't show up even though that code listed above is on each page. I am using Firefox web developers tool to disable cookies and in the php ini, I altered session.use_trans_sid to 1 to turn it on. For the final page on my checkform.php I print_r($_POST) for the final page which works fine. Why doesn't variables from page 1 not show up? What am I missing? The 2nd problem is that when I print_r($_SESSION), some fields, specifically the checkbox arrays, print as [payment] => Array [agerange] => Array [meals] => Array [mealtypes] => Array What am I missing?

  I'm using Flash Builder 4 Beta 2. I have it connecting to a PHP service. The way I set this up was using the wizard, so I didn't actually write the code to connect to it. There are about 30,000 users right now. The service seems to timeout when fetching more than around 22,000 rows, I get the "Channel Disconnected before an acknowledgement was received" error. If I call the PHP script from a browser, it fetches them all with no problems at all, however. I have tried increasing the timeout in the PHP script (which didn't work), but obviously this isn't the problem since the browser is able to pull them up with no problems. Is there a way to increase the timeout of the PHP service in Flash Builder? I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to Flash, so please be descriptive. Thanks in advance!

• Using PHP to display button with hyperlink or greyed out button if no URL in database

  I've got a webpage that I'm working on where you click on a letter or category and it displays records matching that query from a database. One of the things I want to display is a hyperlinked button that says "Website" if the database record contains a URL in the 'URL' field, and if there is no value in that field, it will display a greyed out version of that button.   Hi All, My PHPEd suddenly stopped showing arguments and arg order in the hints, and now just shows a basic description of the function. Before I go digging around in the config files, has anyone else had this problem? Thanks! Edit: Sorry, I may not have been entirely clear on this. There is no problem with my own classes, only with the actual php functions. Example: How it used to work: I type a PHP function, say strpos. As soon as I type the '(' at the end of it, I get the little yellow box, showing something like this: int strpos ( string $haystack , mixed $needle [, int $offset=0 ] ) with the first argument bold. If I type it, and then a comma, it bolds the second arg, and so on. This is really nice, since PHP functions are a bit scrambled as far as argument order, and I don't have to look them up every time. How it works now: I type a php function, say strpos. As soon as I type the '(' at the end of it, I get the little yellow box. It says something like "strpos - Returns the numeric position of the first occurrence of needle in the haystack string." There are no arguments shown, which makes the little box basically worthless - I know what strpos does, I just want a reminder of the argument order. I think this may be a problem with the included PHPDoc, which I never use, but may be the source of the data for the hint box. I did recently upgrade to 5.6, but ended up removing it and restoring 5.2. I installed to a different folder, and uninstalled from there, but it may have overwritten something in the original folder? I'm using v5.2 (5220). Thanks!

• Run a PHP script every second using CLI

  Hello, I have a dedicated server running Cent OS with a Parallel PLESK panel. I need to run a php script every second, that updates my database. These is no alternative way timewise, i have checked every method, it needs to be updated every second. I can find my script using the url: http://www.mysite.com/phpfile.php?key=123, and this has to be executed every second. Does anyone have any knowledge at all on doing this, i can not seem to find the answer. I heard about doing it with CLI and putty, but i have no knowledge of this at all. Or can this be done using the PLESK Panel? And can the file be executed locally every second. Like \phpfile.php If someone helps me on answering these question i would really appreciate it.
