• Using background-attachment:fixed in safari on the ipad

  I'm looking to recreate an effect similiar to the popular science app. Basically have one big background image and then have HTML/CSS layer on top of that. When the user scrolls the content, then background-position of the image should remain in place, and not scroll. Obviously in a 'regular' browser I would use background-attachment:fixed, but this doesn't seem to work on the ipad. I know position:fixed doesn't work as you might expect according to safari spec - but is there any way of achieving this?

• How to set locale default_url_options for functional tests (Rails)

  In my application_controller, I have the following set to include the locale with all paths generated by url_for: def default_url_options(options={}) { :locale => I18n.locale } end My resource routes then have a :path_prefix = "/:locale" Works fine on the site. But when it comes to my functional tests, the :locale is not passed with the generated urls, and therefore they all fail. I can get around it by adding the locale to the url in my tests, like so: get :new, :locale => 'en' But I don't want to have to manually add the locale to every functional test. I tried adding the default_url_options def above to test_helper, but it seems to have no effect. Is there any way I can change the default_url_options to include the locale for all my tests? Thanks.

• Css background layers and 100% height div's

  Imagine the following code. <body id="first_bg_layer"> <div id="second_bg_layer"> <div id="third_bg_layer"> </div> </div> </div> Each layer has a different background that is static/repeated to achieve the desired effect. I need all layers to fill up the screen, otherwise the background will be broken. The background is split in layers to minimize the image sizes. Setting min-height to 100% doesn't work for various reasons. Is there any way to do this?

• Problem with animating the deletion of table rows in jQuery

  Hey guys, I have written some jQuery code to use the "slideUp" animation when deleting rows from a table. In order for the animation to appear smooth, I wrapped the contents of each TD in the row with DIV tags, and called the slideUp function on the DIVs, removing the actual TDs upon completion of the animation. The code for that is as follows: $("tr[id$=" + rowID + "]").children("td").each(function() { $(this).children("div").slideUp(function() { $(this).parent().remove(); }); }); So far, so good. However, I noticed that this code does not remove the actual TR, only its contents, so I added the following line to remove the TR: $("tr[id$=" + rowID + "]").remove(); The problem is that after I added the line above, the animation quit working. In other words, the row simply disappears without the nice sliding effect. Does anybody know why this is so and how to get around it? Thanks in advance for your insights! Victor

• Show underlying applications mouse cursor when hovering over visible section of my application.

  I am writing a WPF application that allows the user to draw over the entire screen when the right mouse button is held down. I use a full screen transparent overlay form to achieve this, however, as I draw lines with the mouse, what's happening is that the portion of my window that contains the line is becoming visible (as expected). The undesired effect of this is that if the line is over a part of another application such as a textbox, or hyperlink, this changes the cursor back to the default cursor my my app (arrow), instead of the other applications desired cursor (IBeam). I want my overlay to be seamless to the user, and just show their drawing path, rather than have any interaction with the mouse cursor. See my example below:

• iPhone like red badge notification in a WPF project?

  I have a C# WPF project which generates daily and weekly reports automatically. I want to inform the user when new reports are available, so I thought of a badge like on the iPhone where the number of new messages appears on a little red circle: I thought of three images: Two images with semi circles on the left and right if the number to display is small. And a third image for the middle for the case that the number is large (123) and wouldn't fit in a circle. I want a glossy effect, so I've thought of pictures. Does anyone have a good idea how to do this without pictures but programmatically?

• Using CSS Classes for individual effects - opinions?

  Hey, Just trying to canvas some opinions here. I was wondering how people go about adding individual effects to html elements. Take this example: you have three types of h1 titles all the same size but some are black some are gold and some are white. Some have a text-shadow etc. Would you create separate CSS classes and add them do the h1 tag or would you create a new single class for each different h1 title type (with grouped CSS elements)? With singular class for each effect you can build up combos of classes in html class="gold shadow" but also how would you name them. For example its bad practice to give classes and id names associated to colours, because it doesn't define what it does well. However is this ok with textual CSS classes? Just wondering what others do, I know there are no hard and fast rules. Cheers.

• Get stacktrace from stuck python process

  I have to run a legacy Zope2 website and have some grievance with it. The biggest issue is that, occasionally, it just locks up, running at 100% CPU load and not answering to requests anymore. While the problem isn't reproducible on a regular basis, one page containing 3 dynamic graphs triggers it sometimes, so I suspect some kind of race condition that leads to an endless loop or a stuck busywait. The problem is, I have not yet found a way to debug this thing. There's nothing in the Zope logs and nothing in the system logs. I tried the suggestions from this question to get a stacktrace, but the only signal that has any effect is SIGKILL. Is there another possibility to find out where exactly the process is when it gets stuck?

  Hi all, I'm trying to use Interop to manipulate MS Project 2003 (MPP) files. My problem is that MS Project reports that the files is already opened by another user (me!) and that I can open it only as read-only. Obviously, I've tried to restart studio, then windows (xp) but with no effect. The file attribute for Readonly is cleared on the file. Any suggestions for what I might try?! • Elisp performance on Windows and Linux

  I have the following dead simple elisp functions; the first removes the fill breaks from the current paragraph, and the second loops through the current document applying the first to each paragraph in turn, in effect removing all single line-breaks from the document. It runs fast on my low-spec Puppy Linux box using emacs 22.3 (10 seconds for 600 pages of Thomas Aquinas), but when I go to a powerful Windows XP machine with emacs 21.3, it takes almost an hour to do the same document.   As per the title. Calling [[UIDevice currentDevice] BeginGeneratingDeviceOrientationNotifications] has no effect. DidRotateToInterfaceOrientation etc events are working fine, but I need to be able to poll the device orientation arbitrarily. How can I fix/do this? The long story: I have a tab application with a navigation controller on each tab. The root view of tab number one is a graph that goes full screen when the orientation changes to landscape; however this needs to be checked whenever the view appears as the orientation change could have occurred elsewhere, so I was hoping to poll the orientation state whenever this view appears.

• jQuery animate() and appendTo() problem

  Hi! I'm doing a chess game. In there, I want to move an element with effect and then append it to new div. Following is my code. //--> #p70 is just ablove #p80 //--> each square is 64px $('#p80').animate({bottom:'+=64px'},500); //--> move one square above $('#b70').append($('#p80')); //--> append the animated element to owner 'div' The problem is, it moves 2 square( equivalent to 128px) where I only did is 64px. Here is my page and if you click the white square just above the pawn, you'll see the problem. I've tried adding delay(1000) and even javascript setTimeout but nothing works :( Really appreciate your helps in advance!

• Programatically enable / disable multitouch finger input?

  I have a multitoch-enabled tablet PC running Windows 7. However, when using the stylus pen and getting too far away from the display, I often accidently hit it with my fingers which causes unwanted mouse-clicks. The solution is navigating to "Control Panel - Pen- and Finger Input - Finger Input" and deactivate the checkbox "Use the finger as an input device" (all titles translated so they might be different on an English windows). Now I am wondering whether I can do this programatically, too, so I would be able to write a little tray app for this. I tried using Process Monitor to find out registry keys, however, I did not find one which really shows the same effect as the checkbox. Does anyone know how to access this property (without using UI-Automation)? Cheers winSharp93

• Android: 2D. OpenGl or android.graphics?

  I'm working with my friend on our first Android game. Basic idea is that every frame the whole surface is redrawn (1 large bitmap) which then sprinkled all over with large number of particles which produces effect of soapy bubbles where there's a pool of about 20 bitmaps which randomly gets picked to produce illusion that all bubbles (between 200 - 300) are all different. The math engine is in C (JNI) and currently all drawing is done using android.graphics package very similar (since that was the example I was using) to Lunar Lander. It works but animation is somewhat jerky and I can feel by temperature of my phone that it is very busy. Will we benefit from switching to OpenGL? And as a bonus question: what would be a good way to optimize the drawing mechanism (Lunar Lander like) we have now?

• Sitemaps on multiple front end servers using a http handler, is that a good idea?

  Question 1 We would like to generate a site map for our CMS site We have multiple front end servers with approx a million articles. Environment multiple MS SQL servers multiple front end servers (load balanced) ASP.net - and IIS 6 Windows 2003 To have the site maps (the site map index file, and the site map files) physically on the front end servers will be a operations nightmare and error prone. So we are considering using http handlers instead so that it does not matter what server gets the request, it will be able to serve the correct xml file. Question 2 If we ping Google each time we publish a new article will that effect us negatively if that happens more than once a hour. Thanks!

After finding this article (See:Problem 2) on how changes in VC10 compiler might effect previously OK code, I am wondering if there are any more things to watch out for when mixing the STL and CComPtr or prehaps just mixing the STL and COM in general.   Hey guys, I feel like I spend a lot of time writing code in Python, but not enough time creating Pythonic code. Recently I ran into a funny little problem that I thought might have an easy, idiomatic solution. Paraphrasing the original, I needed to collect every sequential pair in a list. For example, given the list [1,2,3,4,5,6], I wanted to compute [(1,2),(3,4),(5,6)]. I came up with a quick solution at the time that looked like translated Java. Revisiting the question, the best I could do was l = [1,2,3,4,5,6] [(l[2*x],l[2*x+1]) for x in range(len(l)/2)] which has the side effect of tossing out the last number in the case that the length isn't even. Is there a more idiomatic approach that I'm missing, or is this the best I'm going to get?

• Why Do Browsers Leak Memory?

  A colleague and I were speaking about browsers (using browser control in a project), and it appears as plain as day that all browsers (Firefox, Chrome, IE, Opera) display the same characteristic or side-effect from their usage and that being 'Leaking Memory'. Can someone explain why that is the case? Surely as with any form of code, there should be proper garbage collection? PS. I've read about some defensive patterns on why this can happen from a developer's perspective. I am aware of an article Crockford wrote on IE; but why is the problem symptomatic of every browser? • How to pause a setTimeout call ?

  Im using jQuery and working on a notification system for my site. The notifications automatically fadeout using the setTimeout function. How can i stop the timer of the setTimeout call? For example i would like to pause the setTimeout call while the mouse is over the notification and continue the count down mouseout... I googled "pause setTimeout" with no luck. Im currently clearing the setTimeout call with clearTimeout and at same time fading out the notification on mouseout but it would be nice to have that pause effect. Any ideas?

• location.hash in an iframe scrolls the parent window

  Hi all. I have a page with an iframe. Inside the iframe is code (that I can't change) that sets location.hash to the id of an element in the iframe window. This has the unwanted effect of scrolling my outermost browser window so that the top of the window touches the top of the iframe. This is quite annoying as I have a toolbar above the iframe that is vital to my app. Is there any way of preventing the setting of location.hash affecting the scroll position of the main window? Will preventDefault help me out here? Thanks!
