What is the relation between control flow, data type, statement, expression, operation, function, ...? How a program is built from these primitives level by level?   I am looking into the possibility/feasibility/resources for building a cross compiler which takes a procedural or Object Oriented language like C, or Java and compiling it into SQL. I understand that the advantage of SQL code is performing set operations which is fundamentally different from procedural languages which generally process 1 at a time. If anyone has done this before, or if it is thought of as too complicated to do or any other ideas/concerns/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Philip

• Programming challenge: can you code a hello world program as a Palindrome?

  So the puzzle is to write a hello world program in your language of choice, where the program's source file as a string has to be a palindrome. To be clear, the output has to be exactly "Hello, World". Edit: Well, with comments it seems trivial (not that I thought of it myself of course [sigh].. hat tip to cobbal). So new rule: no comments. Edit: I feel kind of bad editing someone else's question to say this, but it will eliminate a lot of non-palindromes that keep popping up, and I'm tired of seeing the same simple mistake over and over. • Managing multiple .NET languages in a web application

  I am part of a development team building a new ASP.NET 3.5 web application. Two of us are C# coders, and the other is a VB.NET coder. I know that we can mix languages on a per-project basis, and one can build classes in one language that inherit from classes written in the other language in a different project (which we are already doing), but I can see us getting into a situation where we might well end up with cyclic dependencies between our various project DLLs. Other than simply having a high number of projects (more seperation of concerns into more libraries), how have you managed this situation on your own projects? Note - I believe this question to be different enough from the only similar match I could find (this one) on the basis that we are not wanting to use different languages in order to take advantage of their specific features per se, but rather to make use of what developer resource is available to us (i.e. one dev just happens to be VB.NET only).

  im sure you guys must have seen the shift happens video series. here's a link to them : http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=shift+happens&search_type=&aq=f also, the recent hungry beast video about google, which can be found here: (SO doesnt allow new users more than one hyperlink, so please search on youtube for this one) what i'd like to ask you guys is this: is there a program that enables such videos to be made quickly or is it really just the creative genius of the respective authors? i think vidoes like these are extremely useful when you want to make an impact and would find many uses for such a program in my line of work. im hoping somebody can point me in the right direction. ps. i DO know of animoto, so please dont suggest that :P the problem with animoto is that it doesnt allow text manipulation like these videos. to be fair, that is a great product in itself, but im sure if you take a look, you'll see the difference that im talking abuot.

• Zend Framework cleaning default routes when adding other

  I have the following problem with Zend Framework. My project has several controllers like Video,Category and Post. The VideoController has an Action called categorylist, so the default URL/Route becomes /video/categorylist Since the action requires 3 parameters I whant to add one simple route: $router->addRoute( 'categorylist', new Zend_Controller_Router_Route('categorylist/:category/:page/:per_page', array('controller' => 'video', 'action' => 'categorylist','page'=>1,'per_page'=>6,'category'=>1)) ); With this I got my URL like www.siteurl.com/categorylist/42/1/6 but, the View Helper URL got crazy, and every url for the other controllers I try to echo it´s redirected to the categorylist route. So when I try this: <?= $this->url(array("controller"=> "video", "action" =>"view",'category'=>1),null,true)?> The expected result its /video/view/category/1, but I got /categorylit only. I tryied to debug the default routes but I got an empty array. print_r($ctrl->getRouter()->getRoutes()); Does anyone have some clue about this wierd behavior? I´m using Zend Framework Version 1.9.7

• Dynamically bind argument and default value to existing function in Javascript

  Let's suppose you have some function someFunc() already defined in javascript, that may or may not have its own argument set defined. Is it possible to write another function to add a required argument and set that argument to a default for someFunc()? Something like: var someFunc = function(arg1, arg2 ...){ Do stuff...} var addRequired = function(argName, argValue, fn) { Add the required default arg to a function... } addRequired("x", 20, someFunc); Now someFunc would be defined roughly like so: someFunc = function(x, arg1, arg2...) { x = 20; Do stuff... } What I am really seeking is to not only bind a this value to a function (which I already know how to achieve), but also bind another object reference to that same function (the function not being known ahead of time, as a user will define it, but then the user's code has access to this second object reference for use in their own function). So in my simple example above, the "20" value will actually be an object reference. Thanks for any help you can offer.

  I'm trying to create a check constraint such as CHECK Type IN (N'Create', N'Remove') for an enumeration's value. Sqlite complains about this syntax and only accepts CHECK Type IN ('Create', 'Remove'). The main database will be Sql Server 2005, but I use sqlite's in memory database for unit tests. Is there any way to get sqlite to recognise the national language (N) prefix? Alternatively, is there an easy way when using FluentNHibernate to adapt an nvarchar constant to match the database's dialect?

• Map Reduce Frameworks/Infrastructure

  Map Reduce is a pattern that seems to get a lot of traction lately and I start to see it manifest in one of my projects that is focused on an event processing pipeline (iPhone Accelerometer and GPS data). I needed to built a lot of infrastructure for this project, in fact it overweighs the logic code interacting with it by 2x. Some of the components I built where EventProcessors (with in- and output plus buffering, timing etc.), multiplexers and aggregators. This leads me to my question what the "common" required infrastrucutre for map reduce is. Since I am working with .Net a lot I can see map reduce infrastructure built into the Framework and language constructs. Functional languages support this paradigm per se. It seems every language can be used with map reduce, some have better support than others, others again are built around that concept (e.g. Go). And there are Frameworks like Apache Hadoop to support map reduce.

• Implementing dynamic scope when using CPS as intermediate language

  I am currently studying the implementation of programming languages and became interested in using Continuation-Passing Style as the intermediate language of the compiler. I also want to implement limited dynamic scope (for exception-handling or Scheme parameter objects) but I cannot find the relevant literature. I think it can be done with a separate environment passed as a variable to every closure, but this solution seems ugly to me. Could anyone point me to the relevant literature, or give me an idea of how this can be done?

  here is my problem which in my system. my system allow user to add event, which include date, time, places. In the other hand, user are allow to choose the "Event sharing to" some of other user. So i successful to created and share to other user, when the user login which are being choose to share with the event, he is able to view for that particular event. But the problem is, when user add the event, he must choose for his own name also in the select box. If not he will be unable to read the event that he had created.   I quickly wrote an interpreter for some sort of experimental programing language i came up with, in PHP (yes, in PHP). The language itself doesn't have anything really special, I just wanted to give it a try. I got the basic things working (Hello World, input to output, string manipulation, arithmetics) but I'm getting stuck with the management of blocks and grouped statements. What I mean is: PHP and most other languages let you do this: ((2+2)*(8+2)+2), of course not only with mathematical computations. My program structure currently consists of a multidimensional array built like this: ID => Type (Identifier, String, Int, Newline, EOF, Comma, ...) Contents (If identifier, int or string) How could I allow statements to be executed in a defined order like in the PHP example above?

I have used a little bit of AppleScript, which seems to be the most English-like programming language I have ever seen, because almost operators can be words, and it lets you use "the" anywhere (for example, this stupid example I just came up with: firstnumber = 1 secondnumber = 2 if the firstnumber is equal to the secondnumber then set the sum to 5 end if is a valid AppleScript program. Are there any programming languages that are even more English-like than these?

• Are frameworks using byte-code generation creating leaky abstractions?

  My point is, if you don't understand the abstraction of a framework, you can still decompile it and understand it, because you know the language e.g. Java. However, when byte-code generation happens, you have to understand even a lower level - JVM level byte-codes. I am really affraid of using any of such frameworks, which are many. Most of the time I think the reason for byte-code generation is simply lack of language features such as metaprogramming. Do you agree? What is your opinion and argument? How do you take over the problem with leaky abstractions in those frameworks?
