• Why is the XML DTD not found by the browser

  When I load my XML file in a browser, it complains there is 'no style information': "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below." So I wrote an external DTD, then an internal DTD, but keep getting the same 'no style information' error. It doesn't even show the DTD! • Capture keystrokes (e.g., function keys) while a messagebox is up

  We have a large WinForms app, and there is a built-in bug reporting system that can be activated during testing via the F5 Key. I am capturing the F5 key with .Net's PreFilterMessage system. This works fine on the main forms, modal dialog boxes, etc. Unfortunately, the program also displays windows messageboxes when it needs to. When there is a bug with that, e.g., wrong text in the messagebox or it shouldn't be there, the messagefilter isn't executed at all when the messagebox is up! I realize I could fix it by either rewriting my own messagebox routine, or kicking off a separate thread that polls GetAsyncKeyState and calls the error reporter from there. However I was hoping for a method that was less of a hack. • Remove ActiveRecord in Rails 3 (beta)

  Now that Rails 3 beta is out, I thought I'd have a look at rewriting an app I have just started work on in Rails 3 beta, both to get a feel for it and get a bit of a head-start. The app uses MongoDB and MongoMapper for all of its models nad therefore has no need for ActiveRecord. In the previous version, I am unloading activerecord in the following way: config.frameworks -= [ :active_record ] # inside environment.rb In the latest version this does not work - it just throws an error: /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/railties-3.0.0.beta/lib/rails/configuration.rb:126:in `frameworks': config.frameworks in no longer supported. See the generated config/boot.rb for steps on how to limit the frameworks that will be loaded (RuntimeError) from *snip* Of course, I have looked at the boot.rb as it suggested, but as far as I can see, there is no clue here as to how I might go about unloading AR. The reason I need to do this is because not only is it silly to be loading something I don't want, but it is complaining about its inability to make a DB connection even when I try to run a generator for a controller. This is because I've wiped database.yml and replaced it with connection details for MongoDB in order to use this gist for using database.yml for MongoDB connection details. Not sure why it needs to be able to initiate a DB connection at all just to generate a controller anyway.... Is anyone aware of the correct Rails 3 way of doing this?

• Debian apt dependency mismatch (libc6)

  Earlier, I tried to install package via apt-get (cython), but it failed with the Errors were encountered while processing: message, and since then, apt is refusing to install anything. apt-get check output below: root@dix:~# apt-get check Reading package lists... • Best way to fix security problems caused by windows updates?

  I have a laptop running Windows 7 32-bit. Last nights security updates caused my logitech mouse to stop working (specifically, it caused several USB ports to stop altogether). After reviewing the system event log I found that the IPBusEnum component was failing due to an activation security error. A little more research and I found that this was caused by the TrustedInstaller replacing the security permissions on those keys and generally mucking them up. To fix this I had to open regedit, take ownership of ALL the keys related to IPBusEnum and force it to use the inherited permissions from the tree. Is there a better way to fix this when MS screws up the updates? I would hate to have to walk around to a number of machines and manually fix the registry key security settings.

• No "Terminal Services" branch in "Group Policy Object Editor"

  Hi, We have several identical several servers in a hosting company. They run Windows 2003 R2 Std SP2 64bit. The servers are not in a domain. We have recently received a new server with the same configuration and hardware. However, the new server is different in some way. When we run "gpedit.msc /s" there are much less options in the tree than the other servers. Specifically we are missing the configuration of "Terminal Services". Many other items are missing under "Administrative templates" and "Windows components". • Backup Permissions for an Active Directory Profile Directory

  I have Folder Redirection turned on so the profiles are on a Windows shared folder on a File and Print Server... \folders\Profiles I want to back up the entire Profiles directory, but as Domain Admin I don't seem to have the privileges to "select all and copy" the entire directory structure. The user profile subfolders (Appdata, Documents, Desktop, Pictures, etc.) throw access denied errors... I tried to grant Domain Admins full privileges to the Profiles directory and thought the subfolders would inherit the privileges, but I get access denied errors just trying to set the permissions... How can I assign a user to the Profiles directory so that I can copy the entire directory tree to back it up?

• SoundManager2 has irregular latency

  I'm playing some notes at regular intervals. Each one is delayed by a random number of milliseconds, creating a jarring irregular effect. How do I fix it? Note: I'm OK with some latency, just as long as it's consistent. Answers of the type "implement your own small SoundManager2 replacement, optimized for timing-sensitive playback" are OK, if you know how to do that :) but I'm trying to avoid rewriting my whole app in flash for now. • Windows Live Family Safety Service keeps closing Start Menu

  Got my kids a new Toshiba Laptop for Christmas. I was setting it all up for them so it would be ready to go. Tonight I installed Windows Live Family Safety Parental Controls. In the process of testing I discovered that on all the accounts the Start Menu closes automatically within 3 seconds (or less) of opening. It seems that it happens every 3 seconds, so sometimes it is immediate, and if I open it again then it will stay open for a full 3 seconds. This of course is rather annoying, and I need to wrap it up so it is ready to go under the tree. I disabled the Windows Live Family Safety Service, and that fixed it. Enable it again and the behavior returns. Is this a feature of the service? Can I disable that feature and keep the other features?

• Giving a normal user and Mysql access to a common directory

  We need a common directory where Mysql can do a SELECT INTO OUTFILE and then the file can be picked up by a virtual server user in /home/theuser and worked on. I can perform the SELECT INTO OUTFILE into the /tmp/ dir but theuser does not have access here. Would it be ok to grant the user access to tmp or is that bad practice? The other option I looked at was creating a group 'theusermysql' containing the mysql user and theuser. I set the group on the tree /home/theuser/thedumpfolder and gave write permissions on thedumpfolder, but for some reason mysql still complains that it cannot write here. I'm completely stumped! What would be the best practice way to have a common folder for these two users?

• FindByIdentity in System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagment Memory Issues

  I'm working on an active directory managament application. In addition to the typical Create A New User, Enable/Disable an account, reset my password etc. it also managages application permissions for all of the clients web applications. Application management is handled by thousands of AD groups such as which are built from 3 letter codes for the application, section and site, there are also hundreds of AD groups which determine which applications and locations a coordinator can grant rights to. All of these groups in turn belong to other groups so I typically filter the groups list with the MemberOf property to find the groups that a user directly belongs to (or everyone has rights to do everything). I've made extensive use of the System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagment namespace using the FindByIdentity method in 31 places throughout the application. This method calls a private method FindPrincipalByIdentRefHelper on the internal ADStoreCtx class. A SearchResultCollection is created but not disposed so eventually typically once or twice a day the web server runs out of memory and all of the applications on the web server stop responsing until iis is reset because the resources used by the com objects aren't ever relased. There are places where I fall back to the underlying directory objects, but there are lot of places where I'm using the properties on the Principal - it's a vast improvement over using the esoteric ad property names in the .Net 2.0 Directory services code. I've contacted microsoft about the problem and it's been fixed in .Net 4.0 but they don't currently have plans to fix it in 3.5 unless there is intrest in the community about it. I only found information about it in a couple of places the MDSN documentation in the community content state's there is a memory leak at the bottom (guess I should have read that before using the the method) http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb345628.aspx And the class in question is internal and doesn't expose SearchResultsCollection outside the offending method so I can't get at the results to dispose them or inherit from the class and override the method. So my questions are Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so were you able to work around it? • How to merge-copy multiple folders in Outlook?

  In MS Outlook, I need to be able to incrementally copy items in multiple folders in the Exchange account to a local PST file with a mirrored folder structure. I need the items in each folder to be combined into the destination. For example, let's say on the server account I have a folder tree like this: Inbox SortedEmails1 SortedEmails2 SortedEmails3 I also have these same four folders in the local PST file, which I want to keep growing as I incrementally pull more messages from the Exchange server. Messages from "Inbox" should go to the local "Inbox", messages from "SortedEmails1" should go into "SortedEmails1" in the local PST, etc. I'd like to avoid manually iterating into every single folder and copying items. How can I do this?

Should it not be trying to "become guest user"?

• x86 instruction encoding tables

  I'm in middle of rewriting my assembler. While at it I'm curious about implementing disassembly as well. I want to make it simple and compact, and there's concepts I can exploit while doing so. It is possible to determine rest of the x86 instruction encoding from opcode (maybe prefix bytes are required too, a bit). I know many people have written tables for doing it. I'm not interested about mnemonics but instruction encoding, because it is an actual hard problem there. For each opcode number I need to know: does this instruction contain modrm? how many immediate fields does this instruction have? what encoding does an immediate use? is the immediate in field an instruction pointer -relative address? what kind of registers does the modrm use for operand and register fields? sandpile.org has somewhat quite much what I'd need, but it's in format that isn't easy to parse. Before I start writing and validating those tables myself, I decided to write this question. Do you know about this kind of tables existing somewhere? In a form that doesn't require too much effort to parse.

• Stack and Hash joint

  I'm trying to write a data structure which is a combination of Stack and HashSet with fast push/pop/membership (I'm looking for constant time operations). Think of Python's OrderedDict. I tried a few things and I came up with the following code: HashInt and SetInt. I need to add some documentation to the source, but basically I use a hash with linear probing to store indices in a vector of the keys. Since linear probing always puts the last element at the end of a continuous range of already filled cells, pop() can be implemented very easy without a sophisticated remove operation. I have the following problems: the data structure consumes a lot of memory (some improvement is obvious: stackKeys is larger than needed). some operations are slower than if I have used fastutil (eg: pop(), even push() in some scenarios). I tried rewriting the classes using fastutil and trove4j, but the overall speed of my application halved. What performance improvements would you suggest for my code? What open-source library/code do you know that I can try?

  When you press C-h i in Emacs, it shows what's called the top of the INFO tree, and it links to all kinds of manuals: AUCTeX, Org Mode, Emacs, Emacs FAQ, Emacs Lisp Intro, Elisp, ... . Is there a place where I can download all of them at once as html files? GNU Home page has links to some of them in html format: http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/elisp.html_node.tar.gz http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/emacs.html_node.tar.gz But I cannot find a link to a single tar.gz file packing all of them.

• VMware vSwitches and Dell PowerConnect BPDU guard

  I am using two Dell PowerConnect 6248 switches to connect a VMware host vSwitch. A discussion of config of Cisco switches for use with VMware advises to set physical ports connected to vSwitch with bpduguard and portfast. However, Dell switches don't have the bpduguard setting for individual ports. I can switch it off globally for all portfast ports, but I don't think I want to do that. Should I: Disable STP on the vSwitch connected ports? Leave STP on and enable portfast on the ports, and forget about bpduguard?   Hello, I went through the archives here and the Wikipedia page on Project management software, but didn't find information on this type of application to manage projects: Native Windows application (don't like web-based solutions; prefer native to cross-platform) Free or affordable, ie. not an Enterprise solution Scalable from one to a few concurrent users Like MS Projet et al., a project consists in tasks which can be further divided into sub-tasks, and the whole thing is displayed in an tree list An item that has a date set (either start/due) must be displayed in a Calendar view, so it's easy to know what work must be done each day The Calendar view must somehow sync with smartphones (at least BlackBerry) At this point, the apps I know either don't provide a Calendar at all, or do but they can't sync with smartphones, which forces me to copy/paste scheduled items into Outlook so they are synced with my BlackBerry :-/ Thank you for any help.

• How to change controller numbering/enumeration in Solaris 10?

  After moving a Solaris 10 server to a new machine, the rpool disk is now c1t0d0. We have some third party applications hard coded for c0t0d0. How can I change the controller enumeration on this machine? There is no longer a c0. I've tried rebuilding the /etc/path_to_inst, but the instance numbers don't seem to match up with the controller numbers. Also, it's not clear if i86pc platforms use this file. I've tried devfsadm -C to clear the dangling links, but I'm not sure how to cause devfsadm to start numbering from 0 again (or force certain devices in the tree to a specific controller number). Next I am going to try to create the symlinks manually in /dev/dsk and rdsk to point to the correct /devices. I feel like I am going way off path here. Any suggestions? Thanks

• Upgrade PHP to 5.3 in Ubuntu Server 8.04 with Plesk 9.5

  I have a dedicated server with Ubuntu 8.04, and really need to upgrade php to 5.3 version in order to deploy a new version of the system. This version of php is the default one in ubuntu 10.04, so I considered upgrading the OS, but after trying that, I lost my plesk installation, which annoyed my client. I tried adding the dotdeb.org repositories, but don't know why, after running an apt-get upgrade, I get this error: # apt-get upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages have been kept back: libapache2-mod-php5 php5 php5-cgi php5-cli php5-common php5-curl php5-gd php5-imap php5-mysql php5-sqlite php5-xsl 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 11 not upgraded. Any idea why is this happenning? Or do you know any alternative method (except compiling my own binaries) to upgrade php or update ubuntu without loosing plesk? Thanks!
