  • Domain model for an online WYSYWG webpage generator / runtime

    Hi all, I'm using C#, MVC, NHibernate and StructureMap as my IoC container, and need some ideas regarding my domain model. The application I'm working has two parts: an Authoring part and a Runtime part. The idea is to allow the user to create a webpage in Authoring (mostly a form actually) by choosing from a set of predefined controls. That webpage will be later used as a form in a call center environment (Runtime part), or may be used in an intranet portal, etc. Basically something similar to what a CMS would do. The difference is, of course, that the webpage/form the author generates will be used and fulfilled in runtime, and that authros should be able to freely create the webpage they want without limitations. I have a draft working model that allows a RunController to iterate over the ScriptPage (my class for the "generated webpage") Controls collection and uses partial views to render each of them. Works kind of fine. Basically I have a common ScriptControl class, and then I can create for example a TextInputControl or a DropDownControl by inheriting from that base class. I can also figure out the Authoring part of the app, although that will surely be fun in itself for sure. :) The biggest problem I have now is persistance. In order to be flexible, I want to be able to add more controls, and template controls (think of an Address composite control) in sepparate DLLs, so I think having a relational model that handles very possible control is not the way to go. My current thinking is using a kind of ObjectStore: binary-serializing the ScriptPage object that contains the List collection and deserializing at Runtime, but I'm not sure how good will it work with NHibernate and how good the performance will be. Serializing a small "page" with 10 controls results in 7964 bytes, for example. Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance, excuse the length. ;)

  • Why is this not a valid XML DTD? (Parameter entity and #PCDATA)

    Hi, Using the DTD validator here, I am informed that the following DTD is invalid. <!ENTITY % text "(#PCDATA|L)*"> <!ELEMENT H (%text;)+> <!ELEMENT L (#PCDATA)> The error message is: "A '(' character or an element type is required within declaration of element type "H"." at line 2, column 22. Can anyone please point out why it is invalid? The error message is not exactly very friendly to me. Thanks.

  • String generator issue

    I want to write a method which returns a string. So far so good. The creation of the string however is quite complicated. I have 3 string lists - the first one has 155 entries, the second one - 9, the third one 21. I want my method if called enough times(155*9*21) to return all the possible combinations of values from the 3 lists (basically this method should keep count on how many times it was called and return only one combination each time). Any ideas how to accomplish that? I have 155*9*22 possible combinations. The first time the method is called it should take List1(0), List2(0), List3(0). After that in the next 21 iterations, the index of the third list is only changed. Once all the elements from the third list have been used increment the index of the second list and so on. Once the method has produced all the possible combinations (155*9*22) I want it to start from the beginning.

    Will the following piece of code work as expected in a multi-threaded scenario? int getUniqueID() { static int ID=0; return ++ID; } It's not necessary that the IDs to be contiguous - even if it skips a value, it's fine. Can it be said that when this function returns, the value returned will be unique across all threads?

It is only allowed to use one static variable and at most 3 elementary steps, where each step consists of only one basic arithmetic operation of arity 1 or 2. The script works fine for a user that has < 5000 followers but I tried adjusting the script using cursors to collect the complete set of users.   • What are the drawbacks of sending XML to browsers and let them apply XSLT?

    Context Working as a freelance developer, I often made websites completely based on XSLT. In other words, on every request, an XML file is generated, containing everything we need to know about the page content: the name of the user currently logged in, the top menu entries, if this menu is dynamic/configurable, the text to display in a specific area of the page, etc. Then XSL process (caches, etc.) it to HTML/XHTML page to send to the browser. It has a good point to make it easier to create small-scale websites, especially with PHP. It is a sort of template engine, but which I prefer to other template engines because it's much more powerful than most of template engines, and because I know it better and like it. It is also possible, when need, to give an access to raw XML data on demand for an automated access, without the need to create separate APIs. Of course, it will fail completely on any medium-scale or large-scale website, since, even with good caching techniques, XSL still degrades overall website performance and requires more CPU serverside. Question Modern browsers have the ability to take an XML file and to transform it with an associated XSL file declared in XML like <?xml-stylesheet href="demo.xslt" type="text/xsl"?>. Firefox 3 can do it. Internet Explorer 8 can do it too. It means that it is possible to migrate XSL processing from the server to the client side for 50% of users (according on browser statistics on several websites where I may want to implement this). It means that those 50% of users will receive only the XML file at each request, thus reducing their and server's bandwidth (XML file being much shorter than its processed HTML analog), and reducing server's CPU usage. What are the drawbacks of this technique? I thought about several ones, but it doesn't apply in this situation: Difficult implementation and the need to choose, based on the browser request, when to send raw XML and when to transform it to HTML instead. Obviously, the system will not be much more difficult then the actual one. The only change to make is to add XSL file link to every XML, and to add a browser check. More IO and bandwidth usage, since the XSLT file will be downloaded by the browsers, instead of being cached by the server. I don't think it will be a problem, since XSLT file will be cached by the browsers (like images, or CSS, or JavaScript files are cached actually). Possibly some problems on client side, like maybe problems when saving a page in some browsers. Difficulty to debug code: it is impossible to obtain an HTML source the browser is actually using, since the only displayed source is the downloaded XML. On the other hand, I rarely go look at HTML code on client side, and in most cases, it is unusable directly (whitespace being removed).

But I don’t think I’ve blogged about the fact that it all goes a bit wrong if you have special characters in the strings you’re concatenating. Generally, I don’t even worry about this.     Last week, I had the opportunity to help implement and integrate a strong password policy into the legacy web application developed using ASP technology. The solution I proposed was to use jQuery to display the password strength meter to help users create strong passwords. One of my colleagues asked if we would have to modify multiple pages and files if the client decided to alter the password policy. The answer is no. Thanks to jQuery, the client-side script and code behind can share the same information. The password policy information is stored in an XML file and the client-side script and code behind are reading from this to perform the password strength validation.

There's a section in the recommended .htaccess that restricts outside access to the xml files that come with extensions. However, it also keeps my sitemap.xml file from being accessed.     We have 2 servers, 1 already configured with .net which works fine and a new one which appears to be configured the same but when I open an xml page in Internet Explorer it complains about the <% tag. We have IIS on win srvr 2003 SP2. The website is configured with .NET 1.1.4322. In ISAPI extensions have set the .XML extension to use c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_isapi.dll But the page: <property name="documentmaxage" value="0"/> <property name="documentmaxstale" value="0"/> <var name="m_Prompt_Path" /> <form id="InitVoiceXmlDoc"> <block> <assign name="m_Prompt_Path" expr="&quot;<% Response.Write(Request.QueryString["m_Prompt_Path"]); %>&quot;"/> </block> </form> gives the error: The XML page cannot be displayed Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later. The character '<' cannot be used in an attribute value. Error processing resource 'http://localhost:11119/fails.xml'. Lin... &quo... We have the same config on another server which works fine. So are there other options apart from the ISAPI extensions that I need to look at. If I suffix the page .aspx, of course it works fine.
