• Can I downgrade from the Windows 8.1 preview to Windows 8 if I have an OEM CD?

  The internet is full of vague information about how you can downgrade the Windows 8.1 preview to Windows 8, and I kind of want to try it, but only if it's not going to be too inconvenient to uninstall if I need to. Here is my exact situation: I installed Windows 8 using an OEM CD. If I install the Windows 8.1 preview, can I use the factory restore feature to downgrade back to Windows 8? Does this change based on whether I installed using the Windows Store or the .iso?

• VirtualBox guest network lost after host disconnects

  I am running VirtualBox both on a Snow Leopard OSX host machine and on a Windows Vista host machine. Whenever my host machines lose internet connection the guest machines seem to lose internet connectivity permanently even after the host connection to the Internet is reestablished. Resetting guest networking on the guest os, disconnecting cable via host virtualbox settings, and even restarting the guest OS do not help at all. The guest no longer can access the Internet. The only solution is restarting VirtualBox itself while the host is connected to the Internet. This really gets to be a pain when the host goes into sleep mode or I disconnect my laptop at work and then reconnect at home. Guests are setup with NAT networking. It affects guest machines with both Ubuntu and Windows XP OS'es. Is this expected behavior? Does anyone know of a fix? Or am I setup incorrectly?

• Internal disk not correctly recognised by Windows 7

  i'm having problems configuring a disk in a brand new, clean windows-7 install. here are some system specifics- . disk- western digital velociraptor wd6000hlhx . mobo- gigabyte z77x-ud3h . bios sata-mode set to ahci [not raid], w/disk connected to sata0 [6gb/s hi-speed sata]. . windows 7 enterprise sp1 x64 the disk is recognized by bios and correctly identified [name & size ok]. the disk is also recognized by windows on a h/w level, but it won't show up in the explorer. windows reports the device is working correctly. windows disk manager shows the drive, but says it's uninitialized and has no partitions [which is incorrect]. if i try to initialize the drive, windows throws an error saying that it "cannot find the file specified". [which file???] before connecting the drive to the new machine, i partitioned and formatted the disk under windows xp sp2, giving it 2 partitions [mbr, not gpt] and copying over a boatload of data. obviously none of this appears under windows 7. removing the disk from the new machine and replacing it back in the windows xp machine shows the disk and all data are intact and functional. i'd like to have windows 7 recognize the disk w/o having to lose the data and start over. is this possible? if so, how would i do that? I checked this post, but even though the problem seems identical, the information didn't help. any help appreciated. thanks!

  After running chkdsk C: /F /R and finding out that my hard disk has 24 KB in bad sectors (log is posted below), I decided to run Windows 7's System File Checker utility (sfc /scannow). SFC showed the ff. message after I ran it: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log."   The description for "Use mandatory profiles on the RD Session Host server" is a little ambiguous: This policy setting allows you to specify whether Remote Desktop Services uses a mandatory profile for all users connecting remotely to the RD Session Host server. If you enable this policy setting, Remote Desktop Services uses the path specified in the Set path for Remote Desktop Services Roaming User Profile policy setting as the root folder for the mandatory user profile. All users connecting remotely to the RD Session Host server use the same user profile. If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, mandatory user profiles are not used by users connecting remotely to the RD Session Host server. I have a situation where only some users need to use mandatory profiles for logging in to a Remote Desktop Session Host. If I have some users with ntuser.dat and some users ntuser.man in their roaming profile what will RD Session Host do To a user who has ntuser.man in their roaming profile and has the setting set to Disabled? • Password Cracking Windows Accounts

  At work we have laptops with encrypted harddrives. Most developers here (on occasion I have been guilty of it too) leave their laptops in hibernate mode when they take them home at night. Obviously, Windows (i.e. there is a program running in the background which does it for windows) must have a method to unencrypt the data on the drive, or it wouldn't be able to access it. That being said, I always thought that leaving a windows machine on in hibernate mode in a non-secure place (not at work on a lock) is a security threat, because someone could take the machine, leave it running, hack the windows accounts and use it to encrypt the data and steal the information. When I got to thinking about how I would go about breaking into the windows system without restarting it, I couldn't figure out if it was possible. I know it is possible to write a program to crack windows passwords once you have access to the appropriate file(s). But is it possible to execute a program from a locked Windows system that would do this? I don't know of a way to do it, but I am not a Windows expert. If so, is there a way to prevent it? I don't want to expose security vulnerabilities about how to do it, so I would ask that someone wouldn't post the necessary steps in details, but if someone could say something like "Yes, it's possible the USB drive allows arbitrary execution," that would be great! EDIT: The idea being with the encryption is that you can't reboot the system, because once you do, the disk encryption on the system requires a login before being able to start windows. With the machine being in hibernate, the system owner has already bypassed the encryption for the attacker, leaving windows as the only line of defense to protect the data.

  if my understanding is correct, the following is what happens when a host A wants to communicate with a machine X outside its network. 1) The host ,checks it routing table to find out if there is any direct routes to the machine. 2) It finds out that the machine is outside its network and has to sent the packets to the default gateway(router) R. 3) The host sents an ARP broadcast to get the mac of the router R. 4) After getting the MAC, the host creates a packet with src IP and MAC as that of the host A, dest IP of the remote machine X and dest MAC of the router R. 5)The router R receives the packet, either drops its or sents its to its next hope, which can be another router or the remote machine X itself. Can anyone explain, how the steps would be, if i set the default gateway of the host A as host A itself...?

With the taskbar buttons set to "Combine when taskbar is full" or "Never combine", when I right-click, Shift + right-click, or Ctrl + right-click either the button or the Aero preview for a window in the group I get a menu allowing me to perform window operations on just that one window rather than each window in the group. When I have a non-combined group of windows in the taskbar, how would I cascade, stack, etc. that group of windows?

  I created a new windows 7 SP1 base image. Everything is all fine and dandy with that. So i am now installing standard applications I would like Quicktime to manage .mov files. The only problem is WMP (Windows Media Player) won't give up the association to .mov files. It's driving me crazy... i've been reading threads on how to fix file associations. I would like to do it via registry, powershell or cmdline. • How to move the Windows 7 bootloader to the Windows 7 partition?

  I recently installed Windows 7 in a triple boot setup alongside XP and Linux. When I was finished and was in the process of restoring the bootloader for Linux I discovered something strange about what Windows 7 had done. I discovered that Windows 7 had not installed a bootloader to it's own partition, and instead had instead set up a bootloader on the pre-existing XP partition that offers a choice between 7 and XP. This behaviour has been noticed by others. Now my booting is slightly odd. I have GRUB on the MBR which lets me choose between Linux and Windows. When I select Windows I have Grub boot to the XP partition where I get the 2nd choice between 7 and XP. Why doesn't the Windows 7 installer put the Windows 7 bootloader on the Windows 7 partition like all previous MS OSs? This is now going to be a real problem for me, as I now want to wipe the XP partition and install something else there (probably another non-MS OS). How can I move the bootloader for Windows 7 onto the Windows 7 partition, thus making it bootable and allowing me to safely wipe the XP partition?

  I have an IIS server running several websites. It is stationed behind an ISA server of which I do not have access. But I do have all of the defined websites (on port 80) routed to my server. So I want to take down one website, say it's foo.bar.com and in its place setup a LAMP server instead using a VM software. It needs to run alongside all the existing websites and it should not interfere with them. I have full control over my server, but not the ISA. Is this possible? If so, how? • Wrong Sound Blaster's PCI ID within Windows

  I own Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium, it was working with no problems under Linux or Windows 7. It's original PCI ID is 1102:000b but now I see different within MS Windows. BIOS setup: 1102:000b GNU/Linux: 1102:000b Windows 7: 1102:000d Windows 8: 1102:000d In last days I'm experimenting with IOMMU PCI passthrough in Xen and I tried to pass this device to virtual Windows 7 and 8. Here I found this problem. I don't know if this is just coincidence or reason of my problem but it's wrong even in physical system. Windows detects 1102:000d as a High Definition Audio sound device (I guess this name, I have localized Windows, but this is general name, the same was with Realtek HDA before drivers), it's playing but it's unstable (Windows speaker testing can crash that application) and I can't install Creative software. Used driver is hdaudio.sys. Booting in BIOS or UEFI mode doesn't change anything. Nor CMOS clean. Someone met the same problem.

  I'm about to deploy a Hyper-V Server, that will have 2 local drives: 250GB for VMs, 2TB for Shares. Does Hyper-V Server (standalone, not as a role) allow you to setup Network Shares? Or will I have to setup a VM with the 2TB drive allocated to it, for setting up the Shares? If Hyper-V supports Shares, would there be a performance benefit? The Shares will be used by both the VMs on the Hyper-V Server and other Servers within the Network.

  Will installing Sun Virtual Box bash or interfere with my VMWare installtion? I don't need to run VMs from both Virtual-Machine software packages at the same time but I do need to run some older Virtual-Machines from Sun-Virtualbox on the same 64-bit Windows 7 host until I can migrate those VMs to VMWare. Before switching from Linux host to Windows host, I ensured to export the VirtualBox VM to an OVF "appliance" with intentions of importing into VMWare Workstation 7. But VMWare gives me an error stating it can't import it. Background info My old workstation host: 32-bit Ubuntu 9.04 running Sun Virtual Box 3.x hosting Windows-XP VM Guest for Windows Software app development (VS2008, etc) Needs I need to get my original Sun-VBox Windows-XP Guest running on my new Windows 7 Workstation either imported into VMWare or running on the Windows version of Sun-Virtual box (I have the VM-Guest Backed up and copied to the new computer data drive.   My system doesn't boot at all, upon starting it takes me to the Windows Error Recovery screen saying "Windows failed to start, a recent software or hardware change might be the cause" and gives two options Launch System Repair (Recommended) Start Windows normally But neither options work, upon clicking either of them, some progress bars get displayed and the screen just freezes on "Starting Windows". I tried booting from the Windows 7 disk but it too freezes on the "Starting Windows" screen. I even tried booting from ubuntu, slax linux, but they don't work too.

Apart from that, everything else was shown as compatible, including my old ATI Radeon 9550/X1050 card: ATI Radeon 9550/X1550 Series: This device is compatible with Windows 7. The thing that concerns me is that people around the web seem to be unable to actually find a Windows 7 driver for this card. Even the ATI web page states that this is a legacy device: If the user chooses to, they can install the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista graphics driver under Windows 7. [...] Using the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista driver under Windows 7 is not officially supported by AMD [...] Should I trust the Advisor and continue with the update? Does this mean Microsoft will provide at least a generic driver which will allow hardware acceleration with this card?
