• Any way to surround code block with Curly Braces {} in VS2008?

  I always find myself needing to enclose a block of code in curly braces { }, but unfortunately that isn't included in the C# surround code snippets, which seems to be an oversight. I couldn't find anything on building your own surround snippets either (just other kinds of snippets). I am actually running Resharper too, but it doesn't seem to have this functionality either (or I haven't figured how to activate it). We have a coding standard of including even a single line of code after an if or else in curly braces, so if I could just make Resharper do that refactor automatically that would be even better!

I guess ancestor() filter does not help because those entities are modified in memory. Should I not to iterate reference property in transaction function and always provide them as function parameters like def bulk_update_album_group(updated,deleted): ??? Is there any good coding pattern for this situation?

• Making Swedish characters show properly in Windows Command Prompt using Python in Notepad++

  The title explains it well. I have set up Notepad++ to open the Python script in the command prompt when I press F8 but all Swedish characters looks messed up when opening in CMD but perfectly fine in e.g IDLE. This simple example code: #!/usr/bin/env python #-*- coding: UTF-8 -*- print "åäö" Looks like this. As you can see the output of the batch file I use to open Python in cmd below shows the characters correctly but not the Python script above it. How do I fix this? I open the file in cmd using this method

• Best way to implement symfony admin components

  I am coding a backend in symfony using the sfThemePlugin (part of sympal). The dashboard should allow for new "admin plugins" to be added fairly easily. What I'd like is to have a config.yml config like this: sf_easy_admin_plugin: enabled_admin_dashboard_plugins: [Twitter, QuickBlogPost, QuickConfig] and when these are set it includes the correct components into the template. I'd like to have each one be in it's own plugin (sfTwitterEasyAdminModule, sfQuickBlogPostEasyAdminModule) or have them all bundled in one (sfEasyAdminModules). Is there anyway to accomplish this? As far I know symfonys include_component() only let's you include components from the current module and not from other plugins. Each "component" or admin plugin should render an icon for the dashboard and a html form that will be hidden until the user clicks the icon.

  Hi folks, what is your opinion or better off your practical experience using WCF to work with WSS instead of SP web services? I am writing some custom library for our software to store and retrieve files from WSS document libraries using sharepoint web services. I am not entirely happy with the performance of the sp web services - a bit too slow in many cases. Now, microsoft claims a significant improvements in WCF over remoting and I am looking into a good way to use WCF for my file services. Any suggestions or ideas? • How to get list of views from "mail" in Lotus Notes using .NET?

  I am accessing mail from Lotus notes. And in order to access "Inbox" i am using below code: _notesDatabase = _lotusNotesServerSession.GetDatabase(LotusNotesServer, "mail\\" + nsfName, false); NotesView inbox = _notesDatabase.GetView("($Inbox)"); Similarly for "Drafts". But here i am specifying name of each view in GetView method. Which is not good coding. I want to list these views "Inbox","Drafts" programaticaly using C#. Can anybody give me solution? • How to? - part of the site over ssl, other part not

  What is common practice for coding web applications where part of the site has to be secured (e.g. checkout section) and part not necessarily, lets say homepage. As far as I know sharing sessions in between http and https parts of the site is not easily possible (or is it?). What would be common approach if I wanted to display on http page like homepage, shopping cart data (items) that users ordered on https pages? How those two parts of the site would communicate if necessary? Also isn't it security flaw in popular shopping carts as it seems that many of these have only checkout pages secured (ssl) and the rest not? I'm using php if it makes any difference.

  What is the common pattern to structure web application where part of it has to be secured. So lets say I have page_a and page_b which do not need to be secured, although should display login information (login fields or login details once user logged in). This web app. also would have secured pages (admin, checkout or similar) secure_page_c and secure_page_d. My questions are: What is the common folder structure for such assuming I code in php with no frameworks? Also how shall I deal with session variables in case user navigates lets say from secure_page_b to non secure page_a or vice versa? • Run java with highest security setting

  I'm currently writing an in house coding challenge web application and I am wondering if there is any other security precaution I would need to have other than below java option at runtime. java -Djava.security.manager=default Basically, challenges would be more of single threaded math and algorithm focused. So I would need to enable basic data structure objects and disable any file, sockets, threading or any thing that might be not so important. Based on my quick search turning on security manager as above seems to be a solution but since this is a security related I would like to be sure before it goes alive. Is there anything else I could do more?

  hey folks, I try to realize a little game project to dive deeper into OO programming (winforms c++/cli). I already started coding but now I´d like to make a re-design. For the beginning the game should consist of four parts like game-engine, user interface, highscore and playground.   Since i'm working with Titanium i realzed that its current JavaScript Interpreter doesn't accept specific coding-styles. So for for-loops and if-statements i have to have braces, even though i only want to span one line. Furthermore there is more i have to change if i want to use a Javascript Library like underscore.js.   As I'm coding for both Windows and Linux, I have a whole host of problems. Microsoft Visual C++ has no stdint header, but for that I wrote my own. Now I found out that MS C++'s new operator does not throw an exception, so I want to fix this a quickly as possible. I know I can define a Macro with Parameters in Parenthesis, can I define a macro that replaces MyClass x = new MyClass(); with #ifdef MSC_VER if(!(MyClass x = new MyClass()) { throw new std::bad_alloc(); } #else MyClass x = new MyClass(); #endif (or something equivalent), AND works in BOTH MS C++ and G++ ? Or alternatively if that is not possible, a batch file to run over the Code to do this? I have become rather dependent on this exception being thrown.

Example: if I have a Preference setting for "Discard old messages" that specifies the number of days after which messages need to be cleaned up. • How can I clean up this SELECT query?

  I'm running PHP 5 and MySQL 5 on a dedicated server (Ubuntu Server 8.10) with full root access. I'm cleaning up some LAMP code I've inherited and I've a large number of SQL selects with this type of construct: SELECT ... FROM table WHERE LCASE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE( strSomeField, ' ', '-'), ',', ''), '/', '-'), '&', ''), '+', '') ) = $somevalue Ignoring the fact that the database should never have been constructed to require such a select in the first place, and the $somevalue field will need to be parameterised to plug the gaping security hole, what is my best option for fixing the WHERE condition into something less offensive? If I was using MSSQL or Oracle I'd simply put together a user-defined function, but my experience with MySQL is more limited and I've not constructed a UDF with it before, although I'm happy coding C. Update: For all those who've already raised their eyebrows at this in the original code, $somevalue is actually something like $GET['product']—there are a few variations on the theme. In this case the select is pulling the product back from the database by product name—after stripping out characters so it matches what could be previously passed as a URI parameter.

• What technology to use for a RIA

  I have to develop a online business software solution (similar to ERP) for a company to manage the information exchange for internal use and with external partners. It should be online. What technology should I use, I have checked framewroks like: Flex, Silverlight, Google/GWT, sencha (ExtJS), jQuery, DoJo, Telereik, Infrajistics and others similar. But they seam to be very low level programming. May be this is advantage for other projects, where you need more flexibility, but this project is stright forward. I need something more focused on business software (tables, forms, processes) where and eventually more efficient with less coding, or something I can save time. Is force.com an option? But I can not install this on the customer's servers... Do you have any ideas for me for a web based framework focused on business applications?

• sqlite & python - only pulls the first result

  This is pretty strange (admitedly, this is my first attempt with python / sqlite), but I can seem to get all of the rows if I do a fetchAll(), but other than that - no matter what I try, always ends up in the db only returning the first row - the second iteration stops because a null is returned. Wondering if there is something wrong with how I am coding this up in python? • Is it inefficient to access a python class member container in a loop statement?

  Hi there. I'm trying to adopt some best practices to keep my python code efficient. I've heard that accessing a member variable inside of a loop can incur a dictionary lookup for every iteration of the loop, so I cache these in local variables to use inside the loop. My question is about the loop statement itself... if I have the following class: class A(object): def init(self) self.myList = [ 'a','b','c', 'd', 'e' ] Does the following code in a member function incur one, or one-per-loop-iteration (5) dictionary lookups? for letter in self.myList: print letter IE, should I adopt the following pattern, if I am concerned about efficiency... localList = self.myList for letter in localList: print letter or is that actually LESS efficient due to the local variable assign? Note, I am aware that early optimization is a dangerous pitfall if I'm concerned about the overall efficiency of code development. Here I am specifically asking about the efficiency of the code, not the coding. Thanks in advance! D

• How would you measure conversion for an iPhone App Download?

  I want to test how users convert from my web page to downloading my iPhone app. Right now the best funnel I figured out was to go through a page that pings Google Analytics and then redirects to an iTunes link. But this funnel only measures conversion for users who got redirected to iTunes and not if they actually downloaded the app once they saw it in iTunes. Anyone knows of a way to measure conversion to the actual download? (I know this is not a coding question but still a problem a app developers would encounter trying to market their app)

  hi, i have philosophised about the purpose of stack a little bit and after some coding i figured out what is it's strength. The only thing that lies in my stomache is how does it work with functions? I tried to make some easy function for adding two numbers using universal registers but I suppose that's not how does it work in C for example.. where are all the parameters, local variables and where is the result stored? how would you rewrite this to assembler?(how would compiler for C rewrite it?) int function(int a, int &b, int *c){ return a*(b++)+(*c); } i know this example kinda sucks.. but this way i can understand all the possibilities

  I have Java experience and recently am doing some C++ coding. My question is that if I have class A, in which I have to instantiate class B and class C as two of the member variables of A. If in the constructor of A, should I assume that allocations of class B and C never fail, and handle the bad allocation exception in the destructor of A? If I don't make that assumption, meaning that I add some try catch block to catch bad_alloc of class B and class C, then if the allocation exception occurs, should I do clean up in the constructor of A? What are the recommended practices? If "new" generates a bad allocation, what value does the pointer carry?

  My post title almost states it all: How do I download a file from an FTP server using FTP over SSL using .NET? I have read a bit and there are several 3rd party components to purchase that wrap up this functionality. The deal is, this is a very specefic need and is not going to grow much, so if downloading a file from an FTP server using FTP over SSL can be done using the .NET Framework (i.e. System.Net namespace or something), then that would be best. I don't need a ton of functionality, but if for some reason coding against a secure FTP server is a nightmare or not doable through the .NET Framework BCL that would be nice to know, as a 3rd party .dll might be best. • Why is 'virtual' optional for overridden methods in derived classes?

  When a method is declared as virtual in a class, its overrides in derived classes are automatically considered virtual as well, and the C++ language makes this keyword virtual optional in this case: class Base { virtual void f(); }; class Derived : public Base { void f(); // 'virtual' is optional but implied. }; My question is: What is the rationale for making virtual optional? I know that it is not absolutely necessary for the compiler to be told that, but I would think that developers would benefit if such a constraint was enforced by the compiler. E.g., sometimes when I read others' code I wonder if a method is virtual and I have to track down its superclasses to determine that. And some coding standards (Google) make it a 'must' to put the virtual keyword in all subclasses.
