  • 2-column table with two foreign keys. Performance/design question.

    Hello everyone! I recently ran into a quite complex problem and after looking around a lot I couldn't find a solution to it. I've found answers to my questions many times before on stackoverflow.com, so I decided to post here. So I'm making a user/group managment system for a web-based project, and I'm storing all related data into a postgreSQL database. This system relies on three tables: USERS GROUPS GROUP_USERS The two first tables simply define all the users and all the groups on the site, and the last table, GROUP_USERS, stores the groups every user is part of. It only has two columns: USER_ID GROUP_ID Since every user can be a member of several groups, I decided to make a separate table for this purpose, rather than storing a comma separated column in the USERS-table. Now, both columns are foreign keys, and I want to make them both primary keys as well, this since each combination of USER_ID and GROUP_ID has to be unique, and if I give them the constraint UNIQUE pgAdmin tells me that each table should have at least one Primary key. But now I am stuck with what seems to be a lot of indexes and relations to a very small table only containing numbers. In the end, I want this table to be as fast as possible, even if containing tens of thousands of rows. Size on disk shouldn't be a problem since its just all numbers anyway, but it feels quite stupid to have a full-sized index refering to a smaller table. Should I stick with my current solution, store comma-separated values in a column in the USERS-table or is there any other solution I should be aware of. PS. I don't want to use an array-column, even if they are supported by postgreSQL. I want to be as generic as possible so I can switch database later on, if necessary. EDIT: I other words, will using a compound primary key and two foreign keys in one table with only two columns have a negative impact on performance rather than the opposite due to the size of the generated index?   • AJAX/JSONP Question. Access id denied using IE while requesting corss domain.

    Ok, Here we go. I have already searched the Stack for the answer i have found some useful info but i want to clear up some more things. I also search the net for the answer but no real help. I have worked with some api (yelp, ouside.in). In yelp i use to inject the script to head with the url request to the api with a callback funcion. I worked fine in all browsers. But while using outside.in api when i call the url the callback in not working. In yelp they have a url field can be used like that callback=callbackfuncion so the callback will automatically called. But in outside.in there is not such field available. Is there are any standard command for callback function which will work regardless of any server/api? I also tried a standard ajax request using jQuery $.ajax() function. It worked for my local pc for both IE and other browser but did not working in IE showing the error: access denied, other borwser seems ok. Firebug in my FF also don't notice any errors.     Hello all I'm trying to create a page where a list of items are displayed in a row where there are multiple columns on the left, but only one on the right, encased within a horizontialFieldManager. Currently I have the following code to attempt to do the following: VerticalFieldManager mainScreenManager = new VerticalFieldManager(); mainScreenManager.add(titleField); for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { HorizontalFieldManager itemAreaManager = new HorizontalFieldManager(); VerticalFieldManager itemTextFieldsAreaManager = new VerticalFieldManager(); itemTextFieldsAreaManager.add(new RichTextField(contentArticleTitle[i])); itemTextFieldsAreaManager.add(new RichTextField(contentArticleDate[i])); itemTextFieldsAreaManager.add(new SeparatorField()); itemAreaManager.add(itemTextFieldsAreaManager); itemAreaManager.add(new ButtonField("", 0)); mainScreenManager.add(itemAreaManager); }; add(mainScreenManager); Now the issue I'm experiencing is probably obvious to those familiar with managers; the horizontialFieldManager has the first item added to it consuming the entire width available, thereby never showing the button. What I'm wondering is how can I tell this in an extended class to only take up a certain percentage of the available width? I've tried subLayout and setting the width to be a certain amount, but it will just show the button instead of the text (pretty much same problem, just reversed)

  • Beginner MVC question - Correct approach to render out a List and details?

    I'm trying to set up a page where I display a list of items and the details of the selected item. I have it working but wonder whether I have followed the correct approach. I'll use customers as an example I have set the aspx page to inherit from an IEnumerable of Customers. This seems to be the standard approach to display the list of items. For the Details I have added a Customer user control which inherits from customer. I think i'm on the right track so far but I was a bit confused as to where I should store the id of the customer whose details I intend to display. I wanted to make the id optional in the controller action so that the page could be hit using "/customers" or "customers/1" so I made the arg optional and stored the id in the ViewData like this: public ActionResult Customers(string id = "0") { Models.DBContext db = new Models.DBContext(); var cList = db.Customers.OrderByDescending(c => c.CustomerNumber); if (id == "0") { ViewData["CustomerNumber"] = cList.First().CustomerNumber.ToString(); } else { ViewData["CustomerNumber"] = id; } return View("Customers", cList); } I then rendered the User control using RenderPartial in the front end: <%var CustomerList = from x in Model where x.CustomerNumber == Convert.ToInt32(ViewData["CustomerNumber"]) select x; Customer c = (Customer)CustomerList.First(); %> <% Html.RenderPartial("Customer",c); %> Then I just have an actionLink on each listed item: <%: Html.ActionLink("Select", "Customers", new { id = item.CustomerNumber })% It all seems to work but as MVC is new to me I would just be interested in others thoughts on whether this is a good approach?

    Okay, for all my coding so far I been using GETs and only $_POST on the same script. Ex: profile.php would show all the posts an user made and under each of their post, they can edit their post.   • Objective-C style question: do "release" or "nil" properties in dealloc?

    Hi, Apple usually release ivars in dealloc but is there anything wrong with nilling the properties in dealloc? I mean instead of this: - (void) dealoc(){ [myRetainedProperty release]; [super dealloc]; } write code like this: - (void) dealoc(){ self.myRetainedProperty = nil; [super dealloc]; } I know that it is one additional method call but on the other hand it is safer as it doesn't crashes when you change your property form retain to assign and forget to amend dealloc. What do you think? Can you think about any other reason to use release instead of setting nil besides performance?

In the original string I got, I can replace the string such as to something else. BUT, in the same original string, if I want to replace a much long string such as the following, it won’t work.   • Where to start with the development of first database driven Web App (long question)?

    Hi all, I've decided to develop a database driven web app, but I'm not sure where to start. The end goal of the project is three-fold: 1) to learn new technologies and practices, 2) deliver an unsolicited demo to management that would show how information that the company stores as office documents spread across a cumbersome network folder structure can be consolidated and made easier to access and maintain and 3) show my co-workers how Test Drive Development and prototyping via class diagrams can be very useful and reduces future maintenance headaches. I think this ends up being a basic CMS to which I have generated a set of features, see below. 1) Create a database to store the site structure (organized as a tree with a 'project group'-project structure). 2) Pull the site structure from the database and display as a tree using basic front end technologies. 3) Add administrator privileges/tools for modifying the site structure. 4) Auto create required sub pages* when an admin adds a new project. 4.1) There will be several sub pages under each project and the content for each sub page is different. 5) add user privileges for assigning read and write privileges to sub pages. What I would like to do is use Test Driven Development and class diagramming as part of my process for developing this project. My problem; I'm not sure where to start. I have read on Unit Testing and UML, but never used them in practice. Also, having never worked with databases before, how to I incorporate these items into the models and test units?     Desired end result: user taps a UIImageView and the image changes to another image (a subsequent tap returns the image to the original state) Problem: I add a (unique) selector to a bunch of UIImageViews (in an array) and point the action at the same function - let's call this function imageTapped: for now. Here is my code so far: -(void)imageTapped:(UITapGestureRecognizer *)tapGesture { UIImageView *view = tapGesture.view; // rest of code... } This code actually works fine but gets a warning when I run it: "Incompatible objective c types initilizing 'struct UIView *', expected 'struct UIImageView *' Any way to get rid of this? Not sure how casting works in objective c... primitive types seem to work fine such as (int)someFloat works fine but (UIImageView)someUiView doesn't work. Like I said, code works alright when I run it but would like to get ride of the compiler warning. Any help would be awesome.... I am very new to objective c (or any non java language for that matter) so be gentle. Thanks in advance.

    I just did an upgrade of my server to Fedora 17 and merged some configuration files containing .rpmnew into the existing ones. I have been successfully logging my php errors in a separate log file by keeping the following in php.ini: log_errors = On error_log = /var/log/php-errors.log I am not sure why the errors are being logged to /var/log/httpd/error_log after the upgrade despite keeping the settings above. Also, $ ls -l /var/log/php-errors.log -rwxrwxr--. 1 apache myself 232 Dec 13 16:49 /var/log/php-errors.log shows that apache did own the php error log file. What could be causing PHP errors to be logged into apache error log file?

  • Google App Engine/GWT/Eclipse Plugin Newbie Question- how to autobuild client side resources?

    Hi there, I'm tinkering with the default GWT application generated by the Google Eclipse plugin when I click the Google "New Web Application Project" button in Eclipse 3.5. This will no doubt be familiar to many of you.. basically there is an h1 title stating "Web Application Starter Project," a text field, and a Send button. What I've found is that whenever I make changes to the client side resources, e.g. change the text on the Send button to "Submit" in the .java file, Eclipse does not appear to autobuild these resources. In fact I have to rebuild the entire project in order for these changes to be reflected in my browser. I do have "build automatically" selected in eclipse. I should state that this is my second GWT project, the first was almost entirely server side (restlet on GAE) and everything built automatically nicely. When I first tried this new project with updated client resources, on refreshing my browser, the browser stated "you may need to (re)compile your project." I'm not sure if this is relevant but I thought I'd mention it all the same. So what's going on? How do I get Eclipse/GWT to autobuild these client side resources? Cheers for any help you can offer! :-)

    I'm not that smart like some of you geniuses. I need some help from a math whiz. My app draws a graph of the users weight over time. I need a surefire way to always get the right pixel position to draw the weight point at for a given weight. For example, say I want to plot the weight 80.0(kg) on the graph when the range of weights is 80.0 to 40.0kg. I want to be able to plug in the weight (given I know the highest and lowest weights in the range also) and get the pixel result 400(y) (for the top of the graph). The graph is 300 pixels high (starts at 100 and ends at 400). The highest weight 80kg would be plot at 400 while the lowest weight 40kg would be plot at 100. And the intermediate weights should be plotted appropriately.   • Yet another URL prefix regex question (to be used in C#).

    Hi, I have seen many regular expressions for Url validation. In my case I want the Url to be simpler, so the regex should be tighter: Valid Url prefixes look like: http[s]://[www.]addressOrIp[.something]/PageName.aspx[?] This describe a prefix. I will be appending ?x=a&y=b&z=c later. I just want to check if the web page is live before accessing it, but even before that I want to make sure that it is properly configured. I want to treat bad url and host is down conditions differently, although when in doubt, I'd rather give a host is down message, because that is an ultimate test anyway. Hopefully that makes sense. I guess what I am trying to say - the regex does not need be too aggressive, I just want it to cover say 95% of the cases. This is C# - centric, so Perl regex extensions are not helpful to me; let's stick to the lowest common denominator. Thanks!

I passed my coding classes with lower bound grades so that i haven't a good background in coding&programming. I'm trying to write a code that generates prime numbers between given upper and lower bounds. Not knowing C well, enforce me to write a rough code then go over it to solve. I can easily set up the logic for intended function but i probably create a wrong algorithm through several different ways.
