• How to reduce a data frame keeping the order for other columns

  I am trying to reduce a data frame using the max function on a given column. I would like to preserve other columns but keeping the values from the same rows where each maximum value was selected. An example will make this explanation easier. Let us assume we have the following data frame: dframe <- data.frame(list(BENCH=sort(rep(letters[1:4], 4)), CFG=rep(1:4, 4), VALUE=runif(4 * 4) )) This gives me: BENCH CFG VALUE 1 a 1 0.98828096 2 a 2 0.19630597 3 a 3 0.83539540 4 a 4 0.90988296 5 b 1 0.01191147 6 b 2 0.35164194 7 b 3 0.55094787 8 b 4 0.20744004 9 c 1 0.49864470 10 c 2 0.77845408 11 c 3 0.25278871 12 c 4 0.23440847 13 d 1 0.29795494 14 d 2 0.91766057 15 d 3 0.68044728 16 d 4 0.18448748 Now, I want to reduce the data in order to select the maximum VALUE for each different BENCH: aggregate(VALUE ~ BENCH, dframe, FUN=max) This gives me the expected result: BENCH VALUE 1 a 0.9882810 2 b 0.5509479 3 c 0.7784541 4 d 0.9176606 Next, I tried to preserve other columns: aggregate(cbind(VALUE, CFG) ~ BENCH, dframe, FUN=max) This reduction returns: BENCH VALUE CFG 1 a 0.9882810 4 2 b 0.5509479 4 3 c 0.7784541 4 4 d 0.9176606 4 Both VALUE and CFG are reduced using max function. But this is not what I want. For instance, in this example I would like to obtain: BENCH VALUE CFG 1 a 0.9882810 1 2 b 0.5509479 3 3 c 0.7784541 2 4 d 0.9176606 2 where CFG is not reduced, but it just keeps the value associated to the maximum VALUE for each different BENCH. How could I change my reduction in order to obtain the last result shown?

• Looking for a book which teaches how to write applications (as opposed to writng code)

  I am not a developer. I have coded for fun and for university projects in several languages, and during an internship, I have written code which is still in use by a department of Fortune Global 500 company. I also have extensive theoretical knowledge of software engineering - process models, architecture, project management, UI construction using Lauesen's virtual windows... you get the picture. But I am not involved with software development in my job. I recently decided to start coding for fun again, and now I have some free days to do it. But this time, I want to do it right. I want to write a real, useful application, install it on my devices and use it myself. Also I want to publish it for others to use, should they want to do so. I am vaguely aware that there is more to writing an application than to writing code. There is stuff like version control software, decision for the right IDE, having a suite of unit tests, producing an installation package - and probably lots of other things I never thought of but which must be taken care of in a proper application, as opposed to a bunch of classes I am running from my IDE. All this is stuff I should know before I start, but I have not learned it. Coding books touch on some of the subjects like IDE choice, but don't go into detail, and are not exhaustive. Theoretical software engineering textbooks are even less helpful. So is there a book which teaches exactly that? I know that I can find information on each of these topics on the Internet, but I'd rather have a systematic book exhaustively listing all the things I should take care of if I want to create a good application, and offering the currently accepted solutions for them. In the best case, it will be language- and platform independent, but if you know of a good book focusing on a specific platform, I would like to know about it too. I know I want a lot, but given how important such knowledge is and how many people need it, surely somebody must have written such a book?

• Creating a dynamic proxy generator – Part 1 – Creating the Assembly builder, Module builder and cach

  I’ve recently started a project with a few mates to learn the ins and outs of Dependency Injection, AOP and a number of other pretty crucial patterns of development as we’ve all been using these patterns for a while but have relied totally on third part solutions to do the magic. We thought it would be interesting to really get into the details by rolling our own IoC container and hopefully learn a lot on the way, and you never know, we might even create an excellent framework. The open source project is called Rapid IoC and is hosted at http://rapidioc.codeplex.com/ One of the most interesting tasks for me is creating the dynamic proxy generator for enabling Aspect Orientated Programming (AOP). In this series of articles, I’m going to track each step I take for creating the dynamic proxy generator and I’ll try my best to explain what everything means - mainly as I’ll be using Reflection.Emit to emit a fair amount of intermediate language code (IL) to create the proxy types at runtime which can be a little taxing to read. It’s worth noting that building the proxy is without a doubt going to be slightly painful so I imagine there will be plenty of areas I’ll need to change along the way. Anyway lets get started…   Part 1 - Creating the Assembly builder, Module builder and caching mechanism Part 1 is going to be a really nice simple start, I’m just going to start by creating the assembly, module and type caches. The reason we need to create caches for the assembly, module and types is simply to save the overhead of recreating proxy types that have already been generated, this will be one of the important steps to ensure that the framework is fast… kind of important as we’re calling the IoC container ‘Rapid’ – will be a little bit embarrassing if we manage to create the slowest framework. The Assembly builder The assembly builder is what is used to create an assembly at runtime, we’re going to have two overloads, one will be for the actual use of the proxy generator, the other will be mainly for testing purposes as it will also save the assembly so we can use Reflector to examine the code that has been created. An AssemblyBuilder is then constructed with the current AppDomain and depending on the overload used, it is either just run in the current context or it is set up ready for saving. It is then added to the DynamicModuleCache. I’ve spent a fair amount of time thinking about the type of collection I should use to store the types and have finally decided that for the time being I’m going to use a generic dictionary. This may change when I can actually performance test the proxy generator but the time being I think it makes good sense in theory, mainly as it pretty much maintains it’s performance with varying numbers of items – almost constant (0)1. Plus I won’t ever need to loop through the items which is not the dictionaries strong point. Hopefully they should be clear enough, the Get is a TryGet as I do not want the dictionary to throw an exception if a proxy doesn’t exist within the cache. Other than that I’ve decided to create a key using the SHA1CryptoServiceProvider, this may change but my initial though is the SHA1 algorithm is pretty fast to put together using the provider and it is also very unlikely to have any hashing collisions. (there are some maths behind how unlikely this is – here’s the wiki if you’re interested http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SHA_hash_functions)   Anyway, that’s the end of part 1 – although I haven’t started any of the fun stuff (by fun I mean hairpulling, teeth grating Relfection.Emit style fun), I’ve got the basis of the DynamicProxy in place so all we have to worry about now is creating the types, interceptor classes, method invocation information classes and finally a really nice fluent interface that will abstract all of the hard-core craziness away and leave us with a lightning fast, easy to use AOP framework. • OpenSolaris Dead / Alive?

  Hi all, I have used Open Solaris in the past and really liked it, minus the lack of support for a few applications I use such as UFraw, Hugin, and wacom. I can compile from source, but where is the fun in that. It seems the release dates for the next Open Solaris keep getting pushed back and the release that was scheduled to happen quietly got pulled from their site. So, they're no longer saying development for 10.03 has already begun because it has come and gone and there is no release. Walter

• Webmin Cluster Copy Protocol

  Just toying with a clustered server farm for fun (as you do) and experimenting with Webmin and its 'clustered' modules. It has a feature that can copy files from one server to another on a repeating basis. Does this feature/module use cron jobs and what protocol does it use to copy the files? I have searched all about the net and yet I cannot find any decent documentation on webmin or its features. Is it just poorly documented or am I missing something?

• Running Visual Studio on OS X

  So, my windows laptop is on its last legs and I'm thinking of shelling out for a Macbook Pro. However, I do some (but not a lot) of ASP.NET development, and so would need to install Visual Studio of some version using something like VMWare Fusion. Has anyone had any success doing this? I know that the sensible thing to do would be to take the money that I'd spend on a MBP and get a decent laptop, but since when is sensible fun?

• DNS cache-on-demand server in Win7

  I live in a country that enjoys manipulating DNS entries for fun and profit. For various reasons, I cannot surf with a VPN running 100% of the time. Because some sites are only blocked via DNS spoofing, it would be very handy if I could run a local DNS server that I could update on command during active VPN sessions.   It doesn't matter whether you just use it for fun or run your multi-million euro business with it. Also, if you install it on your work PC at some large company, this is still personal use. However, if you are an administrator and want to deploy it to the 500 desktops in your company, this would no longer qualify as personal use. • Windows 8: Different Themes or Different Wallpaper Slideshows for Multiple Monitors

  I know I can assign different wallpaper for each monitor that is connected to my computer in Windows 8(by right clicking and selecting "set for monitor 1,2,etc"), but I don't know how to assign different wallpaper slideshow or different theme for each monitor. Can anyone tell me how to do that? It is quite interesting to see different wallpapers on different monitors, but seeing static wallpaper on each of those monitors is no fun. thanks

• How can I change how OS X's 'say' command pronounces a word?

  OS X's say command is useful for some tasks (such as Skype's 'notify me when a contact comes online), but it is pronouncing some names incorrectly. Is there a way to teach say to pronounce a word differently? For example, try: say "Hi, Joel Spolsky" The 'ol' sounds like 'ball' rather than 'old'. I'd like to add an exception that say "Pronounce Spolsky like this", rather than try to teach new linguistic rules. I bet there is a way since it can pronounce "iphone" as Apple wants. Update - After some research, here's what I've learned: Text-to-speech is split between turning the text to phonemes, and then the phonemes are turned into audio using a voice. Changing the voice doesn't effect the phonemes. The Speech Synthesis Manager has some functions for turning text to phonemes, and a method for registering a speech dictionary that will add new text-phoneme maps. However, Apple's speech dictionary must be in a binary form - I didn't find any plist XML. Using dtrace while running say, I found some interesting files opened in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SpeechDictionary.framework/Resources. This is probably the speech dictionary, but they are all binary, except for Homophones, which is XML. Adding entries to Homophones does nothing - it is probably used in speech-to-text. They are also code signed by Apple - changing them may prevent some programs from working. PrefixDictionary CartNames CartLite SymbolDictionary Homophones There are ways to add text versions of application interface elements so VoiceOver works, a lot of which a developer gets for free, but there are tricky bits. The standard here appears to be to use a phonetic spelling as needed. My guesses are: say is a light layer of code on top of the Speech Synthesis Manager. It would be easy for the Apple devs to add a command line option to take the path to a speech dictionary plist for alternate phoneme mapping, but they didn't. It may be a useful open-source project to write a better say. Skype probably uses Speech Synthesis Manager directly, leaving no hooks to change the way my friend's names are pronounced, other than spelling them phonetically, which is silly. The easiest way to make a command line version of say is how JRobert suggested. • I just don't know what it is, tried everything, IE 7 bug

  Has anyone seen this bug? I have a sidebar with a ul nav background image for the hover state, floated right, looks great in all browsers. Then...I added another div underneath it for ad space. inside, there's an anchored image. That image tucks underneath the background image of the nav, but only in IE7 (i abandoned trying to please ie6). So I took it out of the sidebar, played with float, display,height hacks, but nothing works I can declare a large top margin with some more top padding do get it to clear but it breaks the design. i even tried creating a div called clear and put a top margin there. so it displays with this huge gap in chrome, FF, safari but this tiny space between in IE. i even tried creating a div called clear and put a top margin there.
