  • How to terminate a particular Azure worker role instance

    Background I am trying to work out the best structure for an Azure application. Each of my worker roles will spin up multiple long-running jobs. Over time I can transfer jobs from one instance to another by switching them to a readonly mode on the source instance, spinning them up on the target instance, and then spinning the original down on the source instance. If I have too many jobs then I can tell Azure to spin up extra role instance, and use them for new jobs. Conversely if my load drops (e.g. during the night) then I can consolidate outstanding jobs to a few machines and tell Azure to give me fewer instances. The trouble is that (as I understand it) Azure provides no mechanism to allow me to decide which instance to stop. Thus I cannot know which servers to consolidate onto, and some of my jobs will die when their instance stops, causing delays for users while I restart those jobs on surviving instances. Idea 1: I decide which instance to stop, and return from its Run(). I then tell Azure to reduce my instance count by one, and hope it concludes that the broken instance is a good candidate. Has anyone tried anything like this? Idea 2: I predefine a whole bunch of different worker roles, with identical contents. I can individually stop and start them by switching their instance count from zero to one, and back again. I think this idea would work, but I don't like it because it seems to go against the natural Azure way of doing things, and because it involves me in a lot of extra bookkeeping to manage the extra worker roles. Idea 3: Live with it. Any better ideas?

  • Why doesn't my UIViewController class keep track of an NSArray instance variable.

    Hey, I am new to Objective-C 2.0 and Xcode, so forgive me if I am missing something elementary here. Anyways, I am trying to make my own UIViewController class called GameView to display a new view. To work the game I need to keep track of an NSArray that I want to load from a plist file. I have made a method 'loadGame' which I want to load the correct NSArray into an instance variable. However it appears that after the method executes the instance variable loses track of the array.   • How to escape or remove double quotes in rsyslog template

    I want rsyslog to write log messages in JSON format, which requires to use double-quotes (") around strings. Problem is that values sometime include double-quotes themselves, and those need to be escaped - but I can't figure out how to do that. Currently my rsyslog.conf contains this format that I use (a bit simplified): $template JsonFormat,"{\"msg\":\"%msg%\",\"app-name\":\"%app-name%\"}\n",sql But when a msg arrives that contains double quotes, the JSON is broken, example: user pid=21214 uid=0 auid=4294967295 msg='PAM setcred: user="oracle" exe="/bin/su" (hostname=?, addr=?, terminal=? result=Success)' turns into: {"msg":"user pid=21214 uid=0 auid=4294967295 msg='PAM setcred: user="oracle" exe="/bin/su" (hostname=?, addr=?, terminal=? result=Success)'","app-name":"user"} but what I need it to become is: {"msg":"user pid=21214 uid=0 auid=4294967295 msg='PAM setcred: user=\"oracle\" exe=\"/bin/su\" (hostname=?, addr=?, terminal=? result=Success)'","app-name":"user"}

  • Iphone: UIWebview and double taps

    I would like to trap a double tap event in a UIWebView. I have derived a class from UIWebController. When I double tap it seams that the UIWebController itself is responding to my double taps instead of my class. The weird thing is that when I change the inheritance to inherit from UIView everything works just fine. Below are snippets from my code which is supposed to invoke a pop-up when double tapped.   • Spring MVC defaultValue for Double

    Hi All, I'm trying to build a controller like this: @RequestMapping(method = {RequestMethod.GET}, value = "/users/detail/activities.do") public View foo(@RequestParam(value = "userCash", defaultValue="0.0") Double userCash) { System.out.println("foo userCash=" + userCash); } This works fine: http://localhost/app/users/detail/activities.do?userCash=123& but in this one userCash==null despite the default value http://localhost/app/users/detail/activities.do?userCash=& From some digging it seems like the first one works b/c of a Editor binding like this: binder.registerCustomEditor(Double.class, new CustomNumberEditor(Double.class, false)); The trouble is that the second param (ie false) defines whether blank values are allowed. If i set that to true, than the system considers the blank input as valid so i get a null Double class. If i set it to false then the system chokes on the blank input string with: org.springframework.beans.TypeMismatchException: Failed to convert value of type 'java.lang.String' to required type 'double'; nested exception is java.lang.NumberFormatException: empty String Does anyone know how to get the defaultValue to work for Doubles?   • Explanation of casting/conversion int/double in C#

    I coded some calculation stuff (I copied below a really simplifed example of what I did) like CASE2 and got bad results. Refactored the code like CASE1 and worked fine. I know there is an implicit cast in CASE 2, but not sure of the full reason. Any one could explain me what´s exactly happening below? //CASE 1, result 5.5 double auxMedia = (5 + 6); auxMedia = auxMedia / 2; //CASE 2, result 5.0 double auxMedia1 = (5 + 6) / 2; //CASE 3, result 5.5 double auxMedia3 = (5.0 + 6.0) / 2.0; //CASE 4, result 5.5 double auxMedia4 = (5 + 6) / 2.0; My guess is that /2 in CASE2 is casting (5 + 6) to int and causing round of division to 5, then casted again to double and converted to 5.0. CASE3 and CASE 4 also fixes the problem.

  • Attachments in Oracle BPM 11g – Create a BPM Process Instance by passing an Attachment

    Problem Statement: On a recent engagement I had  a requirement where we needed to create BPM instances using a message start event. The challenge was that the instance needed to be created after polling a file location and attaching the picked up file (pdf) as an attachment to the instance. Proposed Solution: I was contemplating using process API to accomplish this,but came up with a solution which involves a BPEL process to pickup the file and send a notification to the BPM process by passing the attachment as a payload. The following are some of the brief steps that were used to build the solution: BPM Process to receive an attachment as part of the payload: The BPM Process is a very simple process which has a Message Start event that accepts the attachment as an argument and a Simple User Task that the user can use to view the attachment (as part of the OOTB attachment panel). The Input payload is based on AttachmentPayload.xsd.  The 3 key elements of the the payload are: <xsd:element name="filename" type="xsd:string"/> <xsd:element name="mimetype" type="xsd:string"/> <xsd:element name="content" type="xsd:base64Binary"/> A screenshot of the Human task data assignment that need to performed to attach the file is provided here. Once the process and the UI project (default generated UI) are deployed to the SOA server, copy the wsdl location of the process service (from EM). This WSDL would be used in the BPEL project to create the Instances in the BPM process after a file is polled. BPEL Process to Poll for File and create instances in the BPM process: For the BPEL process a File adapter was configured as a Read service (File Streaming option and keeping the Schema as Opaque). Once a location and the file pattern to poll are provided the Readservice Partner Link was wired to Invoke the BPEL Process. Also, using the BPM Process WSDL, we can create the Webservice reference and can invoke the start operation. Before we do the assignment for the Invoke operation, a global variable should be created to hold the value of the fileName of the file. The mapping to the global variable can be done on the Receive activity properties (jca.file.FileName).  So for the assign operation before we invoke the BPM process service, we can get the content of the file from the receive input variable and the fileName from the jca.file.FileName property. The mimetype needs to be hard coded to the mime-type of the file: application/pdf (I am still researching ways to derive the mime type as it is not available as part of the jca.file properties).  The screenshot of the BPEL process can be found here and the Assign activity can be found here.   • NullPointerException, Collections not storing data?

    Hi there, I posted this question earlier but not with the code in its entirety. The coe below also calls to other classes Background and Hydro which I have included at the bottom. I have a Nullpointerexception at the line indicate by asterisks. Which would suggest to me that the Collections are not storing data properly. Although when I check their size they seem correct.   • Double-tap or two single-taps?

    What is the time limit for two taps to be considered a double-tap, on the iPhone OS? // Edit: Why is this important? In order to handle single-tap and double-tap differently, Apple's guide says to do performSelector...afterDelay with some 'reasonable' interval on first tap (and cancel it later if the second tap is detected). The problem is that if the interval is too short (0.1), the single tap action will be performed even when double-tapping (if relying only on tapCount, that is). If it's too long (0.8), the user will be waiting unnecessarily for the single-tap to be recognized, when there is no possibility for a double-tap. It has to be exactly the correct number, in order to work optimally, but definitely not smaller, or there's a chance for bugs (simultaneous single-tap and double-tap).

    Is this the proper way to use a static const variable? In my top level class (Shape) #ifndef SHAPE_H #define SHAPE_H class Shape { public: static const double pi; private: double originX; double originY; }; const double Shape::pi = 3.14159265; #endif And then later in a class that extends Shape, I use Shape::pi. I get a linker error. I moved the const double Shape::pi = 3.14... to the Shape.cpp file and my program then compiles. Why does that happen? thanks.

    I am not able to connect to my m1.small instance after rebooting it. I have already associated the public IP with this instance.   • Double sides face with two normals

    I think this isn't possible, but I just want to check this: Is it possible to create a face in opengl that has two normals? So: I want the inside and outside of some cilinder to be drawn, but I want the lights to do as expected and not calculate it for the normal given. I was trying to do this with backface culling off, so I would have both faces, but the light was wrongly calculated of course. Is this possible, or do I have to draw an inside and an outside? So draw twice?

  • Desktop switcher appears to be broken for quick double-switches

    I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this. I have three virtual desktops aligned in a horizontal row. In the middle desktop I have only a single application window. I have keyboard shortcuts mapping to navigate between the desktops. Obviously, I never use the up/down arrows because I only have one row of workspaces. Here's the problem, which only started to happen after I installed 12.04.1: When I rapidly hit to go from workspace 1 to workspace 3, the window on workspace 2 gets moved to workspace 1. I have checked using both Unity and Gnome3, and the behavior is the same under both. If I change back to the default workspace setup (a 2x2 grid of desktops) things seem to settle down (i.e., no wandering windows). Not every type of application window behaves the same way. I couldn't get a Chrome browser to jump from 2 to 1, but both Terminal and Terminator exhibit the behavior. Any thoughts? Better workarounds? Thanks in advance.

  • Screensaver + lock double login problem after Maverick upgrade

    Just found something strange after updating from 10.04 to 10.10. I've set up my screensaver to lock the account when activated. When I log back in, I see my desktop for a second and then the screensaver starts again and I have to re-login. I checked my process list in gnome system monitor, and I have two gnome-screensaver processes(!?), one started as /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver and other simply as gnome-screensaver. And no, I did not start one manually. Where do I look for a way to switch off one of those (supposing that's the problem)? I did not find anything in my startup applications.

    I'm not much of a techie but my friend who is a software engineer suggested I download ubuntu after my Windows computer was not connecting to certain Wi-Fi networks ( including the one at my house). He said it may be because of the drivers. I did download ubuntu but now the home screen is totally off center.Any ideas? Step by step instructions would be awesome since I'm not super great at this!   • Double entries in the gnome 3 task bar

    I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome 3. All was working well except that graphics were slow and even moving a window on the screen seemed slow. I installed the fglrx ati driver. Which seems to have improved matters. But on first login I had all gnome items duplicated. That is my task bar has the ubuntu sign, then says Applications, then places then the ubuntu sign then Aplications and then places. Any application I run produces two icons at the bottom of the screen. This was after a reboot. I rebooted again. Now I have 3!! On the right each set of icons such as printer is also trippled!! I am going to be task barred out before long!!
