• Can't boot after recent system update

  Dear all, After recent system update (I think I saw something kernelish but don't really remember) my Ubuntu becomes unbootable. When I select "Ubuntu" from the boot menu, I'm greeted by a GRUB console and I don't know what to do (typing help shows some helpful commands for gods, unfortunately I'm a mere mortal). • Modules loading despite being added to the blacklist

  I'd like to blacklist a couple of modules, namely drm, drm_kms_helper, i2c_algo_bit and i915 to forbid my integrated Intel GPU to be used, but to use my Nvidia MXM card instead. I inserted the following lines into /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf: blacklist i915 blacklist drm blacklist drm_kms_helper blacklist i2c_algo_bit Despite the above right after rebooting my laptop and typing lsmod I can see these modules loaded. Why does my blacklist get utterly disrespected and what can I do about it?

• Subterranean IL: Constructor constraints

  The constructor generic constraint is a slightly wierd one. The ECMA specification simply states that it: constrains [the type] to being a concrete reference type (i.e., not abstract) that has a public constructor taking no arguments (the default constructor), or to being a value type. There seems to be no reference within the spec to how you actually create an instance of a generic type with such a constraint. In non-generic methods, the normal way of creating an instance of a class is quite different to initializing an instance of a value type. For a reference type, you use newobj: newobj instance void IncrementableClass::.ctor() and for value types, you need to use initobj: .locals init ( valuetype IncrementableStruct s1 ) ldloca 0 initobj IncrementableStruct But, for a generic method, we need a consistent method that would work equally well for reference or value types. Activator.CreateInstance<T> To solve this problem the CLR designers could have chosen to create something similar to the constrained. prefix; if T is a value type, call initobj, and if it is a reference type, call newobj instance void !!0::.ctor(). However, this solution is much more heavyweight than constrained callvirt. The newobj call is encoded in the assembly using a simple reference to a row in a metadata table. This encoding is no longer valid for a call to !!0::.ctor(), as different constructor methods occupy different rows in the metadata tables. Furthermore, constructors aren't virtual, so we would have to somehow do a dynamic lookup to the correct method at runtime without using a MethodTable, something which is completely new to the CLR. Trying to do this in IL results in the following verification error: newobj instance void !!0::.ctor() [IL]: Error: Unable to resolve token. This is where Activator.CreateInstance<T> comes in. We can call this method to return us a new T, and make the whole issue Somebody Else's Problem. CreateInstance does all the dynamic method lookup for us, and returns us a new instance of the correct reference or value type (strangely enough, Activator.CreateInstance<T> does not itself have a .ctor constraint on its generic parameter): .method private static !!0 CreateInstance<.ctor T>() { call !!0 [mscorlib]System.Activator::CreateInstance<!!0>() ret } Going further: compiler enhancements Although this method works perfectly well for solving the problem, the C# compiler goes one step further. Looking closer, it's actually quite a clever performance optimization around value types. So, lets dissect this code to see what it does. The CreateValueType and CreateInstance sections should be fairly self-explanatory; using initobj for value types, and Activator.CreateInstance for reference types. How does the DetectValueType section work? First, the stack transition for value types: ldloca.s 0 // &[!!T(uninitialized)] initobj !!T // ldloc.0 // !!T box !!T // O[!!T] brfalse.s // branch not taken When the brfalse.s is hit, the top stack entry is a non-null reference to a boxed !!T, so execution continues to to the CreateValueType section. What about when !!T is a reference type? Remember, the 'default' value of an object reference (type O) is zero, or null. ldloca.s 0 // &[!!T(null)] initobj !!T // ldloc.0 // null box !!T // null brfalse.s // branch taken Because box on a reference type is a no-op, the top of the stack at the brfalse.s is null, and so the branch to CreateInstance is taken. For reference types, Activator.CreateInstance is called which does the full dynamic lookup using reflection. For value types, a simple initobj is called, which is far faster, and also eliminates the unboxing that Activator.CreateInstance has to perform for value types. However, this is strictly a performance optimization; Activator.CreateInstance<T> works for value types as well as reference types. Next... That concludes the initial premise of the Subterranean IL series; to cover the details of generic methods and generic code in IL. I've got a few other ideas about where to go next; however, if anyone has any itching questions, suggestions, or things you've always wondered about IL, do let me know.

  So, I finally gave up on all my previous the Microsoft Mobile/Phone OS devices and made my switch to Android this year. I am using my Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 with CyanogenMod 9.1.0 (http://get.cm/get/jenkins/7086/cm-9.1.0-n7000.zip) and ClockworkMod 6.0.1.2 (http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.2-n7000.zip) since August this year and I am so happy with the performance and the flexibility it offers me. As a software developer by profession, I would expect most of my gadget to be highly customizable and programmable (one time or at intervals) to suit my needs as close as it can. I was introduced to Automation for Android – Tasker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm&hl=en) via reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/tasker) and the word ‘automation’ was enough for me to dive right into this app. Only automation that I did earlier was switching profiles depending on location on there phones. And now, just imagine a complete set of possibilities that can be automate on the phone or via the phone. I did my research and found a couple of other tools that do the same/as close as what Tasker can do and few of them are even free. There’s one even by Microsoft called on{X} (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.onx.app&hl=en). Microsoft’s on{X} really caught my eye. You can write code for your phone on the web application by them, deploy it on your phone and even trace the flow all using your PC. Really brilliant, I love the fact that it’s all JavaScript. Here comes the but, it is still very very young and it’s policy of accessing my News Feed on Facebook is not something that I can not digest. On{X} is good, but as I said earlier, the API is not very mature and hence, I gave up on it. I bought Tasker, the best 5,00 € I spent in ages and I want to talk about it in this post. I am still a “noob” while operating this tool, but I tried my shot at automating WhatsApp (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.whatsapp&hl=en), a popular messenger for various platform. The requirement for the automation is that, if I send a WhatsApp ‘wru’ message to the phone, it should respond back giving the location and battery level of my phone. It could be useful, if you like to locate your misplaced phone or automatically reply to your partner/friend, honestly, I don’t know what you will use it - through this post, I am just introducing automating WhatsApp using Tasker. Before we begin, the following script only works when your phone is rooted as we will be accessing the WhatsApp database and type some special characters like ‘:’. • Root username is different to admin username

  I have somehow changed my root username which seems to have caused my system to disallow me to mount USB, CDROM. My normal username is jenchris, however if I type: su root (and enter the password) then it shows root@jenchris-H55M-UD2H:/home/jenchris# (PLEASE NOTE THE HASH AT THE END OF THE USERNAME!) I think I accidentally hit the hash key at some point whilst typing my username.... This is causing huge problems as I have lost lots of permissions, please can someone help?

• Emacs keybindings for texboxes in firefox?

  I'm so used to emacs that sometimes, when I'm typing something in a textbox in firefox, I sometimes try and do C-p to move up a line. It is seriously annoying to have to cancel a print dialog box every time I try and move about my text. If it's not horrendously complicated, I'd like to have keybindings that emulate emacs inside textboxes in firefox... Obviously, I wouldn't need all the keybindings, but movement, marking, killing and yanking would be useful. Is this an insane request?

• Master Page: Dynamically Adding Rows in ASP Table on Button Click event

  In my previous post here, I wrote an example that demonstrates how are we going to generate table rows dynamically using ASP Table on click of the Button control. Now based on some comments in my previous example and in the forums they wanted to implement it within Masterpage. Unfortunately the code in my previous example doesn't work in Masterpage for the following main reasons: The Table is dynamically added within the Form tag and so the TextBox control will not be generated correcty in the page. The data will not be retained on each and every postbacks because the SetPreviousData() method is looking for the Table element within the Page and not on the MasterPage. The Request.Form key value should be set correctly since all controls within the master page are prefixed with the naming containter ID to prevent duplicate ids on the final rendered HTML. For example the TextBox control with the ID of TextBoxRow will turn to ID to this ctl00$MainBody$TextBoxRow. In order for the previous example to work within Masterpage then we will have to correct those three main reasons above and this post will guide you how to correct it. • VPN says "successfully connected" and I'm internet-connected, but I can't access network resources

  To explain, I'm a university student who uses the VPN to access sites like Nature, PhysicsToday, etc. I have this VPN working on Windows 7 and I've got access to nearly every journal. However on my Ubuntu 12.04 partition I'm able to connect to the internet (in fact I'm typing this while connected through the VPN presumably) but journals have locked me out. Is there a problem on my end that I can fix?

• Using RTL languages with MS Office in Wine 1.4

  I've installed MS Office 2007 in Ubuntu 12.04 using Wine 1.4 with no problems, and it works fine with the English Language. However, I need to use it to work with Arabic and Hebrew, and it doesn't work when I switch to a Hebrew or Arabic keyboard. The typing gets reversed. I saw an earlier post for something similar, but it is closed and I think it was for the earlier Wine 1.3. Supposedly Wine 1.4 has added RTL -- is there a way to get it working?

• How to Add a Taskbar to the Desktop in Ubuntu 14.04

  If you’ve switched to Ubuntu from Windows, it may take some time to get used to the new and different interface. However, you can easily incorporate a familiar Windows feature, the Taskbar, into Ubuntu to make the transition easier. A tool called Tint2 provides a bar at the bottom of the Ubuntu Desktop that resembles the Windows Taskbar. We will show you how to install it and make it start every time you log into Ubuntu. NOTE: When we say to type something in this article and there are quotes around the text, DO NOT type the quotes, unless we specify otherwise. Press Ctrl + Alt + T to open a Terminal window. To install Tint2, type the following line at the prompt and press Enter. sudo apt-get install tint2 Type your password at the prompt and press Enter. The progress of the installation displays and then a message displays saying how much disk space will be used. When asked if you want to continue, type a “y” and press Enter. When the installation has finished, close the Terminal window by typing “exit” at the prompt and pressing Enter. Click the Search button at the top of the Unity bar. Start typing “startup applications” in the Search box. Items that match what you type start displaying below the Search box. When the Startup Applications tool displays, click the icon to open it. On the Startup Applications Preferences window, click Add. On the Add Startup Program dialog box, enter a name for the startup application. This name displays in the list on the Startup Applications Preferences window. Type “tint2” in the Command edit box, enter a description in the Comment edit box, if desired, and click Add. Tint2 is added as a startup program and will start every time you log into Ubuntu. Click Close to close the Startup Applications Preferences window. Log out and log back in to make the Taskbar available on the desktop. You do not need to reboot the computer for this change to take effect. Now, when you minimize a program, an icon for it displays on the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen, just like the Taskbar in Windows. If you decide that you don’t want the Taskbar to display every time you log into Ubuntu, you can uncheck the Tint2 startup program on the Startup Applications Preferences window. You don’t need to delete it from the list.

  i am using ubuntu 11.10 in GNOME interface and there is no shutdown bar/option appearing on desktop . I have also used some solutions just like: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gnome3 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions-alternative-status-menu but this is showing some error message in the terminal while typing last command. Please provided me with best solutions

• Music player with 'searchable' media library ?

  I have been looking quite few days for that but I have not found an answer. I am trying to find a good music player for ubuntu in which I would be able to search the media library like in winamp ( typing te band's or song's name in a search field ). I have tried this with Banshee but it lags a lot when I change the 'selected' album in library I cannot find the search field/option in there Any suggestions/solutions ?

• Starting problem fresh installed 12.10

  I have downloaded ubuntu 12.10 image recently,and burned it to disc to install on my laptop everything worked fine until now,when i started it first time it got stuck on loading (Ubuntu title and dots below) i tried restarting and it got through,but new problem appeared After typing my password and logging in,it just freezes there with background and mouse pointer only visible.i can start terminal with ctrl alt f4 but thats all then after few mins,error comes up saying that application compiz has closed unexpectedly.whatever i click (relaunch or leave closed) it just stays frozen with background only.

• Grep, no value return

  I am searching for a word, in this case "hehe" that is located in the file findTest by using grep, but when i initiate the search: grep -r "hehe" or grep -lr "hehe" it starts but after 5 min waiting nothing happens, even if i am in the same directory as the file. the only way i get a results straight away is being in the same directory and typing: grep "hehe" findTest Are their any other ways to search for a word? even if not in the same directory.

• How do you approach tutorials

  I get lots of interesting tutorials through feeds and sometimes I implement them step by step, other times I just read through them and note anything that I do not know. When ever I implement them I takes a long time - starting the project, typing the code (as I feel there is no point to copy and paste ), then going back and forth between browser and editing program All in all, I am interested to know how do you learn from the tutorials (I'm no where close to being an expert). Or if you don't use tutorials, is there any other way to learn?

• alias/function with command line arguments

  I'm tired of typing manage.py startserver 10.211.55.4:4000, so decided to make an alias for that. Only thing is: the port sometime changes. So I did this in bash profile: function runserver() { python manage.py runserver 10.211.55.4:$1 } But then when I call it: runserver 3000, it starts it, but immediately stops saying: "Error: That IP address can't be assigned-to". However if I type the same thing right into command line it works with no complains.
