  • Why is there a delay for logging in (wubi)?

    I use wubi to install Ubuntu under win7 in partition F which is fat32. When I choose Ubuntu at boot time, it jumps into a window. It shows two choices: ubuntu ubuntu recovery After choosing Ubuntu, it shows: error: file not found error: you need to load kernel first press any key to continue. It goes back to the choice window after I press a key. Again I choose Ubuntu, and it goes black and then it comes to the login window. After I log in it works. My question is: Is what happens before the login window normal or not (when using wubi)?

  • How can I have sound output before logging in?

    I have a machine (Ubuntu 11.10) that I would like to have it play audio (typically through an amplifier), but the machine should be headless (where its final placement will be). I will control what is played through ssh. However, there is no sound output until I login to the graphical console. At first I thought it was an issue with pulseaudio, so I promptly removed it to use the default ALSA, but I have the same issues. I ssh to the machine, I run alsamixer and get the typical cannot open mixer: No such file or directory error (while /proc/asound/cards display correctly what I have). If I login on the graphical console, alsamixer works fine in the ssh session, and I have sound output. I logout, and then alsamixer stops working. So something runs (Xsession perhaps?) when I login that enables sound output, and gets disabled when I logout. I remember in older versions of Ubuntu, there was a drum roll when the machine showed the login screen; that is not the case anymore. Perhaps if I somehow can enable that drum roll, I'll have fixed my problem too. In any case, the question I ask is what the title says.

    this is my first question I've posted. I've used this site to look at other questions to help with similar problems I've had. After some cursory looking I couldn't find quite the answer I was looking for so I decided to finally succumb and create an account. I am fairly new to java, only a few weeks into my first class. Anyway, my project is to create a program which takes any amount of students and their grades, and then assign them a letter grade. The catch is, however, that it is on a sort of curve and the other grades' letter are dependent on the the highest. Anything equal to or 10 points below the best grade is an a, anything 11-20 points below is a b, and so on. I am to use an array, but I get this error when ran "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException." I will go ahead and post my code down below.   • How do I restore logging in with an X session graphics instaed of text-only session?

    I was able to set up a text UI by editing the file /etc/default/grub in Ubuntu 12.04 as per the instructions in: How do I disable X at boot time so that the system boots in text mode? But, how do I revert to X-session as the default one? I don't want to log into text mode and 'start' the lightdm every time. So I tried replacing back the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash", and did update-grub too, but something unexpected happened, an unbootable system! How do I fix this?

    I'm attempting to create a new task in the Windows Task Scheduler in C#. What I've got so far is pretty much a copy and paste of http://bartdesmet.net/blogs/bart/archive/2008/02/23/calling-the-task-scheduler-in-windows-vista-and-windows-server-2008-from-managed-code.aspx Everything compiles just fine but come run time I get the following exception: Unable to cast COM object of type 'System.__ComObject' to interface type 'TaskScheduler.ITimeTrigger'. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID '{B45747E0-EBA7-4276-9F29-85C5BB300006}' failed due to the following error: No such interface supported (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004002 (E_NOINTERFACE)). I doubt that's related to my current problem, but just in case I thought I might as well mention it.

I have tried the same test with PHPUnit 3.3.2 which did not produce this problem - the test would happily end without the getLocation(). Any ideas? thanks

    Hello every body I was using the JDK very well writing the code then i use "javac" to compile it then "java" to run it But Recently when i write a code and compile it then if i try to run it this exception appears to me "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoSuchMethodError " at first i thought there is something wrong in my code , i searched in the internet for a solving for this problem but i didn't find anything may help me Then i try to run the "HelloWorld" example i made it before, it runs i copied the code and pasted it in another file and changed the name to "HelloWorld2" and compile it by "javac" and tried to run it by "java" the same exception appears i was surprised why? it is the same code then i used the "javap" which decompile the code with both i found this difference in the first one (the old one) "public static void main(java.lang.String[])"; but in the second (the new one) "public static void main(String[])"; without java.lang then i compiled the old one which works and runs by "javac" and when i try to run it, it didn't run and give me the same exception i tried with some of my old codes it run and when i compile it by "javac" it doesn't work I searched to find a solution to this problem and i found nothing

    When I re-throw a EUpdateError exception in the TDatasetProvider.OnUpdateError event, it is not recognized as EUpdateError exception in the catch block. It's only recognized as base Excption. try ... //calls the TDatasetPorvider.OnUpdateError event. myClientDataSet.ApplyUpdates(0); ... except on ex: EUpdateError do begin //never goes here //Evaluate ex.ErrorCode end; on ex: Exception do begin //always goes here //the expression (ex is EUpdateError) returns false; end; end; Hiere is the corresponding .OnUpdateError implementaion: procedure MyDataModule.MyDatasetProviderOnUpdateError(..;E: EUpdateError;...); beign //Here, the expression (E is EUpdateException) returns true; raise E; end; The exception is re-thrown, but as it seems the EUpdateError is transformed into a plain base Execption. Does anybody know, why the class type get lost? I would need that type in order to check the .ErrorCode to know what went wrong and to prepare the proper user message.

  • New install of Steam not running on new install of Ubuntu 13.10

    I tried purging steam, un-installing and reinstalling steam, deleting /home/.steam/share/steam/appcache/, deleting everything in /home/.steam/share/steam/ and nothing helped. I installed Ubuntu, then steam into it directly afterward. I installed steam from Ubuntu Software Centre, launched it, it updated 206MB, then closed. When I tried to launch it again, it momentarily flashes the checking for update dialogue, then closes every time. Then (in an unrelated event) Ubuntu said some system updates are necessary and one of them was Steam launcher. I did the update, tried to launch Steam; same story. Really need help on this, as I did a complete re-isntall of Ubuntu, then Steam again and it did not help at all.     I have a User Defined Function (UDF) written in Java to parse lines in a log file and return information back to pig, so it can do all the processing. Person person = getPerson(candidate.getLogin()); ... } @TransactionAttribute(TransactionAttributeType.REQUIRES_NEW ) private Person getPerson(String login) throws ControllerException { Person person = em2.find(Person.class, login); return person; } Those methods are annotated with REQUIRES_NEW transcaction to avoid this exception. When I was calling these method from javaFX applet, all worked as expected. Now I'm trying to call them from JAX-RS webservice (I don't see any logical difference as in both cases ejb was looked up in initial context) and I keep getting this exception. When I set up XADatasource in glassfish 2.1 connection pools, I got nullpointer exception on em2. Any ideas what to try next? Regards

    I got an exception with message "No printers are installed." while printing a report for depolyed release of our website. I use _rptDocument.PrintToPrinter(1, false, 0, 0); to print a report. I got that exception, even I've more than one printer installed on my machine. Also, I don't get that exception while development, everything while development is going fine. I used "Publish Web Site" and "Web Project Deployment" options to publish/deploy website, but I got the same result. Any suggestions?

    We have some third party code wherein they do the following 1) Create a User Transaction e.g. txn = (UserTransaction)ctx.lookup( "UserTransaction" ); txn.begin( ); 2) Do some work persisting to the database (via JPA) to a MySQL database 3) txn.commit() They have Exception blocks but NONE of them call txn.rollback. Good coding practice says they NEED to call rollback if an exception occurs but my question is If the txn is not commited, and an exception occurs what is the negative effect of them NOT calling rollback?
