  • Security when writing a PHP webservice?

    I am writing a web service in PHP for the first time and had ran into some security problems. 1) I am planning to hash passwords using md5() before I write them to the database (or to authenticate the user) but I realize that to do that, I would have to transmit the password in plaintext to the server and hash it there. Because of this I thought of md5()ing it with javascript client side and then rehashing on the server but then if javascript is disabled, then the user can't login, right? 2) I have heard that anything that when the action is readonly, you should use GET but if it modifies the database, you should use POST. Isn't post just as transparent as GET, just not in the address bar?

  • Beginner Design pattern question (Web Services involved)

    Hi all ! I am a noob to web services world. I need to develop a login validator module and expose it as a service. I want it to be service independent, i.e I should have the option of exposing it as a SOAP service or REST service in the future. What pattern should I follow ? Sorry if I am unclear in my requirements, I can clarify as per need. Thanks !! Edit : I am using Eclipse as an IDE and Jersey libraries. I am not into any framework, simply using the MVC pattern. I find a lot of difference between SOAP ann REST methods, so I want my methods to be implementation independent - i.e I should be easily able to use my method through a SOAP or REST service call as per need. What should I do for maximum flexibility ?

  • One account, multiple users, multiple shopping cart in a web application

    I received a somewhat unusual request (imo) for a transactional web site. I have to implement the possibility of having multiple shopping cart for the same user. Those really are shopping carts, not order templates. I.E: A store with several departments ordering under the same account, but with a different person placing orders for a specific department only. Having more than one user per account is not an option since it would involve 'too much' management from the stores owner and the admins. Anyone had to deal with this before? The option so far is to have names for shopping cart, and a dropdown list or something alike after login to choose the cart with some kind of 'busy flag' to lock the cart if it's in use in another session.

  • Searching for the right pattern to handle login data

    Hi all, I'm working on a controller that handles logins for a Web app. These logins will come from multiple clients but will all contain the same data. However, depending on the client, this data will be interpreted into common entities for our webapp differently. For instance, we have a user code that gets sent in, and in one case we may use the first four digits of the code, and in another case 12 digits of the code to map to a field on a User entity. Instead of handling this all in the controller and having big nasty if blocks of logic, I would like to use a pattern to handle how this information gets ingested into our application. What are your opinions?

  • is it possible to use a python scrapper in a website?

    I want to scrap a website and use that content in a website of my own. I am just wondering if that can be done with python 2.7, and if so how? If not, do I have to use JavaScript to scrap it? And do you have a good place to learn how to do that or good libraries for it. For those of you wondering, the website I am scrapping is legal, and they allow for this to be done. I have searched all over but apparently nobody tries to implement these scrappers that they write. I can write a web scrapper in python just fine. Say my scrapper scraps a name from a wikipedia page (John Doe for example), how can I use that name that I get in my website? Another update, I have found pjsrape and PhantomJS. I have only found one stack overflow post and the github examples with aren't very intuitive. If anybody has any experience or better ways to do it I would very much appreciate it

  • Java technologies for web-development.

    Hello. I'm PHP-programmer, but I'm extremely interested in learning Java. So I decided to change speciality from PHP to Java. At the moment I have an opportunity to try to make quite simple web-application (it should contain 2-3 forms, several pages with information from the database and authorization module) and also I have a chance to choose any technology I want. Besides I have about 3 months for this task. I've decided to develop site with Java technologies for the purpose of studying. I've already read a book about Java ("Java2 Complete Reference" by P.Naughton) and currently I'm reading "Thinking in Java" by B.Eckel. I clearly understand it's not enough for efficient development, but I want, at least, to try. I would be very appreciated for the advises, which framework (for example) or technology to choose (Spring, Grails etc.) and what primary aspects and technologies of Java should I pay attention to? Thank you in advance.

  • Free service that allows storing game data online?

    I have created a small game in Java and I would like to add the ability for a player to publish his highscores online. I'm willing to write the server software myself (it's easy these days with Ruby Mongrel, or even C++). All I just need to have some sort hosting. One solution that immediately comes to mind is Amazon EC2. But that's kind of expensive for my needs. Since the requirements are very minimal (I don't even need a website, just a web service) I think there may be a cheaper solution out there. Does anyone know of a free or cheap provider for this kind of thing?

    I'm sure I've done this in another solution, but I can't seem to find any solution as to do it again and wondered if anyone can help me... This is my WebAPI code: public class WebController : ApiController { public void Get(string telephone, string postcode, List<Client> clients) { } } And, calling this from jQuery: function Client(name, age) { this.Name = name; this.Age = age; } var Clients = []; Clients.push(new Client("Chris", 27)); $.ajax({ url: "/api/Web/", data: { telephone: "999", postcode: "xxx xxx", clients: Clients } }); But the "clients" object always comes back as null. I've also tried JSON.stringify(Clients), and this is the same result. Can anyone see anything obvious I'm missing here?

  • Giving users a "reputation system" - Should I... ?

    Hi folks, I'm thinking of adding a reputation system to a web application, the site is already being used so I'm trying to be careful about my choices. I'm developing in Django/Python, thought this would be important. Reputation is generated in all actions that contribute to the site, similar to Stackoverflow's system. I know there are literally millions of ways of implementing this, and this is why I feel quite lost. Two alternatives I am not sure about are: Keep track of reasons why reputation was incremented Ignore reasons in order to reduce complexity of the site and overhead Would be happy with a few pointers, and directions. Would be very much appreciated!

    I want to build a site where people can create their personal websites quickly. All their websites will be hosted on my single web application (i.e. there will be only one database which contains info of all the websites). Each person will have an account where he can customize his website (template, content etc.). They can access their website from .mysite.com or mysite.com/xyz. I should be able to add different modules frequently, which will immediately reflect in all the websites created through my site. Based on the above requirements, please suggest me if there are any frameworks to use which can ease my job. Also suggest me which language to use (php or java). Which one would be better.

  • Best way to access a sqlite database file in a web service.

    First question from me on stack overflow. I have created a java web application containing a web service using netbeans (I hope a web application were the correct choice). I use the web application as is with no extra frameworks. This web service use a sqlite JDBC driver for accessing a sqlite database file. My problem is that the file path end up incorrect when I try to form the JDBC connection string. Also, the working directory is different when deploying and when running JUnit tests. I read somewhere about including the file as a resource, but examples of this were nowhere to be seen. In any case, what is the best way to open the sqlite database, both when the web service is deployed and when I test it "localy"? I don't know much about web services, I just need it to work, so please, help me with the technicalities.

I used Applet, Canvas, JFrame. What i need is the main loop and draw function that changing between different games.     I have my domain say "example.com" (java, GlassFish Web Server) Now I have 3 application.. say A,B,C. Now what I want is, if user hit a.example.com OR example.com/X then A application should get invoked. similarly for B and C. b.example.com or example.com/B, c.example.com or example.com/C. like mail.google.com news.google.com. How to configure this? I couldn't query it in Google as I didn't know how to query for this exactly. So posted here. Thankx guyz in advance.

  • Client no longer getting data from Web Service after introducing targetNamespace in XSD

    Sorry if there is way too much info in this post – there’s a load of story before I get to the actual problem. I thought I‘d include everything that might be relevant as I don’t have much clue what is wrong. I had a working web service and client (both written with VS 2008 in C#) for passing product data to an e-commerce site. The XSD started like this: <xs:schema id="Ecommerce" elementFormDefault="qualified" xmlns:mstns="http://tempuri.org/Ecommerce.xsd" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <xs:element name="eur"> <xs:complexType> <xs:sequence> <xs:element ref="sec" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1"/> </xs:sequence> etc Here’s a sample document sent from client to service: <eur xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" class="ECommerce_WebService" type="product" method="GetLastDateSent" chunk_no="1" total_chunks="1" date_stamp="2010-03-10T17:16:34.523" version="1.1"> <sec guid="BFBACB3C-4C17-4786-ACCF-96BFDBF32DA5" company_name="Company" version="1.1"> <data /> </sec> </eur> Then, I had to give the service a targetNamespace. Actually I don’t know if I “had” to set it, but I added (to the same VS project) some code to act as a client to a completely unrelated service (which also had no namespace), and the project would not build until I gave my service a namespace. Now the XSD starts like this: <xs:schema id="Ecommerce" elementFormDefault="qualified" xmlns:mstns="http://tempuri.org/Ecommerce.xsd" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" targetNamespace="http://www.company.com/ecommerce" xmlns:ecom="http://www. company.com/ecommerce"> <xs:element name="eur"> <xs:complexType> <xs:sequence> <xs:element ref="ecom:sec" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1" /> </xs:sequence> etc As you can see above I also updated all the xs:element ref attributes to give them the “ecom” prefix. Now the project builds again. I found the client needed some modification after this. The client uses a SQL stored procedure to generate the XML. This is then de-serialised into an object of the correct type for the service’s “get_data” method. The object’s type used to be “eur” but after updating the web reference to the service, it became “get_dataEur”. And sure enough the parent element in the XML had to be changed to “get_dataEur” to be accepted. Then bizarrely I also had to put the xmlns attribute containing my namespace on the “sec” element (the immediate child of the parent element) rather than the parent element. Here’s a sample document now sent from client to service: <get_dataEur xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" class="ECommerce_WebService" type="product" method="GetLastDateSent" chunk_no="1" total_chunks="1" date_stamp="2010-03-10T18:23:20.653" version="1.1"> <sec xmlns="http://www.company.com/ecommerce" guid="BFBACB3C-4C17-4786-ACCF-96BFDBF32DA5" company_name="Company" version="1.1"> <data /> </sec> </get_dataEur> If in the service’s get_data method I then serialize the incoming object I see this (the parent element is “eur” and the xmlns attribute is on the parent element): <eur xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns="http://www.company.com/ecommerce" class="ECommerce_WebService" type="product" method="GetLastDateSent" chunk_no="1" total_chunks="1" date_stamp="2010-03-10T18:23:20.653" version="1.1"> <sec guid="BFBACB3C-4C17-4786-ACCF-96BFDBF32DA5" company_name="Company" version="1.1"> <data /> </sec> </eur> The service then prepares a reply to go back to the client. The XML looks like this (the important data being sent back is the date_stamp attribute in the last_sent element): <eur xmlns="http://www.company.com/ecommerce" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" class="ECommerce_WebService" type="product" method="GetLastDateSent" chunk_no="1" total_chunks="1" date_stamp="2010-03-10T18:22:57.530" version="1.1"> <sec version="1.1" xmlns=""> <data> <last_sent date_stamp="2010-02-25T15:15:10.193" /> </data> </sec> </eur> Now finally, here’s the problem!!! The client does not see any data – all it sees is the parent element with nothing inside it. If I serialize the reply object in the client code it looks like this: <get_dataResponseEur xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" class="ECommerce_WebService" type="product" method="GetLastDateSent" chunk_no="1" total_chunks="1" date_stamp="2010-03-10T18:22:57.53" version="1.1" /> So, my questions are: why isn’t my client seeing the contents of the reply document? how do I fix it? why do I have to put the xmlns attribute on a child element rather than the parent element in the outgoing document?   • Nginx user subdomains, should I proxy_pass?

    I am trying to setup user subdomains, serving content from specific folders: www.example.com/username served from username.example.com (just like github pages). I've looked at Nginx rewrites, but I don't want the browser to redirect--I want the domain to be username.example.com. Anyway, a comment on this question says that I cannot rewrite host, only proxy to it. I tried to setup a proxy_pass, but all of the documentation and examples show it being used to (obviously) proxy to a service on another host or port, but in my case I want to just proxy to another location on the same host and port. Is this the appropriate way to tackle this problem, and if so, what is the right Nginx config syntax?

It makes it under the System process (as I see it in TCPView). As every network apps should be configured to use proxy in our network, I'm trying to add devenv.exe to proxification rules to make its traffic goes thru LAN's proxy server. It doesn't help. So my question is how can I make that low-level-system traffic will go through local area network proxy server?

    I have a meteor application running on port 3000. I can successfully connect to the program with www.myurl.com:3000, but would rather connect to it via www.myurl.com/myappname. How do I configure Apache to send port 3000 to www.myurl.com/myapp?

    I have a rails application hosted on Heroku that I need to integrate with 3rd party payments provider. The payment provider requires that my application will have a static IP for incoming and outgoing HTTPS requests. I want to deploy a proxy on a Linode VPS so it can relay the information as a proxy. Relaying the request to the service provider seems easy, I just use their IP. Can I relay requests coming from the service provider to the heroku application? Can I realy the request using a URL (https://myapp.herokuapp.com) ? What is the recommended proxy server to use?

  • Replacing hyperlinks in Apache2 ProxyPass

    I am using Apache2 with mod proxy on Ubuntu 12.04 as a reverse proxy to some back-end server: <VirtualHost *:80> ProxyPass / http://somewhere.com/mysite ProxyPassReverse / http://somewhere.com/mysite ServerName www.mysite.nl ServerAlias mysite.nl *.mysite.nl </VirtualHost> However, unfortunately the back-end server has some internal links hardcoded; e.g. a link to somewhere else in the site has <a href="http://somewhere.com/mysite/something"> instead of just <a href="something.png">. Is there a way I can use Apache to replace strings in the body as served by the backend before passing it back to the client? E.g replace all instances of "http://somewhere.com/site/" with "http://mysite.nl/" ? I know nginx or so is better as a reverse proxy, but the server is hosting other stuff so port 80 needs to be Apache2.
