    I need to calculate a whole bunch of averages on an List of Surveys. The surveys have lots of properties that are int and double valued. I am creating a business object to handle all the calculations (there are like 100) and I'd rather not code 100 different methods for finding the average for a particular property. I'd like to be able to have the UI pass a string (representing the property) and have the the business object return an average for that property. So, like... int AverageHeightInInches = MyObject.GetIntAverage("HeightInInches"); . . . Then have linq code to calculate the result. Thanks!

  • CSS and JQuery: spaces inside image name break code of url()

    Hi, I have a page that is supposed to display a larger version of an image when hovered over a thumbnail. I have a 'div' with an ID and the JQuery code is as following: $(document).ready(function(){ $('img').hover(function() { var src = $("#im" + this.id).attr("src"); $('#viewlarge').css('backgroundImage','url(' + src +')'); return false; }); }); The images I use, are generated by a Ruby script that "generate" an image with a similar, yet different id. However, sometimes, photo's are uploaded that have "spaces" inside. My developer tools tell me that the background-image is not set correctly, yet the image path is correct and the browser don't have problems finding the image. My question is, can I somehow sanitize the url 'src', so spaces won't be a problem? I am aware of doing this server side, yet I would like to know how to do this with JQuery/JS too. Thanks!

  • Wrong perspective is showing in Eclipse plugin project [closed]

    I am working in Eclipse Modeling Framework (Eclipse plugin development) in my project the tool(project i am working) provides three perspectives. 1.Accelerator Analyst perspective 2.Contract Validation and 3.Underwriter rules Editor... By default it starts with Contract validation perspective (As we define it within the plugin_customization.ini). However after switching to other perspective does not change the perspective shown... As all perspective (Class, Id and Name) is define only inside Plugin.XML as it is the task of org.eclipse.ui.perspective that that perspective name should be come forefront. Out of 10 7 times it is working fine but I am not getting why this is not working in that 3 cases.   • What is a widely accepted term for a string variable that would probably contain a file path and file name?

    For functions that need to index files in a directory and rename them FileName0001, FileName0002, etc... I often need to write a function that splits the file name from the file path and rename the file. When I put the file name and file path back together, I don't have a very good name for the variable that contains both of them and I usually just wind up concatenating them every time I want to use them (usually using them as parameters for functions labeled either filename or filepath) so I never really know what I'm doing until I notice a lot of files being written in the same directory as my binaries. Anyway, what do I call a file name and a file path? I don't want to call it File, because that usually means the binary information behind the file. I don't want to call it URI because that usually means I've got some sort of protocol, which I don't. I just want a good way to denote "c:\somedir\somedir\somedir\somefile.txt" so as to deconfuse this mess I've just realized I'm in. Please don't just list your personal preference. I think an excellent answer should "'site its sources". (as in, provide a link to a repository with a good example of the code being used as I described)

  • BizTalk and SQL: Alternatives to the SQL receive adapter. Using Msmq to receive SQL data

    If we have to get data from the SQL database, the standard way is to use a receive port with SQL adapter. SQL receive adapter is a solicit-response adapter. It periodically polls the SQL database with queries. That’s only way it can work. Sometimes it is undesirable. With new WCF-SQL adapter we can use the lightweight approach but still with the same principle, the WCF-SQL adapter periodically solicits the database with queries to check for the new records. Imagine the situation when the new records can appear in very broad time limits, some - in a second interval, others - in the several minutes interval. Our requirement is to process the new records ASAP. That means the polling interval should be near the shortest interval between the new records, a second interval. As a result the most of the poll queries would return nothing and would load the database without good reason. If the database is working under heavy payload, it is very undesirable. Do we have other choices? Sure. We can change the polling to the “eventing”. The good news is the SQL server could issue the event in case of new records with triggers. Got a new record –the trigger event is fired. No new records – no the trigger events – no excessive load to the database. The bad news is the SQL Server doesn’t have intrinsic methods to send the event data outside. For example, we would rather use the adapters that do listen for the data and do not solicit. There are several such adapters-listeners as File, Ftp, SOAP, WCF, and Msmq. But the SQL Server doesn’t have methods to create and save files, to consume the Web-services, to create and send messages in the queue, does it? Can we use the File, FTP, Msmq, WCF adapters to get data from SQL code? Yes, we can. The SQL Server 2005 and 2008 have the possibility to use .NET code inside SQL code. See the SQL Integration. How it works for the Msmq, for example: ·         New record is created, trigger is fired ·         Trigger calls the CLR stored procedure and passes the message parameters to it ·         The CLR stored procedure creates message and sends it to the outgoing queue in the SQL Server computer. ·         Msmq service transfers message to the queue in the BizTalk Server computer. ·         WCF-NetMsmq adapter receives the message from this queue. For the File adapter the idea is the same, the CLR stored procedure creates and stores the file with message, and then the File adapter picks up this file. Using WCF-NetMsmq adapter to get data from SQL I am describing the full set of the deployment and development steps for the case with the WCF-NetMsmq adapter. Development: 1.       Create the .NET code: project, class and method to create and send the message to the MSMQ queue. 2.       Create the SQL code in triggers to call the .NET code. Installation and Deployment: 1.       SQL Server: a.       Register the CLR assembly with .NET (CLR) code b.      Install the MSMQ Services 2.       BizTalk Server: a.       Install the MSMQ Services b.      Create the MSMQ queue c.       Create the WCF-NetMsmq receive port.   • How much information can you mine out of a name?

    While not directly related to programming, I figured that the programmers on here would be just as curious as I was about this question. Feel free to close the question if it does not meet with the guidelines. A name: first, possibly a middle, and surname. I'm curious about how much information you can mine out of a name, using publicly available datasets. I know that you can get the following with anywhere between a low-high probability (depending on the input) using US census data: 1) Gender. 2) Race. Facebook for instance, used exactly that to find out, with a decent level of accuracy, the racial distribution of users of their site (https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=205925658858). What else can be mined? I'm not looking for anything specific, this is a very open-ended question to assuage my curiousity. My examples are US specific, so we'll assume that the name is the name of someone located in the US; but, if someone knows of publicly available datasets for other countries, I'm more than open to them too. I hope this is an interesting question!

    I am using VS2010, CrystalReport13 & MVC3. My problem is unable to add an external assembly in Crystal Report using "Database Expert" Option. I have a class named WeeklyReportModel in an external assembly. In my web project, data retrieving from DB as IEnumerable collection of WeeklyReportModel. I tried ProjectData - .NetObjects in Crystal Report for adding the WeeklyReportModel. But this external assembly is not showing under ".NetObjects". Then I tried other option as Create New Connection - ADO.Net – Make New Connection and pointed this External Assembly. It has been added under Ado.Net node, but while expanding displays as "...no items found..." Totally frustrated. Please help.   • Annotation Processor for Superclass Sensitive Actions

    Someone creating superclass sensitive actions should need to specify only the following things: The condition under which the popup menu item should be available, i.e., the condition under which the action is relevant. And, for superclass sensitive actions, the condition is the name of a superclass. I.e., if I'm creating an action that should only be invokable if the class implements "org.openide.windows.TopComponent",  then that fully qualified name is the condition. The position in the list of Java class popup menus where the new menu item should be found, relative to the existing menu items. The display name. The path to the action folder where the new action is registered in the Central Registry. The code that should be executed when the action is invoked. In other words, the code for the enablement (which, in this case, means the visibility of the popup menu item when you right-click on the Java class) should be handled generically, under the hood, and not every time all over again in each action that needs this special kind of enablement.   • IIS 7 Authentication: Certain users can't authenticate, while almost all others can.

    I'm using IIS 7 Digest authentication to control access to a certain directory containing files. Users access the files through a department website from inside our network and outside. I've set NTFS permissions on the directory to allow a certain AD group to view the files. When I click a link to one of those files on the website I get prompted for a username and password. With most users everything works fine, but with a few of them it prompts for a password 3 times and then get: 401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials. But other users that are in the group can get in without a problem. If I switch it over to Windows Authentication, then the trouble users can log in fine. That directory is also shared, and users that can't log in through the website are able to browse to the share and view files in it, so I know that the permissions are ok.   • Ways to ensure unique instances of a class?

    I'm looking for different ways to ensure that each instance of a given class is a uniquely identifiable instance. For example, I have a Name class with the field name. Once I have a Name object with name initialised to John Smith I don't want to be able to instantiate a different Name object also with the name as John Smith, or if instantiation does take place I want a reference to the orginal object to be passed back rather than a new object. I'm aware that one way of doing this is to have a static factory that holds a Map of all the current Name objects and the factory checks that an object with John Smith as the name doesn't already exist before passing back a reference to a Name object. Another way I could think of off the top of my head is having a static Map in the Name class and when the constructor is called throwing an exception if the value passed in for name is already in use in another object, however I'm aware throwing exceptions in a constructor is generally a bad idea. Are there other ways of achieving this?

    In a previous post I showed how to create expression trees to set properties on an object. The way I did it was not very developer friendly. It involved explicitly creating the necessary expressions because the compiler won’t generate expression trees with property or field set expressions. Recently someone contacted me the help develop some kind of command pattern framework that used developer friendly lambdas to generate property set expression trees. Simply putting, given this entity class: public class Person { public string Name { get; set; } } The person in question wanted to write code like this: var et = Set((Person p) => p.Name = "me"); Where et is the expression tree that represents the property assignment. So, if we can’t do this, let’s try the next best thing that is splitting retrieving the property information from the retrieving the value to assign o the property: var et = Set((Person p) => p.Name, () => "me"); And this is something that the compiler can handle.   • Is it a bad practice to register sntsh.com if my name is Santosh?

    My name is Santosh but I can't register a santosh.com because it is already taken. Most extensions for Santosh are already taken. I was trying to register a domain with .sh extension but santo.sh would cost me very high and I can't afford ~$100 for just a personal domain and that's only for one year only. Now I am thinking that I should register a sntsh.com. But there is a problem, will sntsh.com over my name Santosh don't create a SEO problem? One more thing, that totally different from above topic. If I register a santosh.name domain which is not registered, won't it create copyright and any legal problems with other santosh domains?
