  • Sorting an array in descending order in Ruby.

    Hi, I have an array of hashes like following [ { :foo => 'foo', :bar => 2 }, { :foo => 'foo', :bar => 3 }, { :foo => 'foo', :bar => 5 }, ] I am trying to sort above array in descending order according to the value of :bar in each hash. I am using sort_by like following to sort above array. a.sort_by { |h| h[:bar] } However above sorts the array in ascending order. How do I make it sort in descending order? One solution was to do following: a.sort_by { |h| -h[:bar] } But that negative sign does not seem appropriate. Any views?

I know that the portablecontacts gem will retrieve contacts, but does not allow for adding or updating. I was wondering if anyone knew of a gem that will handle this type of interaction. If not what would be the best method to implement a gem that would make it easier to handle the responses.

  • caching static files for ruby on rails application using nginx

    I have been trying for some time to serve & cache static files for my rails app using nginx. the rails app server runs mongrel_cluster and is deployed on a different host than that of nginx. following many of the available discussions I tried the following server { listen 80; server_name www.myappserver.com; ssl on; root /var/apps/myapp/current/public; location ~ ^/(images|javascripts|stylesheets)/ { root /var/apps/myapp/current; expires 10y; } location / { proxy_pass http://myapp_upstream; } } But nginx fails to find the images and to load the css and js files. Can anyone help me out here? My aim is to configure nginx in such a way that it caches the static files till expiry. Please suggest me some way to achieve this or am I missing any point here?

    I need to parse a command line like script.rb <mandatory filename> [options] with optparse. Sure I can write some custom code to handle the filename, then pass ARGV to optparse, but maybe there's a simpler way to do it? EDIT: there's another hacky way to parse such a command line, and that is pass '--mandatory-filename ' + ARGV to optparse, then handle the --mandatory-filename option.

  • Serialized form fields in Ruby on Rails problem

    I'm having a problem making serialized columns in my model persist correctly in forms. If my model validation fails I want to redisplay the "new" page with all my model data still in the forms. Right now, everything except the serialized fields seem to persist (if my Order fails to purchase, on the "new" page the email is still filled in but the shipping address fields are not). Is this a Rails bug or am I doing something wrong?     I find myself using hash arguments to constructors quite a bit, especially when writing DSLs for configuration or other bits of API that the end user will be exposed to. What I end up doing is something like the following: class Example PROPERTIES = [:name, :age] PROPERTIES.each { |p| attr_reader p } def initialize(args) PROPERTIES.each do |p| self.instance_variable_set "@#{p}", args[p] if not args[p].nil? end end end Is there no more idiomatic way to achieve this? The throw-away constant and the symbol to string conversion seem particularly egregious.

    I am in my first steps of implementing OpenID in my Rails app. open_id_authentication appeared to be a fairly easy-to-use plugin, which is why I decided to use it. Logging in with my Google account seems to work perfectly, however I do not get the sreg/AX fields that I require. How do I effectively require the email from most OpenID providers with open_id_authentication?

  • Ruby -- looking for some sort of "Regexp unescape" method

    I have a bunch of strings that appear to have been double-escaped -- eg, I have "\\014\"\\000\"\\016smoothing\"\\011mean\"\\022color\"\\011zero@\\016" but I want "\014"\000"\016smoothing"\011mean"\022color"\011zero@\016" Is there a method I can use to unescape them? I imagine that I could make a regex to remove 1 backslash from every consecutive n backslashes, but I don't have a lot of regex experience and it seems there ought to be a "more elegant" way to do it. For example, when I puts MyString it displays the output I'd like, but I don't know how I might capture that into a variable. Thanks! Edited to add context: I have this class that is being used to marshal / restore some stuff, but when I restore some old strings it spits out a type error which I've determined is because they weren't -- for some inexplicable reason -- stored as base64.     So, I'd like to be able to make a call x = MyClass.new('good morning', 'good afternoon', 'good evening', 'good night', ['hello', 'goodbye']) that would add methods to the class whose values are the values of the arguments. So now: p x.methods #> [m_greeting, a_greeting, e_greeting, n_greeting, r_greeting, ...] And p x.m_greeting #> "good morning" p x.r_greeting #> ['hello', 'goodbye'] I realize that this is sort of what instance variables are to do (and that if I wanted them immutable I could make them frozen constants) but, for reasons beyond my control, I need to make methods instead.   • Ruby on Rails: attr_accessor for submodels

    I'm working with some models where a lot of a given model's key attributes are actually stored in a submodel. Example: class WikiArticle has_many :revisions has_one :current_revision, :class_name => "Revision", :order => "created_at DESC" end class Revision has_one :wiki_article end The Revision class has a ton of database fields, and the WikiArticle has very few. However, I often have to access a Revision's fields from the context of a WikiArticle. The most important case of this is probably on creating an article. I've been doing that with lots of methods that look like this, one for each field: def description if @description @description elsif current_revision current_revision.description else "" end end def description=(string) @description = string end And then on my save, I save @description into a new revision. This whole thing reminds me a lot of attr_accessor, only it doesn't seem like I can get attr_accessor to do what I need. How can I define an attr_submodel_accessor such that I could just give field names and have it automatically create all those methods the way attr_accessor does?
