• Reasons for Wi-Fi to be slower on Ubuntu compared to Windows?

  I'm using 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 64 bit – dual boot on the same computer. Connecting to the same wireless network. And it turns out that on Windows I get a more stable and stronger signal than on Ubuntu. To my knowledge there's a router which serves as a gateway and then there's a cable connected to the router which goes further to ISP, so the results for both OS should be the same. I've tested the issue on both OSs at various times and it gave me the same result. The question is why? Why Ubuntu networking is worse than that of Windows?

• Dns works, can ping, but cannot load web pages in browser

  Yesterday I changed routers, and my desktop computer started acting up. I could ping websites, and nslookup was able to resolve names to addresses, but neither chrome, firefox, nor ie could load any webpages. None of my other computers connected to the same wireless router have any problems. I connect my desktop to the router through a cheap wifi dongle. I am not super familiar with networking, but it seems that it is not a problem with the router, as dns works, and so does dhcp (the desktop is assigned an address correctly). • Numpad's Enter key is acting like the Command key instead

  I can't get the numpad Enter key to work on OS X 10.6.5. The numpad works fine, as do the plus and minus keys. Only the Enter is not working. I tried 2 keyboards and I get the same problem with both, so it's got to be a setting somewhere. In Keyboard Viewer, when I press the key, it shows that the ? keys are pressed. And indeed, pressing Enter-L puts the cursor in the location bar of my browser, just like Command-L would. Is there a way to remap it?

  Something is wrong with my keyboard?: when I type ", nothing comes out, and if I type it again, 2 of them come out as such: "". Same goes with the ' key. The first time I type it, nothing comes out, then if I hit it again two of them appear (so I have to backspace one of them everytime). I've got no idea what I did to my computer, it was working properly yesterday. (I think I was messing around with the language thing, however I've just undid everything I've did and its still not working.)

• How to put fear of God (law) into Wi-Fi hacking neighbors [closed]

  I live in an apartment and some new guys have apparently moved into one of the apartments. They have been shamelessly hacking into my WiFi. Mine was initially a WEP encrypted network and out of laziness I just limited and reserved the IPS on my router for the people in my house. Yesterday I had to free up an IP for a guest in my house but before he could join the network these guys connected in. I have changed my encryption to WPA2 and hope they dont have the hardware/patience required to hack into it, but there are many wi-fi networks in my apartment most of which are secured using WEP. I don't really want to call the police on them. Is there any way to deter them from misusing other people's wi-fi ? I have gone through I think someone else has access to my wireless network. What next? but I have already taken the steps mentioned there.

• Can't connect printer wirelessly to linksys wrt54g using WPS

  I've already blown over 1/2 day on this. I keep checking and rechecking my router settings and they agree with what the documentation says for my brand new HP4620 printer. Supposedly I just tell the router to listen for connections and tell the printer to connect. It fails every time! Further, I have also read some opinions that when things are not configured correctly the linksys will disable WPS and it looks like that's happening as well. Further, it's causing other wireless devices in my house to lose there connectivity until I re-enable WPA networking on the router. Has anyone been here before? This is driving me crazy... -mark

• Automatically Connecting to Hidden SSID WiFi Network

  My MacBook Pro will not automatically connect to a Wireless network with a hidden SSID. It makes me select the "Join Other Network..." in the Airport menu (in the system tray), where I need to input the name of the network, then security type, password and wait for it to connect. This is becoming increasingly annoying to have to do every time I come back to my desk. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5 and there doesn't seem to be an option to connect to a specific network, but rather "Preferred Networks." The only network I have set as Preferred that's in range is my home network, and it still doesn't automatically connect. Making the network publicly visible isn't under my control, so I'm stuck with what's currently in place. • Can't connect to the internet in Windows Vista

  I have a Windows Vista computer which i have used for about 2 years without any issues. Recently, i started having problems connecting to the internet with this Vista computer. My other XP Computers are fine and can connect to the Internet. Regardless of wired or wireless connection, i am unable to get the Vista computer connected to the web. The Status remains "Limited" for IPv4 and IPv6. It also shows unidentified Public Network, and is able to connect to the router. However, there's a disconnection between the router and the internet. Any help will be greatly appreciated, i have been on this for 4 weeks now.

• What would cause a single working website to not work on 1 out of 5 devices on a network?

  There is a specific website that loads up without problem on all machines on my network (both wired and wireless) except one laptop. This laptop is a Windows 7 machine that was just recovered using the recovery partition, so it is fresh. The site will not load in Firefox 3.6 or IE 8. The website is http://www.weightwacthers.com The site loads fine on my desktop, iPhone, and Droid, but not the laptop. In all my years in this business I've honestly never seen this happen. Also, 'Is it down for me or everyone' reports that it is indeed only me. What would cause this to happen?

After looking for a solution in google, I found that I needed to install the following package: firmware-ralink_0.28+squeeze1_all.deb I've installed it, but Debian doesn't want to find the adapter. • Dealing with employees that use Hotspots? [closed]

  Recently a consultant revealed to me and my superiors that a particular department in my company had a tremendous decline in productivity over the past year. This department happened to mostly work with laptops and tablets and thus had wireless. Our barracuda did not display any vast amounts of internet entertainment and so I was initially puzzled by his statement. However he explained that more and more employees are using "hotspots" that when not broadcasted, become invisible to our network. So basically these people could connect to hotspots and watch youtube all day and we would never know it. The consultant also said that this was becoming an issue for many companies. So my question is, how can I detect invisible hotspots? I was browsing google and there are several different programs that can scan for such access points. But I am hoping to get a recommendation from the serverfault community. Thank you.

• Netgear WNDR3700 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi are segregated

  I have a Netgear WNDR3700 with both the 2.4GHz (B/G/N) and 5GHz (A/N) broadcasting. I'd assumed that devices connecting on either channel would work together without issues, but there are some devices (such as my iPhone 4 or HP wireless printer) that will only connect at 2.4GHz, and some that connect at 5GHz. However, it seems that they're segregated on the network, so a computer at 5GHz can't print to the printer, but the iPhone can. This is causing issues not just with printing, but with AppleTV and so on. Is there a way to have the router let these devices all talk to each other?

• Can I use my Belkin router as a repeater?

  I've got a brand new, unopened Belkin N600 DB router (yay 50% off sale), and I can't seem to figure out if I can use it as a repeater. As far as I can tell, it doesn't support DD-WRT or Tomato, but I'm wondering if there may be some way to rig it up to repeat Wifi. Also, I really need to know before I open it, because, being a bit tight on money at the moment, I'll probably sell it if I can't use it as a repeater. Finally, two caveats: I can't use the other wireless router for anything other than broadcasting straight from the modem (parents are paranoid about anything technological). I can't run ethernet to the second router due to the layout of the house. Thanks so much for the help everyone--if I'm being vague, tell me! EDIT: Also, the manual here is pretty useless on this topic as far as I can tell.

• How can I make my laptop use a phone as a wi-fi adapter?

  I have an HP Pavilion dv6400 series laptop with an NVidea chipset which is the subject of a class action lawsuit. The symptom (PDF) that I'm experiencing is that the system fails to recognize that there is a wireless adapter installed. It doesn't appear in Device Manager. In this question, I ask if there's a way to work around this problem. As an alternative, I'd like to see if there's a way to use an old Windows Mobile 5 phone that does not have cellular service (voice or data) as a Wi-Fi adapter. How can this be accomplished? The system is running Windows Vista Home and has the latest BIOS (F42) and Windows updates and drivers.

• College wifi works easily on Linux, but not on Windows

  In Linux: After connecting to the college wifi, going to the network login page logging in, the internet works perfectly as it should. In Windows: After connecting to the college wifi, going to the network login page, logging in, Windows shows "Internet access" and the wireless icon turns white. But still after that, regardless of the browser being used, attempting to accessing any page just shows "Sending request". It does work though after a lot of tries, but only in intervals. But when running Ubuntu 11.10 in VirtualBox, it works properly just like booting in Ubuntu, even if it isn't working on Windows. The college wifi service is really crappy and has been unable to solve this problem. I'm pretty sure there should be a solution for this, but what? What is it that Ubuntu is doing right and Windows isn't? Windows settings set to "Automatically detect settings" and no proxy server used.

• Resetting default Input Method in Mac OS 10.6

  I'm a Dvorak guy. I recently installed a new machine at the inlaws who are not Dvorak people. I stupidly selected Dvorak as my Input Method of choice while installing OS X. Now, all of the users I created default to Dvorak and need to go through the manual process of removing Dvorak as their Input Method of choice and instead choosing U.S. I have no idea how far reaching the implications might be. Could be that any time another user is added they will default to Dvorak. Right now, I'd like to set the default back to U.S. How can I do that? Behaviors I'm looking for include that when the Input Menu is not shown at the Login Screen, U.S. is the keyboard layout. Any future users created should default to U.S. with no Input Menu in the menu bar. Any users created already should have their default layout be U.S. Thanks in advance!

On the other room i have a laptop which is connected through the router wirelessly. Now the problem is, since i have other appliances that need to get connected but are not wifi cable i have another wifi router. • Simple way to get keys/mouse buttons working in Synergy (mac client, pc server)

  I'm trying to get Synergy working running as client on my Mac with SynergyKM Preferences panel. It's performing generally fine (just some real slow downs when my network is under heavy use, usually from youtube videos). The main thing I want to get working is none of the special buttons on my mouse are working on the client.. just the scroll and middle click.. but I have back/forward buttons I'd like to have working. Also my Windows Comfort Curve Keyboard has some extra keys and I'd like to know how to set those up to perform operations on my Mac client. I could have sworn that home/end weren't working but they seem to be now.. perhaps it's application specific..

Both are connected to the same wireless network, both have access to internet but I can't have access between them... I have used open path in the file explorer and nothing... Every solution I've found requires that a row be highlighted before inserting a new row. • Firefox addon to display all shortucts

  Is there a firefox addon that would display all shortcuts on a web page and also browser shortcuts. for eg: c is the keyboard shortcut for gmail compose. So either on a particular key combination or by hovering over the compose button it should show a "c" to indicate there is a shortcut for this operation. I guess If we keep on seeing the shortcuts popping each time when we do an action then we can start using and remembering more and more of it. Thanks. • Macbook not connecting to WIFI

  I have been having this problem all week. My Macbook aluminium can't see my wifi network. I have changed the channel to one that isn't being used by neighbours and my iphone picks it up straight away. In other words, the router is fine. It's just the macbook can't see it. This is driving me nuts if anyone can help... My airport card details... • I have to manually enter the pwd when I login at school and when I come back home with my laptop (DELL E6410)

  I didn't have to do this the first 3 months of me going to school. My laptop used to be able to connect to my Home WiFi and school Wifi automatically then after the 3rd month something changed and eversince then I literally have to manually enter each of the Wifi passwords in each location each time I try to connect to their respective WLAN. I tried adding each WiFi networks in the "Manage wireless networks" section in the Network and Sharing Center but everytime I login to one of the location, the created network disappears and I did this more than once. I tried restoring the OS back but to no avail. Can someone please assist me on this issue. I'm not sure if this issue has been addressed in this website but I haven't seen any similar question in here. I appreciate any help anyone may be able to share.

• Cisco WLAN Controller not pushing out DHCP addresses, what else could it be?

  On our Cisco WLAN Controller web interfaces, in Controller Interfaces, I have made a new interface with these settings: VLAN Identifier 202 IP Address 172.16.202.1 Netmask 255.255.255.0 Gateway 172.16.202.254 Primary DHCP Server 172.16.100.3 Secondary DHCP Server 172.16.100.2 Port: LAG I've also made a new WLAN and assigned it to the above interface. I have saved changes. But our wireless devices, although they seem to authenticate with the WLAN fine, they always get stuck on "obtaining DHCP address", so it seems the WLAN Controller isn't pushing out DHCP addresses to our devices. We do have a DHCP scope for the above in Windows Server 2008 R2 and everything there seems fine. If I connect a device with a static address (e.g. 172.16.202.10), it will connect. Stuck on what to do :(

• How get OSX Lion to save Modifier Key Settings (i.e. swap Ctrl and Cmd)

  I use Lion at work with an MS Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. Every single time I log in I have to go into settings and swap the command and control keys. This is really annoying. Is there a way to get these settings to stick? Beyond that, I'd also like to remap a few other keys and I'm interested in tools for doing that. I think I need to work out the first issue first though. Thanks for any help.
